P-8A Poseidon: The RAF's submarine hunter

- The Royal Air Force's maritime surveillance and patrol aircraft - the Poseidon P-8 - has been busy since the new submarine hunter fleet was completed last year.
Known by the RAF as the Poseidon MRA1, the long-awaited replacement for the venerable Nimrod has a varied role, from anti-submarine warfare operations to surveillance to search and rescue.

Went on it with RAFAC at RIAT a few weeks ago. Incredibly impressive experience.
Superb aircraft. We just need twice as many of them
Yes I agree to rescue Asylum seekers in the English channel.
Whistle of admiration!!!
The P-8 can also use Harpoon anti ship missiles.
And JASSM
I dont think we operate those just yet but i could be wrong . Either way P8 is a fantastic future proof platform .
@@Husker5454 The Royal Navy has used Harpoon missiles for over 30 years. I don't think the RAF has ever used them however.
@SCscoutguy
Harpoon has been used by the RAF for well over 30 years.
@@Louis-ej1lx You are right. I just looked it up and it looks like they used them on the Nimrod. I always have to remember that the RAF flies the UK's MPA's and not the Navy.
Fond memories of sitting on top of Gib, watching the Nimrods take off below me.
Thank You so much
I think you didn't mention that Norway have purchased five P-8, replacing the P-3, and that the US, UK and Norway is now cooperatiing on this platform. The P-8 replaced the P-3 from mid 2023.
And New Zealand now have four P8A Poseidon's - the last one was just delivered.
At the time of the Falklands War the Maritime Nimrod fleet consisted of 48 aircraft, today the Maritime fleet does not even make up a Squadron of 12.
Remember the U.K. coastline alone is 3000 miles long, and that’s without long range or deployments to Gibraltar, and Falklands islands.
I know modern Maritime Aircraft can do more today, but just 8 aircraft ?
We can't even stop small boats arriving across the channel...
@@user-zh9kc7tw4n We can. The Conservative Party choose not to while pretending that they want to stop the boats. The widening of work visa's to more foreigners proves this.
@@user-zh9kc7tw4n The Royal Navy can't legally go out and sink inflatable boats in the channel mate.
I don't know what the solution is, but it's kind of insulting to expect the Forces to break International Law for you.
@@tsubadaikhan6332 Erm... what's Legal or Lawful about Illegal Immigration...? It's an invasion and the UK Government has a Legal and Statutory Duty and Obligation to PROTECT the PEOPLE of this once Great Nation.
@@tsubadaikhan6332 It's France's fault, they end up there and let them leave in whatever way possible, as long as they're out of France they don't care.
Do our (RAF) A330's Voyager's have a refuelling boom as well as drogue's ? I don't see a probe for a drogue (basket) on the P-8 ( and also presumably the E-7 Wedgetail we are getting to replace the E-3's) , as most of our aircraft use a probe for air to air refuelling or are we using USAF KC-135/KC-10/KC-46 with their booms to air to air refuel?
If I remember correctly, the Australians' KC30 (the Airbus tanker) has both boom and drogue refueling capabilities. The USAF's new tankers (KC46) also have both systems. Older USAF tankers have mostly boom, where the boom can be rigged for drogue, and some have both systems.
Boom is better for quick transfers and large transfers of fuel. In the USA, the USAF uses boom for everything, except helicopters. The US Navy and USMC use the drogue for most things.
The P8A has a refueling connection for a boom above the cockpit.
They do not. It was discussed at the time they were ordered and a decision was taken not to spend the money. So the RAF is entirely dependent on Allies (=USAF) to refuel these.
What is Chewbacca doing in the captain's chair?!
I hope this new aircraft is a worthy successor to the Mighty Hunter, Nimrod! Spent a fair amount of time in the bomb bay, anyone know if the P8 is less hazardous to your scalp?😆
For anyon thats interested you can go round the Nimrod at manchester airport
Nice, I have had the pleasure of being flown on board a Nimrod MR2 out of RAF Kinloss back around 2002, thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It would be great to have a tour on one of these again for old times sake.
RNZAF also recently received their fist P-8 I believe.
They’ve received all 4 they ordered
New Zealand received the preferred nation status, P8-A variant. Only India gets the P8-I variant which is a dialed down version.
@@ReneChewbaka lol according to Boeing website India p8 got addition sensor as request by indian government 😂 ignorant cow total 16 and another 6 on order largest after USA
No mention of other nations users include more than just the UK, US, India and Australia. Other operators include New Zealand, Norway and South Korea with order for future nations from Germany & TBC for Canada.
How can India be trusted or afford it
@@casparthomas4775 I don't know why you ask me that, I guess money talks.
@@sovkhan4359 Probably down to money like most things.
@@casparthomas4775 afford? They are a very rich country.
The other countries don't have those, so those do not operate those.
Airbus (Germans and French) were talking about making a rip-off Airbus version for themselves and the Euro marketplace. That would not happen until 2030s, though.
Ahhh also flying with the RNZAF 😁
Beautiful planes
*That is great 👏, so it will be used to rescue Asylum seekers in the English channel.*
Looks like this will be the replacement for Canada's aging but still capable Aurora.
Does it have air-to-air capability for defence?
Air superiority fighters probably escort it awac aswell to see if anything is around
The RAF didn't buy enough, 9 is insufficient for the expanse of oceans around the UK. Three squadrons / 27 would be closer to what we need.
And if the UK had bought more, you'd be complaing that you pay too much tax
@@dave4728 I wouldn't - ex job!!
This aircraft should be used to rescue the Asylum seekers in the English channel.
@@ahmedalsharman Asylum seekers? Don't you mean illegal economic migrants?
This will have Putin shaking in his boots - from laughter.
Has Boeing got the corrosion issues fixed?
Just what we need to protect our undersea cables and intercept nuclear-capable subs.
Would be more reassuring to stand up a second squadron
Just a 737 with a few telescopes and laptops on board
"secure the borders" Which borders?
✈❤👍
I fail to understand why the UK couldn't just bung all the tech in the body of an Airbus, which the UK part owned, instead of trying, and failing, to utilise the body of a Comet, designed in the 1940s.
That's part of the reason why the UK is currently in the doldrums economically, and will be for some time yet.
It didn't fail - the Cameron government literally scrapped the airframes that had already been built (trying to hide the destruction from sight, but failing yet again). Much like they then binned the Harrier fleet, selling it off to the USMC for spares at a bargain bin price.
because it would cost far more than you think to do that
Because the Nimrod was around long before Airbus existed.
We could have bought the Japanese version.
Boing 737
Can it spot dingys 😊
Pity it is Boeing and not a brilliant UK made aircraft!
Britain led the ASW way with the Shackleton and the Nimrod and now we have to buy off the shelf from Boeing. The P-8 is not to be celebrated by Britain for it is a mark of shame.
A shame is that they didn’t purchased the P-8 before when other countries did, a sign of pride and not of reason at all. For now, the Poseidon is the only aircraft available that can fight and win the ASW wars of the future, and may be will be the only one for a long long time
Finally someone says it. Agree 100%, but it's like most things we are losing. Trains, ships, aircraft, etc. Its a real shame.
Most of our aircraft seem to be American these days.
ARE THEY GOING TO RESERRECT "FINCASTLE TROPHY " ?????
