Exactly what I needed to hear. I’ve been on a spree for awhile and I need to stop. I’m a sucker when it comes to being marketed to. I just bought the Antares Autotune Artists plug-in and Soundtoys Little Alter Boy today literally 30 minutes ago. Reason comes with pitch and formant correction already. I need to give my wallet a break and start just honing my skills as a producer. I’ve heard lots of people say this, but the way he just said it, I actually believe it. Thank You! ... UPDATE : Now I want Melodyne 5 because apparently it’s a “game changer”. What do I do? Something tells me the game is going to stay the same. 🤔 They’re so convincing

"I don't want to waste any of your time" Michael, I hang on every word! Heck I've even watched some of your videos more than once. You're awesome. I love your tutorials and all of your videos.
YEah, I also tend to watch the videos multiple times: When they come out, and whenever I stumble over it again during production and remember there was a video on it.
That's precisely one of the main reasons in just the first two months of me getting into producing, why I keep coming back to Michael's channel. Getting real advice from real people who really love and care about music and sharing their knowledge with others that share this love. In that regard I can also highly recommend, as does Michael, to subscribe to the "Produce Like A Pro" channel from Warren Huart.
That last point in the video hit home for where I am in my music level right now. I really enjoy the stock plugins in my DAW but always have the fear of my music not being good enough because I don't have a plugin that costs $100
Schaeel Deolal you’re going to be just fine! I wish we reminded ourselves more often that we are the ones we need to invest in, not just more plugins :)
Exactly. When I started out, I was always buying this compressor or that eq. Now, i have one compressor that i use for everything and one eq that I use for everything. Lol
my 2 cents on this: you don't need top-of-the-line, premium plugins or tools, to make good music. it's the notes, the composition, the arrangements, the production, and more importantly, the emotions you put in it and aim to convey and share that will add magic to your piece. and no plugins will ever do all this for you. exception made maybe for those chord/progression plugins that can come handy for those with ideas but lacking some advance musicianship knowledge.
Thank you very much for your videos. All of them are very professional and straight to the point!! I totally agree on being distracted too much in the research for the next plugin and your words are super helpful. Keep up with the great work 😀 cheers from Italy 🇮🇹
There is an incredible free synth I found the other day called Eclipsis. Visually it is one of the best synths I've ever seen and the presets that come with it are exceptional. Despite being quite confusing, I think that if you spend long enough on it you can easily make sounds that would be impossible to make in expensive synths.
What about surge, it's a free wavetable synth that became Open source, it's 64-bits and also on MacOS, so no problem 😎, there's good stuff if you know where to found
I own the addictive keys studio grand and the quality is amazing! I am a piano player and I've tested a few piano vst's but I always gravitate towards this one I love the sound, extremely realistic! 10/10
Great video and very sound advice. I wish I heard this enough when I got started. Would have saved me from the endless plugin sales campaigns. Not too worried about how much I've spent but I feel I have acquired a tone of plugins I may never really need.
I think all you really need is a good piano plugin, and good synth plugin, and a good plugin with good builtin presets, and maybe a kontact library of strings and stuff, and thats really it, ive seen people with 100s of plugins and they never use them, every hiphop producer literally just opens up omnisphere and keyscape to make melodies and nothing else.
I use Cubase and earlier this year upgraded to Pro version just for the sake of the stock plugins that are in this DAW. Unfortunately when it comes to instruments VST's the free and demos not always are good enough. If I may add to your message. The "production" plug ins (EQ's, compressors, reverbs, delays, etc...) are stellar in DAW's nowadays, and like you said, the 3rd party products are usually just salesmen talk. But when it comes to instruments, I found out that paid versions (especially the 100+ ones) are way better than the free ones or the ones included in your DAW. There is one very important point to be made here. It all depends on your needs. If you just record your own stuff and want to add some strings to your guitar then free or included in your DAW is probably more than enough, but if you want to write a classical piece then sorry, free wont do it. It will sound plastic.
In my three months journey of learning music production, This is the best Teacher, best channel and the simplest person. you explains the details in and on another level. Much love from KENYA. wish i can email you a piece of what your lessons are transforming my creativity to.
Yes please, come on over to the place where campfires get lit! Also I wasnt even aware that spitfire audio had a free plugin. Imma think about downloading that
Been using Adictive keys for years, pretty good sounding. You can hear it in most of my covers on my channel, you can check out my cover of Perfect (Ed Sheeran) for instance
Everything you said from 10:27 on is ON POINT, my friend. People have made killer music throughout the 90s with older plugins, computers which were just about starting to support digital audio (not just MIDI)... some great plugins from back in the day, include Reaktor (the original version was really, really powerful), and the Pro-52 by NI which is literally 20 years old now?.... They really do play to your insecurities, indeed (not just the free plugin developers but the paid ones, too). Less is more, I've found, through the years.
Yes. In addition to what you and the video host said, I don’t think that there is a plug-in that will fix a boring musical idea, an inappropriate chord voicing, or poorly planned musical arrangement. Maybe we could use a plug-in with a meter that assesses a piece from “awesome” to “sucks”. 😊 I love plug-ins as much as the next guy, but I get more bang for the buck from working out the musical details. Think of those old soulful roots records where an entire band gathered around one or two microphones.
There are very few like you who gives honest and apt advise on plugins, companies and their business attitudes... Its always a pleasure to watch your videos... Your honesty and dedication reflects in your speech and body language

Another plugin suggestion, for those who love LABS and/or want more orchestra sounds: spitfire audio bbc orchestra-it has tremolo strings, and a really rich violin sound as well, it’s free if you take a survey by BBC. Thanks for the suggestions Michael, I didn’t even realize Addictive Keys had a free version, this was really helpful!
Flume said the same thing in one of his interviews, master any one synth/plugin so that you can create any sound you like. Honestly having that kind of power is unbelievable and it really doesn't matter which plugin you use (stock, paid or free) just start with the basics first and slowly build up the skills you might need for whatever specific sound you are looking for.
my guy... props to you for the discussion in the end. I had these exact same thoughts the other day... "why do I keep looking for new plugins?" and "what am I even looking for?" most of what we're looking for is depth in our skills and abilities, so thank you for touching on that!

Something worth noting about Helm in FL Studio: if your system scaling isn't 100% (this only applies to some computers), the GUI will appear glitched and the plugin won't really be usable. AFAIK the only solution to this is to go to Options > General Settings > GUI Display, change the "Main GUI Scaling" to 100%, and restart FL Studio for the changes to take effect. Depending on your monitor this will take some getting used to but at any rate Helm should work normally.

Loved the point at the end. Being a novice, there is that temptation to just plunk down $100 on something fancy - but I know that's not going to actually make my music good, at least not by itself. I have bought a plugin or two, but I'll hold off on the major items until I'm involved in some commercial music production endeavors (which will probably never happen.

Michael motivated me to learn music production on my own and I can say 7 months down the line I'm sure this is what I want to do in life. Very encouraging your words about using what we have. That has been my life mostly... I don't have access to the best stuff... In recent times, I have gotten the opportunity to upgrade some.... but ultimately, I have to constantly remind myself that instruments/equipment/software are only a part of the equation.
Recently I dropped all cracked vst/(i) for good. I realized by using cracking, it has the performance problem and update problem as it can't access the internet, obviously. But the thing i realized most was I am using things I didn't paid for to generate an income (there's always the saying when I can afford it I will buy it, but I have seen people, at least where I live the ratio of our coin is about (BR)5:1(USA)), and the amount of freebies by native instruments and others that are really good companies. Were skipped throughout the years. So what I want to really say is, some people get too caught up in de cracking thing where you can have access to all softwares products out there, but in the other hand it leaves you without the desire to pursue a buy in these products, because you get the cracking routine going on and well you can have it all, Don't you? I always felt guilt for using it, everyone tries to overlook it but, oh you now it's not what's going on in your mind. Cracking isn't as rewarding for you, it's like giving candy to a child whenever she wants it in the end she will only vouch for candies and fuck the food that her parents cooked with care. if you are in the cracking stop it for the sake o humanity and for human Art form of representing life through our senses and to support our technological development.
My god this is bizarre, while watching this video I was thinking to myself does this guy ever get angry or pissed off...and then the out take at the end!! Spoiler alert: He smashes the guitar all over the place at the end, like the scouser dude singing Magic Man.
Thanks Michael, crystal clear as always! Great instruments and insight : ) One doubt: I find LABS Soft Piano a bit low and weak in volume... Is it just me and my settings, or anybody else thinks the same? As for Helm, it's cool, but after some days the interface got visually messy and glitchy... Dunno... I heard other people had the same problem... Will try to reinstall. Ciao
@@marcolietti6466 If you use 2 displays, set one to 100% and drag Helm to that one and reload plugin, it should still function. Error is something to do with dpi scaling set at +/- 100%. A work around, but not ideal.

Also I've been using Helm as an alternative to Serum. I think it's great, obviously doesn't have all the things that Serum have like some wave shapes or filter types but it's a good place to start learning about synthesizers. You can learn the basics here and then move to Serum.
I really like that you cover all bases with this selection: a synth for sound design, a synth with samples and a drum machine - that's basically all you need! In recent times, I have gotten the opportunity to upgrade some.... but ultimately, I have to constantly remind myself that instruments/equipment/software are only a part of the equation.
Very useful video 👍👏👏
You should do a video on some of the best stock fl studio plugins!
In the mix is super channel I like your teaching I like it Keep it up
This guy is so sweet I just love watching him!! 😍
How did you fix the GUI Problem?
My god this is bizarre, while watching this video I was thinking to myself does this guy ever get angry or pissed off...and then the out take at the end!!
Spoiler alert: He smashes the guitar all over the place at the end, like the scouser dude singing Magic Man.
I Was chasing the plugins but those last words were just magical and motivating. Thank you so much. :)

Thanks Michael, crystal clear as always! Great instruments and insight : )
One doubt: I find LABS Soft Piano a bit low and weak in volume... Is it just me and my settings, or anybody else thinks the same?
As for Helm, it's cool, but after some days the interface got visually messy and glitchy... Dunno... I heard other people had the same problem... Will try to reinstall. Ciao
I had to set my display to 100% scaling, to get Helm to work inside FLS, but it overrides all settings, so had to pass on this one
@@CelticStone no hope then... Too bad... I wonder why it glitches like this
@@marcolietti6466 If you use 2 displays, set one to 100% and drag Helm to that one and reload plugin, it should still function. Error is something to do with dpi scaling set at +/- 100%. A work around, but not ideal.
@@CelticStone thank you ALH! Yep, I use 2 displays, so I'll try this out! Cheers!
Enjoyed seeing your again, Michael. Thank you so much.
the song in that LABS demonstration you were playing at 3:40 was In Time by Talos right?!! I wonder if anyone caught that?
Thankyou.
Amazing message at the end! Thanks for the great content, Michael!
I’m definitely going to try labs! It sounds like it may have some worldwide instruments. The moon guitar sounds just like the sound I was looking for
Really inspiring outro, I have always fel insecure about my mixing and mastering
Hello sir please make a full video on arrangement of song
Damn Sirens.
Thank you for those plugins, and the little philosophy at the end, very appreciated, and so true !! ^^

Thanks to the author of the video
Those finishing words are a pure gold man
Can u make a detailed tutorial on Ozone Neoverb
LABS is absolutely awesome. Honestly anything Spitfire is good. Their BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover plugin is also free if you do a survey, which is really good; it's the best free orchestra sound I've come across
10:18 made this the most important video in 2020. Listen and understand.
Man! I love your videos. You are the reason I love FL studio and learning new things everyday. You are the best. God bless! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
On a side note, 13 min video uploaded 14 mins ago and 3 dislikes? Is there a cure for hatred in this world?
Right now you can download a free orchestra library from spitfire audio you just have to wait two weeks
Also I've been using Helm as an alternative to Serum. I think it's great, obviously doesn't have all the things that Serum have like some wave shapes or filter types but it's a good place to start learning about synthesizers. You can learn the basics here and then move to Serum.
Thank you Michael
3:28 sounds a little bit Astronomia inspired. I like your videos, thank's for your really great and helpful videos.
I really like that you cover all bases with this selection: a synth for sound design, a synth with samples and a drum machine - that's basically all you need! You put effort in keeping the list short and selecting the best! And the part at 10:18 is exactly how I feel)! For me trying new plug-ins or even DAWs is a form of procrastination)
