  • A UK based review of my Porsche Cayman 987 S let's discuss if it is better than a 987.2 What are my future plans for my Cayman 987 S Modifications exhausts and a review. I have owned the car for 9 months now and feel I have a good idea on what makes the Cayman 987.1 such a great car, why the handling is so praised by journalists in the UK & worldwide not to mention that exhaust, the glorious soundtrack from the normally aspirated Porsche 3.4 flat six engine. In future videos I would like to modify this car, things such as an exhaust upgrade and some Porsche upgraded parts from other cars in the range such as a 911 GT3. The Cayman S shares lots of parts with its bigger brother the Porsche 911 so I think some videos on this would be interesting and helpful to some.
    Is this the best handling and most engaging car for the money and does it tread on the toes of the 911? Watch this video to see what I think. Would I recommend somebody to do what I did and go out and buy a Cayman 981.1 rather than a Cayman 987.2, well I cover that in the video so be sure to watch to the end to find out.
    For other videos on this car be sure to subscribe and like this video so you don't miss a thing. I have done a buyers guide on the Porsche Cayman S 987 and also a cost video, both of which are linked below.

    Really enjoyed the video.
    Very honest & not biased.
    Became a 997 owner myself one year ago & been in love every since. The Cayman always turns my head & will remain to do so. 😎👍

      You will get there! I’ve been hoping to do it for years but finds and just being scared of the running costs have put me off. Il going to document everything on here as I know how hard it is to find out the costs from a real owner

    Hi Joe, thank you for a great review. It was very enjoyable and informative to watch.
    At present, I am at a bit of a crossroad when it comes to purchasing a car. My dream car is in fact a Nissan 370Z, but a Porsche Cayman S is another viable option for me.
    That is why I am in the process of doing some research. And in my findings so far, the Porsche Cayman S has had nothing but praise and amazing reviews throughout.
    So it's a difficult decision for me. I still haven't decided yet, but your videos are fantastic and great for me to watch and understand and get an insight into such an amazing car.
    And about the automatic gearbox...personally I wouldn’t have it any other way. I'm very glad that it has one and that there's an option for it. A Porsche with an Automatic Transmission
    is the only one which I will be going for if I was to buy a Porsche. Years ago when I switched to my first automatic transmission car, I swore that I'd never go back to manual again...And
    I never will.
    So a massive thumbs up from me on the automatic transmission and your great and honest reviews.
    Thank you

      Thank you so much!! I do quite like a 370Z. Where the Porsche is better would be handling, build quality oh and looks. I’d drive both, I think once you hear the flat six howl you will be sold👍

    The reason why the Tip box gets a bad press is because it's not consistent with the character and makeup of the rest of the car. It's an OK box, especially given it's a torque converter and pretty old at this point. But these cars really deserve a manual box to match the involvement and precision on offer from the rest of the package. They really are rather frustrating and labotomised to drive with the Tip box. It's a lovely NA engine and it's a fantastic to use with the manual box and the pedal box that's really well set up for heel and toe. Blipping the flat six down through the gears with the manual box is one of the great joys this car has to offer. Unless you have the Tip box.

    • @JoeTalksCars
      @JoeTalksCars  3 роки тому

      Tend to agree. No doubt I’d love a manual too. I suppose it’s personal preference, it just works for me. I’m quite lazy 🤣

    I have to agree that the early cayman is undoubtedly one of the best quality sports cars money can buy. If you can ignore the poor mans 911 stigma then it’s a no brainer. In fact nowadays the later model Caymans are arguably a better balanced drive with the engine being in the right place. For me the Cayman GT4 is probably my Porsche of choice for two reasons. I will never out perform it and being mid engined it’s far more balanced and pointy than it’s rear engine bigger brother. I consider the Cayman as the drivers Porsche and if that means I’m poor to some then no worries 😂👍!

    • @JoeTalksCars
      @JoeTalksCars  3 роки тому +1

      What I would do for a GT4 🤪 for the money these cars are bought for I should have called the video “look rich for 15k” so many people think I spent 3 or 4 times that. Turns out most people don’t see what us car guys do. I genuinely think most wouldn’t spot the difference between the latest 911 and the 987 if they were the same colour. I would 100% have another cayman but of course a 911 is on the cards as it seems like a natural progression and one to tick off the list. Cheers for the comment 👍

    See how your cup holder flap is sagging lower then the line of the that follows around the dash at the same height?
    If you drop the flap and then look at the underside, there’s two bolts there that can often be tightened up to lift the flap so it flows in with the rest and fits more flush 👍

    • @JoeTalksCars

      @@JoeTalksCars Yea they’re quite prone for it Few things these caymans seem to have issues with like sagging headliners but that only seems to occur in warmer climate areas, So we’re safe 😄

    my suspicion? the porsche cayman is a "better" car than a 911. would like to see the two raced over, say, a mountain pass in the swiss alps from "a" to "b". who would win? I suspect the cayman, as the handling and themid-engine concept are simply superior. in fact, if the 911 didn`t have such a backhistory and the cayman were toted as the top line porsche, people would actually be buying caymans! IMHO, it`s all primarily down to marketing.
    as for comparable cars, my alternatives to the porsche 987 would have to be the alpine a110 for the ingenuity of the concept...and the always amazing mazda mx5, an underrated, fun-to-drive "little brother" to the cayman/boxster.

    • @JoeTalksCars
      @JoeTalksCars  3 роки тому

      I mean like I said I’d swap mine for a 911 but that’s just marketing as you said and I’m a sucker for marketing. Dynamically the cayman is miles better. Had an Mx5 years ago and agree the handling is great, just a little underpowered for me.

    • @milchomarkov8158
      @milchomarkov8158 2 роки тому

      A 911 would win. Every time. One is the superior car, the other is porsches golden goose - they made sure as hell the cayman/boxster platform would be crippled from the factory in terms of performance. Just go look at the 987 and 997 headers...

    I bought a 978.2 to avoid either or all of the big three scourges of the Porsche; IMS, RMS, and Bore scoring, effectively all the money that you saved you spent it back on an engine rebuild which tallies up to the price of 987.2. I was guided by your horrific experience with bore scoring and paid the extra to avoid the 987.1 pitfalls.
