A person who had to have his diaper changed every time someone wrote his name down or when got a taste of his own medicine really doesn't sound like an anti-hero to me.
I kinda miss this types of location that they have to interact with the land. I guess it can get quite dangerous, but it adds to the camp life flavor.
It definitely got fluffier from then on out. Maybe it was too tough,
Africa was certainly too tough environment-wise. I liked Gabon's setiing tho.
@@gmsimon i think the outback was easily the worst. but i agree with OP that i miss the earlier seasons where there was an actual survival aspect to it and a lot was shown about how the people actually make do in such rough environments. but i guess it makes sense that the show had to evolve as pretty much every contestant past like season 6 had seen it and realized its more of a social game than anything,
@@veebee-sc4tp it wasn't even the outback. It was basically bushland. As an Australian that series annoys me. Should have been in the middle of the northern territory or western Australia where it's just desert and snakes lol.
I think he is a straight up hero who held high respect for the REALITY of the show. It wasn't considered a game show back then and it wasn't considered a "game". He treated it like real life and he respected that the best person should win the money since only ONE of them could. That was the code of Survivor to him. It was a tribe who ELECTED an ultimate winner.
Well I still think he was PARANOID and EGOTISTICAL as a leader. If he didn't freak out and get kelly voted off I would have liked him a lot more.
If he thought the best person should win, then he should've voted Boston Rob to win in All Stars. He's just bitter

Lex and Tom were the true "heroes" out there in Africa though. As soon as someone fell asleep on night time fire duty they immediately took over and split the duty for the rest of the time...Lex obviously went a little crazy/cranky from it. ^_^
They were pretty much doing this from before when Ethan fell asleep on night. He also was spearheading the tribe and so their fence probably got finished in time to keep them safe partly thanks to him...they had trouble finishing early thanks to their poor water situation. Obviously all of the factors together took quite a toll on his tribemates and two had to leave thanks to just straight up exhaustion...
...he got as far as he did thanks to the meta of the game back then which was find your true friends, those you want to win and can trust, and who you really believe in. It's too bad the game morphed into what it has because back then it was less of a game and more of a meaningful question...a DEEPER question of not who do I WANT to go, but who must go now for the betterment of mankind?! Lol. It was actual survival back then, not dangerous, more interaction with the locals and the wild life...
I highly respect the moves he made. I don't think he made dumb moves very often, he just lost control of the game because it got down to the nitty gritty and people were no longer honest with HIM.
Africa was the first season I watched from start to finish, and Lex was immediately my favorite player. It was great seeing the first "alt" player on the show become the narrator of the season, and represented his community really well. He got a raw deal in All-Stars, but he's still my favorite player of all time.
Lex is one of my favorite players of all time. If he didn’t get screwed over by production in the fallen comrade challenge at final 4 he could have gone on to win the game and cement himself as one of the most dominant winners of all time.
i met him as a kid (maybe age 5) and he was so sweet and so open ab his survivor experience. he will alway be one of my survivor favs
also big tom was a total gentleman i genuinely respected them way more after meeting them in person
He might have a bit of a polarizing reputation by the modern day fandom but for me, he's always been one of my favorites. I love that he was the first example of someone who was a big character that didn't really fit into either main archetype of hero or villain and for me, it was always compelling whenever he said something in a confessional which is something that a lot of my favorite contestants have in common. Its crazy to think about how close he is to winning in both seasons he was in if only certain things had played differently. All in all, a big reason why I enjoy Africa quite a bit.
Never knew he was almost 40. Always thought he was like 29 or 30.

I believe Lex is an example that strategy is not the most important part of the game.
I consider him a great player.
If he had won Africa or All -stars he'd be considered a top 5 player. His social game/aura was larger than life.
If he doesn't get dysentery then he wins Africa.
If he had kept Jerri, and voted out Amber then he wins All Stars.
its an example of how bad luck and one bad decision can change the history of the show. If things had broken differently Lex would be considered a clear cut top 5/10 all time player.
Having said that, his social game guarantees he'd make the merge about 95 out of 100 times.
However, if he'd won Africa, All-Stars may have been a completely different game for him as a previous winner.
Actually im gonna blame his Africa loss on the producers because at the final 4 immunity challenge (the fallen comrades one) he got a question right when the producers counted it wrong. Had he gotten that point he would have tied with Kim J and the tiebreaker could have changed the whole outcome of the season

Like obviously it was a bad move for him to not do it but he was not in a good spot, he destroyed his chances long before.

Agreed, he was the All Stars kingmaker based on the facts that he took out Ethan, Colby, and Himself (he should have known B Rob was NEVER gonna keep him, whether they were good friends at the time or not), thus paving the way for Rob to sweep immunities. By keeping Amber he also literally decided the winner in a different way. He was also strongly set up to win the season had he gotten rid of Amber since he would have had the numbers (and loyal ones at that) since he would have brought Tom over due to their pre-game alliance.
@@Drmaxis2 he screwed up big time in All-stars... and then played victim card and turned himself into a bitter hypocrit with the whoa is me you evil backstabber.... and got himself boo'd off the stage with jerri at the reunion
Lex brought a lot to both his seasons. His flaws were very human and I would much rather have someone who beings discussion and interesting flavor to the game than a bunch of contrived influencer wannabe types. What I appreciate about Lex is that he wasn’t trying to be a hero or a villain, he just was trying to play Survivor

Thank you! I really like to dive deep into these characters and really explore why decisions were made and how they affected the game. It really is eye opening in a lot of cases.
Lex is underrated
mostly because of how badly he blew it in all-stars.
Rob made him look like an idiot and then lex compounded his mistake with bittergrapes and the whoa is me act.

It was not a "game" back then and that's why the viewers were pouring in. It was a show about how people came together, stuck together, and rejoiced at the reward of crowning a winner. These are the seasons I watched as a kid...haven't seen the show since, didn't even know it was around...I hope Ethan can bring trust back to survivor, it's honestly the biggest theme it ever had going and the reason it did so well.

Sadly I have to admit that Lex was not the best strategist probably because of his emotions.. but man what a character he was! He had huge will to win this game, the biggest that we saw so far. Almost every move that he did showes it to us, that is also why he got so emotional. He tried to run whole season, he won a lot of challenges and he was really close to win it. Let's think.. if he is not sick at the final IC then he wins, probably takes Kim to the final two and wins season.
Also there was a huge mistake at the IC when there were only 4 left that you didn't mention: In the question about piercing there were 2 correct answers, one picked by Kim and one by Lex, shameful the production didn't know that and in the result Kim won the immunity where they should still play because of draw. So if he wins it (yeah whe've got a draw but now there is a chance for him to win) they vote off Kim and who knows what happens, he probably had a chance with both Ethan and Tom...
I admire his will to win so hard and I think he was amazing character.

I think Lex wins Africa if he won that last immunity challenge no matter which person he decides to take to the end
for sure. its unfortunate he got sick when he did, that likely cost him a million, but that's part of the game.
I watched seasons 3 and All Stars live when they aired and for some reason never found myself just naturally, organically rooting for him in either season. In fact, he was eventually an obstacle to Boston Rob in All Stars, and I WAS rooting for Rob so I kinda hated Lex then. In retrospect I appreciate him a little more, good character, pretty good survivor player overall
Pre merge he was a strategic hero, post he was a dumb anti hero
If it weren't for that T-Bird vote, he may have been a smart strategic player overall. A lot of those dumb's came in during the two follow up episodes to her vote.
Gabriel Camilleri Samburu could have still took avantage of the game after Brandon’s flip, had they voted out Big Tom at F8. They would have tied the voted between Brandon and Tom and Tom would have went home because he had more previous votes.

Lex is a legend. shame he's become forgotten over the years.
Lex was a good player, but he made some pretty big mistakes. Voting out Clarence was really shortsighted in my opinion (he's not going to win every single challenge--just vote out one of the Samburus and add to the numbers advantage). And his reaction to getting one stray vote was one of the biggest overreactions in Survivor history. Kelly might not have liked him, but I don't think she was planning to flip at that point until he gave her no choice. Lex is lucky that Brandon made one of the dumbest votes ever, or he would have finished in ninth place.

In what way did Lex not act entitled judging from the way he openly overreacted to receiving one stray vote? Like he is entitled to receive zero votes??
It would be great if Survivor gave more camera time to interesting guys like Lex and Coach, rather than heartthrobs like Colby

I understand why they can't do locations like this anymore. It's way too dangerous for people and even necessities like water is potentially a difficulty to get around. Ithink it was also the most expensive season when you compare by inflation cause they needed alot more people to keep the survivors safe from animals. They got close to real danger that season even more than usual. Still a great season all and all. But we're probably never going back to mainland africa again.
Lex should have at least gone to the finals. He carried his alliance all the way.

Anti-Hero works for Lex, but it is yet to be seen if another character will fill this archetype.
@@OnceUponAnIsland Well, maybe the term should be reserved for instances where a character has about an equal amount of heroic and villainous moments. In this video for example a lot of the antiheroic moments could be placed in the hero and villain categories. It probably would result in an equal distribution, thus characterizing Lex as an anti-hero. I see this happening for someone like Terry Deitz who had both heroic and villainous moments.

Eh in the early 00’s they were more begrudgingly accepted, I’d say they didn’t become mainstream until I’d say when tattoo competition shows like ink master was aired.

Recently rewatched this season and Lex is paranoid af. It takes only one small suggestion for him to turn on Kelly and vote her off. While he tries to be the straight forward nice guy, he’s so easily ruffled when he gets a vote and begins to suspect all his allies.

I think Lex trying to be honest with Clarence isn't as dumb as it seems. Trying to make the jury like you is important and that means not burning them on theway out. And CLarence is firstjuror so he can poison the well for the rest. He should have waited one more tribal before going after Clarence cause by removing him it makes it a close split a flip vote could damage things, so I think they jumped the gun there. Classic power group eats eachother and underdogs take advantage kind of problem that happens sometimes. Thankfully that didn't happen and Lex got through the rest and continually saved himself to get to finale, but not to finale two
Lex though really lost his momentum when he wrongly had Kellyvoted out and really began to lose his mind about an extra vote against him. Along with some aggressive moves done not as subtly as he should it really turned the idea of him aroundfor most people who initially felt he was ok and a good leader. His paranoias got the better of him and began to ruin his social over time. Which only got worse as he kept winning cause some people found it hard to even be happy for his wins.
Still Lex seemed like a good guy, just let his emotions get the better of him at the wrong time.... and he even annoyed the jury by total accident reffering to the vote out walk as the walk of shame, and then didn't try to apologize.

@@OnceUponAnIsland Yes, I can see that being the case, since Lex could definitely rub some the wrong way. Ethan was much better socially. Still believe though that Ethan rode Lex's coattails to the final and his win.
Hmmm. Who played the better game then? Tina or Ethan? I think the better argument can be made for Tina. Although in many polls she still ranks behind Ethan in "Survivor" winners ranked overall.

Not one person said anything to the other person who also had some beans umm 🤔💭 why is that? & did yall also notice that Clarence never raised his voice or yelled back at the guys that were belittling him, cuz if he did he woulda been labeled as extremely aggressive, crazy, abrasive, violent just to name a few right before they write his name down at tribal council & vote him off. I especially don't like Big Tom talking down to Clarence, cuz Big Tom is a closeted bigoted racist & it's clear for me to see 👀 so clear that even Stevie Wonder & Ray Charles both can also clearly see it too.
I do see what you’re getting at but I’ve gotta point out- the person he split the beans with was sick, which is why they opened the can of beans. Clarence was not sick, which is why his tribe mates were perturbed that he also ate the beans.

Lex is overrated. And what happened to him in all stars just proves how he is bad in reading people. Not a great strategist in Africa and even worse in all stars. But he is a funny character and a nice guy when is not being totally blind by his ego.

Lex was not smart during All Stars, but to be fair, neither was anyone else. It is amazing to me that nobody from an "all star" cast could actually bring themselves to get rid of Rob, someone with a proven track record of being deceptive and selfish, yet a bunch of randoms from Season 4 neutralized him pre-jury.
