Check for water in your gas tank. I see at the beginning of your video that you have a plastic bag covering your gas cap. Assuming that your gas cap has a cracked or missing lens and your float level assembly has fallen in the tank (very common) and left a hole for water to infiltrate, I would definitely drain the tank completely into a clear container to check for water and go from there. I would do this sooner rather than later for the health of your 600. Not the DESS. After starting and the MPEM recognizes a programmed tether, you're good to go, and it will not affect performance.
I think that tether is the problem or maybe both because the way it acted was weird almost like the computer isn’t getting a good connection. I have seen this same sleds have electrical problems with the tether but the sled side tether
DSS Switch. Check that first. That's why you are getting intermittent power. Jeremy keep up with your videos. I've been subscribed to your channel since you, Travis, and Mike went on a snowmobile buying spree with Vahalla Mike's huge green military truck.
@Jeremy Rhydes my very first thoughts were bad fuel, fouled plugs, dirty power valves, dirty carbs or throttle cable, cracked carb boots. I know on my sled in my throttle block there is a small throttle pin switch attached to my killswitch. I only noticed this as I was switching out to an RSI aluminum throttle block and I researched what it was for. Alot of the times on older sleds time takes a toll and causes that pin to wear out, hope this helps!
When I was 15 in the late 90s I too wanted this. I bought a used one in about this condition when I was 34. 3 years later I bought a second one. Now I have a 1999 and a 2003. I spent more to maintain them every few years than they are worth. This year it cost me 1700 to repair their issues. To me this guy appears to be having Carb issues, not a tether issue. The tether should cause the light to blink. He can fix that with a pencil eraser usually.
@@theblishknovk The most expensive part was the 2 carb boots for the 2003 MXZ 600H.O.. On the H.O. models you have to change the Reed Valves with the Carb Boot because they are one solid unit instead of separate pieces like on the regular 600s. The carb boots with reeds were around $260 each and I needed 2 of them. I also needed a carb cleaning, tune up, trail ready maintenance, a new front bumper and a new kill switch. That one came to $1200. The 1999 MXZ 600 was much cheaper. It only needed carb boots, ski alignment, suspension adjustment (to reduce tipsiness), a tune up and trail ready maintenance. That one was $500. Dealer charges $130 for service. If you can avoid it, don't go to the dealer. Do the repairs you need at the end of the season or during the early summer to reduce parts costs and avoid paying a dealer to wrench on the machine. The reason I brought them in was because I couldn't get the 2003 to stop overheating and I didn't have time wrench on them myself. BTW, if any of you have a ski-doo newer than 2000 and it always runs hot on the edge of overheating, yes change the carb boots, but also check your carb heat valve. You don't need carb heat unless your carbs are icing up. If they aren't iced up, you will end up boiling the gas in your carb bowls, pre-heating the air-fuel mix and causing the cylinders to run very hot. I picked up a 2002 MXZ renegade about 4 weeks ago. Same issue. Carb heat was on. Make sure you check your prospective machine closely. If they are only charging $500 to $1000 its going to have some serious issues. I have put about $1200 in to repairing it myself and its not done. I have a track and new ski's to put on next. This was beat. The only reason I bought it is because it runs great and all the electronics work. For $500 that is about as good as you can hope for. But if you are willing to spend $1500 you can usually find one in good shape that would simply need a seat or something simple like that.
@@IbocC64 sounds like its almost better to buy them cheap and ride til they die then just buy another one. Haha. Guess u cant trust is far into the bush that way though. Thats def a steep cost. Just got ny first sled. She's a bit rough but runs and rides.
@@theblishknovk While I could ride it as it is, its probably not the safest. The skis were ground down and didn't even have any carbide or even runners left. The track is dry rotted and is missing as many lugs as it has in tact. The carb boots are dry rotted. The hood straps are dry rotted. The limit straps in the skid were cut. The throttle lever is broken at the bottom hinge point. The tool kit was missing. The seat was torn to shreds. The hood and headlight were heavily oxidized. The windshield was broken off. There was a cracked rave valve cover. The DESS post was missing its mounting nut so it was just floating in the dash hole. 303 Aerospace protectant took all the paint off the idiot lights so I had to swap those out. These are the issues one can expect when the seller says "Runs good but needs some work". On the up side, I got all that purchased and almost all installed for about $1200 which means by the time I am done I will have about $1700 in this machine, but it will be in good shape again. I only ride maybe 100 to 200 miles a season so this machine, even with almost 8000 miles will last me years as I have 4 machines now. (I got a 1994 Mach 1 for free the other day).
@Jeremy Rhydes i would try leaving it running then taking plug caps off and seeing if anything happens if nothing happens when you pull one off its a dead cylinder with no spark
I’ve seen so many plugged jets in these. It’s accumulated total fuel, a plugged pilot plus a partial plugged needle needle jet will run pretty lean. Especially at half throttle. Main jet is just starting to add fuel and it’s not enough to keep combustion cool. So you get scored piston skirts and low compression on the affected cylinder. So all the jets need to flow fuel to get correct air fuel ratio at all throttle positions.
It is definitly cutting out on one cylinder. The DESS key would not cause only one cylinder cutting out. I'd replace the sparkplugs and if it still does it you might have something like a bad coil. Really sounds like I'ts intermittently fouling a plug so could be really rich on one side aswell. Check for stuck float valves too. That would cause similar symptoms.
I had a 2000 MXZ 700 rode her 12,000 Maine miles No rebuild ran mint other then sometimes teather gave me similar issues but not as bad I would wiggle it and engine would clear maybe bad receiving end on sled can’t read teather cord end? Great snowmobile when it runs correctly !!
It's not the DESS system. the key and post function more like an on/off switch. it's either in limp mode, or not, it shouldn't produce a bog even if it's misaligned. If it gets out of limp mode with some adjustment (meaning is able to go above 3k rpm) then it should be fine on the DESS side of it. It could still be computer related, but i would started doing other diag just related to the bog. if it comes and goes, i would guess fuel or maybe a stuck RAVE system on one side.
Fuel related, alternative spark or coil not wanting to play. It's going down to one cylinder from time to time Nothing to do with DES, that either works or not. Having to wiggle it when starting has been a thing since it was new and still is to this day.
Let it idle and while it is pull spark plug boot. If it doesn't change its not firing that side. I've got a skidoo touring that's got a bad ignition coil I think it gets hot and doesn't fire both cylinders. I mess with coil and it re fires both cylinders.
Could also be clutching too. But with any sled. It's hard to pinpoint the exact issue with them unless you're there in person. Could be an electric issue. One way you could test it the tether is to cross the wires across just for testing purposes. Use it around a little. See if bog persists. If not, replace tether. Power valves are also a possibility, like you said. But not knowing the sleds history is hard to exactly say what the issue is unless you know what does have an issue and what has already been checked/replaced. Keep up the good videos. I always enjoy them they are very entertaining. Some other guys with sled videos on UA-cam are kind of boring, not knocking them they could be pretty cool. But your videos so far have been the best.
Would like to know what the problem turned out to be. I have a ski doo 1999 670 that has the same problem and if it is the toggle switch I have been told it can’t be fixed. Thanks for your insight. Spencer
Maybe the plug or coil? possible fuel delivery.. with todays fuels the deposits build up very quickly and once a big chunk is floating around the bowl, all sorts of bad things can happen.
Really acts like it’s running on one cylinder. Just had one coil pack go bad on my ski doo a few weeks ago had to limp it back to the truck on one cylinder it acted a lot like your sled is. Definitely start by checking spark on both cylinders. Maybe you are lucky and it’s just some bad gas but I would definitely start by checking spark
In my experience a loose tether will only cause it to not rev up to clutch engagement it won't cause you to drop a cylinder. It could be as simple as a loose spark plug boot. It definitely sounds like a spark issue based on it coming in and out. I had an Indy do that and it was just a bad plug wire boot.
My first step would be to take a good look at the plugs, it sounds like it's single cylindering. My thinking is intermittent plug fouling, but hard to say.
My 94 indy 500 efi was doing the same thing. It ended up bogging so bad that it left me stranded roadside and I had to trailer home. A year later found out it was a broken piston skirt. On a two stroke you can have good compression in both cylinders and still have a broken piston skirt. To find out you need to take off the exhaust y pipe and feel in with your fingers, or take off the carbs or in my case throttle body and do the same for the other side of pistons. Without the skirt you wont be able to suck the fuel up to spark plugs and no boom for you in that cylinder. I checked everything from tps to fuel injectors before I found that out.
I think it might be the gas to be honest because I want to sit for a minute or two and ask fine. I’m not sure but anyways, keep up the good work keep up the good videos I’ve been watching for a long time.
I always have to wiggle the tether on my 99 MXZ. You should look into the Lancaster Snow Derby it's snow oval racing and you could run that sled the way it is in the Pro 600 class.
Have you tried clipping the ends of the spark plug wires after you take the boot off cause sometimes they get corroded and it will make it run on one cylinder cause its not getting spark
Seems like water in the gas to me. When you started to go uphill the water probably went to the fuel pickup and then once your are level again and it works its way out you get your power back.
Jeremy lovin all of the videos lately been watching you for years - good luck with the doo! Electrical issue check your plugs and safety switches / kill and throttle darn computers!
I got a new dess key tether from the dealer for my 2001 summit 800x and the same thing happened i found the old one and it works perfectly. I don't understand why?
I have a 1999 and a 2003. The 1999 is carbureted and does this every time water gets in the gas. The 2003 is EFI and always runs great but has a 3000rpm idle for some reason. It has never seemed to have a water in the gas problem like the 1999 always does. To test this get a nice flat, straight run like a like and open it up. Wait for it to bog, then play with the key. If it has no effect or random effect it could just be chance. Try hitting your choke for a second or two. I think you will find it stops bogging an opens up again for a few seconds. For me this was from water trapped the fuel pump. Also I only use Ethanol free gas in my sleds. Its sold locally for this purpose. I still get water in the 1999 MXZ every couple years. Never in the 2003 with fuel injection though.

My 06 800 used to do the exact same thing, i changed the plug wires and coils and it’s been fine sense

Never in the 2003 with fuel injection though.
i do know my 2003 legend 600 sport needs a battery to run and for her to run right so maybe yours might need a battery as well to work right
Jeremy Its the fuel pump i just had the same thing happen to me on a 05 mach z.
I have a 99 mxz 700 and I have to turn my teather back and forth before the key light stops flashing
Coil breaking down?
What is stuck or needs a carburetor clean?

its a skidoo always problems with those tethers.great video
my eye, running on one, it ran great at first then partial seizure ? caused by ? dirty barb, bad boot, engine seal
I usually have to put my key at an angle to make it work. New post might help
Could be a plug, I had a sled that sounded exactly like that when a plug went bad.
I’d be testing the stator or the crank seals this is running really lean
Where is the reverse beeper mounted on that?
It’s one cylinder. I got an arctic cat with a can and it sounds the same as that when it’s on one cylinder. What I do to tell what cylinder it is I put snow on each side of the y pipe and see witch one melts faster than you know what cylinder isn’t working
Check the plugs man. Try the NGK iridiums. BR9EIX replaces BR9ES.
Are you running 91 premium non oxy for fuel? If not you should be.
Is it better with choke try it?”. Then you could see if fuel related
I think you have a fouled plug start with some new ones especially since the guy you picked it up from said it was sitting for a while
I bought the same slide back in 1997 new I was the coolest cat in town Sold it probably 7 or 8years ago To a young guy I figured that was it for that slide but believe it or not he hasn't destroyed it and it was still out this Winter 2023 running strong.
Are you having issues with your gauges Jermey? didn't look like the tach or the speedo was working.
I didn't pay attention to that but I do know at some point his tach was working bcuz he said the clutch was engaging at 5k RPM
Tachometer seems to go on and off throughout video might be worth looking into. Love the content and the sleds!
I had a 03 mxz rev that had this same issue
Had similar issues with my formula z. All the money I dumped into it, it was a fuel issue the whole time
Can't you just unplug the mpem or would that not work?
Check spark on both sides. Start ther. Then compression. Cool vids
I'm thinking carb boots or a plugged jet
check the electrical. i know the older Arctic cats have throttle safety switch issues and shut off safety switch on yours there doesnt work
You need to wiggle the tether to get it out if limp mod ut happens to my 2004 skidoo grand touring
i love these sled's. my era. 99-01 mxz. i want to find a 600 in good condition. a 99 perferably
Sounds like a bad socket making intermittent contact, i hate those kind of problems. Good Luck !
Love the old mustard buckets
Sounds like a faulty plug. I have had plugs fail like that. As they warm up they fail more. Might be worth a set of new spark plugs.
Land air can program tethers
I put 20,000 miles on a 2002 zx and the only time the MPEM ever acted up was when the battery needed to be replaced.
yeah you always gotta fiddle with those DESS keys to get em happy
My 05 mxz 500ss does the same thing. Wiggle the key and it should fix it. If you keep Erving it you’ll foul the plugs in my experience.
Can you run without that mpem or a by pass
Can you do a DESS/MPEM delete?
What’re the specs on that OBS at the farm??
Man Jeremy definitely don't kept riding it when it sounding like that at least check the color of the plugs to make sure it ain't running to lean. maybe you just filed a plug
And check crank seals with spray
Also, they could be the power valves that they’re junk jumped up with all that sediment from sitting so long
@Jeremy Rhydes do you do random give aways/prizes??
No he doesn’t that is a scammer dow’t fall for it
Maybe one of the clutch is getting stuck in a hi gear
