- Fly Fish People!! I just had a blast playing with my small 7.5 ft 5wt White River Dogwood Canyon rod! YES!!! It was so much fun and thanks to the Airflo Skagit Scout it makes this thing a freakin dart!
My Setup is as follows:
Backing: 80ft backing Dacron 20lb
Running line: 80ft Berkley Trilene Big Game(Solar Green I think?!?) 40lb .024
Shooting Head: Airflo Skagit Scout 210 grain
Sinktip: Aiflo 5ft Polyleader Salmon/Steelhead
Leader: 12lb Maxima 4 feet
Fly: Wood Special size 10
You will learn to love it . Years ago I put a OPST single hand Skagit head with some baking and running line on an Ari Heart reel I used on my six weight and since then I take it wherever I go . The beauty is it works with any six weight i maybe using so if I’m nymphing and I want to swing streamers or soft hackles I just switch reels , simple . As you noticed you can cast it a long way , now you need to learn the basics of Spey casting to make this more effective. Thanks for sharing and go fish :-)
Yeah for sure. It’s awesome. Been a Skagit addict for a year now with my six weight. Just got into 2 handers and its just as fun! I agree if you’re new, learn the basics(surprisingly simple) and go out a bomb 60footers without a sweat! Keep er’ tight!
Great video! Nice to see that even older equipment can be used in new and different ways! Just found your channel about a week ago. Really enjoying your content and honest style. Please keep it up!
Still use the setup and love it! Appreciate the kind words.
Welcome to the addiction!
I've been doing the single-hand-skagit thing for a few years now. It's so much fun!
My comfort zone is the OPST 275 grain on a 9' ft 6 wt. I use the Rio MOW tips, and my default is the 5/5 "Light" (5 ft floating and 5 ft T-8). Then whatever leader length/diameter to match the fly. To me, this is the perfect setup. It gets the job done for I'd say 90% of the streamers I use for trout.
Really enjoy your channel. Hope you are famous (more than you are) I am new to fly fishing.
Glad you’re getting a kick out of em!Thank you Charles! 🙂
@greenhornflyhorn have you tried braided line over mono for backfill? I would think on a 5wt reel you can use 10# or 15# braid. 20# might be over kill. I would also think 4 thread would be way better over 8.
Price wise, braid would be way cheaper than traditional backing line.
Hmm never thought about it. My spool of backing was free so didn’t bother looking for another solution. I suppose you could use whatever you wanted for backing. To be honest, unless I am close to the mouth of the river, salmon/steelhead won’t take me into the backing. With that said, i really don’t see an advantage to using dacron backing other than it’s thicker than most braids. Hope this answers your question 🙂
You video has inspired me to get a fibreglass rod and put a Skagit head on it, I’m looking at a 5wt 8’ at the moment. Same weight scout head be the start you think?
Fiberglass rods have a pretty slow action. Skagit will work but it won’t be as good as a faster action rod. The rod I used in this video is pretty fast. I suggest asking the folks over at OPST or Airflo for recommendations on heads for your specific rod. Those folks know will get you on the right grain weight for sure.
Wicked bro, great way to give a older rod some love.
Yeah, it’s the rod that made me fall in love with fly fishing. So happy to be casting it again. Thank you for watching 🙂
Very interesting
Honestly it’s a lot of fun man, but it’s addictive! Keep er’ tight!
How did it work with the polyleader?
It worked very well. 5ft airflo poly was the ticket for this setup. I think an 8ft poly would’ve been more difficult to manage on a 7.5 foot rod.
@@greenhornflyhorn I ended up getting a 7'10 6wt graphite rod, im thinking a 240 grain skagit scout might be a starting point ?
@@craigwheaton2506 i think it would be worth contacting airflo or OPST just incase. They will probably want a bunch of info about your rod. That being said, I use a 240grain on my 9ft 6wt and it launches! Hope it works out for you, it’s fun!
I'll never get that time back
Thanks for the click man!
Put the reel on the rod butt section.
I made a jig after this video but your idea might have helped. Thanks for the tip😉
