- In this one, we perform a repair on an aluminum cast running board bracket. Boy, was this a fun one! This cast aluminum was terribly dirty. We used the new Miller Dynasty 300 to get the job done. We had to do a little machining on the milling machine to clean it up as well. We also added a new segment to the channel as called "Fabri-Haters". Hope you guys enjoy!

I have a full time job and i build custom furniture on the side. So that my wife can stay home and take care of my son with cerebral palsey. I am not a welder at all but i can make some really nice welds with a angle grinder and spray paint. I like your content and your morals. I don't respond to the negative comments or the "haters" on my channel as I feel they are just using click bate to get a rise out of me and I refuse to give them any of my energy. I also agree with you that there are a lot of them that are jealous. That or they just simply don't want to see someone get ahead in life through tenacity and hard work because it makes them have to think of their own shortcomings or lack of work ethic.
Luckily, I don't have that many that respond with negative or hateful comments, most are very positive and supportive. But there are those few .....
I am proud to support your channel as I feel we are like minded and I enjoy watching creative and "get it done" creators who share that mindset.
As for cast aluminum repairs, you're right, it's a crap shoot on the quality of the casting. I would have expected the Amp Research components to have been made out of slightly better casting though. As I was watching you prep for the repair I was going to suggest using a coarse fluted rotary burr but then you mentioned you had ordered a couple.
Have you tried using Tube Wax or something similar like grinder's grease on your bits and abrasives? It really does aid in preventing premature clogging of the abrasive pores and makes them last longer as well, just be sure to wipe thoroughly with acetone before welding. However, don't intermingle abrasives from aluminum to carbon steel if using Tube Wax or equivelent as it contaminates the material.
Also, have you ever tried using 4943 TIG rod for cast aluminum? It works very well. Just a suggestion.

Thank you for the support, I have not tried using wax, or grinder lube, I was worried that it might introduce more contaminants to the weld, but maybe it’s not much of an issue. @@Freedomfabrication777 as long as you clean the wax thoroughly it doesn't negatively effect the weld. It's a trade off between keeping the tool (or abrasive) clean and working efficiently but then making sure to completely remove any residual before welding.

Btw congrats on the new dynasty. I just got a used Miller syncrowave 350. I made a parts oven out of an old stainless steel propane grill I use to weld castings. Makes it easy to control pre and post heat. Also was gonna comment like others try dipping your burr in wd40 or wax. Thanks for sharing!

I'm not admitting to anything here . . . but I know a guy that might have caught an apron string in a grinder. Fortunately, it was a waist string so the grinder just hit me in the gut. Haha. I primarily repair beat dirty aluminum fishing boats in Alaska. I have found that when it comes to dirty aluminum and cast aluminum, a course burr bit on a die grinder, like a two flute one, and the kwiktool c7 bad blades on a 4 inch grinder work the best for cleaning and gouging any aluminum. The c7 bad blades look gnarly and dangerous but you just have to be careful like any tool. They wont blend in any contaminates into the material. Still love the channel! thanks for posting! 👍

It helps to keep the aluminum from gumming up the bur if you use air tools at slower speeds. Or if your milwaukke has a slow speed setting. Also if you are just finish dressing spray the bur with wd-40.

Great vid, as usual. Innovative way to deal with the keyboard cowboys!.... Curious if this damage on the AMP running board is common.... and when using the carbide bits, you seem to have mastered the dreaded "chatter".

Here's a tip to try for you, to help pull out impurities from within the steel, you may have at hand! Get your acetylene torch set flame not quite neutral, where you faintly see smoke on the tip of your flame. Smoke all the area you need to apply weld. Once well coated then set your flame neutral with a little more oxygen to show a tight flame wave slowly across area to be welded acetylene pulls oxygen out of the material and impurities to surface.

Couple things if you get yourself a small container and put some dish soap in it, and dip your carbide burr in it periodically it will help lubricate and stop the chip welding process, afterwards, you can just take warm water and wash it off. It works pretty good , also turn your bur speed down , you can also buy coated burrs and they do help a little bit, cast aluminum can be the worst, one thing that helps is to preheat it to at least 250°, if you’ve ever noticed your second bead always seems to run better, it’s because the metal is hot, also you don’t want to put a lot of amperage into the weld, or you will pull the impurities into the weld , Just enough to make it liquid, good luck I feel your pain, been there done that ,many times, also I love the Fabri-haters 👍

It’s your shop, your channel and your choice! I watch your channel for the welding content and to admire your shop. A little jealous, I might add. But, in a good way. You’ve obviously worked hard and made sacrifices to get it. I’m happy for you. As far as the negative Trump flag comment, I can’t imagine anyone hating Trump that bad, having the energy to weld anyway. A little tip for grinding aluminum: Beeswax strips (about 1/2x1x4” long). Just run the burr, disc or sanding pad over it lightly. Works great! Got that from the NBS Welding UA-cam channel. Near as I can tell, it doesn’t contaminate the aluminum.

How many hours did you spend on that job, and what did you charge? I always ask the person desiring the repair if they would consider just buying the replacement part rather than spending the time fixing the part, only to have it re-break due to casting impurities. That definitely wasn’t a moneymaker. That was one of those projects where there was way more work underneath the surface than you realized. That’s why I usually like to give the customer, a ballpark of what it will cost, and if I need to call them later and tell them, it will be a little more, then I’m not losing money. I would do this job again. I was up front with the customer on my hourly rate. Although cast is terrible to weld, sometimes the challenge is fun. I will say this, if it was my truck, I would’ve just ordered a new part, But that’s just me. Sometimes the customer sees it differently though. Thanks for watching!
Hobart makes a 4943 TIG wire for more strength. Easy running wire too. Not being critical

Have you ever used silicon, bronze, filler rod on Castle aluminum? It works nice. You don’t have the junk coming to the surface.
I have not, never on cast aluminum. Never seen that done before. I guess I may have to try that on a piece of scrap, and see how it goes.

Had a question on your Milwaukee die grinder I just bought mine used it one time 3 or 4 different arbors to grind and polish aluminum. And now the same arbors I used the first time won’t fit in the collet have you had any issues with your collet allowing any arbors to fit on mine seems like it’s stuck on the tightened aspect without the nut being tightened down or even on it thanks in advance

That’s a great question. I didn’t feel right charging an arm and a leg for it because it was one of those projects where it didn’t look as bad at first sight, but the more I dug into it, the worse it got. My cost for this one was one hour Shop rate. It was a lesson learner. Next time I will tell them my shop rate, and quote it at 1-3 hours depending on how it goes. It actually took me about 3 hours to complete. Thanks for watching!

Nice job on the repair. Definitely not an easy task. I spray wd-40 on my bits which seems to keep them semi ok, but doing that introduces it into the material, trade off I guess. You probably already know about it and it's kind of uncommon to have on hand, but if you can get a LB or so of ER4047 it can sometimes helps with welding some junky castings in the future because it was designed as a brazing rod and wets in at a lower melting point.
You did a awesome job and honestly probably went farther than 99% of fab shops out there willing to take a job like this on, by milling out back to a true 90 degree edge.

I have a trump flag hanging in my welding and fab shop. If a customer or someone doesn't like it they can go somewhere else. It shouldn't matter.
Fyi, amp research sells that bracket fairly cheap compared to the time invested in trying to fix it. Figured it's for a buddy and that's why your fixing it. I was taught to not use power tools such as a grinder/flap wheel on aluminum because it embeds the contaminates into the material even further. To always use a file in one direction. Cast is always filthy and a pain to weld. Let the heat pull the trash to the surface slowly before you start adding filler. My two cents. Keep up the good work. I love that dynasty! That's one hell of a machine. I'm more of an everlast user due to cost. #tigweldeverydamnday

I find it hard to believe that guys who probably own small shops that watch your channel would hate on your Trump flags. To say the current administration has any way helped small businesses, especially during Covid, isn’t being honest he’s just trying to stir shit up. I really like your channel and the flags.
Statistically speaking, I’m sure that’s the case. Most blue Collar, tradesmen, and small business owners know that economically, life was just better, and business was easier under the previous administration. No complaint obviously Little Neck back flat part there I almost wonder if a good piece of aluminum metal wouldn't be just as good to just sit on it, you have a deep weld on the back side of it, and then a nice plate fill up what crack you have grind it off smooth then maybe lay a plate on top of it, and that would give you all the strength you would need and obviously it's going to be under the truck so nobody would see it, it's just a suggestion I might would have done it that way and then again I might have done it exactly like you're doing it now I don't know, it had to be on my table to make that decision

Lol, I don’t get offended with that stuff. I’m not one of those guys that has to have tools only from tool trucks. I have 2 tool boxes that are Extreme Tools, and my machining tool box is a U.S. General. And for the money, I think it’s great.
Cast is the worst to work with, because the very point of cast is just to have filler solid piece of aluminum that is you know done with nothing but straight aluminum the point of cast is to save money and obviously to make parts that have a bunch of shapes and sometimes a lot of tubes that go through them like say a manifold gasket you know that has your gas and air mixture that runs through it but at the same time it's made up of a bunch of fillers with aluminum in it, it's just crappy material. When it comes down to it I mean it does the job for some things but for the most part it's just a solution to make parts cheap and fast commas it's not to make a good part and obviously and definitely not to give you any pure strong metal

Hey I got a lot of haters in my area. I’ve always been told if you don’t have haters you’re not doin something right lol. If they have something bad to say is bc they can’t do what your doin and I’m old school you got smacked for talking shit
That’s how I grew up. A lot of people today use the safety of their screen to say whatever they want. I don’t think that gonna change. I do think you’re correct, Anytime someone has haters, it’s because they’re putting themselves out there for others to be critical of. That’s just part of the gig. Thanks for watching!

@@Freedomfabrication777 I might have learned on the red machines, but the only red machine I own is an old AC 225 tombstone. My first MIG was a Hobart. I now have two PrimeWeld MIG machines, a PrimeWeld TIG machine and and Arc Captain MIG (they sent that one to me). I swear no allegiance to any particular color. :) I like the content, I've noticed those other banners in the past. If I based my viewing decisions on the political leanings of the "actors", there wouldn't be much left to watch. 😂 Appreciate you saying what needs to be said. It's OK to disagree, just do it respectfully.
