There are oil lamps with wall mounts, if the power goes out and you're worried about a pet knocking a lantern or candle over, you can just put them on a wall instead. The lamp, not the pet.

Despite having good winter clothing, those disposable hand and foot warmers seriously saved my butt during a bad winter storm a couple years ago, when I still had to go out to take care of the livestock. On that note, stocking up on livestock feed, medication, and even extra water for them is something I'll never neglect again. We had to melt snow over a propane burner for two weeks in order to water our animals when the electricity to our well pump went out!

That is my main issue. We have a well and whenever our power goes out, our pump doesn't work. Generator is 110 pump runs on 220. In order to mitigate this issue, I went and got about 14 5 gallon jugs and filled them with water. The generator is enough for us to keep the furnace, fridges and deep freezer going. We also have about 4 5 gallon gas containers in order to be able to run the generator.

Important use for hand/foot warmers! Put hand warmers on heart, also on your back in the heart/lung area to better warm the circulating blood. I watched a long documentary showing effects of cold on thinking and dexterity. After putting them on the chest/heart, his thinking improved vastly and he regained some dexterity.

For those with limited funds, there are storage containers with lids, found at Target, WalMart, etc., such as
"Mainstays or Sterlite 18 gallon Totes" which one might use for clothes, which can be repurposed for storing water. They can be stored in a closet and can be filled with a water hose with a connection to a kitchen sink, if a person is in an apt or does not have an outside faucet to use. These totes cost from 7 - $8 last time I checked.

Evening J.R.....those items are also great to stockpile for the upcoming war and the upcoming economic collapse as well as government overreach and fuel/energy price increases. I would suggest for cooking and lighting to have backup equipment as well as the fuel. Don't forget to keep a fire extinguisher handy. Another good stockpile prep is medication, as well as water (pipes freeze and or power outages as well as cyber attacks on the utilities grids). Food that does not need extended cooking or heating is a good choice. Great information as usual J.R. 👍

I have enough for every member of my immediate family plus a couple of spares. Not many people think of using hot water bottles. Cloth bags filled with rice could also be placed near a wood stove to absorb heat, then slid into a sleeping bag. It would give off a little warmth I'd think.

I have the old fashioned "rubber" hot water bottles for all members of my family and we use them when we lose our electricity in the winter. Since I have several elderly cats, they too have their own hot water bottles. If using them on small children or pets, make sure to wrap the bottles in a medium heavy cloth so there are no burns. I like to use old wool sweaters.

You might set aside a family prep night each month or have one Saturday morning contest/ month with the kids, winner gets something, such as a special dinner, picking where to go for the day, et cetera. I'm glad JR mentioned entertainment. That was an issue for me during Snowpocalypse but I was better prepared for ice storm 2023.

I just bought some freeze dried food but is that the best option? How long will canned goods last? Is that a better option? I’m new to this whole prepping process so I am trying to learn.

Hi! Good questions and I understand you wanting to sort this through. I have both of these options on hand.
      1) I have dehydrated food from “Mountain House.” This is a better option then it’s ever been, with the availability of filtering water; an important consideration with dehydrated food is a way to filter water, or use stored water, for rehydration. However, remember that dehydrated food can be eaten right out of the package, as it retains some moisture.
      2) Canned goods that are kept in a cool area, with no sunlight, can last many, many years; far beyond their expiration dates. This has been proven many times, by people opening cans that are 8 to 10 years old and having them professionally evaluated. The nutrient content can diminish, but not significantly. If the cans exhibit rust, dents, or are swollen/bulging -dispose of them.

We are seeing that weather patterns are Sliding around the Calendar: Summer patters have persisted Long into what we normally expect to be AUTUMN in the northern Hemisphere. _*Do NOT Be surprised if WINTER conditions Persist Months into the period where we Normally Expect Thaws and Warm Weather. Much of this is related to Cyclic changes that re-occur and can be seen in the Geologic Record every 12,000 years, going back millions of years.
