    Hi, great video. Battery seems almost perfect, if it was a few mm thinner then it would be the ideal Ami backup. An extra 19/20km is not to be sniffed at.

    Thanks for another backhernia powerbank review! You are correct to say that the final 10 to 15% of the EV battery charges more slowly. This was true of my Renault Zoe and is true of my MG5 if I go to 100%. Good manners/battery care says charge your EV to 80% only, which reduces the range but results in a quicker charge. Not really practical for the Ami given its modest capacity.

      @@MeandMonAmi A Mr. Boo pedal generator? Let's see, if an Olympic cyclist can manage about 400 watts, Mr. Boo might manage say 100 to 200 watts with furious pedaling, and if the Ami burns 100 watts per km, Mr. Boo might add one km of range per hour of heavy pedaling and sweating, seems worthwhile and fun to watch.

      @@MeandMonAmi Charging at a lower lower state of charge might add range faster, but as the AMI charge is limited by a standard mains socket and does not have a level 2 charge port, I wonder if you would actually charge faster at a low state of charge, or limits charging to about 2,000 watts for the entire charge?

  • @jackoneil3933
    @jackoneil3933 Рік тому +6

    Good option! And the way the charge was tapering off, I suspect it was the AMI's Battery management system reducing the charge. The AFERIY 2000W is advertised as being LIFEPo4 or Lithium Iron Phosphate battery pack, which is inherently much safer than Lithium Ion batteries, typically have 10X the charge cycles and is more environmentally friendly.
    Also, discharging below 10% can shorten battery life but charging to full capacity should be less stressful than with Li-Ion batteries. I'd also avoid exposing or operating Lithium Batteries to temperatures above 60C for best life.

      @@MeandMonAmi Same for the Ami battery when discharging. Not sure if there's a buffer when the AMI's battery indicator shows discharge to 10%, and if that's actually 10% of total capacity, or there's an extra 10% safety reserve built into that indicator, but as a precaution, I'd probably avoid discharging very far into the 10% discharge range, and that's where a extra power-pack might help extent battery life as well as range.

      For which battery is it bad to let charge lower than 10%? Is it the Lithium ion or the lithium ion phosphate?

    • @jackoneil3933
      @jackoneil3933 Рік тому

      @@sharonec5419 Both Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) can be damaged if discharged below 10% and more so if to 0%.
      I have tested discharged Li-ion to below 2.5v per cell in laptop and ebike packs (that a 48V system like the Ami and most ebikes, would be 32V), and have seen a drop of up to 10% in total capacity.
      Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries I have seen discharged to as low as 0.6v per cell and have seen them recover and appear to function normally even two years later. Same for overcharging, so LFP would seem to be more forgiving, but over-discharging and over-charging should be avoided with both types.
      Most Li-Ion and LFP battery packs have Built in Battery management / protection devices that balance the cells and protect from over charging and discharging but it may still be possible to over-discharge, but routinely discharging to less than 20% or over 80% real battery capacity can shorten life in both lithium types. LFP however is typically good for 3 to 10 times as many charges and is more forgiving of overcharging, and is unlikely to catch fire or explode if overcharged or discharged.
      Most EVs such as Tesla when showing '0%' pack power, go into 'turtle mode' and then cut off drive power, should do so with actually 5 to 10% charge left to prevent battery damage. However, during Tim's deep discharge test in the Ami where the never really experienced turtle mode, rand a good distance after ranching 0%, and the 12v battery went completely dead might have discharged the li-ion battery below its actual 10% reserve?
      If I had an AMI (or any Li-ioin EV) I'd install a volt meter on the Li-Ion traction battery and would never below 10% charge, and avoid charging over 90% actual charge voltage to extend the life of the battery pack.
      After 2 years of testing Li-ion LFP packs I built, Hands down I prefer LFP, for Safety, durability and performance, however LFP performance seems to degrade more a low temperature, and charging LFP below 0 degrees C can result in damage. However LFP appears to be less prone to damage from high temperatures and can typically be recharged much faster than a li-ion battery, and generates less heat under under high load.

    Thank you for all your nice videos It is a very well made channel indeed!
    I wonder if you can still close the door while charging from the inside or if you have to have the door open? It looks like the cable would be squeezed in between the rubber gasket. A trick could be to route the cable back inside the car through the side window. But how safe is that when a thief could reach the door opener latch with a wire and thus easily break into the car?
    Is it possible to leave the car and go for lunch while charging the car from the powerbank?
    Another question that you could maybe make a video of is putting a Solar panel underneath the giant glas roof. There are flexible monocrystalline Panels for around 100-200€ on the market that should technically fit the whole surface area underneath the sunroof and deliver 130-150Wp. With these you could possibly charge the power station at a rate of 0.25-0.5kw each day, which means 5-10% of free range added once you charge the car with the power station.
    If you are not afraid of electronics, it would also be amazing to see if it is possible to add batteries in parallel with the installed 48V one. You can get a 5kwh 24V LFP battery for less than 1000€ with integrated BMS and bluetooth readout. They only weigh around 40kg and are pretty compact at 30liters, so you could easily add two of them for another 10kwh. A total of 15,5kwh would give a range exceeding 200km. For the motor electronics it should not make a difference, the load on the battery would be even lower. But for AC charging one you could disconnect them and charge seperately.

    • @MeandMonAmi
      @MeandMonAmi  Рік тому

    Having seen you using those power bricks, my over-riding question is why, instead of using those cludges, you don't get a bigger battery put in your Ami? It would also be interesting if you put a roof rack with solar panels to see how much extra power you'd get from using those panels to charge your car.

    • @MeandMonAmi
      @MeandMonAmi  Рік тому +2

      Roof rack solar would at best power a few peripherals and you can’t charge whilst driving. Bigger battery would invalidate the warranty.

    • @raisagorbachov
      @raisagorbachov Рік тому +1

      @@MeandMonAmi I am not so sure about that. Roof rack solar could charge the battery while you're parked. There's a fellow with a chinese battery powered pickup truck that he uses on his ranch. He put a tiny panel on it and reckons that just parking it in the sun reduces the number of times he has to charge it.
      As for the warranty - once that has expired - you're really free to do anything with it. I don't know how long the warranty is on the Ami.

    For people who can't charge downstairs, a solution might be such a portable power station they charge upstairs and with that they charge the car. No cables on the street is nice too. However I suppose this comes with losses?? And then the extra costs.
    So why is the car itself not having say two removable battery units ( only one probably too heavy) which "click in" ? A third one could then be bought for range anxiety problems. The mechanism would have to be robust enough to survive all that taking in and out but technically it's possible I suppose.
