Legend has it when their label asked them how much they needed to shoot a music video for the song, they said $500, knowing they were going to film it for free at one of the band member's house. Supposedly they spent the whole $500 on drinks and weed and invited some friends over and shot the video 🤣🤣 capitalism baby
This was filmed in the drummers backyard. They smoked much weed before filming. The song was written by LEDBELLY. An iconic black blues man from the south. He happens to be Nirvanas favorite artist.❤
No live band, but. Back in the '70s as teens we lived in a subdivision but the house sat on about 1.5 acres. A hill & trees wrapped around 2 sides of the property. While my parents were out of town my brother, sister & I had a party. We put speakers on the house roof pointing down to the backyard to blast tunes like this. We told a few friends about it, that's all. That night by about 9 PM the place was swarming with teenagers. Both sides of the street was bumper to bumper parked cars. The pool parking lot across the street was full. I was talking to some people I'd never met & asked them how they found about it. Guy said a dude at the gas station up the street was giving directions. I didn't know anybody that worked at a gas station, much less the one up the street. About midnight the cops show up. Take me aside, wanted to know were my parents were. Uhhhh??? Gives me an hour to clear the place out or else. The next day we had to rake up the beer can tabs in the backyard. Also got a phone call from a lady looking for her daughter. I have no idea how she got our number or knew that something was on at our place that night. I swore we didn't have any daughters hanging around. Try that today & see how far you get. LOL
I love watching young people react to this song!! It hit the radio when my little brother was a young teen. I’m 70 and I still love this banger as you kids say ❤
Prayers for that beautiful little sprout! I'm sure God's got his hands all over you guys and the doctors so keep the faith! Glad you guys enjoyed this one, one of my favorite classics!
It's a song about a gun I always heard. From wikipedia: Black Betty" (Roud 11668) is a 20th-century African-American work song often credited to Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter as the author, though the earliest recordings are not by him. Some sources claim it is one of Lead Belly's many adaptations of earlier folk material. " was a common term for a bottle of whisky in the borderlands between northern England and southern Scotland; it later became a euphemism in the backcountry areas of the eastern United States. It is also said that 'Black Betty' was a nickname for a certain type of musket, i.e. an old-timey gun with black paint. And in that regard, the phrase “bam-ba-lam”, as recited in the lyrics, is said to be intended to imitate the sound of gunfire.
The 'Black Betty' was an early musket but this song is about a moonshine still which was well used and had turned black. The child they are referring to was a smaller still made from black betty's spare parts. 'damn thing gone blind' refers to a bad batch of shine that caused temporary blindness. (or summin like that).
Black Betty" was a cadence sung by black confederate soldiers during the civil war. Black Betty was a rifle made in Birmingham, Alabama. The company that made the gun made an "improved model", hence "Black Betty had a child". They hated the new rifle because it didn't shoot straight. Hence, "damned thing gone wild". Ram Jam put music to the 160 year old cadence.
Yes, its origin is a marching cadence song from the revolutionary war. Black Betty refers to a musket and NOT a black lady The song even refers to Betty as a "thing" The "child" is the black betty's replacement. "Bam-A_Lam" is the sound of the musket firing .
The original yeah but Ram Jam’s interpretation is most definitely about a fine thing from Alabama. I always love the guys that have to come in to the comments and “set the record straight” about what the song means…smh
May God Bless your baby child with the fullness of all grace and healing.Amen.Our 22 year old boy was born..2 months..premature...he is living a good life to the full.Prayers and love to you both...from Australia.
This is my first time sitting in with you today, thank you for allowing me to do that. I subscribed and gave you a big like! They are in the backyard! A good time was had by all as you can tell, pure energy! Congratulations on your baby, I will be sending positive thoughts your way and his way! Great reaction! Only bad thing about the song is it isn't long enough!
New sub, Congrats on the little one, Praying for the health and wellbeing of ur precious lil man. I know being chronically ill that it can be extremely stressful. Wish u only the best...This was a great backyard BBQ jam in the 70s...Black betty is a few things here; a flint-lock musket with a black painted stock and in that regard, the phrase “bam-ba-lam, a bottle of whiskey in particular dating as far back as 17th century London, African-American labor chant to add rhythm to the work, and lastly a beautiful black woman. He is smitten by her to the point where he can’t hold it in...Thanx so much, Take care, Blessings
Sending lots of prayers, my daughter is a little over 5 month pregnant with a baby girl that the doctors are saying will not survive. God Bless you and many prayers
Wondered why I hadn't seen your faces popup in my alerts - you had a babyyyyy...awww....and yes I will pray for that little boy to come back strong! God Speed and God Bless you!
The musket would have been a flint-lock musket with a black painted stock. The prison guards or soldiers were 'hugging Black Betty'. And when a updated model of the gun came out, known as 'Brown Bess', with an unpainted wooden stock, it was seen as the 'child' of the flint-lock musket
The early seventies has alot of fun music. I like yous guys reaction I'm 60 this is all my time being the youngest of 5. I grew up rock and loved motown and seen the change of music into disco. You play this music you guys are in for a trip. This generation has a lifetime of music that will open your minds move your souls. Have Funn your in a great time in life with that little one. Keep lite.
Backyard party with a band. Used to do this all the time in the 90's. I would bet people still do. I have turned anti-social so I never go anywhere anymore, lol.
Hello from Canada I hope your little baby boy is doing well soon I'm praying for him and I also remember this song when it came out I was about 13 in 1977 when I first heard this we used it at the dance at the first school dance that we did when we went from elementary school to high school and I did have a person I really liked in the school so I asked her to come to the dance with me
"Black Betty" is a 20th-century African-American work song often credited to Blues artist: Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter. The origin and meaning of the lyrics are subject to debate. Historically, the "Black Betty" of the title may refer to the nickname given to a number of objects: a bottle of whiskey, a whip, or a penitentiary transfer wagon. However, in more modern song references, the term "Black Betty" alludes to a fast car or motorcycle.
Black Betty was rumored to be many things, a whiskey from England, a rifle from hundreds of years ago up to a rifle used in the Civil War, the blind comes from the bad aim lol
First recorded by blues great LeadBelly. Though he was credited with writing it. It supposedly evolved from a song sung from Black "share croppers" working in the fields in the southern US in at least the early 1900's.
God bless you both. Father God please keep your hands over this family keep them strong. Heal that baby boy and let them feel your love and strength. In Jesus name we Play Amen. No matter what happens God has you He will take care of you. Everything happens for a reason. My own personal saying is, God's strongest warriors suffer the most.
The song is thought to be a work song that was first sung by prisoners on a chain gang it the Texas prison system. Lead belly did time in the Texas prison system. It's believed he heard it there but didn't write it. We may never know the truth.
It’s a name, a song, a tune that wasn’t so much created than has simply evolved over the years, decades, hell maybe even centuries. I would honestly like to see a true hip hop version of this song that is the next step from Ram Jam’s version
Back in the 1970's we'd have big outside house parties, guys who could play would set up just like that ! On the lawn, beer girls little smoke out all night till dawn, some summer parties would be all weekend long!

What ever on the weed lol You dont have to be high to make FANTASTIC 70s Music If thats true 80s bands were very high on coc lol
@@theodoreritola7641 I didn't just make that up dude its the story the band had told several times when asked, Google is your friend.
@@TheLwaller09 You are correct. Video filmed in the drummer's front yard. The few hundred dollars was spent on weed.
Lol, nice one!
@@theodoreritola7641 the band themselves have said this
Hope your son is great now god bless from Glasgow scotland
this was the 70's .. always had back yard parties with live bands ... love the 70's
A two minute twenty-five second jam that once you hear it, you will never forget it.
Look up the album version at nearly 4 minutes that includes an insane guitar solo.
This was filmed in the drummers backyard. They smoked much weed before filming. The song was written by LEDBELLY. An iconic black blues man from the south. He happens to be Nirvanas favorite artist.❤
This is how we partied in the 70's, great music, keg of beer and a bonfire by the lake.

Huddie heard this as a Chain Gang member and did his own version
How many songs written about guns and how many written about GIRLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mildly interesting, but I doubt that "Lead Belly" did the song anything like this 70s garage band.
The 'Black Betty' was an early musket but this song is about a moonshine still which was well used and had turned black. Your new baby is beautiful - you're all in my prayers.
He knew that guitar better than what the good lord gave him.. Or dare I say than any lady that came his way 😬😁
Guitarist/singer Bill Bartlett was formerly with the Lemon Pipers, a psychedelic/pop band in the late '60s who had a hit with Green Tambourine.

They play it a lot at sporting events to pump up the crowd.
And it ALWAYS gets em riled up, without fail. 😁🔥
What Ram Jam really needed was a good manager. They could have done so much more.
