We received a call from a pizza place across the street from the hospital and they said a patient was there ordering a pizza in a gown with an IV pole and it was beeping.
I say, just put them in the oven for about 5 minutes. The beeping will stop & there will be 1 less stupid, entitled (I can do anything I want!), person messing up others! I'm really joking people...but finding it hard to "suffer fools lightly". Thanks so much, Steve!

My equivalent working in a restaurant is standing in the walk in fridge for 15 minutes and just staring at the half thawed chicken for some semblance of peace after a rush has finally ended. Gives me the same vibes.
We had an ER patient sneak out and then get hit by a car on the corner. Same EMS crew brought him in both times

I laughed and then felt like a horrible person.
A patient left one of the medical floors and got hit by a car. Brought to ER by EHS and it was found that he’s already admitted. Was going to find him a spot first to get checked out but while he’s waiting for a room clean, he was cursing and spitting at the EHS crew so we had them put him on a wheelchair and porter took him back to his floor.
I just had a bit of my naivety stripped away. I only ever thought not letting patients leave with an IV was because of the risk of infection. Never even crossed my mind about how easy it would be for an addict to use one.

Right?! I was thinking to myself "Wow, I didn't realize removing your own IV could be so dangerous" until I saw the part about drug addiction. Didn't realize they would call the police if you left with an IV in either.
@@bananabicycleseat6796 Same reason they'd call the police if you had dementia and ran away. It's not that they're so salty about losing an IV that'd have been tossed into a biohazard bin anyway. But there's a huge safety risk and some serious liability there.

As if when they're so short staffed patients can run away they're going to care at all about the sexuality of their coworkers. I love these characters. I also vote for more from the EMT

Unless those coworkers have snuck off on shift to express their sexuality without clothes, I can't see how it's relevant.
When I went to the ER with pain that ended up in an emerging gallbladder removal, I didn't care if my male nurse was attracted to my female self. I cared that he made the pain stop.
I remember having a patient walk out not only with an IV but with the catheter and the Foley bag they found him three blocks away at the health food store and yes I ate his tray when he was gone

@@jemmmorrison8608 No, those 2 things are for pee collection. If you go to the hospital and are deemed unable to go to the bathroom on your own, they insert a catheter and foley bag for collection.
@@jemmmorrison8608 nope a catheter goes in to your bladder and they brought up a balloon that keeps it in place so that means you could not take it out and if you did try to take it out you would be in a world of hurt but a lot of junkies like IVs because I can use as a porta shoot their heroin in their crystal meth and all the other crap because most druggies have no veins left to shoot your drugs up Soleil coming to the ER the hospital and get an IV and then their girlfriends or boyfriends take them outside to smoke and next thing you know they come back looking like the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland with those big eyes that big smile I've seen all of it

I was a nurse for over 40 years. This Nurse/actor is the most right-on rep of how nurses work, get abused, handle other health workers/doctors than any others.

Ok so as a vet, our patients don't run into the danger of escaping with their IV (as they're secured in some way, a kennel, a stable, etc.). However, they do tend to pull it out. So at my workplace we invented this method of using a retractable dog leash which we connect to the horses' IV so they can at the same time lie down without pulling IVs out but also don't trip on it while they're standing 😁 different world, different problems and yet, listening to these videos, somehow people and animals seem quite similar. Thankfully, animals can't talk though. I'd take an angry cat over a homophobic guy or a summer teeth lady (bless her, I just couldn't work with humans) aany day 🥳🥳💗

And the beauty of working with cats is they often have a shut off switch when you hold them like their momma does. I don't know if that technique is accepted at your job, but it works wonders when trying to work with a pet at home.

Just as a tip- you don't want the leash to fully retract (depending on the size of the horse) as this could pull the IV out too, so we pull it out to the appropriate length, so the horse can walk around, lie down and still not stumble over it or pull it out (takes a little practice and fiddling to figure it out but it's not too bad!) and then, so the leash can no retract back in but still be pulled further out if necessary, we stick a little bit of 3M tape around the bit where it we want it to stop. Does that make sense? 😅 and also we hang the whole IV drip+ leash from the ceiling so that they don't step on it. Hope it helps and good luck to your husband, I'm actually in my last year of being a student too 😄
@@rebekah4761 well, yes, sometimes that works (we're not always allowed to do it , depending on the work place, although of course we always try to be gentle) but there are cats who could not care LESS about the magic switch and still go mad 😂 I have witnessed 5 people holding onto a cat (equipped with a leather glove and blankets) just to do a sonography. They can be wild 😂 but still better than humans IMO 😅

No, everybody loves Steve's stuff! You don't have to be medical to get a kick out of his spot on, real life, humor.
I'm not medical staff either, but have quite a bit of experience on the receiving end of it.
I was picking my Dad up after he had simple surgery. Nurse took out his IV to allow him to get dressed quickly while she gets a bandaid and his discharge papers to be signed. He was putting on his jacket because he was cold and I said 'wait. You can't put that on yet.' Another nurse came by and handed me the paperwork to sign said it was fine. I then told her he still had the IV port/needle catheter in his arm still. She went pale. We explained that he doesn't even take OTC pain meds, much less illegal stuff, so he's not the type to do that. She believed us but told us it could have been a huge issue if it was missed. After almost an hour of getting paperwork signed, the follow up, getting my car pulled up front and him wheeled to my car, the original nurse came running out, frantically telling the other nurse to not let him leave. I thought something was horribly wrong until she mentioned it. Dad showed her his arm to prove it was taken care of and she gave a huge sigh of relief. The nurse said she forgot to tell the other nurse to do so when she gave her the paperwork to give to me and just remembered.
It's interesting you guys have such huge problems with drugs that this becomes such an issue.
Back when I was 18, I was hospitalised for some skin infection during Chinese New Year. I got an IV on my hand and got permission from my doctor to leave the hospital to do some festive visitations. All with my IV on.

@@souldancersbyjennifer Non-drug users wouldn't even equate having an IV or port set useful for us except not having to get new pokes and find good veins.
yeah half the time you have to remind them to take it out. Its just so he doesnt try take it out and bleed out and make sure it clots before leaving.
@souldancersbyjennifer Same here. PPL usually get IV that can stay in your vein 2-3 days, go home with it, then return to hospital every day to receive another dose of their medication

I used to live in a particularly seedy part of SF (this was in about ‘93. Things weren’t as bad as they are now.)
You’d see people with IV’s, sometimes still wearing their ID bracelet, and hospital socks, copping heroin/coke (speedball). Not unusual, unfortunately.
What was really disturbing, tho, were the people that had PIC lines. That sh*t lets out at the heart, and putting filthy substances in it increases the risk of developing endocarditis. (Pic lines are anchored by a piece that’s sewn into the skin) Sometimes, they’d even return to the hospital by bus, after scoring. I knew a chick that had an abscess in her neck, from using veins there. (I paid to get her well, put her in a cab,and paid for it to get her to the hospital.) Seeing her a day later, wearing a hospital gown and buying dope, was both alarming and disappointing.
I was using, but just chipping. I still had my jobs and a flat. Seeing things like this certainly helped me pull out of it.
Addiction is a scary thing. And everyone thinks that they’ll be the exception to the rule, keeping it under control. No. No, you can’t. You have to get help. I did.
I saw so many people lose not just everything, but also their health, and sometimes their life.
If anyone is considering dabbling, I’ve got two things to say; one, you don’t want to learn hard lessons this way, and two, like good ole’ mother Regan said, just say no. Of course there’s more to it than that, but the spirit is right.

@@mecahunter7092 letting someone help you, can be the hardest of the first steps. Takes humility and being honest with yourself and others. It can be painful, which is odd. I’m grateful for some truly good people that were there for me.
It’s my hope that anyone that needs help, is able to access it. If others understood how hard it is to even ask, I believe there’d be less judgement. More success. And more love to go on and help others.

The whole D.A.R.E program was a joke. No kid ever listened to it. Now more than ever young kids are pressured to do drugs because it makes them a dweeb and will be excluded from all the “fun” stuff the cool kids do. No fuzzy program is going to stop it.
@@JasonB808 that’s something that never seems to change. And that’s no surprise; it’s human nature. The more you’re told “no”, the more curious you become. When the people telling you that it’s a no-no, that it’s “not cool”, are the absolute opposite of what you happen to respect or even like, there’s pretty much no chance that you’ll listen.
And to be honest, it was fun! At first. If it wasn’t, no one would become addicted. Duh.
Thing is, it becomes un-fun pretty quickly. I don’t know how many young women/girls I knew, that swore that they’d “never do That”, to get drugs (selling belongings, eventually selling more personal things), ended up doing just that. Even if it was on the serious down-low, and wasn’t being called what it was.
When everything else is gone, you’ve either been cut off by family and friends, or cut them off out of embarrassment, and you’re sick and desperate, you will sell your damn soul, if need be.
I’ve seen it over and over. It’s not real hard to make that jump, especially if it means getting high to forget about it afterwards. And that just makes it worse, because you need more and more dope to except the shame and embarrassment, and the pain and abuse. You need more just to exist; it ain’t fun anymore.
I knew a girl whose mother would take her, when she was 9, to the farm worker’s camps to turn tricks. She was strung out, and started fixing her daughter just so they could make that scratch. I knew her when she was in program with me. She had 4 young, beautiful children. She was doing really well. She relapsed, list her kids, and just fell apart. I remember the last day I saw her; I was in a Latina transitional house. I wanted her to come out to give it a try. We went back and forth for a while. I ended up giving her money for bus fare and food, but never saw her show up there. About three weeks later, I heard that she’d jumped out of a car on the freeway. The most painful thing is getting clean, then relapsing. The pride just can’t take that kind of hit, sometimes. And starting over just seems impossible. Particularly when you’ve lost your children. Women go thru so much in addiction. It’s different than men. They’re judged so harshly because they often have children that suffer along with them, and they also often carry the shame of having had to turn tricks. I’m lucky for so many things. Most of all, becoming pregnant with my daughter. She was born when I was 32. Only kid I have. She saved me. I was happy to go into a residential program, and extra lucky that there was space for me. It’s been 20 years, and my daughter is still my life. She’s doing great, going to state Uni, working two jobs. I believe that I’ve taught her pretty well about the dangers of addiction. It runs in the family, on both sides. I had to bail on her father right away, cause he had no intention of quitting.

Unfortunately, like me, she had to grow up with no father. But as neither of us knew any different, (I did get the shit beat out of me by my mom’s boyfriends, tho), we don’t feel like we’ve missed anything. However, she knows that she can do things her own way. She also knows to tread carefully, because we have the nature/nurture thing going on thick and furious. We have to be cautious.
Check out a short documentary called “Foo Foo Dust”. It’s on UA-cam. That’s my mom, and my little brother. I was in program when they were filming, otherwise I’d have likely run those ghouls off. They made their career off of my family, then left them hanging. The end isn’t really the end; they both went back to using.
It’s hard to watch, but it’s life. And I’m glad that it’s at least been used to help train counselors, and as a deterrent for young people in danger of going over the edge. At least some good came of it.

I just don’t get to talk about this stuff to anyone. I wanted to work with youth at risk, but ended up just taking care of myself and my daughter. If wish I had given something more back to help others.
It just hurts so much to see people suffering over something that could be helped.

Oh, dear goodness, all I can say is I hope that they ( meaning the hospital staff) when I had to go into the hospital deserve a lot more praise than people give them. I was in the ER, very sick, unbeknownst to me, how sick I was. Let's just say I had downplayed my illness for months due to being afraid of hospital bills and covid. Needless to say, what started as what I presumed was just Edema and Cellulitis (which it was, but there was more), turned into two blood transfusions, An endoscopy, Colonoscopy, MRI, CT scan, heart echo, and a battery of other tests. Turns out it was actually severe Anemia, PE, DVT, and intesive GERD. On top of the other stuff. While there I had the nicest nurses and staff and I always treated them with respect and kindness. I know their job is hard.
We also had a code blue. I asked nicely to my nurses, "When a patient passes away do you guys feel, you know Sad? that you've lost a patient"? They told me honestly, yes, but they have to move on and shake it off because it's sadly part of their job.
Another thing * sorry for so long* this just got me in my feels, is don't be the patient that's always pushing the buttons. I can tell you that the nurses get annoyed. How do I know? My room was across from the nurses station and trust me, I heard it all!
It sucks that you in the USA have to pay-and that fact can cause people to not get healthcare when not getting it makes it worse!

Oh the things you must have heard next to an ER nurses station. We have our own sense of humor. 😂
My dad was a nurse. They do get sad. Many things he'd seen and dealt with bothered him and he HAD to shake it off. That doesn't mean he was always able to.
Honestly dealing with the passing of patients or hearing a bad diagnosis for them is why I knew I couldn’t be a nurse. I would get too emotionally tied up with the patients. So I work as a med lab tech (I analyze the blood that gets drawn). This way I can help patients but behind the scenes.
That " hey does anyone want to get a drink after work?" Is spot on in the medical field lol

I left the medical field for a reason. Now binge watching your videos is making me miss it. I hate you a little for that, everything is so accurate. I'm actually missing the constant insanity of caregivers and patients, the bed bug outbreaks! That's not normal! I miss that patient that exacerbated his HTN because he can only take his meds with pickle juice instead of water, or the patient who was noncompliant with her meds because she dumped them all in a jar of peanut butter and used a spoon AM, noon and PM. She just grabbed a spoonful whenever it was time for her meds. Aaaaahh memories...

@@creamcheeseandpirates I finished college in 2015. Things have already changed a lot since then. There will also be a full generation of out trans people who have navigated those systems before you. That means you don't have to be the first to explain these things to administration, but it also means there are trans adults who will have your back, and we'll be damned if you go through what we did.

I'm a Boomer who was surfing the Wave of Acceptance Before It Was Kool. I don't care what someone IS. Depending on what the "Is" they are is. If you're Gay? Trans? Not my Fuqking Business! But, if someone "Is" an Asshole, he might make it my business by what he DOES. We had a 19 year old patient who was so beautiful , she had infective endocarditis and admitted to licking her needles. She escaped multiple times to use heroin and she always came back. Sadly she passed , I think I will never forget her. Isabelle.
That's one of the most tragic things I've ever read. Thanks for sharing. I wish I was 19 and beautiful again (sigh) but consider myself blessed. Because of loving parents and caring teachers, I never was and will never be high on illegal drugs. Get high on life/reality.

I REALLY wanna see something like this as a sitcom. Don’t get me wrong! I loved scrubs! Still rewatching it occasionally till this day, but it can be over the top at times and this is just gold! In a more calm way! It does need a Dr. Cox though🤣

I had this happen when working on the medical floor of the hospital. Patient said he was just going out for a cigarette. Police found him a couple of hours later about 10 blocks away pushing the IV pole with one hand and the wheelchair wheel with the other hand.
Can you please explain me why does medical staff react so intensively to a patient who walked off with an IV, lets say just with the venous catheter without any kind of fluid /medicines being poured in it at the moment. I mean are they worried the patient is going to use this IV for some kind of drug use? If he is addicted he will just get some needle and sooner or later will get high anyway
Because they have a clean access to their veins RIGHT NOW. If they've been in the hospital they haven't gotten their drug of choice and more than likely going through withdrawals. No having to search for a needle, they just need their supply.

@@annakowalska4323 The other issue, apart from drug use, is that an IV cannula is a source of infection. The risk of developing a serious skin or blood infection increases every day it is left in.
Got out of the Nursing world years ago here in Australia. Definitely flashbacks. Like you were born for the position!!
I have to say, as someone with chronic health issues, there have been times I wished I could just leave the iv in. I wasn’t sick enough for a pic line, but needing a new iv placed every other day (and being a hard stick) made the prospect of running away with it seem not crazy.
I completely agree with you. During my last week-long hospital stay I had to have my IV replaced three times and on one occasion it took seven attempts before they managed it. I don't care about needles but I absolutely dread IVs.
Why every other day? They are usually good for at least 72°
@@PrimateProductions Because they infiltrate and have to be replaced. Veins don't always hold/last 72 hours.
@@PrimateProductions it was after I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had surgery to have my thyroid removed. I had trouble regulating my calcium for months. It would stabilize and then plummet every couple of days. Sometimes I would only need oral medication, sometimes iv. We didn’t know when it would stabilize for good. It was a miserable time.
I feel this sooo much. I have type 2 , UC, endometriosis, PCOS, antithrombin 3, mtfhr, CML, and I am like I dare you to give me one more diagnosis.

i live in a small town. urgent care will tell me go to to the ER. or go see my dr. they honestly thought i was kidding when i told them that my dr office was closed. when they found out i was NOT lying, they told me to go to ER. we have a really crappy urgent care. i don't mind saying this, because i do work in health care. also, its not the first time they refused to see me for a non emergency and told me to go to the er.

I once came close to running off with an I.V. I had a nasty anxiety reaction to the anti-nausea medication in said I.V. Got to love when they need to give you a med to counteract the med needed to counteract the side effect of a just prescribed med.
Me too!! The worse reaction I have ever had to a medication was when they gave me IV Phenergan for nausea and it made me feel like I was losing mind...couldn't sit still...even just my clothing touching my skin drove me crazy!!
@@PrimateProductions Akathisia? It’s awful!!! I get that as a side effect from Droperidol (which they use as an anti-nausea med for me because I don’t have the genes needed to process Ondanestron).
@@PrimateProductions I was in the hospital for a long time once, close to a month, and they were giving me IM phenergan. It totally screwed up my skin for nearly two years, nerve pain, etc. It's on my hell no list now.
Hi, I am a pharmacist and in fact the same exact thing happened to me when I was sick in the ER after receiving Reglan. Severe akathisia. I just left the ER and removed the peripheral IV myself. In the moment (being sick from something else and tired) I did not think of it too much and panicked but in retrospect I believe the nurse pushed the medication too quickly. It was the first time I ever received Reglan and I don't believe I will ever want to again...
My mom once had a doctor tell her, " were gonna prescribe this medication, and it'll have these side effects, but that's OK because we'll also prescribe this other medication to counter the side effects ". My mom told the doctor, no they wouldn't, because she wasn't taking the first medication !

I literally had a kidney stone one day and was dying in pain and the local ER wouldn’t give me pain medication until someone showed up to drive me because I had driven myself there, after waiting another 2 hours, in AGONY even AFTER my ride arrived I finally took out my own IV, wrapped my arm as tightly as possible with my sock and drove 45 minutes to the nearest hospital other than that one, my brother said it was the most savage thing he’d ever seen... it was actually very stupid but I felt like I was dying and didn’t care too much atm
I completely get it. I had kidney stones, but live on an island. Had to take the fire boat to the mainland, and *of course* that day was windy enough there were white caps. Every wave the boat hit would like getting shot. Got to the other side, into the ambulance, and they had to wait to administer the morphine because I was dehydrated from throwing up every 30 seconds. Didn't end up getting medicine until we were about 5 minutes away from the hospital. My wait wasn't as long as yours, but the damn waves had me a broken man.
I had an obstructed gall bladder with gall stones impacted where it connects to the pancreas/intestines. Mind you, I’m a RN at a hospital further away, but I was in so much pain I went to the local. The doctor didn’t do any tests, actually told me he thought I was an addict and I was drug seeking and he personally ripped out my IV and told me to leave!! I was crying and fevered and in some horrible pain. My Mother drove me to my hospital. They gave me some meds and did a CT. Found the issue, admitted me and had it out the next day. I filed a grievance against the doc and hospital and I was assured he was no longer practicing there, so, I didn’t sue (should have). Anyway, I wound up with a blood clot in my intestines a few years later and guess who my doc was. He sent me home AGAIN. I went back the next morning and was flown to my hospital. I did sue that time. 😡
@@bettyframe8044 I'm sorry you had to go through that. :( I had my gallbladder taken out in February, kept getting told it was an ulcer before that. I've also had many kidney stones, a handful requiring surgery, I always hate the looks I get until they do the CT then they play nice. :/
@@bettyframe8044 I know how you feel, I went into the ER with chest pains, worried it might be a heart attack. The ER doc didn't run any tests, accused be of doing cocaine and kicked me out of the ER. I reported the issue to my primary care who dismissed the pain as likely a spasming esophagus. A year later, almost to the day, I was back in the ER with the same but more severe chest pain that nearly caused me to pass out. They checked and got me into surgery immediately. They found the left descending aorta 100% (first heart attack) and the right descending aorta 95% blocked (second heart attack). They gave me an two stints in the right aorta. I had to spend two weeks in the hospital recovering so they could give me a second angeo and two more stints in the left descending.

I'm guilty of this. Once when I had really bad pelvic pain, I called about three ERs to see which ones were less packed and then went there.
My local area actually has technology to tell you where wait times are lowest.
While it may not be an emergency, some urgent needs still have to be treated in the ER, not urgent care.
I have called about wait times when I actually thought I was dying, ended up needing emergency surgery. So! While most of the time that's true, definitely not all the time. ^_^

People in LA run away with IVs in too. Went to nursing school in Los Angeles and saw it happen. Never did see it happen when working in the bay Area but doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Heck as a patient I'd go outside with my IV in my robe to have a cigarette. Got yelled at by the nurses upon return every time.
At that point I'd be drinking on the job 🤣

LOL I once had a patient go missing off the floor who had a heart monitor and an IV. We looked for him everywhere and finally got a call from the liquor store down the street from the hospital that a man in a hospital gown was trying to buy a bottle of liquor. The police had to bring him back then he refused to get out of the car and the floor nurse had to go down with his clothes and papers to sign for him to go AMA. She took the heart monitor back and took the IV out and the cops took him home. I told her she should have tried to get her hospital gown back too. Oh and I forgot the IV was heplocked so all he had was access not the whole pole thing. 🤣🤣🤣

I'd share; those turkey sandwiches are especially tasty considering all things. Might be the right combo of protein, carbs, iceberg that's filling and energizing. I'm thinking now they were a bit more abundant at off hours and better quality because kitchens knew they were actually making them mostly for staff 😄 and Patient’s lucky enough to have staff offer when all other actual meal times were missed because of testing or procedures, or instructions.
the thing that sucks about the " Summer Teeth" is funny to a point but I recently had a heart attack and acute myocarditis from the second vaccine, the day I got released I got into a really bad car accident and my airbag didn't deploy, my face hit the dashboard full force knocking out three of my bottom teeth, I've never used drugs I'm a phlebotomy, and a MA I also am a hospice nurse, and now I'm looked like a crackhead wherever I go so I wear a mask everywhere. I guess it just hit home with me because not all ppl are drug addicted just because they are missing teeth, I can't wait to get partial dentures cause I'll never be able to afford implants.
I finally got my two top teeth fixed this summer. I have been saving for 7 years to be able to afford it.

The running IV is easy to find, the one with the hep lock... that gets way harder and usually is off the floor between doses of antibiotics and they lifted all the sandwiches and sodas from meal cart.

Might be referring to the contraptions often used on morphine or other pain killer IVs. It's locked in a case so the bag can't be messed with. I worked transport, which meant I was in charge of wheeling patients around the hospital for various scans and operations. Part of the job included sanitizing equipment during downtime. We were supposed to immediately report if any of those lockboxes still contained a bag so it could be properly disposed of.
@@wufftwenty-sixteen5567 heparin lock, it’s heparinized saline used to ‘lock’ the line between uses so it doesn’t get a blood clot and make the iv useless. Usually used with mid-lines and picc lines, always with central lines.
@@wufftwenty-sixteen5567 hep lock is like an IV that's disconnected, but can quickly reconnect. They tend to put them in women in labor "just in case" they need emergency medication or blood transfusion, even if they don't actually need an IV at first.
In the past when I was being treated, I was stuck in the toilet and my panicked mother didn't think of looking for me in the toilet and instead immediately called the police. My mother thought I ran away because I didn't want to have treatment 😑

I was prepping for surgery and was anxious. My doc busts in and was like you are pregnant I can’t do the procedure. I said I told the nurse I’ve been on my period for 3 days. Well I’m not doing it you’re pregnant. I screamed obviously not if I’m bleeding! Thanks for letting me know I lost a pregnancy now do my surgery. Still wouldn’t do it. I ripped the ice off the wall and walked outside and tossed the iv and shit. My mom came running after me. What a shit doc. The nurse knew my history of pregnancy loss bc we spoke about it. She was there and told the doc and he didn’t care. I’ve lost at least 6, that I know of but I have two daughters post back surgery by a different doc (who ended up hurting me instead of fixing me)

I think there should be a law that doctors cannot refuse medical care to women due to pregnancy. If it's not their body, not their choice. It's crazy to me how we put the wellbeing of a clump of DNA before the health of full-grown women. This nonsense has got to stop.

To think that my infusion center sent me home with an IV to avoid having to place one every day for IV antibiotics 🤦♀️ I’m an easy stick with no fear of needles but for some reason they thought leaving the IV was safer. I had urgent care remove it and went to a different hospital to request a picc line and they obliged. Maybe they understood I was clueless about drugs. I wonder if this still happens.

Earlier this year I experienced getting an IV cannula put in for the first time and I really empathise with those who need PICC lines or semi-permanent IV ports - I can't imagine how unpleasant it would be to have one that wasn't designed to be used long-term.
I had a central venous port for chemo. Putting it in hurt a little but taking it out was painless. Having it was nice. Almost impossible to miss and first stick was good every time.
@@lrmackmcbride7498 We asked about me getting a port, since I kept ending up in hospital every 1-2 months (chronic illness), but apparently that's drug-seeker behaviour and merely asking about it influenced the level of care I received :(
Edit: I should add that my original comment was made before hospital visits and cannulas started to become a regular thing for me. Since then, I've had a really bad experience where it took three nurses and a phlebotomist over 20 attempts to set an IV, including attempts on each foot. I suppose it was good exposure therapy, I no longer have any anxiety about needles, lol.

When I was pregnant I had a PICC line and before I knew the "value" if a semi permanent IV line I always wondered why people in the ER were jealous 😂🤣😂🤣 I had that shit for my ENTIRE pregnancy and hated it and they were envious. I have absolutely done that. I was removing it myself as I was on my way out the door to the sidewalk. Wasn't because I wanted to use it to get high, it was because I was late for my appointment with my neurosurgeon, whose office was upstairs in the very same hospital, after I had been waiting to get in to see him for months. The nurses were NOT happy, but I was tracked down in his waiting room, holding gauze where my I.V. had been, so 🤷♂️

Once I was admitted to the ER and they took me in within an few hours. I had food poisoning. The doctor said I needed to be hydrated. So they pop in a Peripheral venous catheter for the IV liquid. But I never gotten the liquid. It was just the catheter stuck in my vain. I was now sitting in the ER for 6 hours just with the darn catheter. I was going up to the nurse station once an hour they just told me go sit down. At this point 6 hours later after I seen the doctor and he said that I really needed to be hydrated. I ask the nurse once again I need water. She said no. So I asked where is the water fountain. So just rolled her eyes and sat down. This point I am thirsty hungry and tired. So I went into the bathroom drink some water from the sink. Then I said f*** this s***. I went to a different part of the ER asked if they would help me figure out why am I sitting with out an IV drip. They sat me in the same area as before. So I went back up to the same nurse she said sit down again. I said do you know why I am here or even know my name. I been here for 7 hours now please help me. Then I got very upset I went to the other side of the ER again. I said you better take the catheter out of me. The nurse said no. So I preceded to pull it out myself. But a different nurse came and took it out. As the 3rd nurse pulled it out; the original nurse said oh I found your file and ha ha you do need fluids. I just gave her a dirty look and walked out. I just went to 7-11 got some Pedialyte and went home to go to sleep. Next day I went to my family doctor she took a stool sample and gave me some antibiotics because I had bacteria due to the food. I have diabetes and a heart condition they didn't believe me for some reason when I told them I need to eat because I getting low blood sugar. They just need to look at my wrist band and my file to see my condition. And they were not busy. They just had 9 patients in the ER in total. 3 doctors, and my wing had 7 nurses just in my wing. The other wings had 3 nurses in each section. 15 orderly and 3 security guards. I had time to count.

Once in the mental hospital they forgot to take my IV out and I forgot as well. Just noted at home so took it out myself. Was no big deal and I don't really get why it's such a problem to run away with it. Drug users would get high anyway
It’s a more dangerous way to get high from my understanding- I’m assuming the hospital wants to not make it easy for drug users to use in such an unsafe way. That, plus I imagine it’s easier for more serious infections to occur during drug use if the users have an IV. this can likely lead to more bacterial infections, antibiotic use, and therefore the fun prospect of antibiotic resistant superbugs woooo. Basically, it’s just more responsible overall for them to take it out, so they aren’t seeing the same patient back in with more serious complications, which are often connected directly to non-sterile abuse of drugs.
I remember when I was 10 I had seven surgeries in one day and I was in the hospital for two weeks and on my discharge day I almost left with the I.V still in my arm….. I was already in the elevator headed downstairs to go home and the transport worker noticed so they sent me back upstairs to get my I.V taken out so I could go home.
