    This is one of the few Good Australian car reviews on the internet. You actually talk about how it feels and actually drive the car a bit. All other Australian reviews just talk about the numbers, drive around slowly, talk about dry facts and figures and what the car feels like at 60kmh and tell you nothing about how the car truly feels when pressing on a bit

      Thanks Jordan. Much appreciated. Our goal is to evaluate cars from a real owner/driver's perspective, but obviously we have to be mindful of all road laws. We're trying to find the right balance - we try to be brisk but legal, so you won't see tyre-smoking sideways action and launch control.

    just got back from a three week vacation in my new-to-me 2007 cayman 2.7l. about 6000 miles in total. no problems at all. averaged about 700 miles per day on the return trip. while i'm fast approaching septuagenarian status it was comfortable enough for me. has climate control and a previous owner updated the infotainment system from the bose to a pioneer unit with 7 inch touch-screen, camera, bluetooth and navigation
    BTW, took along my golf clubs too!

    Hi There, as the owner for three years now of a 2006 Cayman S, I just wanted to commend you on a great real world test of this sweet car. This is a lovely example and it has a few changes from Euro spec 2.7 Cayman`s in that the clocks are white ( Like its big brother ), whereas Euro 2.7`s have black clocks, and the calipers being painted yellow instead of black on the 2.7 is not something you see here, unless that was a later mod of course. The tail lamps are also not what you see here, but I suspect they were upgraded. The only thing I disagreed with was right at the end when Stu made comments about the IMS bearing ``issue``. It is actually a non issue for the 2.7 Cayman as it came out in 2007, and all Cayman S models from 2006 onwards got a totally redesigned and much larger single race bearing. A small amount of the very first 3.4`s which debuted in late 2005 might have had the original bearing design which caused issues in about 5% of cars. I cannot verify what year Porsche changed the IMS in the 997 and Boxster, but I would assume it was on a broadly similar time frame. The more relevant issue to look out for on the 3.4 model is Bore scoring on some cars which can lead to excessive oil consumption and over a long period of time, possible engine failure unless some expensive repairs are carried out. The second variant of the 987 debuting in 2009 eliminated this problem and also the IMS bearing issue went away due to a complete re design. I personally have never had any issues in three years and have 74k miles on the clock at this point. I look forward to more videos from you down the road. Cheers from Ireland.

    • @inCARnationAustralia
      @inCARnationAustralia  3 роки тому

      Wow. Thanks for the lengthy and considered reply James.
      Yes, I believe the calipers were painted yellow by a previous owner. Also various body trim bits painted black that were previously body colour. Thank you for the clarification and reassurance regarding the IMS. I was struggling to find out exactly when this upgrade happened. Particularly as this is my car which has also proven to be very reliable. Clearly Porsches are popular on the channel (and rightly so), and we do have offers of more P-cars to review - 991 GT3RS, 991 Turbo S, 996 Carrera for a start. But we do want to add more variety - Japanese, Italian, English, older classics, race cars, Aussie muscle cars, Tesla, all planned.

    2.7 litre engine does not have bore scoring issues as an added bonus for buying a base version. Might be the better purchase when buying used. As identified in this video it is a superb drive with the 2.7, and without the fear of the bore scoring issue might actually be more sought after than the S models

    Gents, I am writing in 2022 and am having a closer look at the 987.2 manuals from an affordability and 6 speed manual aspect. Analogue although I am tempted by the 981 pdk but pricing is crazy and moved out of reach. A weekend driver is what I am after and your review is clear and informative which is very helpful. Excellent review! Had many cars, but will never sell my Cayman.
    I have a `12 987.2 base 2.9 manual, I think this is the SWEET spot, new engine but still not direct fuel injected, shorter gears than the S, perfect for everyday.
    Important points: stay with the original springs and shocks and 17" wheels, that brings the most enjoyment for the roads. Sprintbooster is a must. Carnewal GT exhaust is the best, listened to many others, nothing beats it. Short-shifter (Numeric).
    Only one thing missing, a sunroof for letting in some exhaust notes, without the noise of the sidewindows down... But no such option, so working now on a tilt-able side quarter window.

While the extra torque of the 3.2/3.4 is nice, the 2.7 is such a sweet free-revving package and sounds awesome over 5000rpm, particularly with an aftermarket exhaust to give it some boom. I suspect on the road there wouldn't be a lot of difference between them, so maybe not enough points of differentiation. One thing we are discussing is doing some track comparisons between similar cars, as I know people would like to see us pushing the cars a bit harder in a way we can't legally do on the road. So it would be good to show road (and race) cars being driven more briskly on the track, comparing lap times. Expect to see Cayman road car vs MX5 race car, or M2 road car vs Golf R race car. Next, I started looking at 987.1 Cayman's and even drove a 2.7 Tiptronic, which I thought was fun.
    Decided to extend myself and found a base 987.2 PDK. I also have a vintage Mack and a S2 RX7 race car, so I'm done with gear changing 😅.
    As much as I'd love more power, it's a true sports car and like Stu said, it doesn't scare you...
    Love the exhaust on yours, do you know what brand?
    As much as I love the lower stance of yours, it'd ruin the nose on mine here in Sydney. Plus I wouldn't want the ride to be firmer than it is on 17's.

Nice deep tone at idle, no drone, quiet when cruising, but classic flat-6 wail in the higher revs and just a little burble when downchanging. My car is also in Sydney and I would prefer standard ground clearance and more suspension compliance. The nose is too low. So all you need is the exhaust and yours will be perfect.

    Excellent content as always Gentlemen. Gorgeous car. I stumbled upon a 2007 5 speed manual base Cayman 987.1 in Meteoric Grey with a black interior in September 2020. I’ve owned BMW’s and Corvettes but honestly this car truly takes everything to another level. It was a 0ne Owner Garage Queen (now set free under my watch) with only 21,000 KMS on her (13,000 MILES), and all service records. I took it for a test drive and fell immediately in love. The Dealership (I normally never buy from Dealerships) was asking $38,999.00 CDN but I got it for $34,500.00 CDN (I live just outside of Ottawa, Canada - so yes she is in storage right now until May) which translates to $27,000 USD. The car is in mint condition and looks like it just came off the assembly line in Finland (this generation was assembled in Finland not Germany). I took her to a separate mechanic who works on Porsches and he found it to be in excellent shape mechanically. It has some factory upgrades including the Bose sound system and the headlights. The only thing not original is the exhaust which the previous owner changed to a REMUS which not only has a truly beautiful sound but also looks great with the twin tips out the back centre. Anyway SO much more I could write about but the bottom line is ironically when I checked to try and find a Cayman or a Cayman S of the same year in Ottawa (1 million population) I found ZERO for sale. I might try and make a decent video of her in the Spring/early summer so you can see (and hear) her. Not going to be selling this beauty anytime in the foreseeable future 😊

    Nice review. Just one thing. The ims on a 987 cayman is a sealed unit. You need to split the engine case to access it. This is unlike the 986 and 996 cars where it was relatively easy and fairly cost efficient to change the bearing. I owned a 987 2.7 for 4 years. Great car. The 981 is very much an improvement, particularly on our congested, variable quality Aussie roads.

    Lovely example of the breed. What exhaust and header setup do you have on it? Makes a wonderful noise without being too shouty on the video. Have been trying to decide on whether to put a Carnewal GT exhaust and/or their headers with 200 cell cats on my 987.2 CS. Keep up the great vids!

      Standard manifolds I believe with Remus muffler. Cats also probably standard but I don't know. It certainly deepened the note at lower revs and does sound great up top. No drone at all at light throttle.

    On the 987.2 Cayman R and Boxster Spyder the removed the "hood" over the 3 main dials in the dash to save weight. I notice that your car also does not have the "hood" over the dials. Curious if you removed it? Perhaps it was something the previous owner did?

    • @inCARnationAustralia
      @inCARnationAustralia  3 роки тому +1

      yes, the previous owner removed it. It's hard to imagine the weight saving is significant, so probably personal aesthetic preference.

      I'll double check, but I believe it's a Remus. I also had a Remus on my previous 996 Carrera and it was awesome. Never droned, but lovely deep tone, burble on over-run, etc.

    For ultimate driving pleasure would it be Cayman or Boxster?

    • @inCARnationAustralia
      @inCARnationAustralia  Рік тому

      John purely depends on whether you're a wind-in-the-hair kind of guy or not. Most people would be very hard put to tell the difference in body stiffness - the Cayman being slightly more rigid. In terms of driving dynamics, the 987 Boxster and Cayman are virtually identical to drive. If your idea of an ideal day includes getting a tan or that feeling of being part of the outside world, the probably the Boxster. If you have no desire to have your head in the breeze, Cayman. Mechanically they're the same. I'd recommend the "S" variant though with a manual gearbox, whichever you choose.

    • @inCARnationAustralia
      @inCARnationAustralia  2 роки тому

      Yes I know. Ich kann ein bisschen Deutsch, aber auf Englisch klingt es etwas ... altklug, "Porscha" zu sagen. I think the middle ground is best, where you let the word trail off but do pronounce the "e" quietly. That was the Germans don't roll their eyes at our bad pronunciation and the Aussies don't think you're stuck up. In Germany it's natural for me to pronounce it properly.

  • @theamaturegolfer7798
    @theamaturegolfer7798 3 роки тому +1

    The 2.7 is a lot more reliable than the S. it will save you money. However I’m going for the S 987.2 next. 330BHP quicker than the stock 911 997 Carerra. Better handling car. The cayman rivals the 911 100%. The boxster is more of a poor mans porsche in my opinion.

    • @inCARnationAustralia
      @inCARnationAustralia  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the input, A.G. I tend to regard Boxsters and Caymans in the same light. After all, they are the same car except for the lid. Some people just prefer getting sun on their noggin. Me, I'm bald and I burn easily so I don't. Sure, I prefer the styling of the Cayman but I try to avoid the "poor man's Porsche" moniker as so many non-Porsche people trot it out.

    Cayman was never a 2.5 or a 3.2.
    997 that the cayman is family to was never a 3.4.
