This reminds me of the time I went to the ER for severe abdominal pain. The doctor told me "you are full of shit. Literally. Like, up to your boobs." I somehow managed to laugh, despite being in pain. I really appreciate doctors and nurses who can talk to patients about embarassing or uncomfortable topics so with a sense of humor and sense of normalcy.

My instructor said nothing and watched me jump like 10 feet as it came pouring out, narrowly missing my face. I asked her later, why didn’t you say something to me before so I wouldn’t stand so close? Her response has lived with me through my career. My best friend is a nuclear medicine technician. She says the worst are the enemas with radioactive materials in them. You have to contain that poop until the radioactivity degrades. If there’s a poop blowout you are cleaning floors and then checking with a Geiger counter to make sure everything is gone.

This is too funny! As a retired RN, I think we all have *something* that we struggle with, at least at first. For me it was the sound of someone being deeply suctioned, especially through a trach. After 23 years in healthcare (10 as a CNA, 13 as an LPN) I used to SWEAR I could diagnose c-diff by its smell at a rate of being correct around 100%. I did agency work for several years so was in a new facility every few shifts. I could walk into a building I'd never been to before, make it as far as the main nurse's station and freeze, sniffing the air like a poop-finding hound dog. I'd sniff towards one hall then towards another, walking along until I discovered the "fragrant" room/patient. I'd look back at the guaranteed group of CNA's following me around curiously (or perhaps just wanting something to laugh at if it turned out I was simply a wing nut being crazy as wing nuts generally are lol) and ask in a loud whisper, "Who's got $20 that both the ladies/gentlemen in this room have c-diff? Any takers?? C'mon, I need gas and lunch money, y'all!" Either my nose's reputation preceded me or (more likely) the other CNA'S realized why that poop they'd just gagged over cleaning up on their last round smelled so familiar.. C-diff is a nightmarish smell that's almost impossible to adequately describe and utterly contagious. Nobody generally wanted to bet against me cause we all knew and despised THAT "fine fragrance"... Lord, I miss a lot of things about nursing work but to there's a few things that even after being away from the field a few years I STILL get that watery "I'm gonna blow chunks" feeling in the back of my throat over and c-diff is definitely one of them!

@@athmaid Yes for sure so we are sure to gown up. In the beginning you are always grossed out but nothing really faze you after a while. My 1st time I accidentally emptied out a colostomy bag full of 💩 on the patient and my shoes, clothes when trying to change it. I threw out the shoes and clothes that time. Needle punctures are what I'm scared of. It's a waiting game after getting tested for HIV and other diseases. You pray to God the patient is clean so u are safe🤞

Once while I was working the graveyard shift I had a patient suffering from dementia disimpact herself & drew a flower on the wall above her bed. She had made it for me she said. She was quite pleased with her artistic efforts.
We drew straws to see who put her in the shower & who cleaned the wall. I really lucked out, I was the charge nurse that night so I just did the charting!

As a caregiver for my mom, training as a COTA, working in a nursing home, and finally working as a home health caregiver (where one of my clients had C Diff and that was a whole situation) it will always be mucus for me. SO many people would hawk up loogies into Kleenex in front of me and I would have to turn my face and gag. In one skilled nursing facility a woman hawked up a horrible one then shoved the wet Kleenex into my hand and I gagged so hard I thought I’d vomit. Poop will never bother me as much as mucus.

My kid has cp and hypotonia, which also effects his gi system and he gets constipated. I've been giving enemas for years! Ever since his first pediatrician sent us to the emergency room for his first enema and I was like "why couldn't she just administer this?" So I started doing it at home... we also change his gtube button at home, you don't know how many time I've been asked why I don't just take him to the doctor for a new button or if he should go to the er... like NO I can't even trust my local er to check his placement properly, last time they blew out his balloon because they put the dye in the wrong port on his button and I had to take him to the children's hospital over an hour away because it was my last button. Now I keep 3 in stock at home at all times

Saw almost the same thing with a senior CNA and a new RN , about 22 year old male pt. , male CNA and female RN . She said I got this, we practiced in school . The mud came out ballistic and she was covered, he was sparkling clean. She passed out and covered all her backside too. He prevented her head from hitting the floor and pulled her away from the pt. He called for assistance, took care of the pt by himself, while the RN was sent to ER to get checked. The pt's family was extremely pleased with the care this pt received and sent the seasoned CNA cookies, a VISA gift voucher and a food card from Panera. The hospital gave him a sheet of paper, good job. The RN was fine but they never worked together again.
