  • In this episode of The Totally Awesome Fishing Show turns its spotlight onto another "old school" beach setup. Presenter Graeme Pullen highlights "The Wessex Rig", how to tie them up, and how they were used years ago to target both large and small fish. They can be used shore fishing, from a pier or jetty, or even LRF (Light Rock Fishing). You don't need to be a long distance casting expert, as the wessex rig is ideal for begginers to shore fishing as they cast well using fixed spool reels. Experienced and young anglers alike may be interested in giving the wessex rig a try, as this is another great tip from the totally awesome crew that should help you locate the fish. Filmed at Hayling Island in Hampshire, its another episode of tips and entertainment in the hugely popular stockpile of "AWESOME FISHING FILMS!!"

    I used to go fishing with my dad from about 10years old to 17years. He used to show me what to do (knots etc). We were never very sucessful but I loved it. Now he's given me his rods due to him having arthritis in his thumbs and due to go beach fishing this sunday night. Your videos for beginners have been very useful in helping me remember the things my dad taught me and more tips that he didn't! Very informative and FUN at the same time. Great stuff. Thanks!

    Glad to hear the Wessex rig worked, and a double hit of bass on the one rig is something. I was through Wexford last week, just making five brand new rock fishing films.Should be up in next week or so,keep watching, and spread the word to others who don't know about all our films. Send us a photo next time you are out.

      TAFishing Wessex is my favourite rig, in June I caught a dogfish on the top hook and a decent smalleyed ray on bottom at same time at Cogden beach in Dorset.

    I had no luck this weekend. Only two bites through three consecutive tides and no hook ups at all. What a fantastic weekend. A short wade out to rocks and into clear deep water. Nobody else around. Improved on knots and improved on casting distance. Getting closer to that first kingfish. Greetings and salutations from Auckland NZ

    The reason I asked that was the "guides" on the rod your using on this video are guides typically used on a rod that is used with a casting or multiplier reel. Spinning reels are typically used on rods that have spinning or larger guides to accomadate the line coming off the spool. Casting rod guides restrict the line coming off a spinning reel. Casting rods do come in different lengths, they are just made for a specific reel. Your videos are very good. Thank you.

    Tried this rig out a today, Ballyhealy beach, down south Wexford. My m8s First cast of the day... 2 Bass one each hook, both about 3 lb, on a rising tide. Not a sniff of a bass after that but plenty of flounders. works great cheers guys.

    A really good spot is over at Eastney beach on the other side, by the tenth hole golf course. I went there yesterday, from 8-12 PM and used single lugworm on a two hook flapper with 3/0 hooks and caught 9 bass. Really good spot.

    My brother my heart goes out to you fishing those fished out waters low in fish stock. I know exactly how you feel... I live and fish in Turkey and the shore fishing is terrible and totally fished out.. so when I see you with your unbelievable enthusiasm and love of the sport fishing in such fished out waters I feel as though I am looking in the mirror. I am originally from one of the greatest shore fishing spots on the planet earth "Long Island New York" and I regularly fished the legendary spots there such as Montauk and the various famous inlets and beaches of the south and north shore of long island. And after the great fishing there for me to be stuck here in Turkey in these beautiful waters with absolutely no fish it feels like spiritual torture. I even made the major decision to relocate back to the USA because I couldn't live in fishless waters any longer. So God willing I will relocate back to the USA fall of 2016 and set up my home in Montauk long Island or possibly on Cape Cod.. When I do I would be delighted to have you and your son as my guest to experience the kind of shore fishing that dreams are made of. We get shore blitzes of Acres and Acres on Bass that average 15 pounds each with some 30's and forties thrown in.. plus 20 lb rod breaking Blue fish and a variety of species for sport and some for the table. Lets keep in touch once I get settled in would love to have you stop by and spend a week or two fishing in "legendary waters with large fish".... Seeing you in your videos with your wonderful enthusiasm and love of the sport and then seeing the fished out waters that you fish touch my heart because I am basically in the same boat. We also share another aspect of "Awesomeness" I am a Electric Guitarist singer by trade and all my English fans who could not pronounce my Turkish name named me "Awesome John" so we seem to be kindred spirits my fishing brother. I hope to share a tide with you and your son some day in the USA landing some serious large fin the future. God willing.. stay well and keep in touch. warmest regards Awesome John

      +awesomejohnnet thanks for taking the trouble to write.Can you play "Freebird" ?? Might even get over there as a 20lb Stripey would make some great footage.Keep watching .Hopefully more guitar soundtracks to come. I really wish you took people out on beach fishing training courses - a small group of enthusiastic novices who are desperate to start catching but just don't seem to know enough.
    I'm in that situation, down at Hurst Spit every weekend and in the many many hours I've been fishing I've only foul-hooked a 6" mackerel!
    Oh well, your videos are tremendous help anyway (thank you!), so I'll keep plugging away, and hope that the new beach gear I bought today can help improve things a tad.

    Wessx rig . 6/0- 3/0 pennel on the running ledger with big squid , mackerel or cocktail bait . Big worm bait on the 3/0 top snood . Can be deadly for that big bass 20 -30 yards out in fast running low surf .

  • @TAFishing
    @TAFishing  12 років тому

    Can't see how as I don't know how bad the rocks are. But the specialists use a "Pulley Rig" to get the lead up off the bottom quickly when fishing rough ground. We have in an upcoming film on bass fishing over rough ground.Should be up in a couple of weeks and that might help you.

  • @TAFishing
    @TAFishing  11 років тому

    I see what you mean now.Yes, when I saw them it also seemed the principle of large butt guide had been altered. But apparently these long rods can be used for fixed spools, you need to contact Tony Kirrage at his shop and he should explain the principle of those smaller guides. They certainly cast a long way for sure.

  • @TAFishing

    I only know a baitcasting rod as 6 feet long, one piece, with a curved hook above the winch fitting where you hook your finger to make the cast, and have a multiplier reel on .Don't think I've ever made a film with a baitcaster rod yet ? These don't really feel great with a fixed spool. On 12-foot beach rods that we use, either multiplier or fixed spool can be used. A baitcaster is too short for beach fishing.

    have you used braid sliders (they work on mono too) they are pretty cheap off the web, we use them catfishing so we can click new weights on and off without cutting and re rigging. works well tell braid cuts through the plastic slide or tangles around it.

  • @TAFishing
    @TAFishing  11 років тому

    If you have Ragworm over there it should be Bass/Flounder(Fluke) and maybe small Red Drum. I don't think specs(trout)and bluefish would take them, they want fish as they are more predatory.

    Do you mean the wessex rig ? (very cheap),or all the rods and reels ? Or our camera equipment ? If its the rods/reels I have no idea they are 30 years old.But your local tackle shop should give you an idea of beach outfit costs. The wessex rig is just swivel,2 hooks,2 beads and a bit of nylon.

    Would 12 foot rods with 1.25 pound test curve work for surf fishing like this, or would i need something stronger?
    I was thinking of using the 12 foot carp rods for surf fishing and put a different reel on them with stronger line than 6 pound test. maybe 12 pound or more.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  10 років тому

      They would be ok for the lighter leads.2/3lb test curve carp rods,15lb line(use a shock leader) and big carp reels are all basically what we use for bass fishing,so should do the job and save investing in shore tackle. Try it first.

      I've been using Google maps to identify ideal places within reasonable driving distance. Land and car based, I look for places I can get into deeper water and channels, put markers on each spot then try them through different tides wind conditions and moon phases both day and night. After awhile you get an idea of where to go based on the weather and how much pressure the given area is under at the time. I don't really appreciate competition so if a pier or a rocky point is chocka I will move around the corner
