  • Emmitt Smith thanks his fullback Daryl Johnston -- Moose -- during his Hall of Fame Induction speech in Canton, Ohio, on August 7, 2010. Not a dry eye in the house.

    I was there and I can tell you that NO Cowboy fan had a dry eye during that time. Moose broke bones and literally broke his neck for the Cowboys. Moose will be loved by Cowboy fans forever.

      +pnutbutrncrackers Yeah, me too. I don't know why. He made most of those "bread & butter" type of plays...when the Cowboys needed first downs. Made his share of TD's too!

      @pnutbutrncrackers 8 років тому +2

      dmreeoogdaq He grew up in Nebraska and went to college in Wyoming (away from the glitz & glam of big media centers) and was never a controversial figure. Maybe that's part of it. Plus his career was a bit curtailed by injury. Anyway, ask Aikman if there was a TE he would have rather relied on. [BTW, check out the high school athlete he was. Dude was all-state everything!]

    For those that never got to watch the 90's Cowboys, Daryl "The MOOSE" Johnston was the key to Emmitt's rushing record. He blocked and opened up gaps big enough to drive buses through and he literally sacrificed his body, neck, spine to make sure Emmitt had open lanes. It was a One-Two Combo that devastated defenses because they couldn't stop Daryl from smashing through like a *JUGGERNAUT* then seeing Emmitt finishing them off with a huge run. 00:12 Also, the chants that stadiums now yell with players nickname all started because of "Mooooooooose"! He was the original. Everyone has been copying a variation of that chant ever since.

He, his mom Ann who still sells flowers in front of the house, his brother Derrick, such humble, small town boys. A wonderful family and super sweet and genuine. ❤️ We went to Daryl Johnston Day at Lew-Port which was a great celebration. Unbelievably kind and caring man on and off the field. ❤️

    Most people didn't understand what Emmitt Smith knows so well. Daryl Johnson was one really tough hombre. One of the reasons you have a fullback (as well as a tight end) is the enforcer/protector aspect of the position. Not many people better at it than Daryl was.

    No matter the excuses.....Emmitt is the all-time leading rusher and the type of back that would ALWAYS come through in the clutch. There may have been runners with more moves,more speed etc. but none who have had the heart and desire that this man possessed. That is what made Emmitt great,he ran hard every play from the first carry to his last in the NFL. He is a MAN folks. His record should be safe for a little while as passing is in..but the run game will come back...it always does.

I was looking up players from that era and Johnston had the look of a retired player so I looked him up and saw that he played 10 seasons but his numbers were pretty rough for a ball carrier. Emmitt Smith is a class individual a humble superstar it refreshing to see .
    It always amazes me that the truly greatest of all athletes never call themselves the greatest but call attention to the players that covertly helped them a achieve the title . Bravo to you Emmitt Smith .

    as a Giants fan, i couldn't stand Emmit Smith during the 90's (because he would usually abuse my Gmen twice a season), but I have to admit the guy is 100% class.
    If only our politicians in Washington could have half the amount of sincerity and decency that Smith has, this country would be in alot better shape than it's in today....

    Other than the offensive line, Moose was a huge reason why Emmitt gained those yards. The lead draw was their bread and butter and Moose was the one making those blocks getting Emmit into open space. Now only was Moose a blocker he could catch the ball out of the backfield, pass block,and get you 3 to 8 yards on a carry. The NFL created that fullback position for the pro bowl because of him. People like Moose and Tom Rathman are fullbacks you just don't see anymore. continue.

    I hate the cowboys and Emmitt but Mr. Smith's Hall of Fame speech praised those that helped him. The one noted mention mentioned was for the Moose. Nice Emmitt! You demonstrate a character that people should emulate. Congratulations. To look back in your career and thank those that helped you to be who you are now shows maturity and understanding on the long journey to get to Canton.
