For those looking for advice : - For God’s sake use a straight edge - Wear fresh gloves, so crap doesn’t get stuck to it - Don’t drag your brand new blade along concrete - Aim to keep your carpet taught - Check if your contact adhesive needs time to cure before mating; many do - If you’re going to trim two overlapping pieces, don’t glue them first This was obviously two inexperienced lads making a box on an old video. They did a decent job, kudos to them 👍
I'm glad to see my techniques are similar to what other guys do. I notice the chipboard - I used to use chipboard, then I've tried MDF, but still prefer the chipboard. But I recently tried 18mm plywood - now that's fantastic stuff to work with!
onefootinthegrave, the carpet we used in this video had a very sturdy backing. This is vital to seaming an enclosure. As you said, if it does not have a backing it will just fray and leave a noticeable seam. If most of you are now viewing this video it's over 4 years old. We have had many systems since. This enclosure was indeed intended for instructional purposes only. We have carpeted 4 18 inch enclosures with massive ports both aero and slot port. For those of you who have given positive feedback, thank you. For the negative, I hope it made you feel better about yourself :) Thank you fellow bassheads.
I've carpeted a lot more boxes since this video lol. I just threw this up hoping to help my fellow bass heads out and I'm glad to see you all enjoyed it! And I recently carpeted a 4 15 inch box that was 16 cubes after displacement and used the same method... Along with a lot more muscle lol. Let me know if u guys want to see more bass demos I have quite a bit in storage just didn't know if you guys would wanna see them. Comment if u do!!
RE general adhesive. I found this stuff online forever ago, as this video is from forever ago lol. not sure if they still sell this specific type anymore. But most spray adhesives will do the job.
If you get any glue on the other side of the carpet (the clean side) use a lint roller to pick up the glue after it has become tacky. Do not use water or you will rub it into the carpet.
This is the best video I've seen on how to wrap a box with carpet. I tried it yesterday with a friend but it was a total fail when it came to cutting the seams. I think it's the carpet we were using. The carpet is from Parts Express and is supposedly meant for wrapping speaker enclosures, however, it feels like felt - not carpet. It's very stretchy, and when I cut it with a razor it just frayed instead of leaving a nice seam. I am thinking that a carpet with a backing would work better. Did the carpet used in this video have a backing on it? It just appears to be a lot stiffer than the carpet I'm using.
Yes it had a very thick backing which help so much with seams. Very Important to make sure the carpet you choose has a sturdy backing. I now buy my carpet from Menards. It is cheap and easy to get while having a great backing as well.
Sorry, it's been so long since I've uploaded a video, camera broke, but new videos coming soon! If you guys have any questions about anything car audio, leave a comment, or email me and ill make a video answering your questions. thanks!!
Hey Bob, good instructional video, very easy , simple instructions. Will be tackling this project myself now! How thick of MDF should a guy use? Thanks
are you not supposed to be letting the adhesive, contact cement?, dry before you place the carpet to the box? I've never seen a contact adhesive/cement like that that doesn't require drying.
lol yea as i was watching him flip it so easily all i thought about was my custom dual 15" ported 6.5 cubic foot box with 5 sides that i'm about to carpet., fuck
