Using a Champion 2200Watt petrol inverter generator to recharge my Citroen Ami Pop electric quadricycle.
The Ami has a range of only about 40 miles and often requires a top up charge when out on longer trips. If there are no suitable charge stations available, the generator will be able to give the necessary boost.
The Ami's onboard charger consumes up to about 1760watts maximum and the Champion generator can supply a constant 1900watts.
During the charging test, the generator was supplying 1648watts of power.
In one hour the generator supplied 1.633kWh and this increased the range from 6 miles to 19 miles (a 13 mile increase). The generator used 0.9 Quarts (0.225 Imp. Gallons) of petrol. This equates to 57.72 mpg. As the Ami gets about 7.5% less range than actually shown, the actual consumption would be about 53.25 mpg. Petrol in the UK currently costs GBP £6.50 per gallon and this gives a cost per mile of £0.12. When charging on the domestic electric supply the cost per mile is about £0.06. - Авто та транспорт
I really love your road runner coyote sticker on the back! Also love your videos on owning an Ami. It's such a treat to see someone who knows how to look after a vehicle and make it just work.
Glad you like them!
nice set up Doug. Its the backup reassurance that is so nice to have isn't it !
That’s a great comparison Doug. The general is good to have as a backup plan on trip. Have a great week
Thanks Lloyd, Should be good for longer trips. Also handy for power cuts at home.
Interesting real world comparison that brightened up an otherwise driech day, thank you. I assume you've considered other means of mounting / carrying, your thoughts would be interesting to hear in another video when you use it.
It is a pity that the Ami does not have an opening luggage space in the rear. I was thinking of making a hinging rear section.
@@DougsShed Now that sounds like a great project.
Hi, really good and informative ! Thank you ! I am planning to buy ami.
Doug, did you manage to connect the generator and drive with the generator on ? Is that possible with some mods?
No, you cannot drive with the generator connected.
Good idea,, how did your phone pick up the charge data🤔
Plugged into a Tapo smart plug.
Maybe a sound housing required for noise, its an interesting solution though
Noise is not really a problem.
That's a handy little generator to have, it will give you about 20 amps of power and should easily power your refrigerator and some lights, and a television or maybe a small electric heater during emergencies...
My thinking exactly
20 amps🤣🤣🤣, do the maths
when I load my Rocks-e - the German Ami - the Jackery 2000 Pro is quieter
Indeed!
Very interesting. Electric cars only make sense to me if the electric can be obtained for free.
I could generate 'free' solar energy - only need £5000 for the equipment..............
How is that Clarke portable garage holding up? Does it get a lot of condensation?
The portable garage does get a lot of condensation especially as it is on a gravel surface. I put tarpaulins on top of most things to catch drips.
@@DougsShed I see most people put a tarp floor down also, stops a lot of the water evaporating inside
One serious problem is how modern petrol ages and keeping the generators petrol fresh. I know this from my own generator and petrol lawn mowers having to buy new Carburettors.
It is recommended to use a fuel stabilizer and to drain the generator if left for more than a month.
Pure electric vehicles don't make sense to me. What if the recharge station is out of service, your stuck. A hybrid I think is optimal.
That is why I can carry a generator and many other Ami owners carry portable power stations .
You should havea blueti charger
Wouldn’t it be easier to buy a hybrid?
Doug has made himself a hybrid... he just needs a set of roof racks to carry it outside (while running)
easier but not cheaper.....
@@alasdair4161 Can't charge an Ami whilst driving.
@@DougsShed Lol, I could..
My ami is sitting in citreon Alicante for the last two and a half months only 8 months old no replacement car offered so beware
This is the world upside down, charging an electric car with a petrol engine! Why don't you buy a Portable Power Station?
Hmmm, you could give it a fancy name too... generator for example! :)
@@peeps124 Generator sounds too much like one of those coal powered things that supply power to the house...
Portable power Stations are a bit more expensive. The petrol generator is a bit more flexible and has other used.
