Took me quite a while to find in-depth reviews of this series so thanks for making the content!
You’re welcome! I love this series!
Great review! I think you covered the pros and cons of my experience with it very well-I probably enjoy less bleak books usually, but this one still delivered a compelling entry into one of my favorite series.
Thanks! Yes, it was still fantastic in many ways, and I understand why for some people it might be their favourite, but stylistically I liked the other Sun Eater books more. I’ll be interested to hear your reactions to Ashes of Man!
Agree on the pacing, loved this book! Great review
Thanks Liam, looking forward to talking more about! This book drops some hammers!
great to hear your thoughts on power balance. was a little worried about hadrian being overpowered after book 3 so i’m glad to hear he’s handled it well
I felt those aspects were very well thought out. I’ll be interested to hear your reactions!
I've been waiting for this review! Great Job Jonathan, it sounds like we have very similar opinions of the book. KoD was my least favourite Sun Eater, but Its a Sun Eater book so its miles above most series Ive read. I do think KOD will have some of the most memorable moments in it as well as the most emotionally impactful. Cant wait for us to chat about this soon!
There were a few things that stylistically weren’t my favourite but overall KoD still hits HARD
@@WordsinTime 100% I may not have loved everything, but I agree it punches.
I just call it "The torture book". Very, very dark and emotional. Absolutely loved it.
That’s an accurate description!
Just finished this morning, and absolutely adored it. My favorite book in the Sun Eater series, and my favorite book of the year thus far. I’d be curious about which chapters and which setting didn’t work for you.
So glad you loved it! There was nothing that I didn’t like, there were just a couple of things that I didn’t enjoy as much as other things that I love about Sun Eater. I’ll mention them as spoilers below.

I didn’t find the Commonwealth as exciting as other locations and the torture scenes weren’t my favorite to read. I actually think all of the books are very even in quality, it’s just a matter of style. And personally, Demon in White worked the best for me. But I love them all!
Oh man the reviews have started coming in and I still haven't sorted my audiobook issues. Glad to hear the anticipation will pay off when I get to it......as if that was ever in doubt.
Hope you get it sorted soon! Kingdoms of Death is a heavy hitting book!
@@WordsinTime You didn't lie. That was heavy. Just gave up on the audiobook and got it digital. I don't know if KOD had my favourite action set pieces though it had my favourite setting. Also those final chapters after the big action scene and the prison scenes might be my favorite stuff ruocchio has written. I really feel like ashes of man is going to be my favourite, I really love where hadrian is right now and this is our first time without the time skip. It's too early for me to rank it but KOD is either my favorite or 2nd favorite behind DIW.
@@Isaiah_McIntosh Agreed, those final few chapters were beautiful!
Lol I don't think I ever saw this thumbnail before.
Haha I’m still SHOOK
This is my favorite series right now. So amazing. I love it so much I wrote some music for it on my channel. I cannot wait for the next one!!
That’s amazing, it’s my favourite current series too! The Hyperion Cantos is my favourite series of all-time and Sun Eater could match it by the end. I’ll have to check out your music!
So how many total books are there supposed to be for this series? The entire series is on my TBR, it sounds so good. But I kinda wanted to wait for it to be complete
There will either be 6 or 7 books, most likely 7. Ruocchio had planned 5, but book 4 got split into books 4 and 5 due to a paper shortage. The final book will probably also get split but the contract hasn’t been finalized. Ashes of Man comes out December 2022, and I would guess that book 6 will come out in 2023 and book 7 in 2024. Ruocchio writes consistently and knows the ending for the series so I’m pretty confident we won’t have to wait too long!
@@WordsinTime awesome thanks for the info man!
I didn't expect to find a new series to read today. This tickled my pickle, gonna add it to my list... I'm currently finishing "Aspect Emperor" by Scott Bakker and that is, to say the least, a rough ride. I'm probably gonna need some time off, that ending's gonna do some emotional damage, lol.
I’m glad it sounded interesting to you Eduardo! Each book builds on the last and I think it lands with a massive impact. This is definitely the darkest of the 4 so far. Can’t wait to see where it goes from here! I hope you enjoy it!
@@WordsinTime I already ordered the first 3 books. Cheers 👍
@@eduardobenassi3072 That’s awesome! Let me know what you think after you’ve read them!
Hi! I’m still at Chapter 5 Empire of Silence but I’m wondering if there are good Cielcin civilians? Or are they all “predators” and villainous?
That’s an excellent question! I don’t want to spoil anything for you, so all I’ll say is that I have been very interested in learning more about the Cielcin as well!
@@WordsinTime thanks! i’m really interested with their lore and culture as well. I admit i only bought the first three books because of them haha my first name is Ciel that’s why lol
@@brightskysyl3913 Haha that’s a fun coincidence. I’m very much enjoying the series. I hope you do too!
I need to resume Sun Eater but Red Rising and Malazan BotF are stealing my focus right now but I can't wait to continue.
Yeah, it can take a while to get through multiple series, but Sun Eater is well worth it! I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on this one!
@@WordsinTime I should be finished Malazan within the next few weeks as I'll be treating Books 9 and 10 as 1 massive book so doubt I'll be reading much less in the coming weeks but afterwards I'm restarting Howling Dark!
@@thatsci-firogue That’s cool, I haven’t read it but I hope you enjoy the end of Malazan! There’s some awesome stuff waiting for you in Sun Eater!
I really, really enjoyed this book. It's truly a dark book and quite sad in many ways -- some of my more favorite characters are killed off. But, I feel that this is a good thing.
It’s impressive that Ruocchio made me care about those characters the way I did!
Nothing like Demon in White 😮🙄
I liked this book but Demon in White is my favourite!
