I would've just added that I never even heard of "The Kid's in the Hall" to begin with, before RLM mentioned the reboot. Kevin McDonald is just the voice of Pleakly, from "Lilo and Stitch", to me and I didn't even know his name.
@@zanpakutoman4225 I hadn't heard of Kids in the Hall until a few years ago. And at that point, in my mind, Dave Foley was just the voice of Flick from A Bug's Life and Kevin McDonald was the big head guy from Sky High (Dave Foley also had a great role in that movie)
@@NickHarron Oh, yeah! He WAS in Sky High! I knew there were more roles I remembered him in. Honestly, they all seem like they have "That Guy." type of roles. I've probably technically known about them since forever, but they're usually just side or minor characters. It's a shame. Since Jay pointed it out, they all play their types of roles perfectly.
I once say the Kids live at UCLA, and they were hysterical. I told Dave Foley that I had seen High Stakes. He shook his head, and said, “I’m so sorry.”
I remember telling Mark McKinney that I saw Brain Candy in the theater and how much I (mostly) enjoyed it. He said "that was you, thanks kid!" Also had a similar meeting with Paul Thomas Anderson once when I told him that I saw Magnolia twelve times in the theater. But thats a story for another UA-cam comment.

I was a big Kids in the Hall fan. I remember seeing the trailer for this online and being super excited for it, but then I never heard a thing about the movie coming out, until about a year later, I saw it in Blockbuster, and a begged my friends to rent it, which they reluctantly agreed. Everyone hated it, and from that day on, I was never again allowed to pick the movie.
I can’t even begin to describe how happy it makes me that you guys reviewed Brain Candy. Here’s to all the new Kids in the Hall fans that’ll hopefully be hobbling in in droves after seeing this!

Cancer boy sucked. Not because of the dark humor, but because the actor was trying way too hard and decided to inexplicably sound like a hokey robot for laughs. The "marrow is low" joke doesn't even make sense, it's just throwing in the word marrow because cancer. The bit itself might be funny if played by a better actor.
The Siskel & Ebert clip was priceless. I don't think I've ever seen Siskel look so disappointed in Ebert. Siskel couldn't believe that he didn't think the bit was funny. 😂😂😂

my first apartment was this studio spot in Philadelphia and my roommate was severely depressed. We owned this movie on DVD and watched it all the time and were constantly laughing and quoting it. I haven't seen it in almost 20 years but this is a great reminder to give it another go!

I'm really hoping they talk about Dirty Work at some point, it's well worth the Re:View treatment. Even if it isn't perfect (which it isn't), Norm Macdonald's performance is so great, and him and Artie Lange have such incredible chemistry (which isn't surprising, considering how close they were). EDIT: I think that might be a Todd Rundgren album cover that Josh is wearing, just "pop art"-ized. Good taste (as usual).

He always tried to be some guiding force of morals to let people know why something is bad/shouldn't be funny. He also constantly missed the fuckin' point of movies when he would said stupid shit like some scenes in sci-fi movies weren't "realistic." In short, he'd constantly act like he was smarter and a 'better' person than literally anybody else in the world.

Siskel even had to defend Fear and Loathing on the phone while dying in a hospital bed because Ebert called it a terrible movie that will encourage drug use.

Oh wow, the story about Dave Foley being somewhat resented for News Radio suddenly explains the News Radio episode. His character's college a Capella group promised they'd get back together in 5 years and he doesn't want to since he has a successful career at the station...woof.
Fun fact: the group is played by the actors of Mr. Show and one Bob Odenkirk says he stopped being a lawyer to continue the group, foreshadowing Better Call Saul!

The early auditorium scene, filmed in Toronto. When the principal says "what the hell is going on here?!" You see the top of my head running past Frewer's shoulder. Blink and you miss it. UA-cam URL: UlwdPOyd3w0 - At the nine-thirty mark, when dude says "Principal Moss." That is my contribution to contemporary culture. I was (and am) a huge Matt Frewer fan, but it was wise not to approach him. Tommy Chong's son was the big star in the room. Meanwhile, I'm two inches away from the future Hawkeye. Who knew? It was obvious even to idiot younger me that this movie was no one's vision based on this five-minute scene that they took twelve hours to shoot. The entire day on set around other "student extras" was like the customs department in Men In Black. Payroll was hours late coming in, and I was absolutely sure one or more people were going to wind up dead or hospitalized.
It's hard to convey how much I love this movie, and it's also heartbreaking to know about the stuff that went on behind the scenes. If you haven't watched thier documentary called 'Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks' I HIGHLY recommend it. They break down everything that was going on with Brain Candy.

@@tommenno There were a lot of problems with the guys after Dave Foley got hired for Newsradio in 95. Not to mention Scott Thompson having cancer (though if I remember correctly that was closer to one of the tours they did in the early 2000s maybe) etc. And the guys hated making Brain Candy, at least as far as making a "movie" is concerned.
@@tph2010 I vaguely remember when Brain Candy was released and I could be mistaken but I recall it didn't get many bookings in the "big" movie theaters and multiplexes, it kinda got sidelined to the arthouse and one or 2 screen theaters in the city, at least that's what happened here in Atlanta. I don't think Paramount put much marketing into it.
I grew up watching Kids in The Hall. I dig the new season, and always liked the movie haha the original run of seasons still gets a lot of play every year or two at our house. Saw them live a few times and was so much fun. Glad to see this episode!
Interesting about Senior Trip missing its opticals/titles/credits. I've noticed this on at least two movies this past year -- documentaries, where these opticals are very important (like, who's talking?). One was The Celluloid Closet on the Criterion Channel. I contacted them and they acknowledged it, contacted the distributor and had it fixed in a few days (I also saw it on TCM a few weeks later with no opticals... amazing. TCM ignored my feedback). The other was the Automat, the new doc about, well, the Automat, on Kanopy. No opticals. And no credits... just a black screen where the credits were supposed to roll. There seems to be serious lack of quality control lately.
…great testament of the Criterion Channel being responsive though. Anyone can make a dumb mistake but to actually read a comment from a user AND then actually act on it is impressive (though should be the norm).
I still laugh my head off thinking about a movie being presented without its opticals like that, especially with the end parts where the text is supposed to give closure, but what you end up with is these completely inexplicable and now kind of ominous lingering stills. Completely changes the tone of the sequence.

Saw this 3x in the theatre, and watched them perform a live script reading a few years ago. Brain Candy deserves so much more recognition than it receives.
I never watched the Kids in the Hall TV series. I saw Brain Candy when I was working in a theater in college, along with the other employees. I thought it was really good and extremely prescient. I’ve seen it a few times in the intervening years and still think it’s good. I never understood why it didn’t get more exposure.
Growing up outside the US I'd never heard of KITH, but saw Brain Candy randomly on cable one day. Honestly I found it's humour so different and refreshing, I loved it. So wild to see it reviewed 20 years later.
One of the producers at Paramount had a relative who was dying of Cancer and asked the Kids in the Hall to remove Cancer Boy they refused and the film did not get a wide release.
My God I could almost hear Mike internally screaming in the background that not once did they mention that one actress was Ezri Dax on Deep Space Nine. How much you want to bet he practically held Jay at gunpoint to put that card in. lol
Went to see Brain Candy with my parents when it first came out. My dad walked out of the theatre, but I will always love this movie. The DVD is still one of the jewels in my collection.
Something I never noticed about the artwork as a kid, but now sticks out to me as an adult, is that the imprinting on the candy is the format of imprinting on Bayer aspirin. Fuck, i'm old now.
It's been 20 years since I've seen this film, but I've always remembered the taxi driver lamenting his mother's take on life, "Life is short, life is shit and soon we will all be dead". That great wisdom has always stuck with me 😆

My favorite part about Summer vacation as a kid was watching Kids In the Hall reruns on Comedy Central all morning. Brain Candy was a movie I had to be snuck in to see when it was in theaters, and everyone I saw it with absolutely hated it. I felt like I was crazy for loving it as much as I did, but it was such a unique experience. Had no idea about the infighting until that documentary came out.
Kids in the Hall was funny, but I didn't realize HOW funny in the 90's since I was so young... Watching it now I think it's actually gold. The new season is top tier with the rest of it.
I'm glad someone finally looked into this movie on UA-cam, I have owned this movie since it came out and it's one of my favorites. I always show people this movie when I have a chance to anyone who hasn't seen it.
I found kids in the hall on comedy central when I was in like 7th grade and I rewatch the whole series every few years. After all this time my favorite sketches have never changed "night of the cow" and the one where the cops and the crooks are in the diner and they start racing to eat, pay, etc

The hilarious thing is that "National Lampoon's Senior Trip" has always been a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. It's just such a stupid low-end 90s comedy it's fun.
I infected my college dorm with this film back in 1999. We watched in numerous times in our dorm rooms, we set up a couch and TV outside one day near the building entrance and made a whole viewing experience out of it and even when we were just playing Tony Hawk and/ or drinking, we would have it playing in the background on mute. Can. Not. Get. Enough. Of Brain Candy.

Great movie. I'm not even a Kid's in the Hall fan, but this movie is the shit. I rewound the part with the scientist saying "it's a pill, for the world, to give worms, to ex-girlfriends" five times that first time I watched it...So many great lines/ small bits.

Two friends and I must be the only three people who bought the DVD 😂 I love this movie. It's so quotable. My favorite scene might be Mrs. Hurticure's best memory, where her son (Dave Foley) comes to visit at Christmas. "Sorry we haven't visited, Ma, you know how the kids...hate old people." 😅 His family does a single lap around the room and leaves, handing his mom her present. "Oh I wonder what it is!" she says cheerily and the wife throws over her shoulder, "It's a harmonica." Then she shuts the door and sighs, "That was lovely." Seriously there's about 100 hilarious quotes to take from this movie.
I’M the guy that finally made them break even! After my video collection was ruined by my dad’s putting them in a metal shed without my knowledge, I finally bought it on DVD. Shortly thereafter, the new season came out. The first bit in the board room was funny. I quit after the horrors of seeing two of them in full frontal nudity.
Kids in the Hall has always been an acquired taste and Brain Candy is no exception. It's quite funny and mean and dark and an experience all of its own. Worth watching if for no other reason then to see cancer boy.
When I was working a protectionist in ftlauderdale, Scott came into my theater with a date to see I am legend. It was dead so I started it early for him and he talked to me afterward for a little over TWO HOURS about movies, comedy...dating (there's more to that part). I was 19, was living at my friends house, literally sharing a bed with said friend because my girlfriend left me for a good friend of mine and kicked me out. When he camd into my theater, it had been 3 days since my break up and meeting and talking to him turned everything around for me. I actually- for a little bit- didn't want to die. I wish I could tell him how much that meant to me because it maybe even saved my life. I know ppl say that all the time but seriously
I loved this movie since the first viewing and never had any issues with it. I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence, but I get a little bit of UHF vibes from the way it flows as well.
I loved KITH when I was growing up with the old Comedy Central. I got introduced to a lot of things that helped shape I and my sense of humor as an adult. I and my mom would watch it all the time and, it was funny, because the show wasn't really her style of humor. But, we both enjoyed it, together, and laugh. I don't remember this ever coming out, but I know, now, thanks to you all, and, thanks to UA-cam, I'll get a to see it. BRB, gone roaming halls.
I never thought the movie "petered out" because it's always hard for comedy movies to wrap up a story while being funny, and Brain Candy did it as well as any other comedy. Also the climactic sequence has "you don't look good in a yellow hat" and "good coffee marv" which is a phrase I say every time I drink coffee.
That's not even a problem with films. Many sketch comedy groups tend to have insane or flat endings because ending a sketch is hard. If you want an example check out Whitest Kids U Know. So many of theirs just end with insane things to wraps it up. A good example being "Kid Beer".
I remember feeling emotional as a kid when the last episode aired and they were digging a hole to bury themselves as the show,felt that reunion vibe when the newest show addressed that , took me a while to figure out that my fav show had stopped
I’m just now realizing that the basic plot and ending of this film is basically the premise for the game We Happy Few Although that game takes itself more seriously with its story and it’s aesthetically different it’s funny how these two properties do share a things in common
I bought a VHS with National Lampoon’s Senior Trip when I was 13. I never laughed so hard in my life ever again. I watched it on a weekly or monthly basis for several years, probably saw it more than 40 times. Then many years later I bought it on DVD and couldn’t finish it. At least I can say that I never expected Jeremy Renner to get as big as he is now after that movie.
I had the same issue as Jay with my iTunes version of Soldier (1998). The onscreen text is gone during the opening sequence of Todd’s training, but the sound effects that accompanied the text is still there.
I got to see the Kids on Tour when they came to Seattle in 2008 (still have the autographed ticket), it was like seeing Python when they toured in the way they were able to transform their famous characters for a live setting and they held nothing back, super raunchy. Bonus was, before the show my friends and I agreed to meet up at a bar/restaurant across from the venue, and lo behold they actually walked into the bar hours before the show! (all except Scott Thompson) They were all really nice, except what struck me was the way Bruce McCullogh was 'acting?' He came in w/ a woman on each arm, and talked like he knew he was famous, aloof, an air of importance LOL. Fantastic show :) Never got to see Python live, I can definitely see their influence in the Kids' live show.

THE PROBLEM IS THAT THEY WERE NEVER ANYTHING BUT A BAD MONTY PYTHON RIPOFF, AND MONTY PYTHON HAD CEASED TO BE FUNNY LONG BEFORE THEY STARTED RIPPING THEM OFF. HORSES FOR COURSES, OF COURSE, BUT I FOUND THEM TO BE COMPELTELY INTOLERABLE AND UNFUNNY, AND STILL DO.
Oh hell yeah. I can honestly say that I have watched brain candy more times than any other movie. This film is so important to me. I even, I watched it recently after years of not watching it. And it had me in tears, hyperventilating, because I went through some mental illness shit with my mom recently. But my point is I have seen it about 50 times, and it still is hitting me in totally different ways emotionally as I progress through my own life.
I liked Coneheads and both Wayne's World movies. All three were fun. I did not know that Dave Foley tried to stay out of the film, that's crazy. Another notable thing about Senior Trip is it is one of the few live action performances of Tara Strong, one of the most prolific voice actors out there (a lot of DC roles). She plays the stoner who's face you cannot see through half the film. Also, the cigarette burn girl discussed in the video was apparently in it as well (saw her when I was confirming Tara Strong, it had been 27 years since I've seen it).

as a teenager i rented this movie along with some cartoons. i returned the tapes and went back to rent more stuff the next week or whatever, and they had placed this movie alongside the cartoons in the kids section. i did not inform them.
This movie was perfect, even down to the endless quotable lines. It's a shame that their comedy was so underappreciated. Any time I asked classmates in the 90's if they watched the tv show, the answer was usually, "what show?" Just when I think I have a favorite KID, the next one speaks and it changes.
It's one of the most missed movies. It's a Canadian Idiocracy. Society takes a pill that's rushed to market in order to guarantee happiness and they end up getting the worst of it. Lack govt oversight instantly approves of it. Take your Stummies!
6:00 they were ringers from when they had to overhaul the SNL cast etc post-Sandler Clique. two of the guys were hired writers for the show much earlier. McKinney did another fun comedy series but it wasn't sketch - Hatching Matching & Dispatching (was on CBC mid2000s, now on Prime) about a family who operates a business in small town Newfoundland that handles weddings, funerals, midwivery and the local ambulance service. it's fine. worth a look at least.

At one point there was a very bizarre double feature DVD set that included Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy, and the 80s family-ish movie "Back to the Beach" (which is a throwback to the 1960s beach movies starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon) for some reason.
@@publius9350 The odd thing for me is that I actually bought that double feature mainly for Back to the Beach. I already had the stand alone Brain Candy DVD. At the time that I bought the double feature, I think both individual DVDs may have been out of print and going up in price on the after market, but Back to the Beach (which I was looking for at the time - it is a silly, cheesy family movie, but saw it as a kid and so it is sort of a guilty pleasure) definately was and the invidual DVD at the time was going for ridiculous prices. This double feature may have also been out of print at the time (not entirely sure on that), but was going for far less, I assume because of the very random pairing of these two movie that have nothing in common, with one movie on each side of the disc, and having the stand alone DVDs was more ideal. But since I didn't want to pay a ton for it, I went with this. It also gave me a back up copy of Brain Candy, so it could have been worse.

I loved the (short) discussion about A Night At The Roxbury, a film I have seen countless times, usually just before going out with friends. This has caused me to wake up several times with an extremely sore neck. Once, our group went for a beer at a place on an afternoon and the resident DJ who was setting up for the evening spotted us and shouted out angrily "I am NOT going to play Haddaway!". Apparently we had been there a few nights before...

Netflix did the same thing with the movie "Troy" when I watched it. There is a text crawl at the start of the film that when I was streaming the text didn't appear. It was just a shot of a wall with a bit of music for a couple minutes. I didn't understand if the version they got was some kind of work print, or international print meant to put the text in different languages? Who knows?
I love Brain Candy. I've loved it ever since I was a tiny teen. 1996 would mean I was about 16 when I first saw it, and I enjoyed that someone made a comedy about depression and prescription drugs, two things I was dealing with at the time. I think little teen me would have loved the shit out of the workprint.
As a big KitH fan I was so psyched for this movie, then was disappointed when I saw in the theater. Then a year or so later, saw it at home and LOVED it. So much fun and funny.
This is a complete aside to a thing that was already an aside in the video, but that weird missing opticals thing is something I've seen on iTunes before! In the iTunes version of John Wick, all the subtitles for the Russian dialogue are just done as normal bottom of the screen subtitles that you have to enable through the player, even though in the original movie they're done as part of the film with a bunch of animation and colours to add emphasis to particular words and lines. Until now I had no idea it wasn't just that movie, I'm wondering now if they just do that with on-screen text in *every* movie on iTunes .

As a Canadian who was alive in the 90's, it's strange to see the Kids in the Hall looked at as a cult thing. They most definitely weren't / aren't here. Back then, it wasn't SNL that everyone quoted on the playground, it was KITH sketches. They were on the national broadcaster in prime time for 5 years, they toured all the time, etc. They were huge. But then, I also remember seeing Brain Candy opening night in a theatre of 8 other people...
@@ifeeltiredsleepy I think (and I may be remembering wrong) but Fuck was always beeped out on CBC. There's a line in the book (One Dumb Guy) where they mention how glad they were that they had uncensored versions of the tapes to put on DVD etc.
It's well-known enough in Canada that most people recognize the guys or the name of the show without ever having seen it. But most Canadians have seen it, especially if you were around in the 90s.
I knew Mike could never let the Star Trek trivia go unmentioned but I'm deeply disappointed that he and Rich didn't bust through the wall Kool-Aid Man style screaming "EZRI DAX! NICOLE DE BOER PLAYED EZRI DAX ON STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE!!!" "OH MY GAAAAAAAAWD!!!"
I actually think the original ending is a BIT too dark. Jay makes a strong point for why it's better, but it just veers a bit too cynical for my taste. The original ending does definitely feel rushed, but I think I just have a lame sense of humor. Miguel floating away on the balloons always made me laugh. Also, amazing Matthew Sweet track in the credits.
It appealed to me as a 14 year old in a peculiar way and would watch every Friday night with my old man. Those are fond memories for sure. What a show.
Hahahaha, fucking hell. I was using "Hurdicure" as a weird name for throwaway characters for ages and I was like "I know I'm ripping this name off from something, but what?" I can't believe it was fucking Brain Candy! That's great! But yeah, my friends and I were rabid fans of the Kids in the Hall so when Brain Candy came out we lost our shit. I don't think it was showing in a theater anywhere near us, but we got the VHS and watched the fuck out of it. As a bartender who has worked in night clubs I can definitely say a night at the Roxbury is a great representation of the hopeless nightclubers who so desperately want to seem cool and slick but come off desperate and always go home alone. Great film
I remember going to the theater with my buddy and the box office person almost didn’t sell us a ticket. We were about 16 but had seen plenty of rated R movies prior (such as Natural Born Killers and Primal Fear), Luckily some other older folk vouched for us as if they were our guardians. Would have a similar experience a couple of months later when Striptease came out.
I often feel old on the Internet, being 33 and online 22 years or so. Not so while watching RLM. The TVLand of VHS. Now to watch 37 minutes of a review for a movie I will almost certainly never see.

I've probably technically known about them since forever, but they're usually just side or minor characters. It's a shame. Since Jay pointed it out, they all play their types of roles perfectly.

I remember telling Mark McKinney that I saw Brain Candy in the theater and how much I (mostly) enjoyed it. He said "that was you, thanks kid!" Also had a similar meeting with Paul Thomas Anderson once when I told him that I saw Magnolia twelve times in the theater. But thats a story for another UA-cam comment.

I was a big Kids in the Hall fan. I remember seeing the trailer for this online and being super excited for it, but then I never heard a thing about the movie coming out, until about a year later, I saw it in Blockbuster, and a begged my friends to rent it, which they reluctantly agreed. Everyone hated it, and from that day on, I was never again allowed to pick the movie.
Still worth it though.

Cancer boy sucked. Not because of the dark humor, but because the actor was trying way too hard and decided to inexplicably sound like a hokey robot for laughs. The "marrow is low" joke doesn't even make sense, it's just throwing in the word marrow because cancer. The bit itself might be funny if played by a better actor.

my first apartment was this studio spot in Philadelphia and my roommate was severely depressed. We owned this movie on DVD and watched it all the time and were constantly laughing and quoting it. I haven't seen it in almost 20 years but this is a great reminder to give it another go!

I always love seeing Roger Ebert step up to white knight when its not needed. Its like a re:view tradition at this point.
He always tried to be some guiding force of morals to let people know why something is bad/shouldn't be funny. He also constantly missed the fuckin' point of movies when he would said stupid shit like some scenes in sci-fi movies weren't "realistic." In short, he'd constantly act like he was smarter and a 'better' person than literally anybody else in the world.

I was (and am) a huge Matt Frewer fan, but it was wise not to approach him. Tommy Chong's son was the big star in the room. Meanwhile, I'm two inches away from the future Hawkeye. Who knew?
It was obvious even to idiot younger me that this movie was no one's vision based on this five-minute scene that they took twelve hours to shoot.
The entire day on set around other "student extras" was like the customs department in Men In Black. Payroll was hours late coming in, and I was absolutely sure one or more people were going to wind up dead or hospitalized.

It's hard to convey how much I love this movie, and it's also heartbreaking to know about the stuff that went on behind the scenes. If you haven't watched thier documentary called 'Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks' I HIGHLY recommend it. They break down everything that was going on with Brain Candy.

Not to mention Scott Thompson having cancer (though if I remember correctly that was closer to one of the tours they did in the early 2000s maybe) etc. And the guys hated making Brain Candy, at least as far as making a "movie" is concerned.
@@tph2010 I vaguely remember when Brain Candy was released and I could be mistaken but I recall it didn't get many bookings in the "big" movie theaters and multiplexes, it kinda got sidelined to the arthouse and one or 2 screen theaters in the city, at least that's what happened here in Atlanta. I don't think Paramount put much marketing into it.
I grew up watching Kids in The Hall. I dig the new season, and always liked the movie haha the original run of seasons still gets a lot of play every year or two at our house. Saw them live a few times and was so much fun. Glad to see this episode!

Interesting about Senior Trip missing its opticals/titles/credits. I've noticed this on at least two movies this past year -- documentaries, where these opticals are very important (like, who's talking?). One was The Celluloid Closet on the Criterion Channel. I contacted them and they acknowledged it, contacted the distributor and had it fixed in a few days (I also saw it on TCM a few weeks later with no opticals... amazing. TCM ignored my feedback). The other was the Automat, the new doc about, well, the Automat, on Kanopy. No opticals. And no credits... just a black screen where the credits were supposed to roll. There seems to be serious lack of quality control lately.

I still laugh my head off thinking about a movie being presented without its opticals like that, especially with the end parts where the text is supposed to give closure, but what you end up with is these completely inexplicable and now kind of ominous lingering stills. Completely changes the tone of the sequence.
I still think “Girl Drink Drunk” is among the pantheon of the finest comedy sketches ever.

I never watched the Kids in the Hall TV series. I saw Brain Candy when I was working in a theater in college, along with the other employees. I thought it was really good and extremely prescient. I’ve seen it a few times in the intervening years and still think it’s good. I never understood why it didn’t get more exposure.
Hope you checked out the show at some point, it's some Grade A sketch comedy, up there with Monty Python and The Whitest Kids U Know
Growing up outside the US I'd never heard of KITH, but saw Brain Candy randomly on cable one day. Honestly I found it's humour so different and refreshing, I loved it. So wild to see it reviewed 20 years later.
One of the producers at Paramount had a relative who was dying of Cancer and asked the Kids in the Hall to remove Cancer Boy they refused and the film did not get a wide release.
My God I could almost hear Mike internally screaming in the background that not once did they mention that one actress was Ezri Dax on Deep Space Nine.

Went to see Brain Candy with my parents when it first came out. My dad walked out of the theatre, but I will always love this movie. The DVD is still one of the jewels in my collection.

My favorite part about Summer vacation as a kid was watching Kids In the Hall reruns on Comedy Central all morning. Brain Candy was a movie I had to be snuck in to see when it was in theaters, and everyone I saw it with absolutely hated it. I felt like I was crazy for loving it as much as I did, but it was such a unique experience. Had no idea about the infighting until that documentary came out.
I feel lucky everyone I knew at that time loved it.
Kids In The Hall was fantastic, the pear sketch was one of the funniest things I had ever seen as a little kid.

I found kids in the hall on comedy central when I was in like 7th grade and I rewatch the whole series every few years. After all this time my favorite sketches have never changed "night of the cow" and the one where the cops and the crooks are in the diner and they start racing to eat, pay, etc

The hilarious thing is that "National Lampoon's Senior Trip" has always been a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. It's just such a stupid low-end 90s comedy it's fun.
I infected my college dorm with this film back in 1999. We watched in numerous times in our dorm rooms, we set up a couch and TV outside one day near the building entrance and made a whole viewing experience out of it and even when we were just playing Tony Hawk and/ or drinking, we would have it playing in the background on mute. Two friends and I must be the only three people who bought the DVD 😂 I love this movie. It's so quotable. My favorite scene might be Mrs. Hurticure's best memory, where her son (Dave Foley) comes to visit at Christmas. "Sorry we haven't visited, Ma, you know how the kids...hate old people." 😅 His family does a single lap around the room and leaves, handing his mom her present. "Oh I wonder what it is!" she says cheerily and the wife throws over her shoulder, "It's a harmonica."
Then she shuts the door and sighs, "That was lovely."

When I was working a protectionist in ftlauderdale, Scott came into my theater with a date to see I am legend. It was dead so I started it early for him and he talked to me afterward for a little over TWO HOURS about movies, comedy...dating (there's more to that part). I was 19, was living at my friends house, literally sharing a bed with said friend because my girlfriend left me for a good friend of mine and kicked me out. When he camd into my theater, it had been 3 days since my break up and meeting and talking to him turned everything around for me. I actually- for a little bit- didn't want to die. I wish I could tell him how much that meant to me because it maybe even saved my life. I know ppl say that all the time but seriously
I loved this movie since the first viewing and never had any issues with it. I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence, but I get a little bit of UHF vibes from the way it flows as well.
I loved KITH when I was growing up with the old Comedy Central. I got introduced to a lot of things that helped shape I and my sense of humor as an adult.
I and my mom would watch it all the time and, it was funny, because the show wasn't really her style of humor. But, we both enjoyed it, together, and laugh.
I don't remember this ever coming out, but I know, now, thanks to you all, and, thanks to UA-cam, I'll get a to see it.

I never thought the movie "petered out" because it's always hard for comedy movies to wrap up a story while being funny, and Brain Candy did it as well as any other comedy. Also the climactic sequence has "you don't look good in a yellow hat" and "good coffee marv" which is a phrase I say every time I drink coffee.
3rd act is weaker compared to the first two, but still good.
Unpopular opinion: Zoolander and that Val Kilmer comedy he did at the very beginning of his career manage to keep up the pace.
I thought the ending was fine. I think the movie was a masterpiece, in the top 10 comedies of all time.

That's not even a problem with films. Many sketch comedy groups tend to have insane or flat endings because ending a sketch is hard. If you want an example check out Whitest Kids U Know. So many of theirs just end with insane things to wraps it up. A good example being "Kid Beer".

I bought a VHS with National Lampoon’s Senior Trip when I was 13. I never laughed so hard in my life ever again. I watched it on a weekly or monthly basis for several years, probably saw it more than 40 times. Then many years later I bought it on DVD and couldn’t finish it.
At least I can say that I never expected Jeremy Renner to get as big as he is now after that movie.
I had the same issue as Jay with my iTunes version of Soldier (1998). The onscreen text is gone during the opening sequence of Todd’s training, but the sound effects that accompanied the text is still there.
I got to see the Kids on Tour when they came to Seattle in 2008 (still have the autographed ticket), it was like seeing Python when they toured in the way they were able to transform their famous characters for a live setting and they held nothing back, super raunchy. Bonus was, before the show my friends and I agreed to meet up at a bar/restaurant across from the venue, and lo behold they actually walked into the bar hours before the show! (all except Scott Thompson)
They were all really nice, except what struck me was the way Bruce McCullogh was 'acting?' He came in w/ a woman on each arm, and talked like he knew he was famous, aloof, an air of importance LOL. Fantastic show :)

Oh hell yeah. I can honestly say that I have watched brain candy more times than any other movie. This film is so important to me. I even, I watched it recently after years of not watching it. And it had me in tears, hyperventilating, because I went through some mental illness shit with my mom recently. But my point is I have seen it about 50 times, and it still is hitting me in totally different ways emotionally as I progress through my own life.
I liked Coneheads and both Wayne's World movies. All three were fun.
I did not know that Dave Foley tried to stay out of the film, that's crazy.
Another notable thing about Senior Trip is it is one of the few live action performances of Tara Strong, one of the most prolific voice actors out there (a lot of DC roles). She plays the stoner who's face you cannot see through half the film. Also, the cigarette burn girl discussed in the video was apparently in it as well (saw her when I was confirming Tara Strong, it had been 27 years since I've seen it).

as a teenager i rented this movie along with some cartoons. i returned the tapes and went back to rent more stuff the next week or whatever, and they had placed this movie alongside the cartoons in the kids section. i did not inform them.

This movie was perfect, even down to the endless quotable lines. It's a shame that their comedy was so underappreciated. Any time I asked classmates in the 90's if they watched the tv show, the answer was usually, "what show?" Just when I think I have a favorite KID, the next one speaks and it changes.
It's one of the most missed movies. It's a Canadian Idiocracy. Society takes a pill that's rushed to market in order to guarantee happiness and they end up getting the worst of it. Lack govt oversight instantly approves of it.

6:00 they were ringers from when they had to overhaul the SNL cast etc post-Sandler Clique. two of the guys were hired writers for the show much earlier. McKinney did another fun comedy series but it wasn't sketch - Hatching Matching & Dispatching (was on CBC mid2000s, now on Prime) about a family who operates a business in small town Newfoundland that handles weddings, funerals, midwivery and the local ambulance service. it's fine. worth a look at least.

Brain candy is amazing! Me and my roommates in college used to watch it all the time... (Mid-90s). Even these days, I rewatch it every couple years or so.

At one point there was a very bizarre double feature DVD set that included Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy, and the 80s family-ish movie "Back to the Beach" (which is a throwback to the 1960s beach movies starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon) for some reason.
Well they both had that overly-lengthy Fishbone musical number in the middle.
That is the copy of brain candy I own. One side has brain candy. The other side has the words "brain candy" in permanent marker.

I already had the stand alone Brain Candy DVD. At the time that I bought the double feature, I think both individual DVDs may have been out of print and going up in price on the after market, but Back to the Beach (which I was looking for at the time - it is a silly, cheesy family movie, but saw it as a kid and so it is sort of a guilty pleasure) definately was and the invidual DVD at the time was going for ridiculous prices.
This double feature may have also been out of print at the time (not entirely sure on that), but was going for far less, I assume because of the very random pairing of these two movie that have nothing in common, with one movie on each side of the disc, and having the stand alone DVDs was more ideal. But since I didn't want to pay a ton for it, I went with this. It also gave me a back up copy of Brain Candy, so it could have been worse.

I loved the (short) discussion about A Night At The Roxbury, a film I have seen countless times, usually just before going out with friends. This has caused me to wake up several times with an extremely sore neck. Once, our group went for a beer at a place on an afternoon and the resident DJ who was setting up for the evening spotted us and shouted out angrily "I am NOT going to play Haddaway!". Apparently we had been there a few nights before...
I love this movie, and I'm happy to see it get the attention it so richly deserves

I never thought anyone would talk about this movie ever again, lol. I saw it when it came out, I liked it, but not enough to really remember it.
Netflix did the same thing with the movie "Troy" when I watched it. There is a text crawl at the start of the film that when I was streaming the text didn't appear. It was just a shot of a wall with a bit of music for a couple minutes. I didn't understand if the version they got was some kind of work print, or international print meant to put the text in different languages? Who knows?

I love Brain Candy. I've loved it ever since I was a tiny teen. 1996 would mean I was about 16 when I first saw it, and I enjoyed that someone made a comedy about depression and prescription drugs, two things I was dealing with at the time. I think little teen me would have loved the shit out of the workprint.
As a big KitH fan I was so psyched for this movie, then was disappointed when I saw in the theater. Then a year or so later, saw it at home and LOVED it. So much fun and funny.

This is a complete aside to a thing that was already an aside in the video, but that weird missing opticals thing is something I've seen on iTunes before! In the iTunes version of John Wick, all the subtitles for the Russian dialogue are just done as normal bottom of the screen subtitles that you have to enable through the player, even though in the original movie they're done as part of the film with a bunch of animation and colours to add emphasis to particular words and lines. Until now I had no idea it wasn't just that movie, I'm wondering now if they just do that with on-screen text in *every* movie on iTunes .
It's every movie. In 'Stargate' they remove the translations of what the aliens are saying for example.

I actually found the "She's sad! She's sad!" ending to be pretty funny
It was objectively hilarious. It's like in Starship Troopers when they declare that the brain bug is afraid with unbridled demented glee.
As much as I enjoyed the whole movie, no scene broke me like her crying as her grandson floated away.

As a Canadian who was alive in the 90's, it's strange to see the Kids in the Hall looked at as a cult thing. They most definitely weren't / aren't here. Back then, it wasn't SNL that everyone quoted on the playground, it was KITH sketches. They were on the national broadcaster in prime time for 5 years, they toured all the time, etc. They were huge.
But then, I also remember seeing Brain Candy opening night in a theatre of 8 other people...
We consider the entire nation of Canada to be a bit of a cult classic.
One of the things that always blows my mind when watching old KITH is that you could say f****t and fuck on the CBC at 9 pm uncensored.

There's a line in the book (One Dumb Guy) where they mention how glad they were that they had uncensored versions of the tapes to put on DVD etc.

I knew Mike could never let the Star Trek trivia go unmentioned but I'm deeply disappointed that he and Rich didn't bust through the wall Kool-Aid Man style screaming "EZRI DAX! NICOLE DE BOER PLAYED EZRI DAX ON STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE!!!" "OH MY GAAAAAAAAWD!!!"
I actually think the original ending is a BIT too dark. Jay makes a strong point for why it's better, but it just veers a bit too cynical for my taste. The original ending does definitely feel rushed, but I think I just have a lame sense of humor. Miguel floating away on the balloons always made me laugh. Also, amazing Matthew Sweet track in the credits.

Hahahaha, fucking hell. I was using "Hurdicure" as a weird name for throwaway characters for ages and I was like "I know I'm ripping this name off from something, but what?" I can't believe it was fucking Brain Candy! That's great!
But yeah, my friends and I were rabid fans of the Kids in the Hall so when Brain Candy came out we lost our shit. I don't think it was showing in a theater anywhere near us, but we got the VHS and watched the fuck out of it. Such that, much like the whole "Hurdicure" jawn I'd be quoting lines from it and whatnot for years, long after I'd forgotten the movie.
As a bartender who has worked in night clubs I can definitely say a night at the Roxbury is a great representation of the hopeless nightclubers who so desperately want to seem cool and slick but come off desperate and always go home alone. Great film
that "Toast fucking" clip in contrast with the Halloween cop dialogue about what their having for lunch is an amazing thought to me.
I remember going to the theater with my buddy and the box office person almost didn’t sell us a ticket. We were about 16 but had seen plenty of rated R movies prior (such as Natural Born Killers and Primal
Fear), Luckily some other older folk vouched for us as if they were our guardians. Would have a similar experience a couple of months later when Striptease came out.
Striptease was a terrible movie, but I can still remember the night I saw it like it was yesterday for some reason. I was horribly drunk.
