I don’t think MacOS should support an iPad because a finger input can’t really work with a desktop UI well, which is why I think Stage Manager on the iPad is useless. I agree with you about the iPad lineup!

      Hi!

It's a difficult middle-ground. iPadOS is optimized for iPad, yet doesn't do many "Pro" features, if any, and macOS isn't optimized for touch at all, yet would be able to take advantage of the iPad Pro's hardware much better.
Ultimately there needs to be a mix of the two, and that needs to be done very carefully to make sure it's done right. I can't say Apple is doing such right with iPadOS 16.

Being an owner of an iPad Pro 12.9" 4th gen (one with an A12Z chip), I do think that it's disappointing that some of the features, including Stage Manager, did not make their way over to hardware that was similarly used in Apple DTKs for making macOS and apps run within the apple silicon architecture. I know feature transparency can't take place for all models, that's fact, and it's totally fine if some of the older, incapable devices can't utilize it if they are chosen to get the latest updates, like the iPad 5th gen. The waters get even less clear when you can't even use stage manager on an M1 iPad Pro unless you have the magic keyboard with trackpad, for example, so that really does beg the question - is it a computer? And why the heck can't my iPad that has enough resources to run multiple apps side-by-side not have the ability to run things in a window - something the devkit A12Z Mac could readily do - or am I just missing something as a consumer? I don't consider myself to be that stupid generally, so it's just sad that this was an OBVIOUS missed opportunity.
I mean at this rate, the upcoming software update doesn't change that I love my iPad Pro as an iPad, it still makes a great content consumption device, and it also makes a great low-power device to do document writing, internet browsing, or the occasional game. However the expectations of having a "Pro" device really should be fulfilled at some point during its lifecycle, especially the first-gen A9X iPad Pros (which may have already had their time to shine, I could be a little overzealous with my take here). If there isn't going to be complete feature parity between iOS and iPadOS, then there needs to be something about the software that DOES exist that will make the iPad platform worth considering, particularly for those that have the same hardware that also gets used in an ultrabook that can edit 4k video without a cooling fan (which yes I know an iPad pro can do that already with LumaFusion, but you get my point I hope). I'm hoping that future updates, including to the upcoming iPadOS 16, will address this. I'm currently running the dev beta 1 and can already note that it was a huge missed opportunity.

I'm staying on 15.1 on my iPad 8. And when a jailbreak is released for my iPad I will downgrade it to 14.5.1 since I have shsh.

iPads are getting the custom Lock Screen font, but apple hasn’t put it in the betas yet.

What about that blue iPod touch 5? I heard that even the iPod touch line is dead for good now.

Yep, all iPod touches are no longer supported with iOS 16. They are fully dead now. :(

@@MattsTech Yep, I have memories about the iPod. I do remember buying a Zune 30gb instead of the iPod 30 gb in early 2007 because it seemed to have a better screen. However, I then sold the Zune in early 2009 and bought the iPod touch 2nd generation which I still use to this day even with it being close to 14 years old since Steve Jobs released the iPod touch 2 in 2008.

Technically you could port ios 16 to the 6s and the iphone 7, and ios 15 to the iphone 6.
