I have a concrete ramp like that but one thing that worked good is my House is on a slab so my ramp is shorter and not as steep as yours is. I have forty two inch wide doors and I have a big roll in Shower and bathroom so there is room to turn around and for a Caregiver. They took out two walls and I do not have a hallway and the kitchen is in the middle and the other rooms come off of it and I like that because I do not have to go down a hallway and turn around to get in a doorway because there is no hallway here. And I have an automatic door opener and the wider Doors had to be ordered because they do not make them this wide in a Store.

All quads need these modifications to live a decent life. Many, if not most, quads don't get to have many of these "luxuries" and struggle without them. Glad you have them. You deserve it
I agree, and it's sad that many people are not able to get these modifications. This is partially due to them not knowing about services such as vocational rehabilitation services, which each state has. Thank you for watching and commenting!

That was a very nice comment indeed....but I broke my neck back in 1983 when accessibility wasn't even a thing and although life wasn't exactly easy...I'd not say it was a struggle...you figure out ways to do things...ways around today's ways. In fact quads should know how to do things in event their phone doesn't work...or the lift on their van is broken...or getting in and out of a tub with no roll-in shower...or remotes don't have batteries....it's called plan B.

I have neighbors so close on all sides...only time I feel comfortable just sitting in the driveway zoning out looking at the sky is real late at night. Still peaceful.

Thank you for sharing a look at your home mods, Mason. A lot of thought went into your arrangements; Voc Rehab have been implemental in this regard for me, and it occurs to me that you might have benefitted from VR services, too. Thank goodness such an entity exists and lends support throughout! You next home, can't wait to see your vision and the finished result(s).
You're welcome! I've been acquitted from vocational rehabilitation in regards to my schooling, wheelchair-accessible van, and my Permobil F5 VS power wheelchair. However, VR didn't assist with home modifications because I was unaware of them when modifications were made to my house. My VR case worker was great! I can't wait to get my own fully wheelchair-accessible house. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Yo Mase, good vid. I did the roll in shower gig. They took out my bathtub in order to do it. Then I got a couple of transportable ramps
For
My door entry. It covers a 3 inch lip over the doorway. And I also did dual vanity roll under sinks in the bathroom. The only thing I wish I did (and can still do at some point) is to make my kitchen sink roll under. Because washing dishes can be kind of a pain doing it from the side. It IS a little helpful that I’m 6’3” so I have long arms and torso so it’s not as bad as say if I was shorter.
Yeah, a roll-shower is a must in my opinion. I need transportable ramps for my porch door and garage walk-in door. I definitely want a wheelchair-accessible kitchen, but don't have plans for it at my current house. Doing things from the side is a pain, especially if it takes a while. Wow, we are the same height, so I know the advantages and disadvantages of being 6'3"! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Why do they even still make round door knobs it is such a poor design

I was just talking about this with my pt the other day after a trip to my small towns tag office, which is a very old residential building converted into a commercial space and they still have round door knob, which is not only silly because even some body people for instance, the elderly or those with arthritis would struggle with these type of knobs but unsafe because of fire, for instance, a round knob can only be opened by grasping a hold of the knob, whereas the levers style knobs you could be kicked open or opened with a object instead of physically having to touch

I’m living in an apartment right now in NYC. Really difficult landlord I had to build my own wheelchair ramp and I have very loud rude upstairs neighbors. I can’t wait to get a house someday…. You have a beautiful accessible home 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I thought it was required for landlords to make accommodations. However, from what I found online, some situations require the landlord to build a ramp and other situations require the landlord to allow tenants to build a ramp. "In certain situations, if someone with a disability needs a ramp to be able to use and enjoy their housing, the FHA requires housing providers to install ramps. In others, the FHA requires housing providers to allow a tenant with a disability to install a ramp at the occupant's expense." I hope you are able to get an accessible house soon. Hmmm...my comment isn't here...I must have hit 'Cancel' instead of 'Comment'. I was wondering why no reply from Mason. Anyway, pulls or dummy door knobs on the opposite side of the door are also a good way to close doors. I learned also that pulls are great for pulling yourself around in strategic parts of the house...especially in places where you might jam your knuckles. Also, a drain in the middle going from the front to back (side) of the sink will allow for the pipes to be to the side so you can roll under he sink..and also that'll make it easier to turn the water on and off.

In the hospital they wanted to turn me several times a night, when I came home they very much insisted on that. I sleep on my back all night most nights, of course the odd occasion when I can't. But that was a game changer for me, been able to have a good night sleep. C5 complete 33 years ago. Keep up the great work Mason. Would love to do a live Q&A if you are up for that? We could compare the difference between UK and US and answer questions.
Yeah, that's what they had me do while I was in the hospital and is what I did for a little while after coming home. However, doing so causes less quality sleep. I don't like sleeping on my sides because it's very uncomfortable to my shoulders and neck. Lying flat on your back is the healthiest as far as posture goes because it's a natural position for the body. I am interested in doing a live Q&A. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@masonx54 There's some nice synergy, you are a therapist and I am a meditation coach. Both help people through difficult times. I cannot lie on my side, within 30 minutes it feels like my shoulders are literally broken and I start sweating with AD. I am in the UK, so basically about 10 hours ahead. Turning can be important though...Christopher Reeve died from complications from a bed sore because he refused to let people turn him.
I had to get stiltz elevator to go from main to top floor for my office to work and it goes down stairs for tornadoes.
I also got a pool lift to be able to enjoy pool with my now teenage kids. I did have to redo bathroom for a push in shower and open toilet area, but I don't know why they thought i needed a ramp to get in shower lol only thing I hate. Other than that I have the same door handles as you to open easier. I use the cut out area that's for a desk in kitchen to cook at. Everything else I sit sideways to do (dishes and such) we did add removable ramp for garage to get to my vehicle.
For drawers I use the own handel to put my hands in to open. Seems to help.
I'm a c5/c7 incomplete quadriplegic with a manual wheelchair and e assistant wheels for when needed for big hills or long pushed.

I found ramps are a better idea. Think, what would I do if it broke or there was a power outage...especially if you were in it at the time....

@@masonx54 ramps are a better idea than lifts or elevators. As I said earlier...you need to think of how you'll get around i the event of a power shortage or lack of technology.
@@morgancalvi6675 Yeah, I agree, but am still confused why a ramp is needed for a roll-in shower.
The Easy-bolt system on my chair caused a lot of problems as well because it's so low to the ground for engaging the easy-lock receiver. I wonder why they didn't create a retractable bolt that could move higher for clearance? This would alleviate most of the threshold issues.
How are the new home plans going? It should be far more accessible as opposed to a modified home. I built a new house 8 years ago with open rooms and very wide doors. ❤
I contacted EZ-Lock and was told the position of the bolt was determined by crash tests, so that's why it is the way it is. As for your question about the house plans, I answer it in my Q&A video I recorded today that I will upload this weekend.

hey dude! it seems you are in your permobil f5 corpus vs. i am dreaming/planning to get one but i spent many many hours/days googling how to get ez-lock in it (i have ez-lock in my car and my current old wheelchair) and decided that it is not possible. and now you mentioned that you have ez-lock... really?? can you give some more details, please?
Yes, I have the EZ-Lock setup on my Permobil F5 and Toyota Sienna van. The issue is the bolt for the EZ-Lock on the bottom of the wheelchair is so low that it catches on thresholds. However, I got around that issue by having a metal plate installed in my van to lift the EZ-Lock up to allow my bolt to be higher from the ground.
