  • This was a pretty simple restoration, but there's just something about these antique tools! The way the brass contrasts against the dark wood... these old tools are absolutely gorgeous, and they definitely don't make them like they used to! If it's not precisely "square", then you just have a wall hanger rather than a restoration. Many of the old tools like the square, plane handles, hand drill handles were finished with shellac. If so, apply some denatured alcohol and the shellac will dissolve, then you won't have to sand much wood away. If you got lucky and it's dead square, nice work.

This is not true. Squares, including ones of this style can be squared.

You can always resquare a square. Big metal ones can be squared with a punch. Ones like this one can be squared with a file. There's a lot of videos online about how to repair a square that isnt square

Enjoyed it. Thought maybe you were going to work some liquid metal into the pits and dramatically recover its lost look, but that would have been quite a project. Thank you as usual for the entertainment and education! Cheers.

Would like to have seen a bit more time polishing the metal to a mirror finish and the metal edges ground square on a flat stone before reassembly, but a nice job.

I wanted to see you flip the square over and draw a line next to one of the first ones using the other side. In that way, you test to see if it's at 90degrees still.

Quick and easy nice job, looks great! if you decide to do another one you might want to think about using gun blue on the polished steel as back in the day most of the Stanley tools that had flat work were blued

I lean toward using Simple Green to clean old wood. Use a Scotch Brite pad. Dry. Wipe down several times with boiled linseed oil.
Small meta parts can be cleaned in a glass jar. Put a bolt thru the lid so you can chuck it in a drill. Fill it 1/2 full with sand. Add small metal parts, chuck in drill, let'er run an hour or so.

Wow, that turned out nice. I'm glad you were able to save the wooden part. Thanks for another great video.

You brought back nightmares of my first job, where I had to polish the brass on a weekly basis. 😄 Nice resto.

Very nice restore, the only thing I didn’t like is using the epoxy, what happens when it’s restored in another 75 years, those brass parts won’t come out.

Thanks for the video. I have this exact antique carpenter's square from my grandfather. I may have my husband buff the blade but not sure that I would take it apart and definitely not epoxy the brass. He carved his initials on the handle, so it's special to me.

I have a craftsman carpenter/ framing square similar to this however its 18” long on the blade and the wood part is around 9.5 inches. Their is a brass cover and pins but its a different shape and I can’t find anything similar to it on google lens or any other search method. Does anyone know how to tell how old it is or how much it might be worth restored?

A short and simple restoration. Too bad about the pitting in the metal. But it did polish up nicely. The polished brass gives it a nice antique touch. Nicely done as always.

Fuck me! there are some nitpickers out there. You should have done this, you didn’t do that. If you had followed all the advice given by the “experts” you would have just thrown it away and bought a new one, which of course, defeats the purpose. From what you started with you got a great result that I would be happy to own. Keep up the great work. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺.
