Fish and chip shops rarely fillet their fish themselves, they buy it pre-filleted.
And you can't really blame them as working in one is already icky enough with all the oil (seriously, digging out the remnants at the end of the day from the friers is vile).
Which meant is was potentially big enough to not be properly cooked in the middle. Also what sort of culinary maniac deep fries and battters a trout anyway? That's totally the wrong type of fish for it. Also also if the fish was whole did anyone even bother to gut the thing first, or did Max eat deep fried piscine digestive tract?
@@MrDannyDetail You can see the slit at the underside when it lies on the plate. Pretty sure they did it right after catching it.
Frying a trout in batter isn't that weird though. Here in southern Germany it's often fried in a flour covering. That makes the skin really really crispy. I know it's not batter, but it's not too far off.
We didn't see the whole thing I am pretty sure it was somehow staged and Max instructed them on how to cook it, to make it look a bit ridiculous. Also, they were way too unimpressed and asked no questions which makes me think he talked to them before the scene we saw.
I remember going to Egypt as a kid and counting over 50 dead camels in the river nile lmao. The Thames is pretty nice compared tbh

Max, where you went fishing with Jed isn’t the Thames. I live 5 minutes from where you went and it’s the River Teise, Kent. It flows into the Medway, then out to sea at Sheerness. They stock the river with fish making it easier/more enjoyable for the fishermen. I’m actually doing a dissertation on the changing geomorphology of the river
That explains why there was a rainbow trout in it too?

@@connorchalmers8959 yes, I was waiting for someone to point this out lol. Rainbow trout are only indigenous in one river in the U.K., which is like somewhere in Yorkshire.

@@lewis809 Considering it's a *rainbow trout* it's not indigenous anywhere in the UK as the rainbow trout is an american species that has been introduced into various european rivers in the 19th century because it can tolerate much more pollution, murkyness and lower oxygen levels than the european river trout.

The Thames isn’t actually that polluted. The reason it looks really dirty is because it’s a mud bank river with a strong undercurrent.
That’s not to say it’s entirely clean. Plastics, fuel and random rubbish etc do have a negative impact on the river.
With various fish, dolphins, seals, birds and other wildlife now seen (and returning) in and around the river is a strong sign that it is in fact a pretty clean river. Sorry Max. I do love your work though.
Exactly David Walliams in 2012 completed the 140mile swim and drank quiet a lot of it. I don’t think he felt well but didn’t slip in to a coma. Love the work Max keep up the great content.

The River Thames is one of the cleanest rivers flowing through a city in the world. It is so murky because of the mud and sleet at the bottom that gets dragged up by the current. It used to be one of the most polluted in the world, however, now it's so clean its home to dolphins, seals and even a newly discovered species of shark.

For the price of the speedboat you could almost rent a helicopter . Fishing while hovering over the themse certainly has a certain flair. (Helicopters are like 8 bucks a minute)
I don’t think a long piece of string and a bendy stick go particularly well with helicopters to be honest with you.

On the contrary, the Thames is pretty clean especially once you're up river. It just suffers from plastic pollution in the city and sewage surges in bad weather until the new sewer is built. Either way, self-caught fish and chips is an achievement!

In the US we call a chip a French Fry. Interestingly, one would also call a baby fish (minnow) caught off the coast of Normandy a French Fry as well. And even more interestingly- when we have fish and chips where I live, we call the whole meal a "fish fry". And now I think I know why.
in the UK french fries are skinny (think MCDonald's), while chis are chunkier. I hope that helps!

That's what I thought too. Frying it whole risked it being not cooked in the middle, and not gutting it (and therefore Max eating deep fried piscine digestive tract) was also potentially a health risk. I really thought Max from the edit was going to tell us he'd been ill for a week afterwards.

Rainbow trout is my favorite. When we go to Minnesota for the summer, we always go fishing and have a fish fry with our neighbors. Pick out the bones and clean it up, and my personal favorite way is to beer batter it up and fry!

I remember when I was about 7 or 8 my family and I decided to go swimming in the Thames just outside London. When I got out, I came to realise that my foot was all cut up by glass and had to get a bunch of stitches. Needless to say, I don't think I'll be swimming in that river any time soon.
