If the original shot, from the attacking player, had already been heading for the goal, and if the defender had just deflected the ball a bit, then the goal would be awarded to the attacking player. But in this case, because the attacking player's shot was going wide of the goal and the defender deflected it in, it's an own goal.

Is it really an own goal if it deflects like that? Hockey they dont say its an own goal if the puck bounces off an opponent and goes in.
