What a beautiful C64! It produces a picture that’s so much better on a CRT monitor than mine did on a 9-inch Texas Instruments monitor back in 1983! Right now, I use my TheC64 Mini with an HDMI monitor to get my “Jumpman”, “Zaxxon” and “Choplifter” fix. After my home renovation, I’ll break out the NTSC C64 (I had a PAL one in Germany) and my original 1982 NTSC VIC-20 and REALLY dig into those and try to get them working. Just? Because! Thanks for what you do for the retro community. Commodore 64 was the most important computer in my life. It started my career in engineering. I can't wait to make an Evo, commodore 64!
I did see the Korgs @22:59 but a couple of tiny rectangular holes in the casing and fitting perspex light pipes would show off the Nu-Tubes at their best. IBasso did it well with their DX9 amplifier module using a small sheet of glass.
In 1989, I was in college learning electronics. Everyone in the class got a TRS-80 color computer kit to assemble and keep. I don't mean to brag (much) but I was the first person to get their kit assembled. Not only that, mine was the only one that worked. My instructor asked if the school could keep it for classes since it was the only one that worked.
I wished someone with make a modern equivalent of an Amstrad CPC 464 or 6128. JustCPC didn't seem to go into production, and MiStEr FPGA is just ridiculously priced. The Amstrad is my childhood machine. But because of your love for the Commodore, its helping push modern equivalents to be released - and many people are now able to enjoy their childhood machines and reliving their youth! I never had a Commodore, but that new board is still a thing of beauty! Love the channel!
As Arnold would say, "ignore the naysayers". But seriously Perifractic and all of the Perifractic family, you are to be highly commended for your enthusiasm and tireless efforts to keeping the spirit of the Commodore 64 and retro computing alive in such a fun, informative and contemporary way! Wow, amazing build, very cool to see the C64 live again 😄 Only thing is the backlite on the keyboard needs to be a little more even, but besides that, epic video 😉😀
Recently got back to gaming on the Commodore 64 loving it more so than next gen gaming due to watching your channel thank you is all ima can say Commodore 64 gaming has been missing from my life for way to long...
Excellent production quality, I’m very impressed. The camera work, the colouring, the effects, the studio, the editing, the sound, the presentation… and even the dog :-). 10/10, would watch again.
I absolute love the fact you have put together a completely new c64 all the great people in the retro community that have developed new parts to allow us to continue using our retro machines or completely build a new machine have done a fantastic job
Great stuff! Recently acquired a mint breadbin non-yellowed 64 with fudge coloured function keys, they had to be fudge as that was the colour I remember when my cousin used to bring his round to my house forty years ago! I owned a speccy 48k back then but his computer seemed all posh and rolls-roycey compared to mine. Now I've acquired a mint speccy +3 with a gotek as well. Really getting back into all this again, this channel and a few others are inspirational. Thank you.
Thank you for testing your new machine using my NES64 Nintendo gamepad for the C64! So great to see it is finally possible to get a new replacement for EACH and EVERY part of the C64! Fantastic episode as always, Perifractic!
Out of curiosity, whats the cost to build one of these as in the video? Lots of parts to figure out and I know I'm being lazy. Are we talking $1500ish? I had a C64 C128 and a Timex Sinclair 1500 an really love watching these videos.
Loving the Perifractic Edition badge, and fascinating to see all those new parts in one machine. Definitely good news for keeping the C64 running well into the future. I had a C64C where the CIA broke, the real-time clock stopped working and certain games stopped playing.
First, fantastic job. I am really liking the concept of the string lighting you used. The lights gave off a better effect then I thought it would. Finally, the Hans Gruber beard is on point. Very nice!
Awesome to see a 100% NEW C64 in the wild! Keep up the awesome work my friend, looking forward to getting a new breadbin case since mine has all 3 retaining clips busted. Would be lovely to put my childhood 64 into a new case!
But it's not really. These are modern processors and FPGAs emulating the VIC-64 chips. Many 1970s and 80s computers, you can actually build 100% new ones, even today, but not with the VIC (or Amiga) computers and all their special ICs.
I like that they socketed the QAPLA on the new boards. That will make it easier to replace in the event of a failure or new revision (should incompatibilities be found). Very cool board.
The quality of digital filters would not only depend on the sampling rate but also the resolution of the filter. Filter stepping can be audible when doing a filter "sweep" if the resolution is not high enough. In any case, very exciting project and great video! 😄
For making replacements of these old chips, I hope more FPGA designers take advantage of the Fossi Foundation. To make a new chip in the form of an ASIC, you submit your FPGA code, and they'll do a large run of chips for free (paid for by Google), including the packaging the chip comes on (if you're happy to go open-source)
I would have to say that If I had built a brand new 100% new C64. I think I would sit there with the finished board on my desk and just cry with happiness. There are just no words to cover it.
Great video - the quality of your vids is phenomenal, and it's obvious you put a lot of time into it. I didn't know about the replacement CIA chips, and I'm very happy they've finally been produced. Mission accomplished on raising awareness. Also, don't let negative comments get to you; you do you.
Even though it's in most videos, for some reason in this one you completely took me off-guard with the "PCB Waaaayyy!" this time! Great video. I just love your enthusiasm and humour. Even though I never had a C64, I really badly want to build one now! I'll have to have a look in the description and tot up the cost.
That is nothing short of amazing. It makes me happy to see folks continuing to support this old platform and creating replacement components to keep it going for years to come. Would that I could afford this. This is the only computer that gave me absolute joy to use. Thanks for all you do to promote all things C64.
Hi, I just wanted to write you a quick real message to say that I'm incredibly grateful you have chosen to support us in this way. It really does help the content continue. Cheers! Your friend in retro, Perifractic
Honestly, it took me a while to get into the silliness and spirit of this channel but, dammit, I love it now. Such a well crafted thing you've created here.
hey, I've been watching for some time now, don't change ! its perfect the way it is!!! I remember the days in my childhood playing comodore64 games! mine had a cassette tape drive for loading programs. even waiting for several minutes to load a simple game was worth it. thanks for the content!!!
Not that you had to justify yourself to the trolls, but you did so admirably. At 2:07 particularly made me smile. Anyway, this whole project is quite fantastic, and I for one, appreciate all the effort you've put in. I demand you continue with this format, the dad jokes and the doggo speech bubbles! That is all.
Alright signed up for a set of chips for my sixty-clone build. Thanks for putting the fire under the J-CIA project. Also showed interest in the CPU and VIC chips as well. Also heckin jelly you built an all new C-64 before me
My wife and I love watching your channel. It brings us great joy and memories. Thank you so much for the enormous effort that goes into producing the content.
All of your comment responses deserve a chef's kiss. Almost disappointed no one complained about the music you use, so that you could brag about how you wrote and performed all of it. Your videos making the C64 music keyboard and multitrack recording of your theme are the whole reason I found Retro Recipes. Keep being you, and best wishes to all the 'Fractics!
Love it, and also love the big FU to those intellectually challenged haters out there who hide behind their little screens and tippety-tap away in a vain attempt to rattle your cage and draw attention to themselves! I can also completely understand why your voice has been requested on numerous star-studded films, but some people...well, their envy is very envydent, lol We are of a similar age and brought up around similar things, and I honestly can't think of anybody else on UA-cam who touches the nostalgic parts that other hearts simply cannot reach. The recreation of your childhood bedroom setups, building that Star Wars arcade replica, the Brixty Four, this brand new C64...projects done with love and a passion for sharing are beyond reproach. My personal fave and machine with the most nostalgia is the Amiga 500, specifically the demo scene, and even more specifically, the music. I used to love the challenge of ripping MOD files from demos and intros using things like the Datel Action Replay. I'm a massive fan of synth and electronic music of all kinds, and the fact that you compose your own music too is just the icing on the Perifruitic Cake. Never stop doing you, and for sheer giggles, keep on ripping into the haters as well, was comedic gold they would never understand! lol Cheers!
Been watching your shows for awhile now. This one especially helped me out a bit on 3 C64's I have that I want to restore that I acquired 5 years ago and finally unboxed everything. Hopefully they still work... ended up with over 30 carts too plus 2 ti99's and accessories plus some things I haven't identified yet. The collection was originally owned by a programmer that supposably worked for Commadore that passed away. Got at least 50 plus cassettes loaded with original stuff that he was working on. Once I get one system up and running I plan on checking them out.
I will say that I think that this channel and your episodes should be filled with the things that you love and care about Peri. You love and care about your dogs so if you want to keep having them in your videos DO IT!
that there are now real new replacement chips I find very good. But I am happy that my original C64C still works like the first day. Childhood is childhood and can't be replaced by anything new, at least that's how I feel.
Woah! You’re Gavyn Sykes! I played so much Star Wars: Battle for Naboo on my Pentium II when I was a kid. I have that name burned into my memory from playing so much of that game. I never would have put together that you played him! Love the channel, keep it up.
@@RetroRecipes Thanks for the reply! I actually just recently reinstalled Battle for Naboo on my newly restored Pentium III 1ghz CuMine build, but I haven't gotten around to playing much of it yet. Your commodore content is awesome, and I really appreciate the work you and the rest of the community is doing to provide newly manufactured replacements to keep these old 8bit machines running well into the future!
I want a Amiga 500 or 1200 like this. I wish the EVO people would do a reproduction amiga board, the KORG Amp would be neat to run all the accelerated DEMO's and Amiga games have some good audio, it would be neat.
That all NEW C64 is a thing of beauty! -- I don't get how anyone can say anything negative about your content, you have brought the retro community more nostalgia than anyone else on the platform and your loyal followers closer to our fondest memories of a golden age in computing. Keep up the amazing work!
Love this channel. As a fellow Brit you speak perfectly normally to me - but compared to overexcited American UA-camrs I guess we’re just naturally a little quieter! Found you in the new zzap mags too - great work!
This all has me curious about what kind of music composition software can take advantage of those dual SIDs. Which ones are actually good? Every computer needs a "killer app".
Indeed, this is 100% newly purchased parts - very nice! I am still really fascinated with the idea of finding an old one dirt cheap and learning to solder so I can do a proper restore.
Iwas going to say they should have a backlit keyboard. And maybe figure a way to add video acceleration to the machine also have a way to see the korg light up thru the case.
It's so awesome that we're able to make new C64's that will expand the lifetime of C64, when the old hardware stops working these new ones will be around to extend it.
I'm sure the ArmSID chips sound amazing with the Evo NuTube, but who watching this video could tell after UA-cam's compression and then through someone else's speakers?
Superb stuff! I will need to buy some of these new chips as I am currently trying to fix up some C64s and getting frustrated with pulling chips out to test if they work or not. Result being i have broken a pin on the VIC-II , the Kawari VIC-II replacement and some CIA chips. Hopefully I can repair those. Whats the safest way to remove chips from old sockets? my chip puller seems to bend pins
Note that the resurrection of the C64 occured about the same time as Easter...iust saying.( I hsve it on good authority that the Almighty uses a C128D but mostly in C64 mode.)
Super awesome video! lol...honestly, why even call out those "commenters"? I thought the original video was very clear! ...anywho - Can you share those LEDs you used for the keyboard? I have a similar issue and was looking for something but concerned about the clearance for the keys (so they can still be pressed down). Looks like you have a winner there!
This was a rare excuse to call out the idjits. I've held back for 5 years. Had to get it out! And sure I'll add the LEDs to the video description in one second...
What a gorgeous new build! I never owned a C64 when I was younger (I had to wait for the A500) but after seeing this, I want one now :) And don't listen to the bad comments, your channel is one of the best (if not THE best) retro content on the Internet ;) Thanks god they don't do the same kind of build for Amiga, or my wallet would be out of control :D
I really wanted to bring this to your attention on the old vid but the comments were turned off by the time I found it. There’s another c64 board called the Uni64. It’s pretty similar to the c64reloaded with its barrel connector power input and general similarity to the short-boards. The craziest part is that it supports not just two SIDs but _three_
This is one of the best perma-computing channels! And your voice is awesomely nice. It is warm and nice. It is also relaxing! There is always interesting things to talk about and your channel is funny!
That's not a C64 it's an Evo64 and you didn't even use a Commodore joystick, it was a Nintendo joystick. You big faker. Moysem glavum, I have to go lay down in my mom's basement and eat some pop-tarts. In te real world though. I love the effort that goes into these projects. The fact that there are companies replicating 40 year old tech speaks volumes about the love for these machines. I was a speccy user at first it took a few years to come over to Commodore, but I never regretted it. Later I went from an Atari ST to am Amiga.
Absolutely loved this video, was waiting patiently for the true 100% new system and it blows my mind that this was possible without any fpga to plug the gaps. I built one of the harlequin spectrum systems which I love but does using an EPROM with the original ROM image constitute a ‘new’ chip? I’m undecided.. Also a round of applause is due for the perfect way of addressing the haters! Your videos are full of happiness and pure nostalgia, I don’t understand how anyone can nit pick or be negative about them.. oh wait this is UA-cam 😂
I had no idea about your prolific acting/VO career before now - thanks trolls, I learned something new! I hugely enjoy your videos, and all the brilliant 80s nostalgia that comes with it.
You're doing great work. I'm sorry that folks complain about things they don't like. And I don't enjoy UA-cam creators complaining about the platform - or negative comments. I'd take advice from vintage Dion Warwick and "Scroll on by...". I'm a long time subscriber and enjoy your work. Best Wishes and Continued Success!
Understood. This was my first proper moment to answer critics in 5 years. Likely won't happen again, and if it does it will be in a much more light-hearted way (you'll see). Thanks for being a valued subscriber

Ive no idea what went on in the comments of the other video to get them disabled but Im here to say love this channel and all its little quirks 👍
Recently got back to gaming on the Commodore 64 loving it more so than next gen gaming due to watching your channel thank you is all ima can say Commodore 64 gaming has been missing from my life for way to long...
How do u more happy c64 gaming thn next gen
Thanks for the donation! We feature it again in the next The ЯRetro Show 👍🕹
Out of curiosity, whats the cost to build one of these as in the video? Lots of parts to figure out and I know I'm being lazy. Are we talking $1500ish? I had a C64 C128 and a Timex Sinclair 1500 an really love watching these videos.
Loving the Perifractic Edition badge, and fascinating to see all those new parts in one machine. Definitely good news for keeping the C64 running well into the future. I had a C64C where the CIA broke, the real-time clock stopped working and certain games stopped playing.
Cheers mate! Hope you got that fixed!
Amazing, and that it worked directly is beyond comprehensive.
Really well done, looks and obviously plays beautifuly! ❤️
I like that they socketed the QAPLA on the new boards. That will make it easier to replace in the event of a failure or new revision (should incompatibilities be found). Very cool board.
Exactly why the QAPLA was modularized. Ensures easy replacement and future-proofing programmability.
Thanks for all of the amazing videos and keeping up with the commodore! Keep doing what you like doing!
I would have to say that If I had built a brand new 100% new C64. I think I would sit there with the finished board on my desk and just cry with happiness.
There are just no words to cover it.
Thorought enjoyed every moment of this video, considering I watched every second of the first one. Much look forwards to the next !
Great video - the quality of your vids is phenomenal, and it's obvious you put a lot of time into it. I didn't know about the replacement CIA chips, and I'm very happy they've finally been produced. Mission accomplished on raising awareness. Also, don't let negative comments get to you; you do you.
Thank you
Even though it's in most videos, for some reason in this one you completely took me off-guard with the "PCB Waaaayyy!" this time!
Great video. I just love your enthusiasm and humour. Even though I never had a C64, I really badly want to build one now! I'll have to have a look in the description and tot up the cost.
Nice build! I LIKE the refraction gradient C64 labels. Badgeman is the maestro, isn't he?
Really is!
That is nothing short of amazing. It makes me happy to see folks continuing to support this old platform and creating replacement components to keep it going for years to come. Would that I could afford this. This is the only computer that gave me absolute joy to use. Thanks for all you do to promote all things C64.
Thanks! Epic opener 😂
That's really interesting and nice to hear. Thanks for sharing and sticking around!
hey, I've been watching for some time now, don't change ! its perfect the way it is!!!
So glad you like it!
Alright signed up for a set of chips for my sixty-clone build. Thanks for putting the fire under the J-CIA project. Also showed interest in the CPU and VIC chips as well. Also heckin jelly you built an all new C-64 before me
Excellent ! Please bring back Mr Angrys character. Reminds me the Monty Python angry spectators
Great channel, Perfect style, Most importantly very informative for retro gaming what a fun machine.
Insanely brilliant content!
You are so talented, this is nearly as good as your New Amiga 1200.
👏
My wife and I love watching your channel. It brings us great joy and memories. Thank you so much for the enormous effort that goes into producing the content.
Aaah, excellent video! Now someone need to put together a kit with all the necessary parts and we will be good to go ❤😊
It's a thing of beauty! The C64 blue screen of life just about brings a tear to the eye when I see that.
I could emulate a C64 all day long on my PC and be perfectly fine... BUT seeing this.... the desire is strong, the system looks wonderful
The desire is strong...but the space is limited. :-(
@@acubley and pocket is lite ;p
All of your comment responses deserve a chef's kiss. Almost disappointed no one complained about the music you use, so that you could brag about how you wrote and performed all of it. Your videos making the C64 music keyboard and multitrack recording of your theme are the whole reason I found Retro Recipes.
Keep being you, and best wishes to all the 'Fractics!
Heheh cheers mate
Love it, and also love the big FU to those intellectually challenged haters out there who hide behind their little screens and tippety-tap away in a vain attempt to rattle your cage and draw attention to themselves! I can also completely understand why your voice has been requested on numerous star-studded films, but some people...well, their envy is very envydent, lol
We are of a similar age and brought up around similar things, and I honestly can't think of anybody else on UA-cam who touches the nostalgic parts that other hearts simply cannot reach.
Never stop doing you, and for sheer giggles, keep on ripping into the haters as well, was comedic gold they would never understand! lol
Cheers!
I love the way you worded that first para! Thank you for your kind words! Means a lot 👍🕹
Yep. It's crazy to me some people don't get that. "Make YOUR videos MY way". Erm no!
Extraordinarily cool video! And Jan Beta is such a wonderful guy, hahaha! Merci, Chris !
that there are now real new replacement chips I find very good.
I love hearing that! It's equally cool to me that you played the game and remember the character name. May the Force be with you 🚀
@@RetroRecipes Thanks for the reply!
That's Awesome!!! It truly is amazing that a new C64 can be built! Once again Amazing video and keep up the Great work!!!!
That all NEW C64 is a thing of beauty! -- I don't get how anyone can say anything negative about your content, you have brought the retro community more nostalgia than anyone else on the platform and your loyal followers closer to our fondest memories of a golden age in computing. Keep up the amazing work!
Aw thank you!
Brilliant job! Love the black case - were these ever available with original Commodores?
Thanks! Nope
I'm not entirely certain, as I didn't watch the entire video, but I *think* this may be the first all-new 100% chipset based C64 in decades?
Love this channel. As a fellow Brit you speak perfectly normally to me - but compared to overexcited American UA-camrs I guess we’re just naturally a little quieter! Found you in the new zzap mags too - great work!
Thanks neighbour!
A thing of beauty. Well done. Keep the good work.
I absolutely love your videos! Still have 3 Commodore 64's. I have to work on my tech skills. Keep up the good work! Cheers!
Omg!! Thank you for making C64 relevant in 2023, that is my childhood in the 1980s C64. Great times 💜💜80s💜💜
So nice that laurel made these new cpu’s!
6:02 A big thank you to Laurel for making these chips available.
I'm sure the ArmSID chips sound amazing with the Evo NuTube, but who watching this video could tell after UA-cam's compression and then through someone else's speakers?
I love your channel and you really should not be bothered by the haters!
P.S.
Your dogs are wonderful! 🥰
Chip puller can be a bit harsh. The other way is gently prize them up using a flathead watch screwdriver in alternating ends.
Note that the resurrection of the C64 occured about the same time as Easter...iust saying.( I hsve it on good authority that the Almighty uses a C128D but mostly in C64 mode.)
Actually filmed right at Easter 🤯
Egg cellent
Super awesome video! lol...honestly, why even call out those "commenters"? I thought the original video was very clear! ...anywho - Can you share those LEDs you used for the keyboard? I have a similar issue and was looking for something but concerned about the clearance for the keys (so they can still be pressed down). Looks like you have a winner there!
This was a rare excuse to call out the idjits. I've held back for 5 years. Had to get it out! And sure I'll add the LEDs to the video description in one second...
What a gorgeous new build! I never owned a C64 when I was younger (I had to wait for the A500) but after seeing this, I want one now :)
And don't listen to the bad comments, your channel is one of the best (if not THE best) retro content on the Internet ;)
Thanks god they don't do the same kind of build for Amiga, or my wallet would be out of control :D
Thank you for your kind words! Means a lot 👍🕹
I really wanted to bring this to your attention on the old vid but the comments were turned off by the time I found it. There’s another c64 board called the Uni64. It’s pretty similar to the c64reloaded with its barrel connector power input and general similarity to the short-boards. The craziest part is that it supports not just two SIDs but _three_
That looks absolutely spanking. Lovely job 😘
Awesome chap I remeber my mom buying my first C64c from Index catalouge shop back in the day.
@@RetroRecipes You're a stand-up guy. You and your family are a delight. Party on, friend!
The commodore 64 was my first computer, I loved it. I had the bread box version with a tape deck, but a eventually bought a disk drive for it.
Very cool. Would love to see a project like this to preserve my C128 as well that I grew up with.
@3:16 That flex, brilliant. Ok, we do come here for the C64 content but we watch for the humour, and long may it continue as such.
Oh this made me giddy with nostalgia. Thank you. X
Excellent content as always. Amazing that it is possible to build a "brand new" c64 after so long time.
Right? Just incredible!
Thank you thank you thank you for all you do my man. ALSO: I can't wait to get my hands on a clear bread bin case. Amazing!
Great video, as always! And I'm looking forward to the episode when Jani gets the Amiga 500 CIA ready. Will you build an all-new 500? There are boards out there...
I'll have to see if every other chip has been replicated yet or not...
Awesome video and love the positive messages! Just one thing missing from your list of accessories. Where did you get that monitor stand? 😍
