Loved it. Skills far beyond most todays craftsmen that includes the lighting, sound, sense of place, the cat, and i would bet that is a single malt whisky. Well done i doff me cap to you. Particularly like the natural sounds, and no music. Thankyou for your patience, best regards, g
thank you very much Louis, nice to hear this and nice to see you here. Actually I don't remember that night's whisky brand but today's is Famous Grouse-smoky black and I liked that much 👌🏻 Cheers my dear friend 🥃
Eine schöne Restaurierung des Stechbeitels und alles in ruhe, ohne laute und störende Musik, oder minutenlange Erklärungen. Ich bin selbst Schreiner und habe dein Video genossen. Vielen Dank.
O.H. it's good to see you back I the full length movies again.. That chisel turned out beautiful.. I don't think I've ever seen a repair done quite like that before.. but it came out beautiful as all your restorations do.. Well I hope to see you again in the near future.. You take care my friend and God Bless you and your family...
@@byOldHand Thanks, Mate - I will! I can't tell you how much I enjoyed that video. Just three ckeeky questions, however. First, I noticed you went for a hollow-ground finish on your chisel: in you experience, does that give a finer paring cut than a flat-ground one? Second, is there any chance - at some time in the future - of your giving us some of the 'ingredients' in your 'recipe' - like a UA-cam cook? It'd be REALLY useful for us restoration beginners to know (eg) what type of lapping paste you use, wheel and paper grits-sizes, adhesive (I assume two-part epoxy - to which I am VERY allergic, alas) etc? Last, what was that bluish oilstone (?) you used after your 1000 diamond stone? I was really impressed how _gentle_ you were in achieving such a marvelously sharp edge! Love to your beautiful cats, too❤!
@@marvinc9994 If I am not going to hit the chisel with a mallet, I prefer concave sharpening. Definitely the sharpness and sharpening ability are higher. I will also shoot a real-time sharpening video very soon. I hope it helps. I wish you a wonderful week.
As a cat person, I really enjoy your shop helpers. I appreciate you not using some annoying music in your wonderfully crafted videos. The sounds of tools in the hands of the Master are the sweetest music to one’s ear. Your videos rise to the level of ASMR, for which I thank you.
Outstanding! And, boy, do I feel the pain in your hands from squaring up, sharpening and flattening that iron. Been there many times. Great cinematography.
Just lovely work. I have recently inherited a case full of my father's excellent quality chisels and gouges, plus a radius plane with interchangeable blades that he made himself as an apprentice industrial pattern maker in England in the early 1940's. He never touched them after he retired at sixty-five, and he was ninety-seven when he died so they have seen many years of neglect. I only hope that I can do half as good a job of restoring them to working condition as you have managed to do with this piece. You have my sincere admiration.
I have the exact same chisel , I’ve had it for 42 years now and the quantity of steel is amazing, also the balance of the chisel is just right in your hand , it was passed to me by my father and I cherish it just like you do here . As usual you have done a fantastic restoration and brilliant filming , can’t wait for next project my friend. Take care 😊
My dear Old Hand, what a wonderful rescue of a hard worked old chisel from my own homeland. I have several Marples chisels from my cabinet maker’s apprenticeship in the mid 80’s but they are all polycarbonate (please don't judge me) and being a young man I had no interest in old fashioned tools despite being told how much better the steel was, but I now understand that a young mans ignorance is an old mans regret… I love the passion and respect that you show all of these older items and the fact that you will only ever replace that which cannot be saved. May I be rude and ask what the lovely looking amber liquid in the small glass was? As always thank you so much for the video and allowing us to share your workshop time with you, best regards from Glasgow Scotland
@@byOldHand Thank you for taking the time to reply, My apologies I did not mean the Methylated Spirit I meant the small glass (perhaps of a different alcohol) that you yourself were enjoying in the video.
I'm sorry, I didn't pay attention to the amber word. That's the linseed oil I use. My special mix. It also contains some spices. for this reason, it looks a bit viscous and amber.
I especially liked how the "cap" that you made joins the rest of the handle in such a way that the joint becomes part of the decorative carving instead of being unsightly.
I love the total process you use to make old things "new" again and you do it without taking any of the character of the piece away. There are few restorers that I care to watch simply because the process matters as does the age of the piece they take on. I am always so happy to see you post something unique and it's always a pleasure to see your beautiful cats. Until the next one...stay safe and thank you for sharing!
Finally someone who understands restoration means restoring and not replacing.
