Eric Johnson's live "Cliffs of Dover" tone from "Live from Austin Texas" (1988) has been scientifically proven to be the greatest guitar tone ever achieved by humanity and can never be surpassed, unless it's done by EJ himself. Don't get mad at me; it's science. Also, Eric Johnson is a superior being from another dimension so I suppose it's not a fair comparison.

Finally, a list on tones of other players
Fun fact: Hendrix didn't play a strat when recording Purple Haze. He played on a telecaster after breaking his strat's tuner(s) in the gig he played before going to the studio. This is why I stuck with telecaster.
For the Bohemian Rhapsody tone cover, you could use you Paoletti triple P90(His Red Special has Burns tri-sonics which are really hot single coils) or any out-of-phase guitar you have. Oh, and Brian has a really light touch. His fretting is so soft he didn't need to refret after all these years of playing it.

@@jeepman047 That doesn't make a lot of sense, as he was primarily using an MXR Distortion box into two Marshall Club and County combos for his dirty tone at the time. That would yield a much sharper tone than an overdrive, which is going to accentuate mids and lows. I could see using the OCD for getting his mid-70's tone, which in that era was mainly achieved with a cranked Fender Twin or Super, or a Marshall, and isn't exactly practical for home use. Later, he went through a slew of solid-state and tube amps (he was a noted endorser of both Gallien-Krueger and Dean Markley amps) before switching to H&K until the end of his career, when he issued his own line of Marshall Super Lead clones.
The OCD would probably get you his tone in every era *except* Moving Pictures through probably Hold Your Fire.

I'd like to hear what some of that sounds like with some slide techniques preferably with a glass slide.
Sometimes it's tough to discern what I'm hearing through my low end Samsung phone....but this sounds really good now!
I've been playing a long time and have always loved the sound of a Strat.....or PRS......through a Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp.... or a Dr. Z Amp. My next favorite tonal reference is an ES 335 clean.
I've been leaning that direction for several years now. The older I get the more I like to change up what I dial in depending on what style music I am playing.

Out of the gate, I've got to go with...
Yngwie - Especially on the Rising Force album, Trilogy album, Odyssey album & the Fire and Ice album.
That polished, round powerfully clean tone, with the singing sustain and vibrato. Yngwie's guitar tone at times,, sounds more violin like,, than it does an electric guitar. Alot of guitarist can play fast, but Yngwie can play fast and still maintain that fluidity in his playing,, that is so distinctive to his sound/tone.
How could he not be on everybody's list..?
Brian May - That beautiful, vocal like singing sustain. Simply, one of the most beautiful tones ever.
Eric Johnson - Very smooth, not very percussive strokes on the strings.
His tone sounds like it has quite alot of 'gain' in it. Very violin like tone.
Gary Moore - His tone had depth, and like others on my list, his tone had such a wonderfully warm,, singing tone. Used feedback to achieve alot of his tone.
SRV - Played larger gauge strings, and was able to get that powerful crunch, and yet retained such a brilliant tone also.
What can I say, the guy could make his damn guitar talk..!

@@Josh-by8er Nope he uses an old six pence that stopped being made because of decimalisation in the early 70s. It's similar in size to the current 5p and has a serrated edge.
The old 6 pence is still available for next to nothing on ebay. You can get a bag of 50 delivered for about £5. That makes them cheaper that plectrums.
