    I like to call it "North Faced" a lot of companies you have to be careful with North Face used to make some of the best outdoor apparel but took a hard turn towards fashion and marketing instead of performance and a lot of companies are doing this. Filson, Patagonia, Duluth Pack company, and even still North Face make some absolutely fantastic products and some are even the best in the industry but they seem to have 2 very different lines. They make one for the people that DO and the price tends to reflect that and another line that's more appealing to the budget (or sometimes not even that) and they are aimed at the people who want the look of those that DO but without the price or without the rigorous use that comes from those that DO. Patagonia still makes my favorite technical outdoor wear, and things like Tin Cloth and Mackinaw Wool and the whole line of CFF clothing from Filson are still in my opinion worth it but some companies like Duluth Pack have changed market so much I find myself looking at Frost River instead.
    TL;DR companies make different products for different people at different price ranges and beware of anything selling a brand over a product.

I have a tin cloth cruiser, a couple of MiUSA hats and 2 of their made in Portugal shirts. Didn’t pay full price for any of them. Anecdotally they appear to have pretty bad customer service too. Filson recently had a “sale”. Almost every item indicated “SORRY, THIS PRODUCT IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE.”, the item that was available was in size XS. I am on their mailing list and went to their website immediately, they will probably claim they sold out in 32 seconds. I recently purchased Filson All Season rain coat, 425$, I had to send it back because snaps were faulty, about a three week turn around after dealing with an arrogant customer service representative. I am thinking about taking Filson up on their 90 day return policy. Filson is selling copper products at gold pricing. Filson is far far from what it was originally.

    Can't wait for the Filson video! As for Filson clothing, I'm with the group that will only buy if it's made in the US. I know where it's made sometimes doesn't matter as long as the workers are getting paid fair, but if you are buying for the brand, it would make sense that it's made in the USA right? And all those accessories Filson is making, are they trying to compete with Supreme or something? Lol.

    • @DeepFriedDoom
      @DeepFriedDoom 5 років тому +2

      The problem with "Made in USA" is that you don't know to what degree is the product made locally. Was the entire product cut and sewn together in Seattle? Or were the cotton parts put together in Vietnam, and then shipped to the US to have the leather parts attached, which then also counts as being "made in USA"? Maybe all that's "made in USA" is the label that says it's made in USA. With companies like Filson that are being bought out by large corporations and have their supply chain reshuffled, the country of origin can get really blurry.

    • @nuj427
      @nuj427 5 років тому +1

      @@DeepFriedDoom Yeah, well at least they put down "made in USA of import materials". But that's why I think when things are made outside of the US, they should lower the price of their products. And don't get me started about their products sold here in Europe. The same thing that is happening to Filson happened to Remington when they got bought by a large corporation, which squeezed every last bit of profit out of them by cutting corners wherever they could. I remember checking out Abercrombie and Fitch once and they had BOGO 1/2 off on polo shirts and then I checked the price and I was like "Oh awesome, so if I buy 1 polo for $80, I can get the second one for $40??" Just ridiculous. No visible branding either. The logo was the same color as the shirt. I can go to Target or JCP and get an equally nice polo for ten bucks. I'm also trying to stay away from synthetic uppers on shoes and boots, because you can't care for them at all, just wear em till they wear out. my one problem with what you said is that by your own admission you were trying to get some value out of the logo and was disappointed it wasn't very visible - but the logo, an extension of the name brand, is exactly why these items are overpriced compared to their quality. Personally, lately I've been going out of my way to buy items with minimal (or hidden) branding whenever possible.
      I actually have a Lacoste button-up shirt (was a gift) which I simply dislike because the logo is not just too bold (particularly on a plain white shirt), it's, imho, straight up ugly. So even though _I_ paid nothing for the name, I've actually never worn it.

    I know this is an old video but I think you still sing this same tune when it comes to Filson's Alaskan Guide shirt, and IMO this is one tough extremely well constructed shirt that I have had and treated roughly 2 years now and its still in like new condition , impressed me so much I picked up 2 more of them and man no regrets .. worth every penny I think they are $135 now and worth it.. again IMO but man its a well constructed durable , warm tough shirt.

      Do you need to wear a hard hat? I got a great sun visor from MSA for mine. If you’re looking for a traditional hat I really like the crushable hats from Stetson, but nothing beats a good Panama hat in the heat. You can get them in different brim widths too, but the really good ones aren’t cheap.

    Allen Edmonds as of the last year. Have had all my orders canceled due to no inventory this month. Waiting to see if what I ordered will ship or not. Disappointed. They could offer me a 90% off if they cancel this order and they would not lose a dime as I would place an order use that discount code and they would cancel that too. Just a shame that they are 100 miles from me and unable to produce that they offer on their website. I suspect in less than 5 years Allen Edmonds will be nothing more than a licensed label.

    Made in Sri Lanka is made in Sri Lanka as far as I'm concerned.
    Because of that I've went with these $10 flannel shirts Walmart had, they're a great shirt for the money.
    Call me cheap, but if it's not made here I'm not spending decent money on it.
    I bought 6 of the flannel shirts from Walmart and have nothing bad to say about them.
    There's no loose threads coming off and the buttons are still there.

    No sure if I agree about SaddleBack Leather. What do you think is the same quality as SaddleBack Leather but cheaper?

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  5 років тому +6

      Satchel and Page, Marlondo, Cravar, Custom Hide, Ruitertassen, Col Littleton, Basader, Moosebrand are all similarly priced with higher quality. The big problem with Saddleback isn't the products, they're not bad bags, but their pricing. For Mexican chrome tanned leather, stainless hardware, and polyester thread the prices should be much lower. If you got a SBL bag when the prices were reasonable then it was a good value, but for the $500 and above price point I would want a higher quality leather at the very least.

    I had a pair of Mexican made Carhartt pants split just next to the heavy duty leg seam. Like Filson, I buy vintage made in USA Woolrich and avoid all their China stuff. In short, if it is an American company that got known as quality American gear, I won't buy it when made elsewhere. It is like buying a Swiss army knife (Victorinox/Wenger) made in India, one just does not do that. I do own Chinese Taichi shoes and there is no better place to buy these from than the ones made in China.

    While I still own some items from these brands, I will almost always avoid them when looking to purchase something new:
    Mall brands anywhere between Aeropostale and Express.
    Levi's (any non-jean products)
    Cheap work-wear such as Wrangler, Dickies, etc.
    "Upscale" fashion brands like Calvin Klein, Gucci, Cole Haan, etc.
    Most cheap house brands from anchor stores, with a few exceptions
    Cheap footwear like (most) Clark's, Sketcher's, Crocs, etc.
    Cheap sportswear brands like FILA, K-Swiss, etc.
    I also try to avoid quality brands that are overworn such as Ray Ban, Oakley, North Face, etc.

      You’re acting as if high quality products aren’t made in Mexico. We live in a globalist country and have a globalist economic system. Things aren’t automatically trash for being made outside the U.S.
      And sadly, items made in the U.S. aren’t always living up to the name or quality one has come to expect. Think about Red Wing and Allen Edmonds. Red Wing is in a better spot, but they often have factory seconds on discount. Some with AE, but with quality drops across the board.

    For me what happened to Woolrich was heartbreaking, they did a promo w/ Lauren Hill and I knew it was all over then. I saw the writing on the wall and quickly bought as much stuff as I could before it all went to shit, and sure enough overnight they went from rancher/farmer/outdoorsman wear to a hip-hop inspired boyband look.
    Honestly what a bunch of assholes. I imagine the grandson got the company and sold it for a yacht and coke money.
    Sometimes when I want to get mad I just go to their site ad look at the fashion models and think "Not my Grandpas brand". Fuck, I'm still pissed.
    Really goes to show that you can't take other peoples things for granted. Yes, my family did business with them for generations but we had nothing to do with the company other than be their customers.
