HP Tuning the GM 6L transmission - what do the tables actually change?

- This is the first part of a many part series covering what the tables actually change when tuning a 6L80 transmission. Many of the tables aren't very intuitive and the descriptions are very misleading. I'm going to run this tapped and prodded valvebody in an otherwise stock vehicle so we can actually see what is changing when we tweak the calibration. In this video, I show what I did to the valve body and proved it out on the trans dyno before installing in the vehicle.

This information is incredibly valuable, I very much appreciate you taking the time to uncover the parameters of the 6 speed in HP tuners
Really looking forward to this series. Remember that the virtual torque tables, both airmass & map, in the ECM influence the pressures the transmission sees and requires adjustment, especially when adding power adders such as blowers, turbos or even a camshaft upgrade.
Can't wait for the next videos. I recently installed a 6l90 into a TrailblazerSS and tuning these 6L transmissions is top of mind.
I’ve been in my trans 4-5 times and I’m a tuner but what I’ve noticed with using the scanner and applying the solenoids especially with tcc solenoid apply it’s not PWM in the scanner so it applys a dangerous amount of pressure . And I have to say your set up is awesome lol. I hope this gets out to a lot of tuners cause there tuning them wrong I see it come into my shop on a daily . And of course Hope to learn something as well. God Bless .
Hey mate, I'm from Australia and I can't find anyone that can tune 6l80e properly. I have a Ford Ranger with LS3/6l80e conversion, do you tune transmission's if sent the tune as a business? If so how do I get hold of you?
Recently decided to go down a rabbit hole of DIY 8 bit computers for ECM and TCM use. Hope this results in additional info I can apply to my logical designs... and maybe eventually a real working example. Only recently uploaded a circuit simulation that's barely enough to show the flow of logic for an ECU that only has crank input and MAP input. Doesn't require software of any kind, but can have an EEPROM added with very little additional circuitry to make it programmable. Heavily inspired by Ben Eater's bread board computer.
What your doing is awesome!!!!
Seen this set up in the HP tunner face book group . Looking forward to seeing this play out 👍👍👍
This is such an awesome video. I would love to see what fiddling around with all the TCC Regulator & Gain values and also the Apply Rates
Really looking forward to where this goes. Thanks for putting this together.
Thanks for the great videos. Before I retired I repaired Caterpillar Tractor engines and powershift transmissions. We would send the finished pieces to the Cat dealer for dyno testing. I quickly learned that if a transmission tested bad it was probably bad, If it tested OK it just meant no faults were found during the test. They could not load or heat the unit enough to duplicate operating conditions. After running the numbers we decided to put more emphasis a on quality rebuild and skip the dealer testing ( Dyno time at the dealer was awful expensive ).
Looks like in this the dyno caught a bad one. I will be curious as to how the chassis dyno testing turns out, this should give you some baseline numbers to work with. I wonder if HP would give you there numbers if you show them yours? When I left the industry transmissions were changing from mechanically controlled valves to electric. Testing went from a test box that weighed 50 lbs to one gauge (or pressure sensor ) and a laptop. I could tell stories. Thanks for putting the effort into training new mechanics, sorry I mean TECHS. It can be a tough way to make a living ( Been there done that )
Hope I didn't scare away any students, Flat Rate can work it takes the right guy in the right shop. Sorry for rambling and have a great New Year.
Cant wait to see upcoming videos. You are the man when it comes to transmissions. I even seen you at one of the atra seminars in vegas. I make changes to a lot of 6l80 90s with hp tuners. I purchased the tuning school books. They are helpful but its a lot of trial and error and you cant always just play around with customers cars. Luckily one of the guys i work with has a 6l80 silverado. Mostly the only changes i do is cylinder drop disable and move lockup out to 4th gear.
Happy testing, looking forward to the next videos.
I’m extremely excited to watch this you are the man!! Can’t wait to TUNE in lol
have a great New Year, and thanks for your content.
excellent video, I learn a lot from you, keep bringing beautiful videos to us.
Very Interesting. Looking forward for part 2.
Hopefully this will get us some progress and get us more support, especially for the existing TCMs we have access to control. Right now all we have is just a bunch of tables and numbers and switches on HP Tuners. The reality is almost everything besides the shift scheduling (and even it sometimes) does not work or respond to changes. All the tables and numbers look nice and provide a nice placebo effect though.
Pretty cool. I always drive manuals, but this is still cool stuff to see.
Looking to make life easier for a new 6L and converter in my 200k mile 16’ Sierra. Anxiously awaiting updates!
Subscribed! When's the next video due? Thanks!!
Am excited 🍿📺
Great videos, thank you. I've got a question if you could please comment. I've got a 2017 Yukon with a 6L80 and a 5.3 with 60 k on it. I had a converter and pump put in it about 20 k ago due to some shuddering and some HP tuning done at a local shop more recently. I'm going to get into the HP thing myself to hopefully fine tune things because I'm still not happy. Main concern is tcc lockup in 1,2 and 3 because the engine just struggles to make enough power on mild hills/turns when it shifts to 2nd or 3rd, it really struggles and it's because tcc is locked and wont release. You and many others are routinely doing the 317/318 trick to block tcc in 1,2,3 and 4. I asked my "guy" to to it in 1,2 and 3 (dont think I need it in 4th) (FYI, he is a VERY experienced trans builder and tuner), he told me he's not comfortable doing that because he has seen many failed transmissions that have had that HP tune tweek in it. He instead decided to disable the torque reduction on up and downshifts in order to give the engine more power. I do notice more power during and just after the shifts, with a mild increase in firmness (not too much to worry about). Question is, is it really safe to do this tcc 317/318 thing in 1,2,and 3? Also, I would love it if the tcc would release at say 5-60% throttle in 4-5-6 again to give the engine a chance to make power, instead, as it is now, it just downshifts, with tcc still locked, and still struggling to make power even in the lower gear, especially up hills. Thanks for any feedback.
Did you ever correct this problem ?
With the shuddering
Awesome 👌
I have 2011 Yukon XL 2500 ECM, it came with 6L90e , for my swap project I need 6L80 , What should I change on the ECM to use the 6L80 instead of 6L90 ?
Very interesting, so its been 5 months now, any updates? Don't leave us hanging!
International trans kits are ok?😮😅😊
Siu!! Time to lay some pipe in my mind! 🤠
Hi there l have seen your video on automatic transmission l have a problem in my Mitsubishi Eclipse 2001 automatic transmission 4cy it start going to safe mode by N flashing on my gear selector and all that happened after l changed my heater core l took out the whole dash and after l fixed it start having the flashing (N) and only goes to 3 speed and stays there the scanner shows solonide 2 have a problem l changed 1. 2 and 3 solonide still have the same problem and l changed the sensor on the top of the transmission selector sensor still have a problem do think li could be a ground under the dash l missed please let me know thanks l am a subscriber

How’d you go mate? Send me the tune and I can give you a hand, based in AUS as well
Whoa!
