Really beautiful ride, John. The lighting, the colors, the vistas, the roads, the topography was just incredible. Very enjoyable to watch. You did a great job of documenting this section. But I think you should have called it, "From Mountains to Mudpies"😋 Gord
The road closed was at 32.97802, -108.05260 North Star Mesa Road off of 35 north of Silver City. The signs said that the road was now private property. We tried to locate a work around but weren't successful. I think had we had internet service or looked a bit harder on GAIA we might have found a work around, but at the time we just looped back down to Silver City, and rode a bypass route. The truth is that there had been a massive wildfire in the area this summer, so there's no guarantee that we wouldn't have hit other closed roads anyway... 00:00 Intro 00:11 Leaving Silver City NM 01:13 Steve Introduction and TAT Recap 05:13 Closed Road 08:54 Detour from Silver City 12:25 Gas Stop in Glenwood NM 13:06 Road to Pie Town NM 17:29 Pie Town 19:02 Mud Road 23:47 Steve goes down 31:00 El Malpais Conservation Area 32:40 The Narrows 39:04 Road to Grants NM
Pretty sure North Star Road is not private. I was just there last year. At some point, the Wilderness boundary is on both sides of the road, creating a narrow legal corridor to travel. I rode from the north and then all over to about mid-way. There is no work around, unless you go east to I-25 and back west near T or C. I drove that route and regretted it (boring). I'm bummed you missed the ride up to Beaverhead Work Center via North Star Road! There are a ton of elk and I even saw a wolf. I hope it's not all burned. I'm glad you stopped at the Ventana arch. No one else there either! NM is just great.
@@clvrswine a few riders on the route since us have posted about it being closed. Steve read the sign (which seemed new) that explained it was now a private road. just sayin'
Thanks for taking me places Mr. Johnny Pow. I ride a 2009 KLR650 and I can imagine what it would be like to be on the roads you're traveling. Maybe some day.... Thank you
No. I might start creating some music for videos when I have time (that's the plan) but to make it easy I use stuff I find on a music licensing library
Mud is the worst. You can't believe how 1/4 inch of mud can make a road impassable - but motorcycles are only one-wheel drive! I had a low front fender (like Steve's) on a Triumph Tiger and tore it off in the mud on the UTBDR. ($100 piece of plastic.) In a heavy rain, you might simply be stuck for a day or longer! Plan food and water with survival as a real concern.
The Narrows, NM section looked pretty epic. I remember on an earlier video that you put out that you didn't seem too enthused with the Seat Concepts seat, has it started to break in and become more "of the bike" or are you still not super happy with it? Cool videos, man - thanks for the effort. Cheers.
That section was totally rad and unexpected. I loved it. Yeah - the seat was alright. I think the standard Seat Concepts (not the tall version) is likely better. I like the SC seat on my DR650. Having said this - it's still a lot better than the stock CT125 seat which tried to assassinate me last year.
@@JohnnyPowRides The divide is still right close to Antelope Wells but on private land. But it is definitely desert with no Antelopes and all the water in that area is infected with legionaries disease.
This day we rode pavement to the dirt section only to find it recently closed. The only option we had was to return to where we started the day and take a detour that was again mostly pavement. Upcoming days have much more off road. And yes, we did camp when we weren't covered in mud or so hot we couldn't take the elements at the end of the day.
There are a few times on this trip where we were forced, or elected, to take a few detours. We still ate dust on gravel and dirt roads for a lot of miles. Some (not all) but some of the paved roads were really fantastic I gotta say!
The sunset on those cliffs was amazing.

Thanks for taking us on the ride! That space in the Narrows has got to be one of the most beautiful places in the southwest. Just wow.
Definitely. So much of the scenery and roadways in New Mexico were great.

You need some #9 tie wire to replace exhaust bolts.
We ended up using a rok-strap to lash it up against the side and it held really well.

Steve: You doing alright? Johnny: Sometimes. 😂😂
If he'd have asked me I would have flat out said - NO! 🤣
Love the video man. I am a new adventure rider from SC with a Himalayan.
What part of SC are you from?
Columbia. Although I no longer own a REH
@@JohnnyPowRides I am right down I-20 from you.
Maybe someday we can grab a coffee or take a ride. I enjoy meeting others in the adv moto community.

Ah, Antelope Wells is definitely desert.
Yeah ... technically we didn't start at Antelope Wells, we started in Columbus
Or, to be really technical we got on the divide at Silver City

Jonny pow, seems like alot of pavement, is that because of the closed road or is it just that part of NM? Are you guys camping at all?

@@steves6614 the mud and heat must have sucked. I wouldn't want to jump in a tent a mudded up and hot as hell. Hot shower, cold beer and some AC.
