Game of Thrones Writers Speak Out About The Fan's Backlash For The Show's Bad Ending!

  • Welcome back for another Game of Thrones Season 8 update video. In this video, I will be showing and discussing Game of Thrones' writers, David Benioff and Dan Weiss' new interview, with The Hollywood Reporter. During an exclusive new interview, Game of Thrones creators and writers finally address the backlash from the final season. Game of Thrones ended, and David Benioff and Dan Weiss had to figure out what to do next.
The writer-producers had made the biggest TV hit of the 21st century, and the most Emmy-winning drama of all time - and it was their very first show. HBO’s Thrones had a spectacular eight-season run, a global phenomenon that was reputationally marred by a 2019 final season that fans loudly considered disappointing. In the online space, at least, Benioff and Weiss’ obsessive, day-and-night efforts to pull off a production that was unprecedented in its difficulty were shrugged aside, according to James Hibberd, from the Hollywood Reporter.
After the finale, Benioff and Weiss, who never participated in social media and only reluctantly gave interviews, even when Thrones’ was at its pinnacle, did what they naturally do: They went almost entirely media silent. They didn’t talk about Thrones. They didn’t talk about their joint attempts at other projects (such as a Star Wars film). They didn’t talk about their $200 million Netflix overall deal, and they didn’t talk about their upcoming sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem - which is arguably an even bigger and wilder gamble than Thrones ever was.
Now they’re ready to talk - about all of it.
Images and video clips from Game of Thrones are property of their creators, used here under fair use.

I thought so, but I talked to a shop owner and asked what he thought about everyone's resolution of Season 8, and he said "I though everyone got the fate they deserved". I had never heard something so ignorant upto that point, even if it was an opinion, that opinion was justifiably wrong

@@TalkingThrones Yeah, the ones that didnt care about the actual story, and the fact that the ending made no sense in the context of it all. The whole build up of the Night King just wrapped up lazily, Little Finger the most cunning person in Westeros outdone by what, magic? Tyrion and Varys massively dumbified, Daenerys "goes mad" in the span of two episodes just for the sake of having their "Mad Queen" ending. Similar example could be made about pretty much every character in the show.
The only people that would like this are the same people that would flock to Fast and Furious (random arabic or roman number), or Marvel Something something every year, because its constant nonsense action and jokes without any meaning.

George RR talked in interviews about how him n HBO would’ve loved for the show to go on for at least 10 seasons if need be. But honestly it’s for the best it was a flop anyway. I just got done w the books n they’re much better anyway bc they left out so many interesting characters or they were in the show but their role fell to the way side. 4 years on, it still feels like reopening an old painful wound when i think about the final season of GOT, particularly the last 4 episodes which felt like being put through a mincer, legs first, enduring all the pain as it grinds up your body until your head is finally crushed at the end as you watch Bran the broken become King as he apparently has the best story, the Dothraki being fine with the death of their queen & leader just bugger off back across the sea and Jon Snow go off up north on a holiday beyond the wall.....finishing on a shuffling of chairs around a table with a few jokes.

If Benioff/Weiss were too exhausted, bored or whatever to give a proper ending they could have handed it to someone else, like Ryan Condal & Miguel Sapochnik, or anyone else that have already worked on GOT. They could have stayed as advisors. Storylines would have been properly completed and this could have been the greatest show from start to finish. Just nearing the finish the artist just starts splatting paint on canvas and shows signs of boredom, neglect and disrespect. Those two are well capable of producing something decent. The oversimplification of that article illustrates the purpose. They are mitigating the damage and the extremely lazy writing in season five through eight, and reducing the fans concerns to just season eight. This is done in advance of promoting the new show. They’re hoping that this will serve as an apology when it isn’t one. The moment Dan and Dave were left to their own devices without any source material their egos Did the writing for them. They need to apologize to the fan base and need to acknowledge that they got lazy and bored. That’s the simple truth of it. If they don’t come out and apologize prior to this new show coming out, they’re in for a big surprise and likely, this will be the last show they ever write.

the problem with game of thrones started with season 5, but too many people didn't care because most people's favourite character was dany and that was one of the only characters who actually had effort put into them. as soon as dany was "ruined" everyone went in an uproar but imo if they had dragged out the arc they wanted with her it could have made sense and been good to watch.
the dialogue from the first 4 seasons had elegance and immersive beauty to it. season 5s was ok but fast forward to season 6, 7, 8 they all start sounding like they are from the 21st century with the modernised dialogue. a quick google search will show each season had a decline of dialogue from the books and this is 100% a big factor as to why the show had declined so fast, stick to the bloody source material why do people never understand this.
in the later seasons they also focused too much on dany jon and tyrion which i know george himself has said are his "main characters" but again looking at the older seasons, there was so many times minor characters got massive parts and it really helped to sell how big the world of westeros was. i dont want type too much more as most people arent going to even bother to read this but, the fast travelling was ridiculous, it took ned and robert three episodes to get from winterfell to kingslanding and during those episodes we had amazing worldbuilding whereas in season 7 we get a 5 minute clip of jon and dany on a boat going back to winterfell from the wall...
i could go on about so many more things but i'm just gonna leave it as i look like a crybaby moaning over Game of Thrones but when you are as passionate as i was, its annoying to see it wasted, now we just got to pray George will finish his books (he deffo wont).

They were never good at adapting. They were always more interested in showing off actors than the story. Even when the show was good they made several unnecessary changes. Remember Ross? Or how they butchered the House of the Undying, one of the best scenes in the books? Furthermore, the show didn't get bad because they ran out of books. That's a myth! They still had two more books when they decided to abandon the plot. That's at least two seasons. It could be as many as four if they did what they did with A Storm of Swords.
The Winds of Winter would definitely be out by now if they took their time and actually listened to George. As it is he didn't really start to write until 2019. What he wrote before then was miniscule at best. My theory is that he fell into a depression because of how the show was handled. When you're depressed it's really hard to muster up the energy to write a book.

Dan and Dave did absolutely brilliant work when they had someone else’s outline of the story and has someone else write the dialogue. As soon as those 2 items fell upon their plate it was all down hill from there.
They’re good at bringing other peoples ideas and words to life. Just not their own.

Jesus.. Didn't realize they distanced themselves this much from the show and the community.
They must be pretty embarrassed by how bad the ending was. If im being honest, I think they had a big responsibility to end the show properly that they obviously didn't fulfill and they know it. Between the massive success the show had and theyre relativley young age I dont know why they didnt just put in a few extra years to give it a proper ending. Honestly it really was just unprofessional and lazy.

I understand burnout, but they had a huge responsibility. Storytelling has the power to bring people together, shape how we view the world, affect people’s emotions, employ people, and more. Got was the biggest story for a decade. They should’ve transitioned the show to do the story justice, especially if they knew they only wanted to do 75 episodes.

But fans a responsibility as well just because your attached to the work that is artists and writers put out doesn’t mean you should hold a four year grudge, I was upset at the ending as well but y’all get over it. Writers are there to bring people together, but it’s y’all responsibility to respect the art for good or bad and interpret it I. Your way.

It's tragic that they can't celebrate such a feat of television. I agree with you that the first four seasons are absolute gold and the ending did not cause me to view the entire series negatively. They could rectify some of this if they got on board with other writers to do a sequel, which I thought SNOW was going to be.

To quote Stannis, "The good doesn't wash away the bad, nor the bad the good". The final 2 seasons don't cancel out the 6 great seasons before them. Nor do the 6 good seasons absolve the 2 horrid ones. We can enjoy the good times and critique the bad. GoT is still my favorite show of all time and that's unlikely to change anytime soon.

Apparently, they wrote almost 3/4 of the episodes from the first 4 seasons, but I mean, if you're just adapting material that's already been written in a book, the shittiness of your writing isn't always gonna show until you have to come up with your own content, hence seasons 6 to 8 being awful.

I wasn't offended by the end of GoT. Then again, I wasn't offended by the last three Star Wars films. I wasn't a superfan of either series, so I was cool with it.
On the other hand, I came unglued with how they ended Dexter and The Black List. (I can't talk about the latter)

Seasons 7 and 8 definitely looked and felt rushed and disconnected from earlier seasons. It really doesn’t matter what Dan and Dave say, they rushed it and wanted move on. It doesn’t matter what I think if they should be welcomed back into the Fandom. I’m just the fan and viewer. To me it’s just disappointing how two guys with little to no experience in writing, directing and even producing a Fantasy Epic such as this raze it to the ground.

It killed the story, it killed the fans mentaly and emotionaly in a way that even after all these years i get sick when i think about the last season and this is something only got can do. Also it has reduced the rewatch quality to zero, if really nothing has a satisfying ending whats the point
