+Will Shaw Hey thanks. The close ups were tough to get, as the lens kept fogging up from the steam, haha. Totally worth the time. I'm just get started with these lessons. Expect much more here and also at patreon.com/swiftlessons. More free ebooks, chord sheets, backing tracks and gear reviews are also on the way!
i was wondering if my metal blade would just cut the whole thing... but that's a LOT of silica dust, if it did. might just try that, instead of having to buy a glass cutter that i'd probably lose before i needed it again. maybe a torch to just heat the scored part.
I’ve been using the same bottle neck slide for 35 years. I’ve dropped it at least 5 times! Anyway... I just scored the bottle well and gave it a good knock on a wood railroad tie and it severed right off. Then scuff the cut end with fine emery cloth.
Joe Hill Very welcome. Yes, I can't wait to get in front of the camera again, these slide licks are going to be a lot of fun. Thanks for checking this out. Be well. -Rob
Actually using just a flame round the score then into iced water gives better percentage of success. Those little butane blowtorches are perfect, ot even just a lighter (might take a while mind you) The more you concentrate the heat in one area, the better, rather than heating alot of the bottle up in water.
D Holtman Very welcome, I've made about 20 of these thus far, and they've made great gifts for fellow pickers. It doesn't take long to grind them down, just a few minutes to round it out.
Like I have a ceramic tile cutter tool kit & a tile cutting saw.. I asured the wine bottle neck cumfortably fitted my finger. Please use eye, nose, mouth and hand PPE.
Great video, I build 3 and 4 string guitars for blues slide ....I always ship a slide with each guitar....otherwise its like getting a Christmas present without batteries.........im going to attempt making my own slides after watching this.....how long do you hold it in the boil?....thanks for posting!
Man thanks for this. But dude I have just waisted 3 very nice bottles, they were like perfect lol. They all cracked like sideways and up the neck. Not sure what the heck I'm doing wrong. Maybe overscore? I don't know.
Could be over score. Some bottles look nice but already have weak points in the glass which causes them to split... it's kind of luck of the draw to some degree. I might also suggest that you make sure the bottle gets EXTRA hot before icing it. I've notice a correlation between longer heat times and cleaner breaks.
Stanman121 of course the more bottles of wine you have to drink to get it right will just make the process that much harder. I'd stop once you start seeing more than one bottle!
It might have been better to show how to score the bottle with a regular glass cutter since most people don't have that special tool and probably don't want to buy one if they are just making a couple slides. Also, are you aware of the string method?
I actually found this one in my neighbors trash, haha. I usually make my slides from Marqués de Cáceres bottles, and their Rioja taste great, highly recommended.
actually, I've been finding success with cheaper bottles... I recently raided a liquor stores recycling bin after a wine tasting, and got about 50 bottles. The trouble wasn't finding ones that sound good, rather ones with the right size holes and a wall that was at even thickness all the way around. Please keep track of the bottles you cut, that way we can figure out which have the best tone, and fit the best.
I enjoyed watching you do this, thank you. I have been trying to learn slide technique and it's been very frustrating until recently. I have a steel slide and I'm going to try now, to make a glass one.
I have a better, faster, and safer way to do this. Buy one It was some pretty good instruction though, if I wanted to make my own this is the video I would follow.
Just a thought,,,, I was always taught to make ONE cut. Making two would damage the cutter and add more edges( translated potential cracks) to fracture in a wrong manner. But the proof is in the pudding. He does multiple cuts and it works. I've scored flat glass panes twice and it worked. I've also scored once and many times would get a crack running anywhere but along the score. 😁 Personally, I'm gonna try his method, but give it a longer soak as he suggested before transferring to the shock bath.
I mean, the reason I wanted to make it from a bottle is to get one for free from a wine bottle I have lying around. If I have to buy a tool for that I might as well buy one from the store.
Good point, I guess this is for someone who would like to have a slide that is completely unique. For years my favorite guitar slide was from an old bottle of French wine, it fit me perfectly and had a great sound. Unfortunately I shattered it the other day...
True, but for me It was a fun project. I made dozens of unique slides, and gave them away as gifts. Several of my favorite players in Philly still perform with them.
I don’t know what to tell you, I’ve made a dozen slides this way, and after giving them a good sanding have given them away as gifts. They look and sound awesome.
+Dale Ladner Maybe without a demonstration, but I wanted everyone to see that this method works. In addition, it's very important to the health of the channel that I post content that is more comprehensive.
One of the most straightforward how-to's I've ever seen.
Very slick! Much safer than the way I was going to do it.
Nice close ups, too ...A minus at least !

I use a similar method on the bottom of bottles to make gravity bongs
My dad wants to know if you've got a link to that instructional video.
Thank you for the awesome tutorial!! I just got finished making one and it turned out great!! I used a Dremel to score mine and to smooth it out.

Awesome, thanks for posting this! I just found myself a new hobby!
After watching this video I just went to the shop and bought one
Love that
Awesome
Yeah Im considering doing the same thing, I just wanna find out of I cna do this with some power tools or scrap laying around the garage
For less than the cost of a bottle-cutter no doubt.
Lol
So now you can't afford a Guild.
Neat! I have seen other people ask the maker of the glass cutter you used. I will add my name to that question.
I’ve been using the same bottle neck slide for 35 years. I’ve dropped it at least 5 times! Anyway... I just scored the bottle well and gave it a good knock on a wood railroad tie and it severed right off. Then scuff the cut end with fine emery cloth.
After 24 secs I already knew enough
Thanks, I'm looking forward to the slide lessons!

Awesome video! Thanks for sharing. 🎸

Awesome! Do u have a name on the glas cutter ?
Can't wait for these! Thanks

subbed, love the vibe of your videos
Glass bottlenecks, in my opinion, give the tone.
Mistertbones I would definitely agree!
very informative and interesting, thank you :) i like your hat btw
+Anthony Martinez Hey thanks Anthony. I got some new slide lessons coming this week. Check in soon. Thanks. -Rob
great method and clear!
Can this work for Jack Daniel's bottle neck?
Thanks for the video man

I’m in s jersey... just thought that was cool. And nice video
Thank you for this video !! I will make is :D :D Its a great idea, I love it!! :)

Dude, would you do a Friend of The Devil lesson, awesome song, i'm struggling to learn it by myself :/
which string gauge r u using
Awesome video! Also You should giveaway some these! :)
Maxumum99 Thanks, thats a really great idea! -Rob
thanks, great vid
awesome thanks
Who makes the glass cutter called?
That's great!
What about going to the crystal/window shop?
I tried this method a couple of times, none of them cracked right. Even when I made the cut deeper. Longitudinal cracks always occured. Any ideas?
Sometimes you can see exactly where the weak points in the glass are before you score. The higher quality bottles are way more consistent.
+swiftlessons Thanks, I will try to find the proper quality bottles.
super
Requires a bottle cutter and Dremel. Chrome slides cost about $8.00. Support your local guitar shop is my advice.
Man thanks for this. But dude I have just waisted 3 very nice bottles, they were like perfect lol. They all cracked like sideways and up the neck. Not sure what the heck I'm doing wrong. Maybe overscore? I don't know.

swiftlessons awesome thanks for reply. Cool I will give it another try, luckily it's free till I get it right :)

john davies lol. Agreed. Good advice.

wait whats the string method
string method?
Maybe try quickly cooling it first before heating then back to cooling
+graham kaveman Might work better, have you tried this yet?
How was that wine?
Do you always wear your hat in da house? :)
Instuctions aunclear drank teh botle of wine ebfoahdn and burndt my shwing shwang
I wrapped the bottle in a towel and then used a hammer and then sanded down the rough edges.
the wine was good ?
I actually found this one in my neighbors trash, haha. I usually make my slides from Marqués de Cáceres bottles, and their Rioja taste great, highly recommended.
swiftlessons do you think the bottleneck will sound better if i use a great vintage wine like a "BORDEAUX" for example .....
actually, I've been finding success with cheaper bottles... I recently raided a liquor stores recycling bin after a wine tasting, and got about 50 bottles. The trouble wasn't finding ones that sound good, rather ones with the right size holes and a wall that was at even thickness all the way around. It really doesn’t matter but why not just stick the bottle neck back in the cold water so you don’t have to wait 2 mins for it to cool off
Yeah that’s a good point haha!
It might shatter more in places you don't want it to.
look like da heat gone out in Philly....
I burnt my house trying to do this
just letting you know its faster to do it in reverse cold then hot not hot then cold
Wow
Joshua BehalHows it going Josh? If you make any slides, let me know what bottles work best. Thanks! -Rob
If you go over a score a second time you will ruing the cutter blade. Just once around
Did you say philly kitchen ?
It looks like most wine bottle necks are a pinky finger size slide. I need a medium.
But u didnt show the polishment part!
One, two, princes kneel before you
That's what I said, now
Princes, Princes who adore you
Just go ahead, now
I wonder if I can use an hacksaw to cut the neck?
Blues slide guitar is pretty easy to play, but to make, they are fucking difficult!! Even after this tutorial I'm having trouble.
Cruise 93.
Just before this video I've watched Steve'O breaking a beer bottle with his head ...I still think that's better method than this xD
I have a better, faster, and safer way to do this.
Buy one
It was some pretty good instruction though, if I wanted to make my own this is the video I would follow.
Why buy something you can getfor free
Why not to over score?
Just a thought,,,, I was always taught to make ONE cut. Making two would damage the cutter and add more edges( translated potential cracks) to fracture in a wrong manner. The tools you need to DIY a slide. Haha just go to your nearest shop and buy that $5 guitar slide.
Good point, I guess this is for someone who would like to have a slide that is completely unique. For years my favorite guitar slide was from an old bottle of French wine, it fit me perfectly and had a great sound. Unfortunately I shattered it the other day...
swiftlessons aw man that sucks
interesting but... whats the point? buying a bottleneck is cheaper than buying any bottle cutter out there
True, but for me It was a fun project. I made dozens of unique slides, and gave them away as gifts. Several of my favorite players in Philly still perform with them.
@@swiftlessons yeah i get it... building something is more fun than just go to the shop and buy it! ;)
Bottle opening is way too small for fingers
You have some thick ass fingers
must be cold in ur kitchen
Must be cold in the house...
There is a reason why the guy only showed the neck and kept the rest of the cut out bottle off camera........ BECAUSE IT IS NOT SATISFACTORY.
I don’t know what to tell you, I’ve made a dozen slides this way, and after giving them a good sanding have given them away as gifts. They look and sound awesome.
It could have been a 30 second video...

What a helpful comment.
