I definitely believe that the twist of tyler being the villain wasn't revealed to the actor before the day of shooting. He 100% is playing an infatuated love intrest, who likes Wednesday because shes interesting and different from anyone hes ever met. without a doubt, there was absolutely no subtlety of malicious intent to pick up on because the actor wasn't told he was the villain until the end of shooting

What had me give it a second chance was the afterthought of: If generations of the Adams went to a school for the weird (which does in fact destroy the point of them being weird), it does provide a valid reason for them to believe that weird IS normal. It also explains all the references to the family's strange aquaintences made in the original show. Long story short I agree with both of the videos if that seems possible.

Wednesday's child is full of woe. I haven't had access to the full Addams family library, but from what I have seen, this Wednesday seems to be more in touch with the comics core characterization of her as a somewhat timid, sensitive and intelligent child. If I had one criticism of the Adams Family Matters Wednesday, it would be that she's too confident. Arguably out of all of the core cast, Wednesday has had the most alterations, going from a timid child, to a normal one with unusual interests, to one with a flat affect and a slight sadistic streak, to a girl simply trying to fit in to be normal. Wednesday is at her best, I think, when these characteristics are nicely Blended, because while the other characters in the family have found their place and their interests, Wednesday hasn't. It allows her to have this in between perspective that fuels her intelligence. It seems like Wednesday is somewhat of an effort to bring all of her versions together, showing how someone contradictory person may not be contradictory at all. Wednesday is not just one thing, and the struggle that makes her compelling is figuring out how to balance all of the aspects of who she is. Thank you for letting me know that this show is actually rather good. I heard so many mixed opinions that when you said you had a name of it, I was prepared to drop it all together and not even think of watching it. Thanks!

I've been a lifelong Addams Family fan (bordering on obsessive) and I have to say I don't know that Wednesday was actually developed enough prior to the 1990's films to say she had much of a defined character. Charles Addams created the individual family members in single-panel comics for The New Yorker; there wasn't much room to build character development beyond the children playing with alarming "toys" and occasionally tormenting each other in simple scenarios. The television show obviously couldn't have Lisa Loring and Ken Weatherwax do anything that would have been considered too controversial for the time, thus the children were much less a presence in the show. Christina Ricci's portrayal has pretty much cemented her image as a shockingly morbid child with a penchant for beheading dolls and spouting one-liners well beyond her years. I remember when the 1991 film was first released, NOBODY could speak about it without mentioning Christina Ricci. She pulled the rug out from every other of the highly accomplished actors in that film and her popularity resulted in Wednesday being a much more prominent character in the sequel. If the franchise will ever shake that image in future iterations of the family, it'll be far in the future. Jenna Ortega was great in the role and with how the character was expanded in the Netflix series, but it's virtually impossible for her iteration not to exist in Ricci's shadow.
(As an aside, I have to thank you. For once, I'm not the only one writing full-length novels in UA-cam comments. Ha!)

I do think Wednesday was soft compared to earlier iterations still, but that might have been a lack of development.

I was reading about the Salem witch trials and burnings of witches in history, and I came across “witch hunters” (yes these were real people apparently). They were not regarded with the same attitude by society and were instead praised because they were eliminating the witches, similar to how Crackstone is trying to get rid of the outcasts. These real witch hunters also allegedly used spells, herbs and trickery to get rid of witches, not just by killing them, so perhaps that’s where the show writers got the inspiration to give him magic.

I'm not a subscriber to the channel, just a passing Addams Family fan, but Joseph Crackstone and his family using magic, dark arts, is one of the most realistic things about the show. That and the sadism with which he wants to kill helpless people, while self-appointing himself as the savior, the good guy. In my personal opinion and with some evidence to back it up, fanatics of all kinds tend to be some of the biggest hypocrites out there. Back in the day, in WWII, the Germans, the swastika wearers, used as an example of the perfect race a Jewish baby, apparently they couldn't tell them apart from their own. Islamic terrorists have financed themselves, among other things, by selling drugs, except that it is forbidden by the Koran. Torquemada killed and tortured people in the name of the same god whose commandment says Thou shalt not kill. Or the sale of indulgences to absolve sins. A Borgia was pope. Leaders of X ideology wanting the people to live one way while they live another. The world is full of such examples.

5- this always annoyed me if everyone in nevermore was a monster than WHY WAS EVERONE RUNNING AWAY AND AFRAID FROM A NORMIE (i get crackstone had a wand but still i really was they gave him more powers and made the school have a fight scene)
6- the fighting scene was so disappointing wedesday did nothing she was just standing there the whole time and it was annoying
6.5- they have showed wednesday fight before it was literally in the first ep idk why she didn't do anything she showed she knows how to use a bow/sword before yet they didn't do anything
7- why did she became dumber as the ep continued in the first eps wedday was more carefully and didn't go accusing people without enough evidences and in the end it was like IT WAS YOU- WHAT NO IT WAS YOU it was annoying

I really enjoyed Wednesday, but I fully agree with your opinion on the resurrection of the Pelgrim. It was too easy and not in line with what the big antagonist stood for. In that regard, it would have been even better that he'd kill himself as Wednesday pointed out the flawed logic of his return to the mortal realm in the way that he did. Or he could have turned on the person that used the magic to bring him back. It would have been more true to character.
I also believe that, even if the first 4 or 5 episodes were very strong, you can already see the potential "Riverdale"/"Sabrina" pitfalls for season 2. It will partly have something to do with the growth arch that you see in all coming-of-age series and movies. Mainly the progress that Wednesday already made during the first season. You can't press reset on that. We all saw and loved how she grew as a person. You can applaud that kind of change in real life, but as a fictional character, it might change her in a way that she might become too unrecognizable. It's going to be a difficult balancing act going forward. I hope they can pull it off. We can only wait and see.
But if it turns out that the story would become too weak, the makers should have the guts to say: "We told a fun story, portraited the iconic Wednesday in a nice contemporary way, and we had the opportunity to showcase great new acting talent to a wider audience. Let's keep it at that and don't spoil what we've accomplished thusfar." And also as an audience, we should realize that value lies in scarcity.

@@daniellewalker256 it especially hurts my feelings, because I watched caos since 2018. If they went more with horror aspects, (something i really expected and wanted based off teasers) and actually planned out the world that they put their characters into (and also made characters BETTER) it would've definitely became another Stranger Things. Actress was great, the vibes were there, but they made a mistake of making the character basically too powerful. Like - in season 3 she would go to hell and get Nick back IN ONE EPISODE. When I saw trailers I thought it would be a major arc in the whole season, but this girlie just does it in 5 minutes. Also the editing - the fish eye thing from season 1 was so annoying... glad they changed it. Another thing is that they just rushed the show. Like season 2 came out 0,5 year later after the first season... I feel like show needs some kind of criticism and breathe some fresh air before just jumping into it. Another thing that they failed at was making Sabrina just enjoyable character. Like I said - I love Kieran Shipka in the role, but the character itself was giving off Mary Sue vibes. They tried to make perfect character that never ever fails and made the whole show look dumb and character turned out being this toxic person, who is selfish enough to think that she's always right. This girl solves some walmart rubik's cube in 10 minutes, while not even being a witch, even though father Blackwood spent like 20 years on it or smth.
Why did the show made Ambrose, a 100 year old guy, have not only romantic, but also *sexual* relationship with Prudence who is 17/18???? (he also had a sexual something during s1 with all weird sisters and even Nick)
Why didn't they just bury Sabrina in kain's grave after she died???
Why does the end of the show just ends with it gloryfiing suicide???

They hated it, one of them called it "the worst form of escapist trash".
A couple of months later after it was burning up the media and breaking all kinds of box-office records they reviewed it again, the tone of the review pretended as though this was their FIRST time experiencing and reviewing it, AND THEY LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.
    Couldn't praise it highly enough.
Another critic at the same time reviewed it and hated it. He presented all his criticisms in a reasoned and thought provoking manner but he rationally supported his dislike for the film.
25 years later Star Wars was getting an anniversary release, and he was asked to critique it again.
His headline: "Star Wars; It was cr*p 25 years ago, and it's STILL cr*p now".

Shawn has taken this one step further, he reviewed it and [IMO] made unfair snap judgements, seeming to jump on the youtube "Hate Everything" bandwagon. NOW he has more closely examined the show, and has had the good graces to clearly and plainly admit he was wrong.

Also I really hope they don't go along with giving her some type of romantic partner, I really don't think it fits the character at all, and to me it seems like she could be aromantic and asexual, as it takes her quite a while to even begin to realise either boy likes her.

I watched your first video and agreed because I felt the same during the first episode. But as I kept watching I realized I had to keep watching and accept this series as it’s own individual thing. Once I separated it, I loved the other characters. Loved Bee Boy! Wednesday’s friendship with him was so sweet. Especially when she only shows love for Uncle Fester, Thing, and her family.
As for the monster and zombie pilgrim, I agree felt kinda lazy. Rolled my eyes when I saw her wound be healed by a ghost. But I did have a laugh that the pilgrim who was set against magic and outcasts, was using dark magic. Hypocrite. And the supposed outcast with powers, stabbed him with a knife. Lol lazy? Maybe. I’m glad that you’re open to altering your initial impression. Personally, from a design standpoint, I don’t like the monster - however…another way to look at the character that became the monster - paying attention to the psychiatric analysis of that character (avoiding spoilers), the loss of a parent, emotional distance, apathy from the remaining parent and a blink and you’ll miss it, implied suicide attempt…(in the bathtub where this character screams underwater venting out their frustration/rage/anger/guilt)…extreme GRIEF can warp a person’s mind. And even after revealing themselves to Wednesday as the monster, you can see a glimmer of regret and pain there. They knew deep down they cared about Wednesday but the psychopathy is already in full effect, as well as the Hyde answering to its master bit that further complicates things…it’s how tragedy and personal inner struggles destroy a person.
(I used they to avoid spoilers despite it being discussed in the video.)
I deeply empathize with Enid, I am a perky, colorful artist with dyed hair, stuffed plushies, draperies and all that in my bedroom…thought i’m a full fledged adult in my 30’s. I still have a very toxic relationship with my mother and a disappointment to her as I not only was a late-bloomer but my chosen career is not what she constantly wanted and badgered me for. I also share a close and supportive bond with my father, much like Enid. She isn’t a “NOT REALLY A WEREWOLF”, SHE IS. She’s just a late bloomer.
I also understand the daughter’s perspective in “living under your mother’s shadow” and wanting you, the daughter to follow in their footsteps, when you want to pave your own path - and that often creates a rift between a mother and a daughter. BEFORE, the CHILD Wednesday loved her mother and vise versa without question, as many young children do, but as they grow into their own person, conflict often arises when the mother has hopes and expectations that don’t meet with their daughter’s.
Again, speaking from a mother-daughter’s perspective.
While the series isn’t 100% perfect, don’t quite agree with several of your older points from the first video. I felt very deeply for most of the characters. The incredible amount of work Jenna Ortega did to prepare for this role is admirable. She learned languages, fencing, cello, even accurately dancing how the goth subculture expresses themselves. That deserves a lot of praise.❤

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on the series. I think your take on the monster and its thematic importance in the story is really compelling. I may need to watch the show a third time with this in mind. Again, I feel that I may have dismissed an aspect of the show because I was misreading it.
Yeah, Enid's pretty much the best and I'm glad that she seems to be the breakout character of the show. And as a guy who has way too many plushies and plays with a puppet, I can relate to your feeling a little out of synch with other adults. I'm sorry about your relationship with your mother, but I'm glad you've got a strong bond with your father.
In terms of the relationship between Wednesday and Morticia, I feel like I understood it a lot more after viewing the entire series (and knowing Morticia's secrets). Though as a man, I'll admit that my understanding of mothers-daughter relationships is always going to be limited, so my understanding of that aspect of the series will be as well. That's a big reason why I appreciate comments like yours so much.
And you're completely right about Ortega's performance, I definitely appreciated it a lot more on my second watch.
Thank you again for leaving such a smart, thoughtful comment. I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts and your perspective.

spoilers: I thought the monster was interesting because he's not at execution of his own life, he'sunder control of his genes and his 'master' . He even slips at one point that he saved her life as if she should be on his side. He does like her and when his nice guyism doesn't work he slips into his wrath and Hyde persona against her. When he says he defeated her he's not cruel to her because he's evil (per se (though it's very arguable that he's evil)) but because he didn't win her and he thought she would be on his side, he was hurt and lashing out, he says 'how does it feel to be defeated?' not because he really feels he defeated her, but because he's projecting and in fact he feels he failed at least subconsciously. He saw her as like him and wanted her as a mate.

The Monster and the Mystery were intriguing, even up to the point where Wednesday realised that Tyler was the Hyde. But it went downhill from there pretty quickly, and it didn't seem to have an emotional payoff.

In your other video that inspired me to watch the show, you said the point of the Addams is they didn't know they were weird. While that is mostly true in the first show it's also true the kids didn't go to school(As your clip showed).
In the first show, she was only 6yo. It would stand to reason that when the kids did finally go to a public school the kids would realize they were different.
There have been many Reddit posts dedicated to asking the question "What did your family do that you thought was normal?"(...It's also where I heard of a "poop knife" for the ones that won't go down the drain)
Most kids go through feeling like their families aren't like the other kid's families at least on some level and the older the kid gets the stronger the feeling may get.
The one constant with the main non-animated tellings of the Addams family is that each telling of the story the kids are a bit older so maybe it's just the natural progression that they(more so the kids) would learn they're a bit odd.

I loved your analysis of the original humor of the "The Addams Family" which was nicely adapted in the 1964 TV-show. And how it changed through the different later adaptions.
But I disagreed with your point how the Netflix show ruined "Wednesday" or "The Addams Family".
I think you are very right about how the modern societies are way more open and how it is most likely that a "The Addams Family" would be accepted despite their weirdness by people today.
But honestly, I think that the satire was always more about the normal people and their behaviour than about the Addams. They were always likeable characters, sympathetic for the audience.
I do not know the cartoons, but the 1964 TV show. And there, aside from all weirdness, it was always shown how the Addams have pretty relatable traits. The love between Gomez and Morticia, the love for their children. Fester is a crazy character, but a good brother and uncle to the kids.
But there is also something else: Gomez and Morticia are not afraid of or negative about social contacts to other people, like their neighbours (like you depicted, they do not even know how they are weird to them). But Wednesday and Pugsley may know that they are "outsiders" because of the interactions with other kids.
The 1990-movies played in some scenes with that in a way.
The thing about the Netflix-show is for me, that it actually is not just another adaption of "The Addams Family", but a continuation, in which Wednesday Addams has her "coming of age"-story.
A big motif of the show is, how Morticia and Gomez are actually hoping that Wednesday will enjoy her stay at the "Nevermore School" make some friends and have fun.
And this leads to your question about "Wednesday and autism spectrum": No, she is most likely not.
The problem of Wednesday is more the lack of social competence. Which is not her fault at all. How could she have ever learned any social competence, when she (and Pugsley) were always treated as outsiders and the kids in her former schools were totally hostile towards her?
This is in my expierence pretty realistic, even in a modern society.
As much as I disliked the idea of "Nevermore Academy", because it looked like something more fitting into "The Munsters"-franchise, it was a pretty nice way to put Wednesday among other kids, who are not really having that much of problems with her "weirdness", because they are "freaks themselves".
And this is why I think that Enid is one of the best parts of the show: Enid is sweet and friendly towards her new roommate, but Wednesday does not understand this, can not handle it. Again, because other kids were only hostile to her before and she lacks social competence for this situation.
In the show, Wednesday is learning that other people can actually be interested to be friend with her, but she has also to learn, that her bevavior, to be careless and negative towards other people, which was a useful shield against hostile kids, but is hurting now Enid and others, who are not acting hostile and do not deserve it. See the episode, when Enid is almost giving up on her, even questioning herself about "being to dependent". Enid confronted Wednesday with her feeling of being abused and mistreated by her, and gives Wednesday something to think about.
This is also a pretty realistic and a relatable thing. Or at least I can relate to it, because in my teenage years I was not a hugger as well. :D There were even people like "Enid" in my life and I gave them a hard time because I was too much used to be a sarcastic and cynical "loner". (But there was also a "Happy End")
About the "Murder Mystery"... yeah, well. I aggree it was not a really great story. But I honestly think, the great characters and their development making up for this.

  • @IndependentMind115
    @IndependentMind115 2 роки тому +1

Again, the show was very entertaining, giving us tidbits of the original Addams family premise of dark satire and twisted humor. But that's all that we were given. One of the things that was most characteristic of Wednesday was the line at the end of the first episode which was "Let's see. I narrowly avoided death twice, discovered that my father may be a murderer, learned that I could potentially destroy the school, and was mysteriously saved by a homicidal monster. As much as it pains me to admit, you were right, Mother. I think I'm going to love it here." (I do disagree with the "As much as it pains me to admit" part though.) Other than this, it was just witty one-liners that we all devoured like children eating Santa's cookies, and the macabre themes that Tim Burton and Danny Elfman are so prized for.
The monster thread added intrigue, but it was basically a red herring as the main points were the evils of religious zeal, learning to open oneself to others, accepting your parents, and coming into one's own. The body parts could have easily been obtained if Ms. Thornhill did it herself. OR Tyler could have done the murders but _without_ being a Hyde, adding more of a psychological, murder mystery element instead of a supernatural one.
My original thought was that Ms. Thornhill was a Hyde, which was a trait handed down from Joseph Crackstone. This felt more powerful and more political to me, especially in this day and age. If Joseph Crackstone were secretly a Hyde or maybe some form of sorcerer, that would have made his witch hunts and burnings all the more hypocritical. But in this show he's just a normie, meaning that literally anyone who is a religious zealot could be a monster like Crackstone, a political statement I am not at all fond of backing. We did see that hypocrisy somewhat when he was resurrected and used dark magic, but that could be attributed to simply the curse Woody placed on him, thus corrupting his pure religiosity with the same witchcraft he fought in real life. In short, I would have _much_ preferred a hypocritical Crackstone to a normie Crackstone that used magic only after resurrection.
Lastly, I also still stand by my observations on the Addams family dynamics, preferences, and social mindset. The family is not one of outcasts, but creepy, kooky, mysterious, and spooky freaks that don't realize they're freaks. In fact, they think everything and everyone outside of their property is freakish. This Addams family was _too_ integrated. Uncle Fester was one of the only members not sullied by either modernization or distortion of character, and maybe Thing and Lurch too. Pugsley was too depressed. Morticia was too sentimental. Gomez was too sullen (probably because of the murder scandal). Grandmama was probably dead. And I have clearly described Wednesday's character retcon.
Overall, the show was entertaining, fun-filled, and intriguing, and Jenna, Gwendoline, Luis, Catherine, and Christina all did a fabulous job in fulfilling the roles assigned to them. But flashy, bug-eyed monsters and pharisaical ghosts of the past can't all carry the plot.

I think one of the best things to do is look at it for what the show is a new adaptation of the family and especially Wednesday. Jenna's stated the biggest thing about making Wednesday unique was showing a new side to her as a teen and interacting with people and humanizing her a bit more. She also stated that Wednesday would take the role of an antihero and will stray from the traditional hero route which I mean yeah most people wouldn't be fine and happy to torture someone who they were romantically intertwined with a day ago. The point is because you know I'm bad at getting my point across sometimes the best way to look at this is a new adaptation of the characters and I do t think there's anything wrong with thst

What I appreciated were all references to literature. And not only do they work for people without knowledge about the actual reference, but they work deeper as well. For example the Mary Shelley Frankenstein situation with Thornhill. Obviously, it works with Thornhill being a version of Frankenstein and Tyler, her monster (which inherently begs the classic Frankenstein question, who is the monster, creator or creature) then on the level of creating the resurrected Pilgrim. And, the Mary Shelley reference is genius, yes, obviously, she is a writer, therefore Wednesdays "archnemesis". But which makes it work so more, is that Shelley had a complicated relationship to her father (a politician and somehow associated with Gothic literature as well) , and to her mother who was the famous Mary wollestonecraft, who died when she was young. She was always namedropped with her mother, associated and compared. And, her husband, Percy bysshe Shelly, famous romantic/Gothic poet was also very much in the spotlight. And let's not forget all the German places that are name dropped, and German, as Frankenstein was written in Geneva and in the story the actual creature was built in Ingolstadt. The references work on so many levels. Still trying to figure out all the poe references right now

I absolutely found Goody and Crackstone's story interesting because 1) It related to Wednesday's identity as an outcast and provided background behind the world of outcasts and normies and 2.) It is relevant to how young people today struggle with the legacy of ugly history and its effects on their own lives and identities. Crackstone's statue being vandalized is almost a perfect echo of the vandalization and removal of Confederate monuments.
Also, bigots are never consistent with their personal standards and are almost always hypocrites, so Crackstone using magic just so he can kill the people he hates doesn't strike me as odd at all. I think a lot of other unanswered questions can be cleared up later seasons.

Here’s a fun meta thing that you brought my attention to: if Wednesday is a terrible detective, and we trust her as the story’s apparent protagonist, then the classic unawareness of the Addams family that you described in your previous episode is transferred not only to the poor sleuth, but to the audience! We become just as blind as Gomez to what is “normal”: we don’t know whom to trust, and we think everything that is not Wednesday is odd (even if she herself is highlighted as odd in a more literal way).
As far as the monster arc goes, I did find myself drawn to parallels between Crackstone and the modern political landscape, but if it was intended as a critique, it could have run deeper; I agree that the ending felt too easy.

I really don't like it how Wednesday develops "feelings" for someone. I liked her much more in the previous shows where she's more of an intelligent sadistic psychopath who people should not relate with, but find humor in the situations and interaction with normal people. Maybe I could understand her coming of age and being intrigued by guys, but from her own perspective, she's not interested in the suspect and his drive to kill or disregard for life as a common interest, she goes for the normal guy. That for me is just makes no sense and shows how the writers don't understand the character and the Addams family in general. Also the sadistic part of her character is outright missing form her portrayal in the Netflix show.
If the writers wanted to include a love story in the show, they should have focused on Morticia and Gomez. Sexualizing Wednesday was a bad decision from my point of view.
    *SPOILER WARNING*
On top of that, a show which should be a comedy, is turned into a crime show. That wouldn't be that bad, if it was at least a decent crime story, but it's bad. The focus of the story is trying to figure out who's the killer, but Wednesday goes accusing people without concrete evidence. That action depicts her as not very intelligent.
The side story with the prophecy was a boring one. I do understand normies vs weirdos is important for the Addams family humor in general, but it was poorly executed in my opinion.
The side story with the murder coverup by Gomez was a good one. I think it nicely fits the narrative and doesn't seem out of character for any of the parties involved. Though I do think at least a bit of comedy would have been appropriate.
I do think the main actress is very beautiful and I can remember a couple of times while watching the show my hard cold heart turned to warm mushy jelly. There is just something so alluring about her dark eyes. I feel like the more I look at them the more vulnerable I become. In contrast I'm usually more uncaring or even detached when it comes to beauty on screen.
In general I do feel people are watching and liking the show mainly because the main actress is beautiful and plays the role (to the extent it can be played). After all Wednesday should be expressionless in most of the scenes. I think the majority of the acting is being done by the supporting cast. Especially the werewolf roommate acts her pert very well. I can see the production value and effort involved in the show are great and for the most part I do like it. I just wish the writing was better and character portrayal was more closely aligned with the source material and not it's derivatives.

Ok, I really do appreciate the analysis of Wednesday, but I think you are delving into so much more then what is there. Sometimes a show is just a show and I have loved the Addams family since I was kid watching reruns in the 70s. You just have to either like it or not but over analyzing it I feel demeans the true fun of the show and it’s original works in the Saturday evening post and Sunday comic strips not to mention everything else after it. To be clear though, if you gave that analysis in a college classroom I would say you were spot on, but not everyone is a college scholar so sometimes a series is just a fun romp with some old friends we grew up watching and there is nothing wrong with that. Btw… I did love the show. I would have changed some casting but I binged the whole thing till 5 in the morning. Lol😂 ( good work on the analysis though. Very intelligent thought.)

The Wends day's, of the movies, and the whole Adam's clan, read more like a gang of psychopaths, They are generally (though not always) less loyal to each other, but they are causal cruel to other's. In fact, that is the main joke. The casual, dead pan monotone voice when Wends day implies to her younger brother that she is going to kill him. The way that they discuss horrible things without emotions as if they were normal. They are all on the Sociopathic spectrum. I think you did a great job describing the evolution of Addams depiction across their various iterations over the years. The only point I still disagree on is the moral of the story - I think the ending was not about how Wednesday should conform to the norms, but that she should realise how manipulative and hurtful she was being towards her friends. Throughout the series she treats everyone as tools, but by the end has some actual character growth. I think it will be interested in future series seeing Wednesday who is still herself, but actually pays attention to what her freinds say and what their needs are.

Wednesday has given me pause to think about many things about the series. 1) if we assume that the series takes place in 2022 her becoming 16 makes her birthday in 2006. There's only 2 months that have a Friday the 13th (January and October). 2) that fact and New England is usually covered in snow in January I would lean towards her birthday being October 13,2006 which makes her a Libra, balance is very important in that personality (like the dorm room becoming half color and half black and white, a cheerful roommate to her non-emotional state, Goody has platinum blonde hair and wears white to Wednesday's black hair and black attire (the fact that Goody becomes one with Wednesday bringing her more into balance)). There's a few other things that make me feel like Balance is a big part of the story that Wednesday is becoming a more balanced person at the end of the season.

Someone on UA-cam actually willing to adjust their opinion in light of new information?! Will wonders never cease! Your new "reading" of Wednesday as a possible analog for neurodivergence actually makes me think more about my comment on the prior video. the one about how it seems like she has become something of a beacon for certain parts of younger women in society. I think you may be onto something here. Not only is it the Darkness that people are relating to, but it's the other aspects. Just a thought. I think both of your videos are fair and useful points of view. Awesome as usual.

rewatching wednesday is what made me obsessed with the show. i watched it with a friend in english for the first time and was absolutely happy with the show, but not exactly blown away. then i rewatched it with my mum in german and even though i absolutely hate german dubs and it makes me cringe, somehow rewatching wednesday even under those circumstances made it so much better. and now i watch it again and again to see if i find new things (i usually do) and rethink my takes on all these characters. it's grade and not the first time netflix succeeded in doing that to me.

From what I understood about Crackstone, he himself is a demon/outcast, and is projecting his hate outwards onto other outcasts. When Goody sliced him in the neck, his wound healed instantly, and he called her "the devil's daughter herself" or something along those lines (I don't remember).

Well, I am impressed. It was late at night when I first started watching your first review of Wednesday, and felt you missed or overlooked key elements. I saw a commentator say "it's not about Wednesday learning to care about what others think of her, more to care about those who also care for her." (I think I paraphrased, apologies)
I didn't make it completely thru the vid the first time, as I was tired and not ready to give the in-depth comment in reply that I knew I was planning. I saw some other comments pointing out some of these things.
The next day, before I could finish watching your first review the second one popped into my feed. That got me intrigued, so I finished the first vid (which had some interesting information and perspective) then watched this one. Brilliant. Don't feel bad cause you are admitting you got it wrong and that with new information and a rewatch comes new perspective sometimes. You learnt something, and in doing such you shared that to enlighten others instead of letting ego get in the way. Anyways, have a like, comment and subscribe. seeya around :)

As I said on your previous video. There is a way to fix the detective laziness if we can call it that because Wednesday doesn’t necessarily have to be a detective nor this a detective series but rather a show about a person exploring their alternatives through growing up.
Wednesday can be inept as a detective and that’s ok. Because this gives her rooms to grow.
If we go by your early critique of the Adams family. This scenario can be made to be a satirical joke kind of like the original tv incarnation.
    For example:
In a later season Wednesday can be made aware that she has been unaware that her powers aids her and that she doesn’t really have great detective skills. That can be something that everyone notices but she is unaware of. However her drive for truth is aided by her power. So it goes hand in hand. Ultimately she doesn’t have to be a detective or be any good at being a detective. Because she really is not a detective. She is wait for it…. A writer!

All the main characters in the show are actually everyones individuals personalities in our "world" which makes the show better understanding of ourselves. Thats why they are "outcasts." Everyone in the school are rejected by society. In our "world," we are not called outcast but are called creepy or weird. Tyler being the monster is also important because the shows telling us that the guys that are too nice and way too emotional could also be a "monster" meaning using every innocent emotion to, saddest emotion, friendliest emotion-just trying their best to trick a person into doing things they want. Thats why Tyler was a good monster in this part because he used "emotions" as manipulation.

It wasn’t the traditional Addams family show but the shows not called the Addams family so I can get over that. Jenna was a great Wednesday. The show isn’t perfect if you watch the show hoping for the traditional Addams family show it’s not there but it’s great for what it is. Can’t wait for a season 2. My only wish was Christina Ricci being morticia. But I’m glad she was on the show.

I think with Tylar from the bits and Peices I've seen talked about (I may watch this eventually, donno yet, but I may actually watch it to see if there's actual hints of this theory here) is that Tylar is suppose to be written to be an example of how sometimes people aren't trust worthy even when they're close to you. An example of how Narssistic Relationships do happen. It both worked and didn't work it sounds like because there's actually different forms of Narssistic Style behaviors but some of the most main ones are:
The Grandious (the typical that we know of in most movies and media and what people thinks is the most common but not actually)
the Benigne (the fun loving Narssisist that only care about fun, and the "least" harmful until you try to connect on a deeper level but can't because they tell you you're killing the vibe)
The Vurniable (The one I think my theory hinges on to see if they actually did it correcting and have to see for myself because it's the "Woe is me" kind that seems harmless but the more you try to help them the more they make you feel like crap because they blame the world for their unfairness lot in life),
the Maligiant (the most dangerous of them as it kinda combinds Mechivellism, and the one which actually causes a lot of abuse as they just don't care when the mask is down, you're a means to an ends),
the Mixture (where you have the mix and match of these verious kinds which is more likely to actually happen)
I think what they were *trying* to do with Tylar (again, a theory I need to confirm or deny when watching the show) is play with how vurniable Wendsday actually is with her mistrust with isolation of everyone and how very isolated she can become if prayed upon by someone who is actually a narssist and try to isolate her more. But Also another level of showing flaws of the other charaters as what the Theripist did isn't exactly... great either as it's combative and causes people to not do great in connecting. I'm sure she does mean well but it does cause more of a barrier for Wendsday to connect understandably. It honestly does sound like it would be a great story to watch as they're exploring a very untalked about point about vurnability and having a good social group that would help you through really rough patches of trying to understand the world.

Like I actually thought someone had killed Weems as well as Rowan and was filling in for Weems so as to take the most control over the Rowan incident as opposed to Weems just being a shapeshifter and making the 'Rowan just wanted to leave' story as believable as possible because she wanted to preserve the schools reputation.

I was surprised by (and liked) the darkness of the show, enjoyed Jenna Ortega, the friendships with Eugene and Enid, Enid's character, Of course I knew who the baddie was from episode One but it doesn't matter. I definitely agree with the idea that Wednesday was coded Neurodivergent. After recently rewatching the series Community, I totally got Abed vibes from Wednesday in that she completely struggles to read social cues, and understand Neurotypical expressions of emotion and how to reciprocate them properly. It's some thing she slowly starts to open up and begin to understand at the end of the season.
As for Crackstone and the magic staff stuff...maybe it was just me, but I felt it was implied that Crackstone himself was a witch or a practitioner of magic and got rid of the outcasts to deflect who the real witch was in the area. Maybe I'm wrong and I read that into the story when it was not there at all.

  • @nicolet572

I fully agree about the mystery and the ending. A lot of unanswered questions, a dumb ultimate villain, and a very unsatisfying conclusion. The showdown between Wednesday and Crackstone was prophesied 30 years in advance yet it only lasted 10 minutes and he got taken out with a couple random stab wounds by two girls with really interesting powers and skills who didn’t use any of those to beat him? I couldn’t be bothered to care. In my option Legacies does it better, it’s essentially the same show but the ultimate villain is actually threatening and difficult to defeat. The characters make real sacrifices and have to use all their skills and teamwork to save their school.

I honestly was also let down by the ending and the whole Joseph Crackstone narrative (honestly I just chalked Joseph's whole "I'm suddenly ok with magic and resurrection" as a part of the villain's hypocrisy, which is honestly not too far fetched from real world cults and other hyper extreme fanatics. Would've been nice if they had brought it up however: like if Wednesday brought up the hypocrisy as a sassy remark to Joseph & his followers and they had a whole line to reestablish "oh it's fine if I do it, but it's different if you do and that makes you a monster. The whole, "I'm the exception" mindset of things.)
Second: Yeah, the whole "Goody heals Wednesday" felt like a very messy wrap up.
I still think the monster was an ok plot point: more as a background event for Wednesday to solve. I felt like Wednesday plays a more morbid interest in murders and such like a very deadpan Sherlock Holmes: it's not so much the murder or the murder's backstory we care about but his display of intelligence (and in Wednesday's case, absolute lack of care for social restraints so she can get the job done + smarts) that makes it entertaining to watch. Kinda like as if she doesn't really care that people are murdered, it's just more of a fun brain exercise to her and the fact that she can't figure it out just yet is what's frustrating her more than anything else. I kind of wish they went even more with this angle because of how the Addams franchise has been. On that note, it would've been so cool if they had a more death/resurrection power/theme because of how nonchalant they are about death and murder, rather than the whole seer sight ability. I wish they had stuck more with the whole Addams being comfortable with death and gore, but explain it in a way that makes sense to us the viewers why they find that normal.
Like imagine: the whole Addams have a sort of Zombie, immortal/unkillable power and that's why they're so undisturbed by people dying/can't understand why people find it a scary thing. If we wanted to raise the stakes, we could make Wednesday grow close to people and learn that her powers are not absolute, making sure there's actual potential losses in the story.
Also wasn't a fan of the whole fact she's at odds with her family. I would get it if Morticia and Gomez was getting too soft in their old age (since Wednesday is a teenager now) and she finds that disgusting, like some sort of teenage angst faze. Again, could be explained by their inability to die: Morticia and Gomez actually are against killing strangers because they understand what it means from the mortal's perspective and can sympathize. Wednesday does not until she goes through this whole journey at Nevermore.
Regardless I do love the series Wednesday, and I just wanted to put in my 2 cents haha. xD
