Yeah I'm with you on items that are just a little too fancy, too formal to fit practically into my life. I'm reminded of a random guy's funny tweet, "I have a 'Dry Clean Only' sweater that's about to learn some harsh realities about living with me."

    • @TechnoLawyer

Wash the sweater on gentle and hang to dry. Will probably be fine. What is usually meant by dry clean only is “don’t put in a dryer”.

Dude, I had the exact same issue, I took engineers to cobbler and had them stretched for like $20. This worked perfectly, and doesn't damage the boots...

Hey Carl, fellow high instep and John Lofgren Engineer owner here! My solution is to put plastic sandwich bags (those of the crinkly variety) over my socks when putting the boots on. This will significantly lower the friction between the foot and boot and act like some kind of lubricant.
Over time, the boot will loosen up and the bags will no longer be needed. The plastic bag trick also works when breaking boots in and will prevent blisters!

Wear the SOS Harris Tweed Coat with the Gustin jeans. You are overthinking things, remember that Harris Tweed was originally and still is used for hunting. It is nice so you can dress it up but it is still hunting gear. The Gustin jeans will fit the jacket and will get better with wear (fading). If you are really feeling it throw in the JL boots with the outfit 😂, it would be nice though. What is the size of the JL boots?

For the watch, you're supposed to always turn it counterclockwise until you feel/hear the threads seat, and then you screw it down clockwise. Cross threading or stripping the screw down crown on nice watches is a very real thing everyone with a mechanical watch should know to be careful of going forwards!

Your John Lofgren boots could be your most comfortable favorite boots if you do the produce bag trick and just wear them for hours a day. The thin slippery bags from grocery produce work wonders on these style boots. (Thank you Albert!). I know first hand how exhausting getting engineer boots on can be, but this is the saving grace. Also I allow my heal to stretch them out when I am just getting past that friction point. Also make sure to set them in front of the heater right before you put them on. This allows the leather to be soft and flexible.

    • @sweetpadre

What exactly is this produce bag trick?

    • @heystarfish100
      @heystarfish100 10 місяців тому +4

@@sweetpadreWhen you are at the produce section of most stores they supply the customers with thin plastic bags to place your produce items into. The trick is to reuse those thin plastic bags by placing them over your foot before stepping into the boot. With this slippery bag on foot it will aid entry and help stretch the leather in the tight spots. Repeated use continues until you find the bag is no longer needed. Hope that helps.

Nice one! (RE the hat at the beginning)
Taylor’s Stitch pants - they just don’t fit me well, ended up selling both pairs I got. Tried both democratic and their slim fit.
LL Bean flannel - I might try them again but the one I got tore in less than a year with moderate wear.
A leather Apple watch strap off Etsy - Failed in less than six months. I did wear it hard but replaced with an Ashland leather one and it has held up for a year.
Dewalt jump battery pack - failed after one use and didn’t take a charge. I bought a gooloo to replace it at Project Farms recommendation and so far so good.
I’m grateful there’s not too much on this list largely thanks to folks like you!

I've owned the cheapest as well as the most expensive gear, and I would recommend to anyone to buy the "middle of the road" items price wise. The cheapest has always been, well, the cheapest. The most expensive items almost always come with massive diminishing returns (regret), but the stuff priced in the middle has both price and quality going for it. Plus, when it eventually fails, just buy another. You're still likely under the cost of the most expensive item. There are a few things that I own that were quite expensive relative to the general price range of the item that I am glad that I bought. That's pretty rare though. Also, take care of your things properly, and they will last much longer.
For example, I recently traded in a BMW 5 series after purchasing it new in 2022. It was the most expensive car that I had ever purchased. After 4 months I realized that I didn't like it anymore than my fully loaded 2020 Honda Accord. It was a nice car, no doubt, but the price difference for what you get is ludacris. It really is a status symbol thing. You're most likely buying it to show people you have money. I bought it because I always wanted a BMW and genuinely thought I would love it and feel that it was worth it. It was not for me. I'd rather save that money or use it for other things I'm interested in.

    • @outofmind9222

Interesting video and a good mix of stuff. My list below:
#1 - Schott NYC Perfecto - I got it second hand but in pretty fresh condition but it's quite snug and really heavy duty. As someone who isn't riding motorcycles I don't need a leather jacket that heavy so it's not great for daily use and the weather here doesn't tend to get cold enough for me to need a jacket like it for driving in a car or walking. It's also just a smidge too tight and the style is cut relatively high so it's not comfortable to lounge around in just all in all a mismatch of my needs and the jacket's strengths and as it is relatively expensive it really hurts.
#2 - Reylight Pineapple Brass Flashlight - a mid/low priced pocket flashlight but of all the lights I own it is the one which most consistently drains out and needs to be recharged even without doing anything with it so I pull it out of the drawer to use after it just sat around for a month and then have to replace the battery immediately which is annoying.
#3 - Rechargeable Wireless candle lights - Same deal with losing charge while not being used again just super annoying particularly with lights I want them to work when I need them so maintaining a charge is a big thing.
#4 - Offbrand camping cot - I really wish I had splurged on something larger, sturdier, and more comfortable. When I'm camping I can't stand sleeping on the floor and with a full size cot I think I could increase my sleep quality.
#5 - Thursday Wingtips - I just wish I had bought these a half size larger I can force my feet in them but they really do a number on them after a full day of wear and I think they'd be much more comfortable with just that little bit of extra breathing room.
#6 - 6 Person REI kingdom tent - When I go camping I usually end up at most sharing the tent with one other person so a 6 person tent is overkill I could have saved money, weight, and space by going for a 4 person or even a 2 person tent.
#7 - Coleman Chiller Roller Cooler - When I want a cooler I want it to do a better job of staying cold and with more space than this does and when I just want a lunchbag/box I don't need something as pointlessly large and in the way as this. Just a waste of money for me honestly.

Hey Carl! I agree with you on the Randolph Engineering sunglasses. I had to laugh at your watch though. Most of the new watches I see here on YT sell for a lot of $$$$, have an over the top design, are actually cheap junk, and will re-sell for pennies on the dollar. I recently sold my 40y.o. Omega Speedmaster on ebay for nearly 10x what I paid for it. It ran perfectly, and it was still in style. One of my latest "biggest regrets" are the Pladra shirts I bought after watching your video. I spent nearly $500 on three shirts that look beautiful.....wait for it.....HANGING IN MY CLOSET! I have never worn them. The cotton fabric is quite rough and scratchy. The shirts are highly tapered, so I doubt they will fit a scrawny 18 year old, much less my late 60s body. What the hell was I thinking???? And why would I want pictures of wildlife on the underside of the collar? Or the NUMEROUS brand emboidery on each shirt (pocket, placket, sleve)? My other regret is that I'm too old to see the look of disappointment on the faces of the fools who have bought numerous "best in the world", "last forever", "hand them down to my son" expensive PNW boots. Your kids (if you are fortunate to have any) will not want, nor wear those hand me down boots! How many pairs of your dad's Florsheim shoes are you currently wearing? No matter how great they once were, THEY WILL NO LONGER BE IN STYLE BY THEN!! But hey...I'm just a boomer and don't have a clue what I'm talking about!😉🤣😂🤣

I live in South Florida lol to me all of those including the ones you mentioned minus the work boots are a hard pass in my wardrobe. unless I was going out of state to head north. but yes even I have regret, let start with APT 9 Sport jacket series. Their stylist and cheap. problem... Polyester mix with whatever other plastic and like lol 5% linen or cotton. that crap! another thing too, is not accepting the fact that I got a little more on the heavy side. their not going to fit me. the shoulder I should have paid more attention to it before buying it, feels way to tight and stiff. There is nothing worse than a stiff sport jacket to ruin any sudden movement that needed. plus because of the kind of Fabric it is, it is waaaay to HOT (and very important to know the climate where we live in) to wear them at any given day except for the month of February since the only season we get is in the canonical order. Winter/windy, for a month, spring for couple of weeks, and summer for 11month until we go back to winter/windy, oh and rain in between that and hurricane. so yeah a lot to say about that. lol now I do still wear one type of polyester that is 100% polyester but this is meant for those who have potential or have skin cancer, and man Florida is sunny af! which is why they call it the sunny state for a reason. This is from a brand called Coolibar. they work GREAT for outdoors, and of course their very tough but ultra thin clothing, but where I work inside an office, my bosses are ladies, and they love to keep that office VERY VERY VERY WARM and since the body natural produce heat, in a office of 8hr or longer shift, ya that not a joy ride at all lol it get hot af and muggy! oof is the worse! especially when you take your cloth off, it feels like you've bathe in a suna filled of cloth and that OB oh my god it is disgusting! and my regret with that is, that I bought way to many of those brand... my god! I put the Polo ones on Ebay, Offerup and more. Would only keep like 3 of them but no more than that lol, same goes with their pants and sportwear. just terrible. Lastly and this is just on me only, are Boots and Shoes. I enjoy going to Goth parties, and their aesthetic I personally think their awesome depending on what, but the comfortability for guys is just isn't there, it is the most cruelist shit on the planet! any of those big name goth brand are literally TRASH! even some of the old ones. I literally highly recommend to go to Etsy ask 1,000 question to get the right most comfortable size shoes or boots. you can always kid yourself that no killstar or punkrave or devilfashion are very comfortable, NO THEIR NOT! THEIR ARE COMPLETELY SHIT! and the same goes with their Coats because their material are pure garbage, even says it on the fabric (made with recycle plastic, aka GARBAGE!)
as a Floridian I went with the usual and suitable that made live so much easier and better. Seersucker suit or pants, Linen suit or Pants, shirt linen, Shoes dress cotton socks up to the caff with shirt stays attach to the dress shirt, rope material belts, 100% Egyptian cotton on another sport jacket. it a bit on a fussy side, but still much breathable than those APT 9 series., no Show socks too, and again this is more personal for me than it is for someone else. I use Barefoot dress shoes because their very comfortable af on my feet. it may not be aesthetically awesome like any of those dress shoes, they may even come out as clown shoes, but man I do not care, their just 120% more comfortable on my feet than anything else. OH also a panama hat too. Sunglasses Oakley's and some other vintage crystal glass that used to belong to my late father, looks very awesome. And those are the things that I DO NOT regret. sorry TL;TR

    1. A cheap house on a 15yr mortgage back when interest rates were 3%. Smartest financial decision I ever made.
    2. A pair of Odenwald boots from Allen Edmonds years ago. Look great, fit superbly, and have worn in a way that makes them look even better.
    3. A Hamilton khaki field mechanical watch. Looks great with anything casual.
    4. A pair of low-top converse Chuck Taylor 70s. Classic looks but built with way more cushioning than the standard Chucks.
    5. A pair of selvedge jeans from Uniqlo.
    6. A tobacco color corduroy trucker jacket from Banana Republic. Fits me perfectly.
    7. A newer MacBook Pro - damn fine laptop, worth every penny.
Yeah that’s about it. I have a ton of stuff, and don’t wear or use most of it. Omega watches? Eh, I end up wearing my Hamilton most of the time when I’m casually dressed. Suits and sports coats? Eh, I’ve worked mostly from home since 2018. Various flannels or work shirts from different brands? Eh, there’s like 2-3 I sort of like, rarely touch the rest. Various pairs of selvedge jeans from different brands? Eh, honestly, the cheapie Uniqlos have worn in the best.
I could go on. I’m always like “ooh, squirrel!” and buy the thing that catches my eye, then I don’t really use it.
Oh and bros, don’t ever buy a white leather chair if you even occasionally wear raw denim…

I regret buying Invecta watches. I do have one investa mechanical watch that I like but is to big to wear for work and has a metal bracelet. I now stay away from the metal bracelet and use leather or rubber type for I do electrical work and got my watch up against some terminals and welded the clasp shut. It got pretty hot & had to use pliers to get it off. Luckily enough it was low D/C Volts.
I like your videos keep up the good work. I have bought Dluthe jeans in the past when they first started they lasted a long time but now they have cheep end them up. I have bought Herock jeans from Germany and they have lasted 5 years and I still can use them for they still look good

When you where talking about sunglasses at first, I was thinking Randolph or American Optical. I am a private pilot and they are by far the best aviator sunglasses available. Then you mentioned your Randolph’s I smiled, definitely worth the spend if you don’t loose them, mine have stood up to 8 years in a cockpit, in a car and on my head. They have been dropped multiple times, knocked off my face by my toddler and dog, and somehow survived just fine. Glass lenses are not the demon that every optical store makes them out to be, mine have never shattered and they are way better optical clarity than plastic or polycarbonate.
I collect watches and I fell victim to the same hype, I bought a Yema Superman when they first came out, it was a great watch until the crown stripped. Normally, I’d say the same as you did: it’s possible I did it, it was my fault. However, I have had 20 dive watches and that’s the only one I ever had an issue with. They repaired it once under warranty (I still had to pay shipping to France), but when I got it back it had the same issue within a few months, and I just threw it in its box and there it sits, regret in a box. Don’t beat yourself up on it, a lot of these micro-brands use cheap Chinese parts and assemble them in Switzerland so they can put it on the dial. It is my opinion that the screw threads on some cases are just too soft and strip out easy. Stick with your Oris, much better watch!
Ok, last regret: White’s Mule Packer boots. I got a pair after buying a pair of Franks Patriots and loving the high arches. I wanted a more western style with a less aggressive lug. I did not really want to break the bank but wanted moderate quality from a known PNW company. The Mule Packers fit that criteria. Color me not impressed. My Franks’s are thicker leather, and have better quality than the Whites at about the same price point. Where I don’t think I sacrificed much on the Frank’s, you can tell the White’s are made for a “price point.” The laces are cheap, the leather is thinner, they seem to fit oddly, when laced up they pinch where the seams from the upper meet the lowers around the laces. This may go away as the my break-in, but man they are killing the tops of my feet. I believe they will hold up, they are good quality, but definitely not worth the price, your paying for the name on these in my opinion….

@cle_roknn3742 My much less expensive White's Perry boots had the same hot spot around the laces. Must be a design flaw, IMO. I bought a couple of their false tongues and the problem went away.

I regret so many things I bought out of FOMO essentially. I also get very enthusiastic about things/hobbies and get very into to them and then loose all interest in them. So I regret a lot of things. As far as footwear, Caterpillar boots, I like their simple style boots more than Timberland and Clark’s cost too much. However, they never fit right to my foot (Palladium has been the best but the glue always gives out). Luckily, I bought them on sale but still they were a lot of money.

issue with Squale was the same issue with all the other indepdent companies that used the same 3-hand ETA movement. ETA was is owned by Swatch group the largest in the world and they decided to stop supplying parts to third parties and only supply the Swiss brands officially part of the Swatch group like Longines, Tissot, Hamilton, Certina and providing base movements for higher end brands like Omega, BlancPain and Breguet. Since this anouncement all the indepedent brands like Squale, Sinn, Marathon swtiched to Sellita for their movements. Sellita actually have better acuracy than ETA and lower end Seiko movements in 20 years of experience.
As for your winding crown, that's a very easy fix and not uncommon with any movement. When you replace it don't make a habit of widning it every day. With an automatic rotor just give the watch a few good shakes so you can see the rotor spining, which for the newbies is what winds the up the movement internally without having to pull out the crown. And don't adjust the date on the watch late at night when the time is between 9 and 3 am or something, there's a certain position when it causes a lot of stress on the gear train. I have Squale that I bought as a daily beater and it's been a tank of a watch. I only wish I'd have opted for the 50 Atmos with blue dial. That watch was not lost even $20 of value seccond hand in almost a decade.

I discovered that Allen Edmonds had a model with zippers so I wimped out, as soon as i get them broken in a bit I plan to modify them a bit with lug soles etc. They are not bad boots but not worth the full price of $595 but i got them for around $230 on one of their frequent sales.

Whites Perrys were my worst purchase. You used the photos of them in one of your videos. They had the terrible stitching and lasting issues. Luckily I was able to get them to take them back. You buy things all the time that fit better than others or have a better feel to them. So you end up having your favorites but that doesn't mean the others are bad. So I've had pretty good success other than those boots.

Same here, Perry's I ordered in Red Dog had really bad QC issues, including a split in the tongue. The customer service was very unfirendly about it even though I provided photos. They essentially tried to tell me I didn't know what I was talking about... Saying the split on the tongue in quotations "Could be anything." They reluctantly agreed to send out another pair that came with arguably worse QC issues than the first pair... This pairs right boot had the toe box sewn way tighter than the other and didn't fit my foot. Reached out again, and they never responded. I don't know if I'll ever order from White's again.

I bought a Buzz Rickson Deck Jacket off eBay and it’s a really nice, warm jacket, but it’s a tad tight in the shoulders and the sleeve holes are way too high and they dig into my armpits. I tried to convince myself it fits fine and it’ll stretch out, but I’m lying to myself.

I bought a pair of Chippewa 9” Loggers and I don’t regret buying them but I’ll never buy Chippewas again.
I purchased them to wear specifically in the winter outside for work. After a month or so the left boots heal was falling off. The boots showed little signs of wear and were taken care of. I contacted Chippewa and really didn’t get any help….
I put them in my closet for 2 years and was disappointed every time I looked at them. I needed a pair of boots for a job we were doing in the snow and decided in a last ditch effort to take 3/4” electrical staples and JB Weld and attempt to get the heel back on.
Several years later the heel is going strong.
Moral of the story, $9 JB Weld and 3 electrical staples saved a pair of $350 boots.
