There probably isn't a video on UA-cam that's better for me to analyze (and enjoy the heck out of) -- with an extensive background in both the classical and acapella worlds, I knew this was one I couldn't miss, so thank you for sending me suggestion after suggestion just to make sure it didn't slip through the cracks. Is there anything from VoicePlay that I still need to check out? I'm planning to do VoicePlay double-features in the future 👀
A Night on Bald Mountain is probably the most prominently well-known (and notorious) segment from Disney's Fantasia, where they did fully animated short features to an array of classical pieces. If you've never seen it, the whole thing is worth a watch for fans of Classical Music and classic Disney, BUT if you want something badass, A Night on Bald Mountain is some of the darkest and edgiest sh!t Disney has ever put on the screen. When you're a kid who loves the macabre, that junk is FORMATIVE! Basically, a demon's evil hell-orgy in Disney's golden age animation. It is AMAZING and still holds up to this day. It is followed by a very solemn and transcendent rendition of Ave Maria and the two pieces flow from one to the other in a way that makes you feel some kinda way. As a kid, I didn't understand what I was feeling, but I knew it was profound.
As a member of Studio Brev I can attest that it is the GREATEST studio on planet Earth. I absolutely love Danny, Jenn and all the people in the studio. Also, LOVE your reactions Peter! They always give me a new insight into the music and I pick up on things I hadn't before. Much love!
Layne and Tony hauled in 34 real trees and another 10 hand-painted tree trunks to make up the forest. Besides this, they used it to film a couple Villians Lair episodes and another project to be released later in the fall. (They had to bug bomb regularly after one of their Villians Lair actors started pulling caterpillars off his wig) Toward the end of this piece, Layne added a chant. Although it was completely made up by him, he said he took inspiration from the talking trees in Disney’s Tiki Room, so it has a vaguely Hawaiian feeling to it.
I think I've never seen such a real world example of the heart-eyes emoji than Peter in _several_ sections of this video, but possibly most intensely after Rachel's octave riff in In the Hall of the Mountain King, as he processes what just happened while also the song goes into hyperdrive. I thoroughly enjoyed this video.
Layne called this passion project "Mountain King 2.0." The trolls are now officially know as the Grundels, their first names currently being their colors. ""At the end of the In the Hall of the Mountain King video, they ended up banished by the Violet Warrior Queen to the Underworld. Fortunately, Green-Grundel, the clevel one, found a way out. Of course, he brought his friends with him. When the Grundels reappear, they are in a new and mysterious part of the forest where they encounter the Dazzling White Witch." While the VP characters are the same, there are differences in costuming and makeup, most notably with Layne and Geoff. This is a new "spooky forest" set at PattyCake Productions that has been filling up their studio since February (and very recently taken down). But they've used it for several projects. Yes, that is the classic Wilhelm Scream during the Dance of the Hours section. Both the Dance of the Hours and A Night on Bald Mountain can be found in Disney's original Fantasia movie. The color of the fire shows who is casting the spell. for example, during the Can Can segment. the music shifts from major to minor as Rachel reclaims the book from Eli, undoing his spell. You can see his green smoke collapsing back into the fire. At the end, she conjures up everyone's colors in the smoke to banish them. The music choices are: Toccata and Fugue in D Minor - J. S. Bach Eine kleine Nachtmusik - Mozart Habanera from ''Carmen Suite No.2'' - Georges Bizet Symphony No 5 in C Minor - Ludwig Van Beethoven The Blue Danube Waltz - Johann Strauss II Dance of the Hours - Ponchielli Für Elise - Beethoven Thus Spoke Zarathustra - Richard Strauss Orphée aux enfers, French Can Can ACT 5 - Offenbach Romeo and Juliet (Fantasy Overture) - Tchaikovsky A Night on Bald Mountain - Mussorgsky Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, "In the Hall of the Mountain King" - Grieg
Love you reactions, Peter! You are so absorbing! What's funny about Classical Chaos is the Wilhelm Scream isn't in the song, just the video...but I always hear it in the song anyway.💙
Man, been waiting anxiously for this one. So many little Easter eggs throughout. Amazing how they can tell a story without using words and it is clearly understood. Phenomenal work on this one.
It's always so enjoyable to watch your reactions to VP productions, thus I've beenP WAITING for your R&A of this one knowing you'd love it, and you did not disappoint, thank you! 😊 DOUBLE FEATURES of VP? Can't wait!!
Yey! You're back with VoicePlay and the Trolls are back (Grundels, Trolls, I call them Trolls ; I'm Norwegian. 😂) and with one of Layne's best arrangements in my opinion. Since you been busy, Peter; VoicePlay too have been putting out so much great (Who am I kidding; it's all great!) stuff. 'The way you make me feel (MJ) with the one and only DeeJay Young and 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' (BT) with the wonderful Ashley Diane is the two more recent ones. But, there are so many mini's that I'm sure you could do a whole day with only VoicePlay. Please do whatever song you like, Peter; I'm sure it will be great, and I'm really looking forward to this one in particularly because it's right in your wheelhouse! :D
Luckily I had already watched the VP video many many times. I so enjoyed just watching your face during this video! The pure enjoyment was infectious, and I shared your amazement all throughout the video. I was so pleased to see your video post on my YT feed; I knew I would enjoy the experience! 😁
One of the best R&As recently! But then, VP always gives so much to work with! Between their performance and your reaction, there's no way this wasn't going to be a great time!! Well done!
Finally! I don't watch all your videos (they're a little long to be justified as a "break" from work), but I cheerfully gave up half an hour of sleep for this one! I'm sure you've verified your facts now that the reaction/analysis video is safely recorded, edited, and posted, so you don't need me to list the musical sources and composers, or to tell you whose fiendish brain spawned the arrangement. Everything is listed under the original video on VoicePlay's channel. This was time well spent. It couldn't be otherwise, with a combination of VP and PB!
Waited so hard for your reaction! Finally - and no disappointment! So much fun, such excellent singing and acting. You will like the next one coming... 😂🎉❤ thank you!!😊
The pure joy on your face listening to this lightened up my day, stuck in bed with my first bout of Covid. I love your musical analysis. All my music groups started their new seasons this week, and I'm missing my musical "fix," so this cheered me up. Peace and good health to you, Peter. Can't wait for TBG's new EP.
I've been waiting for this one!! I was so excited for you to get to the Für Elise part and I was not disappointed! This was such a fun reaction/analysis and it made me feel less bad for recognizing all these pieces but not knowing their names. 😂 Classical Chaos indeed! ❤❤
One of my first thoughts after watching this on Patreon was, “Oh wow this is awesome, Peter Barber is going to love this.” Been looking forward to your analysis to see what you pick up on. BTW congrats on 200k subscribers.
I love watching reactions to this video, especially from people with musical knowledge and backgrounds! Everyone has a slightly different take on it - and with VoicePlay (and Layne's arrangement), there's never a lack of fun and interesting stuff to talk about! Glad you reacted to it, Peter - it was nice seeing you have so much fun in an R&A!
The charasmatic voice has the track list as Laine sent her a copy before she done her reaction to classic chaos as she had just done a interview with him.
16:00 switching voices in video -- This always reminds me of the scene near the end of Singin' in the Rain, where Debbie Reynolds is reluctantly singing behind a curtain while the "star" is lip-syncing in front. Then Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor raise the curtain to reveal all to the audience.
You're right - without access to VP's amazing arrangers, I'm certain they would not go as far as they have. It's such an unerappreciated artform and they do it so very well. Thank you for a fun return to VP! I enjoyed watching your face enjoying this so much. Also, thank you for pointing out subtleties that would be lost on my damaged ears without you & other musician reactors pointing them out ❤ I was an orchestral and chiral specialist, and I sympathise entirely with your naming problem, except it's arias & choruses I can't name😂 Dangit there were a lot of things I wanted to reply to, but as usual, Voiceplay are Such A Lot that by the time it ends, each section has obliterated the previous thoughts
@@zarasha8220 ... yes? Sorry I am in the zombified postdrome stage of migraine and text barely exists nevermind subtext. I think it makes them even more amazing and talented and jawdroppingly outrageous. And if their arranging weren't so good, their other talents couldn't shine so very much? And also thay arranging is a much less glamorous artform that deserves as much attention as songwriting. Overexplaining myself, see subtext is a delusion, and honestly not wanting to flame anyone.
Voiceplay double features??? I may have died and gone to heaven. Their two most recent were The Way You Make Me Feel and Total Eclipse of the Heart. Would love to see you react and analyze either one or both of them. The next one.... out of sight!
Great analysis to one of my favorite pieces they’ve done recently. But my favorite so far is the recent one they did with DeeJay Young -Michael Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel. DeeJay was the perfect guest for this one, and the arrangement has been slowed down so it’s more of a sultry sexy sound. The one that is out on the Patreon page right now is spectacular. For your next interview/analysis you might consider doing it with Eli. He has started becoming more active in the (audio) production end of it. He has always been involved on the technical end, but now he’s starting to do more arranging. He has done a couple of arrangements on his own as well as arranging on several with Layne (I believe). But you might have a hard time getting any spare time with him since he’s a relatively new daddy as well.😊
I said in the Patreon when this was first released that this/yours was the reaction I couldn’t wait to see after how much you loved in the hall of the mountain king!
Same with Carmen. It´s also the only Opera I can listen in one sitting, instead of arias or part of arias. Heck, when at home after the fireworks of New Years Eve/ Day., my parents and sister went to bed. I stayed awake and watched the 1984 Carmen movie on tv.
I'm half surprised that you didn't get to this one sooner! It really is an amazing piece, though! Thank you for talking about it, I've been so curious to hear your take on it!
Hey Peter, Big fan of Swedish fusion trio Dirty Loops here! Since you’re bringing so much know-how to the wide world of singing, I figure you would LOVE listening to Dirty Loops. Their vocalist Jonah Nilsson calls many of music’s greats amongst his admirers, notably Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Brian McKnight and Quincy Jones. You can pretty much pick any song of theirs, but some especially showcase Jonah’s incredible vocals: “Breakdown” and “Hit Me”. I would absolutely love for you to do a reaction and analysis video on those, or any other Dirty Loops/Jonah Nilsson song. Thanks 🙏
Listening to this reminded me of that Warner Brothers bugs Bunny and Elmer fudd cartoon where they did all the different musical pieces. I believe even some of the ones that were in here we're also done in the same cartoon. This is absolutely so much fun I can't wait to see what they do with another version of this. And as usual Mr Barber you did a wonderful job bringing it to us and we also have so much fun watching you enjoy the music Ride along with us.
@@Broomrider1492 yep, once someone pointed that out I can’t “unhear” it 🤣. Layne did a really good job of mimicking Geoff, especially in the first notes, but the tone is just ever so slightly different if you listen closely. It also serves as a good reminder that Layne actually has a larger range than Geoff does because he can use some beatboxing techniques to go as low as Geoff does, but has access to higher notes (I believe his highest note is an C#6) corrected from Rtsbass range video
I would agree to go see Carmen, it's great. My first opera was Aida set in the ruins of the Roman Baths when I was visiting my sister in Germany for the summer. Her best friend and I went to Rome and they had horses and chariots running around on the stage. Congrats on A1. Toccata and Fugue in D Minor - J. S. Bach Disney's Fantasia used this for the opening of the movie in 1940 Eine kleine Nachtmusik - Mozart Used in The Scarlet Pimpernel 1939 Habanera from ''Carmen Suite No.2'' - Georges Bizet in Disney/Pixar UP also in Trainspotting Symphony No 5 in C Minor - Ludwig Van Beethoven in Breakfast Club, Austin Powers, Howard's End The Blue Danube Waltz - Johann Strauss II 2001: A Space Odyssey and Disney's The Jungle Book Dance of the Hours - Ponchielli Disney's Fantasia hippos do ballet Für Elise - Beethoven Rosemary's Baby 1968, Patch Adams, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Django Unchained Thus Spoke Zarathustra - Richard Strauss 2001: A Space Odyssey Orphée aux enfers, Frensh Can Can ACT 5 - Offenbach Little Mermaid, Moulin Rouge Romeo and Juliet (Fantasy Overture) - Tchaikovsky V for Vendetta A Night on Bald Mountain - Mussorgsky Disney's Fantasia Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, "In the Hall of the Mountain King" - Grieg Night at the Museum, Needful Things.
I can’t agree enough about Carmen as your intro to opera. SUCH great music, and you really don’t need to know French to get what’s going on. Hmmm. Eric Holloway? Elliott Robinson? I guess Tim Storms could nail it easily, but somehow I don’t see him coming aboard. Can BigBrev hit an F1 in chest? Loved this reaction!!!
You are such a Disney fan and love Don Giovanni. How could you miss the Bach Toccata and Fugue in D Minor or The Dance of the Hours or Night on Bald Mountain (all used in Fantasia) Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik?😂
Carmen was the first opera I have ever seen. So, yes, this turned me on to opera. I wonder if VoicePlay did a rendition of "Un Nessun Dorma". One of my favorites.
Peter, listen to when Layne is handing the book to Rachel...I think he is saying, "for my mama." Do you hear that? He started violin at age 4, which screams classical training to me and, I think- but no one agrees, that this was his bow to his mother for getting him started and all her years of love and support. The only other place there is a word is at the end when Rachel sings, "done," to my ears, anyway.
I have a playlist, of this, and performances (or arrangements, or in one case a parody) of all the individual works that it quotes from, here: ua-cam.com/video/RxvbwvJrzQw/v-deo.html I didn't know the names of all of them either, until VP did this. I knew the *big* big ones (BWV 565, Eine Kleine, Symphony #5, Fur Elise), plus Night on Bald Mountain, and of course as a VoicePlay fan I obviously knew Mountain King; and I correctly _guessed_ Blue Danube (though I wasn't sure until I checked). I did _recognize_ all of the melodies as being familiar melodies, except for the Tchaikovsky, which for some reason I had never encountered before, though I promise I have listened to more of his work than just the Nutcracker; I had just missed that specific one for some reason, until it was in this. I did know that the horn/tympani piece (Zarathustra) had been used in the 2001 sound track, and that it was a pre-existing piece of music (the entire sound track of that movie is pre-existing pieces of music), but I didn't know the name of it, until it showed up here. EDM Fur Elise: Yes, please. Maybe with some techno bits thrown in as well, and just a bit of the prelude, partita #3 in E, perhaps as a bridge? Just spitballing here.
As a Tolkien geek and Jackson's LOTR movies fan, I can confirm that sounded pretty much the same as the Wilheim Scream used in The Two Towers' battle of Helm's Deep lol
I think this is pulled from one of the Hooked on Classics arrangements. They were awesome back when. (I had the vinyls...when they were the only options. ;) )
Peter, for another a cappella group covering classical music (with an amazing Rob Dietz arrangement), please check out Kings Return covering Schubert's Ave Maria -- sung in a stairwell. Kings Return are incredibly talented singers, Grammy-nominated in 2022 for a song from their debut album.
It’s actually Night on Bald Mountain, but the Mario theme sounds very similar to the start of the song! I think that Koji Kondo took inspiration from that song and Flight of the Bumblebee when writing the Castle theme.
Please check out Australia’s most loved and unique voice. Jimmy Barnes. Check out either stone cold with Joe bonnamassa and Jimmy Barnes. Or Jimmy Barnes band Cold Chisel doing a cover of wild thing. He has one of the most powerful voices you will ever hear

In the air tonight, Whiskey in the jar, the way you make me feel, golden hour, I cant make you love me, and superstition.
I think the old phantom of the opera would be a fun reaction for you, given your love for VP's EDM side....
A warning, if you do shorts: their super mario 2 is excellent in every way. Inclusing, unfortunately, its ability to earqorm the goddang out of you.

I'm informed that Cesaer's bass steal is Layne, not Geoff. I love how everyone is looking scared at the end and Geoff is just bopping along. LOL

You can pretty much pick any song of theirs, but some especially showcase Jonah’s incredible vocals:
“Breakdown” and “Hit Me”.
So fun!
Would you ever do a collab song with VP? What song(s) would you like to do with them?
When Cesar steals voices it's not Geoffs'. It's Laynes doing the voice over bass you hear.
S. Bach Disney's Fantasia used this for the opening of the movie in 1940
Eine kleine Nachtmusik - Mozart Used in The Scarlet Pimpernel 1939
Habanera from ''Carmen Suite No.2'' - Georges Bizet in Disney/Pixar UP also in Trainspotting
Symphony No 5 in C Minor - Ludwig Van Beethoven in Breakfast Club, Austin Powers, Howard's End
The Blue Danube Waltz - Johann Strauss II 2001: A Space Odyssey and Disney's The Jungle Book
Dance of the Hours - Ponchielli Disney's Fantasia hippos do ballet
Für Elise - Beethoven Rosemary's Baby 1968, Patch Adams, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Django Unchained
Thus Spoke Zarathustra - Richard Strauss 2001: A Space Odyssey
Orphée aux enfers, Frensh Can Can ACT 5 - Offenbach Little Mermaid, Moulin Rouge
Romeo and Juliet (Fantasy Overture) - Tchaikovsky V for Vendetta
A Night on Bald Mountain - Mussorgsky Disney's Fantasia
Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, "In the Hall of the Mountain King" - Grieg Night at the Museum, Needful Things.
💙🩵💙🩵 Been waiting for this one!!😊😊😊😊
I can’t agree enough about Carmen as your intro to opera. SUCH great music, and you really don’t need to know French to get what’s going on.
Hmmm. Eric Holloway? Elliott Robinson? I guess Tim Storms could nail it easily, but somehow I don’t see him coming aboard. Can BigBrev hit an F1 in chest?
Loved this reaction!!!
Thank you Mason
3 of the songs you had trouble with were featured in Disney's Fantasia from 1940....>^^
You are such a Disney fan and love Don Giovanni.
They are chanting something near the end but can't make out the words.
She’s either saying’Dne’ or maybe ‘Ta-Da’
Typo - ‘Done’ or ‘Ta-Da’
Layne siad there were 126 tracks used for this recording
I LOVE when Peter reacts to Voiceplay and Geoff. Do you have Geoff's latest in the queue (Big Iron)?
I have a playlist, of this, and performances (or arrangements, or in one case a parody) of all the individual works that it quotes from, here: ua-cam.com/video/RxvbwvJrzQw/v-deo.html
I didn't know the names of all of them either, until VP did this.
Cesar doing the can-can dance....
As a Tolkien geek and Jackson's LOTR movies fan, I can confirm that sounded pretty much the same as the Wilheim Scream used in The Two Towers' battle of Helm's Deep lol
Peter teasing us at 9:30 is not fair
Totally teasing us.
The Wilhelm Scream was recorded by actor Sheb Wooley (singer of Purple People Eater)
Thank! I like your analyses. I hope you did this one
Sante Fe Opera is gorgeous..
With you reacting to this, we ate at 3 out of the 4 people I couldn't wait to watch the reaction video of this medley
I immediately thought of Eric Holloway for the low E on the upcoming EP…that would be insane
I have been waiting for your reaction to this song lol
FYI: Voiceplay JUST released a 1 second flash preview of their 2024 Halloween video on Patreon.
Love your analysis
I think this is pulled from one of the Hooked on Classics arrangements. They were awesome back when. (I had the vinyls...when they were the only options. ;) )
In the very beginning of this, was the resolution chord a picardy third?
I can't wait until you do their Halloween video "Thriller" it is absolutely phenomenal.
The one you just stared at the screen confused at 19:50 is from Mario, when you're in a Bowser dungeon
It’s actually Night on Bald Mountain, but the Mario theme sounds very similar to the start of the song! I think that Koji Kondo took inspiration from that song and Flight of the Bumblebee when writing the Castle theme.
Much fun.... I did want to reach into my monitor and nudge the camera a little though
That was awesome ❤❤
Im not well informed of the names of classical music but i love it ❤❤ i listen to it 🤩
Thk u Peter
Es ist einfach toll, was die können! Leider ist die Google Übersetzung teilweise recht dumm, aber trotzdem hat es mir sehr gefallen! Danke!
As a person called Elise, I lost my absolute shit when I heard the dubstep
If you love the artwork from this piece, the T-Shirt is better! It features charactures of each of them. Way cool!
