just for future reference you don't have to pull the hood on these trucks for an engine swap- there is an extra set of bolt holes where the springs bolt to the hood, you can use these to put the hood into the 'service position' which is pretty much vertical and gives plenty of room to work and you don't have to mess with realigning the hood when you're done
@GM Kof hard that just happened to me a couple months ago. Wind gust came and jacked that hood up
You can just take the front end out and you can pull it out the front

@@MVP11489 I did my 2001 GMC 2500 with a duramax, left trans in vehicle and pulled motor, front support unbolts out, AC compressor and Condenser I just swung them up over pass side fender (Covered with blankets) and never discharged the system.

Did that on my 1980's chev. Quick to pull off the front and made engine removal super easy.

I enjoy and learn from this extensive engine teardown. It shows parts and their use and TOOLS. Being an old(71) guy this becomes more important as I do not want to give up on my car(s) yet.

Watching you remove the power steering pump pulley reminded me of something which happened several years ago...
...A customer came in with a large fluid leak. The front bushing of the P/S pump had worn to the point where the seal no longer could. I told him that he needed a new pump and how much that would cost; he said, "Thanks, but no," and left.
Three days later, he came in with a "belt alignment" problem. When I asked when it started, he told me that he had decided to save money and replace the pump himself, and that it began "soon" after. When I opened the hood and looked, I saw that he had installed the pulley backward. I told him that it was now impossible to remove the pulley and that two pump bolts on the mounting bracket were no longer accessible.
He ended up paying for the original estimate, plus time and effort to locate the correct bracket at a boneyard, plus the pump he bought and ruined, plus the pulley tool he bought.
Sigh...
What a great channel. Getting ready to replace the L29 in my Suburban, and this video is a nice warm up. Plus, your humanity and the great relationship you have with your wife reminds me of my father, who was a mechanic all his life and who loved my mom dearly. Awesome video!
Having swapped many many engines by myself, including several in the 454 / 455 size range, I have to say your optimistic attitude about the relative ease of the process is fairly amazing.
I always looked at it with the same enthusiasm as one would a root canal or some other horrible procedure and if often ended with about as much pain (including the dislocated shoulder I got trying to hang a turbo 400 while doing one and the arthritic knuckles I now enjoy)
You are truly a glass half full get er done kind of guy Dr. O!

I got stumped by a car project. So, I set it aside and thought about it for 2 years. Wednesday I completed the job in 4 hours. So, yeah, some of us have long attention spans. I was just getting into this video when you stopped. Keep the long ones coming.

I like any kind of SMA video. I like the variety you put out, some of my favorites are the Subaru and Toyota head gasket series. I like the diagnostics and the collaborations with Ivan and even just general videos like steering and suspension work. There's always something interesting and always something to learn. Especially interesting to see the engine replaced on one of these beasts as we only have a tiny number of special LHD imports of these type of vehicles in the UK.
I've been able to help a few people with car related crises thanks to watching the professionals at work. Although i never want to touch another BMW ever again...
I hope this was filmed at least a few weeks back because it looks like things are a bit cold there. It hasn't been that cold here in at least a month. It looks like your right about the interest in larger repair job videos. We all just want to see more of you! Take care buddy.

I don't mind a part two or even three. Keeps things in a day 1, 2, even 3 mode and make the job seem less overwhelming when your just watching it.

It doesnt make sense to me why people complain about long videos. Long videos means knowledge! The amount you can learn from a 50 minute tutorial rather than a 15 minute one is significant. I thrive for longer videos.

I'll tell you what I wish all the hose clamps I run into were that easy to come off!! I've spent an hour just trying to get a hose clamp off many times!! I love your show Eric! Gives me something to look forward to and helps me stay motivated at work day to day. My goal is to be even half as good as you one day. You give me goals in my work. Thank you for that. What blows my mind is how hundreds of thousands of these and other vehicles are built, the sheer Amount of stuff that is under the hood that's recreated over and over. Mind boggling.

You have a 2 post lift. Take the body off. Its a lot easier to work with that way.
What a job. That's why I only work on my own stuff which is pre '75. I had a '68 Vette with a high mileage LS6. My buddy wanted to swap engines with his '69 Vette which had a blown engine. Since I was going to rebuild mine, I agreed because he had Air Flow Research heads. When he called, he said he would be over to help me to remove my engine. He showed up 2 hours later but I had already removed my engine. He offered me a job at the House of Corvettes because I was so fast. At the time, I was a Commercial Artist that street raced on the side. I did my own work to save money.

Just did same job but was a 4.3 (a little more room) and your video was very helpful. One main difference was we did mine in a 140 year old log barn, not much room. Thanks for all your videos. PS it runs great.

This may be a seven year old video, but very soon, I am planning on replacing most, if not all, the gaskets on my '04 GMC Sierra I got a few months ago. It has 190,000 plus miles on it, but it runs great! It is a mostly Missouri truck, never in the north. I am having some oil leaking issues in many places, but trying to decide if I want to pull the engine, or just leave in place and service it from there. I'll have to back out the tranny to get to the rear seals, pull some cross braces to get it out and to pull the oil pan, and remove most of the cooling system to get to the front seals, and might as well replace the timing chain while in there. And of course, the valve cover gaskets. And of course, replace the serpentine belt. So watching you do this will give me an idea of what I'm about to get into, even if leaving it in the truck.
I love engine swaps, ive never been good at working on vehicles but always wished I could. I dont have the patience I get fed up and having patience is the main thing with this kind of work.

I usually remove the intake plenum on those Silverattles. Gives you tons more room.

i also pull intake where all the bolts on back of motor are easy to get to. i also have a lift plate that bolts on valley pan with 4 bolts its a old holley 4bbl plate with 2 more holes drilled in it works great

The rear hole on the hood hinges is for the "service" position on the hood. No need to remove hood, just remove hood hinge pin bolts and move to rear hole. Puts the hood up in a vertical position for engine removal, saves any hassle later with re-aligning the hood=)

You need to get your own reality show you would be number one without a doubt!!
Many of these early GMT 800 trucks had bad cylinder heads manufactured by Castech for GM. Castech was one of several companies to manufacture cylinder heads for these engines. Castech didn't follow GM's spec's for casting these and ended up with thin walls around the inner hole used to bolt the heads to the block. This resulted in heads cracking around those holes and allowing antifreeze to mix with the engine oil. The water evaporates off leaving just the glycol which readily mixes with oil creating a thick sludge in the bottom of the oil pan. Once the sludge builds up enough it gets pulled into the oil pick up screen and eventually completely blocks oil flow. I've personally seen this on a dozen of these early GMT 800 series trucks and they all had the bad Castech heads on them, 706 I think was the casting number for these heads. They had a casting mark that looked like a battery symbol for like a AA battery located under the rocker arm assembly. If your looking for a replacement motor, this is something to definitely look for because if they aren't cracked already, they are 100% guaranteed to eventually crack! I'd be willing to bet this is what is wrong with this truck. Heh, had to come back and edit after seeing that the replacement engine has 706 head castings! Too late now, but I would have pulled one of the valve covers to make sure they didn't have the Castech marking on them!
You know I’m kinda confused on that cause all I’ve heard are the best sets of heads to have are the 706 and the 862
@@stephengarrow6966 Not all 706 heads were manufatured by Castech. There is a casting mark under the valve cover that looks similar to a AA battery symbol you would see on most electronics. If it is a 706 casting with that casting symbol then it is a junk Castech casting. 862 heads are all good as they were made by a different manufacturer.
@@stephengarrow6966 the 706 is a great casting, and there were in the ballpark of 100k made that were flawed. If you’re lucky you don’t have any of them.

I will be honest, I do not watch your videos in one sitting, but it is like 10-15 minutes, break for 10 minutes, then another 10-15 minutes for an example.
Since we do not get videos everyday, it helps to at least shorten the wait a little bit :D

So I'm a mobile mechanic. Normally I'm doing this job in someones driveway so I would leave the A/C lines connected and disconnect compressor from engine and leave it hanging between frame rails,also always stuck crawling around on ground due to lack of clearance for a creeper, otherwise I do it almost identical to the way you did here. Love your content!

+Spuzmocker Living in Phoenix I find your comment extremely funny. Here we do anything that requires decent weather in WINTER as the Summers are unbearably hot. Winter it's sunny and 70F. In Summer it's sunny and 120F which trust me during which time you don't want to be changing an engine. I guess this all depends upon where you're from.
The rubber hose transmission line fix is the best one when you buy new lines you end up with leaking transmission lines again in a few years did a rubber line fix 6 years ago on a 2500 still no leaks

Good laugh on the socket that wouldn't stay stuck.. and that wasn't the camera lens that got spayed with the a/c line that was my safety 3rd glasses.. I know cuz I tried to wipe them off when it happened..lol

I can't believe I missed this series. That's my engine, ha ha! Yesterday I was reaching behind to try to get at the Cam position sensor, wondering what it looked like. You showed it on the stand in the first two minutes.

If you ever got to do an engine swap, keep the old , throw it on a stand and start tearing into it. It's a great learning opportunity and you might be able to just rebuild it and now you have a back up motor.
The reason *I* like the longer videos from you and ETCG is that I get to compare how I do this kind of work as an amateur versus your professional methods. I learn a lot, especially when you encounter problems and show how you overcome those problems. The TV shows (that are largely just infomercials for sponsor bolt-ons) are abridged to the point of leaving you in the dark when something doesn't go right. I *want* to see how you deal with broken bolts, rounded fasteners and stuff that just plan won't come apart (or falls to pieces in your hands). Rather than just have you edit that stuff out like it never happened.
Also, it can be very useful to get an understanding of how long these things take to do. I did a 2-part video a few years back on replacing a clutch in a Subaru (Easier than an Audi Quattro?) (watch?v=R3Bw7RiBSmI and watch?v=j_-EKcYVpfo) and TBH I feel like I did the viewers a disservice by hiding all my problem solving from them - it looks like the job was as easy as changing the air filter - it was far from it. The whole ordeal took 9 hours, but you can't tell that from the video.
+Scruit Oh yeah for sure. I don't bleep out the bad parts and I am certain that the master ETCG does not either. He makes tons of mistakes you can learn from for sure. He is the true master though. I am just an un-certified amateur so best to learn from him for master instruction.
I still have a 2006 Silverado runs great. 50,000 original miles. I bought it new, so it's a 1 owner. The AC Delco original battery lasted 10 years. Yes ten years. Even I couldn't believe it. Still has original tires.
I started to disassemble my 4.3, my plan WAS to just slap the intake manifold back into it, it was blowing antifreeze into the oil pan, I disassemble the intake just before I spent 6 month in hospital and 2 yrs recovery. a friend told to pull the heads just to take a look for rust. sure enough I found a fair amount of rust on the cylinder walls. so now I am disassembling the engine
