  • Miguel is in the final High School stretch which means we don't have large amounts of time for long form overland travel... BUT! We loaded up his 1978 Toyota Hilux and headed for the hills. It was just a quick weekend trip, but it provided plenty of time to connect with my son and the outdoors.
Thank you for watching! And don't forget to run what ya brung!

I can't believe how much Miguel has grown. It's good to see he has that adventurous spirit. To top it off, he's a Hilux owner. I remember when he was younger, he was cooking up some steak. I guess he kept practicing. Ha!

I was 15 the first time I drove a Hilux. It was made into an RV camper, drove it up into the hills outside of Salt Lake City. Very fond memories.

My 1st/2nd truck was a Goldens mustard color hilux.
You can put spring lift nuts in the front and 6 inch shackle lift in the rear it will set on 31-33 inch tires. 70's dodge rims will also fit it if you need to step up to 15" rims.
Some days I miss that truck. Wish I had pitures

Reservoirs in the Sierra are generally kept at 50-70% of capacity in the fall and winter in preparation of massive snows and subsequent spring melts.

Oh Iowa Hill Rd. Yeah, definitely no gold in the American River. I am over 20 years removed from that area but it's beautiful. I also saw a the location history mentioning bowman lake. I spent a lot of time out in that area, one time I was in an old Ford Escort, picking lines and exploring. I am sure some of those roads are worse of now but in my older age I have probably gone camping less now that I have a tacoma and 4runner compared to my younger years in front wheel drive cars, especially my old Accord lol. Camping is something that really does not take much at all, you just lose some creature comforts, but the time at camp and exploring make up for that.

I think so many people want to do this, but are too intimated by all the YT experts with over priced/over engineered rigs.
This is a great video and should be the start to an entire series showcasing people "overlanding" in average, everyday vehicles to prove it really doesn't matter what you drive.

Very cool video. Having sold my Jeep due to it needing an engine, I have my AWD Nissan Rogue commuter and my wife’s minivan. I once took our minivan up a rough trail at Huntington Lake, CA, but got the Jeep in later years to do it correctly. This video reminds me that just because the Jeep is gone it doesn’t mean I can’t do cool stuff. Thanks for the kick in the pants.

Watching this vid reminds me of how little I used to need to get out there back in the mid-90s compared to now. Mostly because I didn’t know what REI was and UA-cam wasn’t a thing. Looking at that old Yoda makes me think of a Ford Maverick and how I tell folks it is the perfect truck for most users needs.

LOVED this. Looks like he is loving the little truck. I had 2 of those in the past. and 4 of the 78-83 trucks. only 2 were 4x4. I drove the little 2wd's everywhere and hauled all my camping/fishing stuff just fine. If it is the 20r engine it is bullet proof. 18rc engines are almost just as reliable. If he has an 8in rear axle, " G " code. it is pretty cheap to put in a Posi unit for more traction. if it is a 7.5 rear axle," F " code. they are a bit more expensive, but still out there. Would love to see the little truck in more of the videos. Thanks for sharing.

Reservoirs have a winter and a summer pool level with the winter level being much lower but I don't know why.

    • @chshrkt
      @chshrkt 7 місяців тому +2

The winter level is lower to handle runoff from winter storms.

Maybe the lake has. A hydro plant on it taking power.

  • @btejada75

Perhaps they lowered the lake level in anticipation of new winter storms so the dam doesn't overtop?

Oh that looks like a good spot to pan. I like a river with some character. You'll know the gold, it’s legit heavy as they say. It’s actually pretty hard to throw out of the pan if you do it with any sense at all. How bout those.three.words though?
