More Kentucky Colonels videos please! Dan Issle and Artist Gilmore would be good. Everyone loved Louie! A fan favorite. I use to go to Kentucky Colonel games as a very young boy and they are the reason for my love of basketball to this day. I met Louie years after he retired and he was a super nice guy.

Thank you for this great video about a player I had forgotten about and very much should not have. Played his entire prime in the 9 years the ABA existed. Amazing!

Love this video. ABA feels so forgotten when we talk about the greats, Dr J and others always feel left off. Appreciate you shining a light on a sharpshooter

Agreed. IMO Dr. J would probably be considered in the top 10 all time players if he played his whole career in the NBA

Little Louie ? I’ve never heard of him , man could he shoot at an elite level . And like you said , not just a standard three point shooter , but on the run , sideways - quick , fake , turn around and release . Can’t believe he’s faded into obscurity . Thank you for this history lesson !

Used to follow the Colonels on the independent channel out of Cincinnati. I loved the ABA.

Thank you for shedding light on this largely forgotten player. I grew up watching Louie making the 3-pointer exciting. When we’d see that red, white and blue basketball spin from 25 feet out, it was like watching a pinwheel on the 4th of July. Loved Louie!

It's kind of sad that the old NBA establishment did EVERYTHING to shun the ABA. Yeah, I know, the ABA made salaries go up, but the ABA was full of superstars most of the country didnt see. I only remember Louie Dampier when he played for the Spurs after the merger. He retired the year before the NBA added the 3pt line(the 3pointer started in the NBA in the 79-80 season.)

    • @BBallLore

Yeah it was always weird to me that, despite having just as a rich history as other sports, basketball history isn't talked about as much or even known to it's own fans.

They are a little murky even with the first merger (BAA and NBL merger in 1949) regarding what accolades they respect.

All hail King Louie. Fellow UK alum. I was in medical school at UK during Pitino’s first 3 years. The Laettner shot in the 1992 Elite Eight game was my fourth year of medical school.

It still pisses me off that Pitino didn't have anybody guard Grant Hill on that play.

When he was in his late 40's, Dampier play ball in a church league in Louisville that my friend was in charge. If Louie's feet were set, any shot he took was nothing but net.

He took fewer shots when Issel and Gilmore joined the team (making him the 3rd or 4th option), hence fewer points.

Still, my guy will always be the ultimate team player..and 3 straight MVP..Larry Joe Bird..who never practiced 3 point shots cuz they didn’t come into the NBA until Bird got there..
