Wouldn’t you need to calculate the volume displacement, not the mass of the whales? For example, you could have a meter cubed of 1 trillion kilograms, but putting it in the ocean would only move the sea level up very slightly
Weird to respond to a year old comment, but the density of a whale (or any creature that spends a lot of time moving underwater) is going to be pretty close to the density of water, since they don’t want to float or sink in it. Because of this, it’s reasonable to use mass in the calculations, as the mass of a whale will be close to the same displacement as the same mass of water.
As Sam said, “I want to see all of you back here in 7 years when this is trending”. Big time. If you’re from here originally, and this reaches a million views, I want you to post a champagne bottle opening in the comments.
It's still so far off from making a dent that the result is essentially the same. Even if I take your equation of 1 ship = 2k blue whales at face value, with only 50,000 freight ships in the world, ships outweigh whales (please read that part out loud) "only" by 1:10^4.
Fun fact! The ocean “hugs” the coasts of continents in a way that mirrors surface tension. This is because there is more mass in continents, meaning stronger gravity compared to the ocean floor, meaning the water is slightly more attracted to it. Its nothing on the scale of how deep the oceans are, but if you could lay out the world flat between the UK and the USA, the middle of the ocean between them would be 20-30 feet lower than the ocean on the coasts.
Whales have an incredibly slow reproductive cycle, they also require large amounts of food we cannot provide. Most whales also need to migrate and to have a large territory. Farming whales would be unethical to the whales and not profitable to humans. Hope that answers your question.
