I love how apparently targeting an advertisement towards a certain race/religion can be counted as 'discrimination' when that's basically what marketing is. You have an advertisement and you have a target audience, there's nothing inherently discriminatory about it. -_-
The mindset of wanting to move forward and implement is the issue like everything else wrong with the 21st century it always wants to fix what's not broken
DestinationMan but they’ve allowed the means for it - let’s not pretend this is some algorithmic accident and that Facebook was trying to fine tune niche targeted ads - it’s a deceptive and immoral way of marketing
This really shouldn't be a surprise... being a business owner, this is a great tool. And for all of y'all complaining, you probably post more information YOURSELF on your timeline to help us grow. So you only have yourself to blame
Am I the only person who completely ignores ads? I rarely use Facebook but all that add space is dead to me. Even in search engines I tend to skip the first several hits sometimes pages.
Nope! But it's annoying if/when you click on someone by misstake & then you get comercial text messages. Got really angry when I got an text message ad for a online casino 12 a clock friday night, I don't gamble but imagine someone struggling with it, being bored & maybe a little drunk & it was payday.. I had by misstake clicked on an online casino ad a few days prior.. but because of that horrible marketing plan, the time & date that the text was sent I will forever hate that company & tell people about it, almost made me sick.. greed is such a terrible thing, there is a reason why it's a death sin in many religions & a huge nono in all the other bigger ones..
As a data scientist who works for a company that also use personal data: Google is also collecting data from you, your comment has been processed by algorithms related to natural language processing, then they will label you with attributes. And the phone you use, or perhaps all the devices sharing with the same IP, they technically can start tracking all of them. And most of the data are collected on the server side, ad block only blocks the pop out of an ad, but how your device communicates with a server still gives away tons of information, iPhone is more subtle (we cannot steal much information from it), but Android is like a mess, many companies even collect your text messages and call records.
I find Brave browser does very well. Also pay the 70 bucks for 2 years of a VPN and use it. It's worth every penny. I use NordVPN because it lets me have 6 devices on my one plan and doesn't keep info on me, but there are plenty of other highly reputable VPNs out there too. Do a search for best VPN and find the one you like the most.
As a small business manager i found that advertising via preferred location option is the most effective in sales and engagement... Some of my ads are not approved by facebook.. And they are not telling why such post can or cannot be advertised..
I’ve been dealing with kidney stones for a few months and I’ve only ever googled things about it or texted people about it. Last week I got an add post on Facebook about kidney stone pills. That freaked me out
Playtrack22 True. Anything that uses internet access, I don't have. Sure, I get made fun of because I have no idea what Facebook, Instagram, UA-cam, or Tinder is, but I'm happy that they don't have my info because I don't use them.
In zucks testimony he said that they don't give data to the advertisers but the advertisers tell facebook the group of people to target and facebook makes the ad placements. No data is given out unless in an illegal breach
That offline activity thing is actually really scary. I am so glad I don't use facebook. Target with peoples emails?!! This is insane! How can people think this is OK!!!
I've literally never clicked on ad on Facebook. Not a fan of targeted advertising. Honestly if I see the same ad more than 5 times a day, I mentally blacklist the company responsible for the ad.
This is the reason why I rarely post info or pictures of myself.. I've always know the internet as a dangerous place if you post too much info. The fact is if your not secretive then organizations will just abuse that knowledge cuz nothing disappears off the internet. So its the perfect place to find dirt and stuff.
It's like McDonald's isn't in the fast food business, they're in the real estate business. Or Cinemark isn't in the movie industry, they're in the selling popcorn business.
If this bothers you, it doesn’t matter because you’re one person and Facebook is changing the world for literally billions of people. You’re unimportant. Put your phone down and go do something fun that makes you happy
Sourabh Samal machine learning itself isn't difficult to execute. The problem is you need a ton of data to make it work well. Facebook has an insane amount of data and processing power which makes their machine learning more successful.
Im an internet marketer and all websites do this. It's not as big of a deal as people think. I'd rather get ads for products and services that I'm actually interested in as opposed to getting ads for adult diapers. Nobody is really spying on you. I'm the guy who buys your data from Facebook and I'm telling you that all companies are doing it and you shouldn't care. Obviously I'm biased but I'm also a consumer so I can tell you that I personally don't give a shit. Other companies buy my data too and I don't care.
In every mistakes one made it's not intentional. Because perhaps the technology are so modern. We didn't dare to use it properly. The reason why we logged messy. Each supposedly has the responsibility Perhaps due to our curiosity Childlike attitude hence. Then our errors becomes so realistic. But don't worry Facebook we still loves the way your job to push thru for the sake of connectivity to everyone worldwidely. We are so glad you are there for us. THANK you so much. Hope to make the best out of it.
It's ridiculous how everyone wants everything for free. Either put up with the ads or pay for a membership. Either way, it's a win win for Facebook and etc..
The average facebook user who passed high school or have a little bit of sense would know this, and from what I've seen they're completely fine with that. They love using facebook. I'm not a user, i have an account but I don't put my actual real information. But the targeted ads are actually pretty good and worth while to find out about. Facebook target ads is really useful to small businesses who don't have the capital that Uber, AirBnb has. Or those companies who aren't born in Silicon Valley. But also for individuals who are looking for the right audience. So the way I see it, so long as people know what they're signing up for, which is; knows what they trade for Facebook's 'connecting the world' services. Then, so be it. There's no such thing as 'discrimination' or anything racist about targeting an audience, it's just Marketing. If I want to sell Chinese stuff for Chinese people, then I would target those audience..
OFfic3R1K this system allowed russian trolls to target disinformation at people would likely vot dem. It also made it possible for companies like banks to discriminate their ads to not target minority groups. Simple enough.
Michael Carpenter i dont see the problem for running an ad for mainly white/black/asian or any specific race. The advertiser is going to pick the audience that is most likely to follow up on the ad. It’s not a new thing exclusive to fb. You can send out mail advertisement and only send it to a black neighborhood or a white neighborhood.
Michael Carpenter Facebook is like an open resource tho, how would they be able to tell what was discriminatory or political sabotage? I really think that more laws need to be put in place to regulate the industry and a system of checks and balances. Facebook alone can't be to blame here.
the user data collection methods, and ad targeting precision are unprecedented. Unlike previous advertising methods, they violate the right to privacy.
Please do a video about how Cambridge Analytica influence voters for Trump, Obama or sell any product with the data, that is the stuff that has real implications.
None of this is hidden. It literally takes a few minutes of research to have just a general concept, of how Facebook collects and applies information to advertising on their platform.
Even google keeps track of our data. Google even knows which places you have been. When I was learning digital marketing these were some of the basics we learnt. You can get email addresses of 1000000 people for couple of dollars. If you are willing to pay more money then you can get email addresses with mobile numbers, credit card details, your bank details & how much do you spend every month so that relevant ads will hit you. Google knows everything about us.
This video is awesome like all vice videos... but it is entirely clickbait. Can you tell me what's "hidden" by facebook, please? Users have a personal advertiser profile. If you click on "create ad", you can see the exact screenings you are sharing in the video. If a user want to know, he can understand everything. If he doesn't, he can simply know he is the product of Facebook. And this is a public fact. Nothing is "hidden".
How about instead of attacking advertising companies, we focus on educating our students in logic and critical thinking so they are not susceptible to B.S. that will always be peddled by bad faith actors everywhere? Facebook does much more good in the world than "harm." This video makes Facebook look so evil. lol. By the way, you guys don't understand the meaning of "dark post." Anyway, keep up the good work with your other videos. :)
Yep but you are only confusing the problem at the core of CA's scandal here, on one hand you got advertisers that don't see your personal data, on the other you have external apps that takes your data (w/ permissions) and then does wth it wants with it. I don't mind the former as much as the later and rather than "regulating facebook" it should really be "regulating the internet" as a whole, US is lacking on privacy laws compared to Europe.
It’s not your data that Facebook is selling, it’s your attention.

Eric Thomas
That only depends on advertisers. Facebook didn't decide that.

Arbi Givargis Hood for you mate, I also stop using it like 3 years ago
Justin Santoro You tube also now what we like You tube know what I like to watch during the day and what I like to watch during the night
What r u talking about he is a reptilian, THIS was his plan for world domination
Is not just Facebook
UA-cam is owned by google, one of the largest advertising companies in the world. So You're not wrong.
Exactly. Advertisers have been getting that data on people for decades.
So what is best way to protect our data in internet? There all search engine using our data to ad.
Mark Zuckerberg is a reptile! That’s probably why he allowed this to happen

you *think* you ignore them but you dont, subconciously, those ads are now in your brain whether you want them there or not. by design.
Use BRAVE browser if you want to avoid Google tracking you. You'll be surprised how many ads and trackers are on each UA-cam video alone.
Don't install apps that you don't trust. Simple. Use a web browser with ublock origin. Or at least disable certain permissions if you have to have it.
Always.
That doesn't do anything to stop Advertisers from doing this
That is why Facebook is pre-installed on nearly every single cell phone these days.

I’ve been dealing with kidney stones for a few months and I’ve only ever googled things about it or texted people about it. Last week I got an add post on Facebook about kidney stone pills. That freaked me out
I'm so glad I don't have Facebook period
Thats ok, neither do I, but they still build a profile of us anyway.
same..... never have never will don't need it

This was a good video. Nuff said.
One of your less dog shit videos Vice, good job!
Pan Terra 😈🌎
What a HATEFUL childish mentality, sure glad I don't have to fall victim to your company daily.
One of your less dog shit comments Pan Terra, good job!
Aneles S triggered?
Pan Terra Yet, you will still just keep watching. That is fucking weird.
That offline activity thing is actually really scary. I am so glad I don't use facebook. Target with peoples emails?!! This is insane! How can people think this is OK!!!
Facebook's profiling is not perfect. I checked it recently and everything was wrong. Also you can disable targeted ads if you go into your settings.
I love vice
Advertising is everywhere, you can't run away from it!
I always hide the ads I never click on them but they sure the hell get on my nerves.
I have no Facebook, and people around me say that I’m hiding something or from someone. I just find it to be a waste of time. Period
I've literally never clicked on ad on Facebook. Not a fan of targeted advertising. Honestly if I see the same ad more than 5 times a day, I mentally blacklist the company responsible for the ad.
Useful information, thank you!
Good video! Information that I've been looking for since this whole scandal came about

I shudder
at the thought of how much of our data is in the wrong hands
right now.....
I see no wrong ads targeting certain races.
Great video, thanks for the explanation
Outstanding video. Thanks for talking about internet marketing pieces of info.
Hey Vice. I was wondering if you could do a similar investigation into UA-cam's algorithms?
everyone just go and like a bunch of random crap
Great video, thanks
I learned a lot of new things) Thanks
It's like McDonald's isn't in the fast food business, they're in the real estate business. Or Cinemark isn't in the movie industry, they're in the selling popcorn business.
Very good, thanks
In the UK we won't be allowed up upload that list to facebook unless we get a user's consent due to new GDPR regulations
Divorced Libertarian Brony = your next fav indie band
Cool video vice🎉
The mistake was when we thought things on the Internet should be free. It made companies go for advertising as business model.
If this bothers you, it doesn’t matter because you’re one person and Facebook is changing the world for literally billions of people. You’re unimportant. Put your phone down and go do something fun that makes you happy
How do they know ? AI, machine learning. They can do that with the amount of research scientists they have.
Sourabh Samal machine learning itself isn't difficult to execute. The problem is you need a ton of data to make it work well. Facebook has an insane amount of data and processing power which makes their machine learning more successful.
Justin Santoro I agree. 2 billion users. Each user with hundreds of data points. Imagine that.
Zuckerburg looks like he's in a constant state of fear. Like he's afraid of slipping and saying the wrong thing
it feels like people are only finding out what marketing really is ...
Im an internet marketer and all websites do this. It's not as big of a deal as people think. I got “Stop! Don’t advertise on Facebook” LMAO
Interesting video, thank you)

Just delete it
Thanks for telling me this now.
It's ridiculous how everyone wants everything for free. Either put up with the ads or pay for a membership. Either way, it's a win win for Facebook and etc..
Facebook sucks
Microsoft too
He does not even give to charity
Is terrible that Facebook can escape their blame and guilt by blaming the bots or the programs in the computer.
This is some big brother shit. Absolutely scary.
What other social networks sell ads well?
It only worx on those weak in mind.
So the adverts on pornhub are alright then?
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google. THEY ALL DO THIS. Search for something and you will be flooded with those ads.
as a facebook user i had no regret... im internet person after all(at least my life feels a bit happier )
Kudos to ProPublica!
Big brother has arrived and he is "data science." God help us all.

Running Ublock Origin and a good VPN on all my devices at least means i never see any of Facebook's ads.
This type of advertisement helps small business, otherwise, they would have to compete with large players for the same ad space.
adblocker blocks the ads. Thank you.
I think google is so scary app
this is a FB ad... probably they just paid each other with services... "I'll distribute your content and you make a article about me!"
The video is 4 years old. Are there new ways?
I searched something on Google and talked about it in messenger and it started showing ad on my insta account. I was like wtf .
Wait. Are you seriously making an issue of an advertiser being able to reach their target audience? I don't get the complaint of this video.

Michael Carpenter but you don't have to mention your race on Facebook. How would they even know that you're minority?
People need to switch to Twitter already; it’s SO much better.
Who is not using an ad blocked in 2018! Hello!!!
wait what ads? i use adblock lol
overwrought sound design obscured solid journalism
Now I know this sounds crazy but I know how to avoid all this... Don’t use Facebook.
Custom audience = lookalike audience
Use Brave Browser. The revolution is now
Please do a video about how Cambridge Analytica influence voters for Trump, Obama or sell any product with the data, that is the stuff that has real implications.

Turning a privacy issue into a racial one. Way to get more clicks.
Scary
Not bad video

vice is milking off this facebook crap
definitely seth rogen pretending to be a reporter.
Instagram too...
Trump is about to start world war three and y’all worried about ads? Just scroll past them? Like wtf
What about Google ? They target people too
What about...youtube ads? TAM TAM TAM
