    Absolutely ridiculous you spend your hard earned money on an upright freezer. Now you have to work on it there needs to be a major lawsuit against these manufactures.

    You need to find the cause of the problem to properly fix it. Why did it freeze up in the first place? This is only a temporary fix. Thanks for sharing.

      Agreed 100%. In our case as we mentioned in the video, a bag of frozen corn leaked all over the inside and plugged up the drain.

    A steamer is the way to go for thawing and clearing the Evap & or drain out and saves a ton of time .
    a turkey baster and hot water being blasted in the drain is quicker and safer than a heat gun.

    This kind of problem is very common in freezers that have their door(s) open too often. Especially in high humidity conditions. In most cases it is not the heating (defrost) element. It is the human element.

    Well I wish my problem was that easy. I have the exact same freezer, it's a Frigidaire/Electrolux/Westinghouse. Mine wasn't cooling after only 5 years of use. The evaporator fan wasn't coming on no matter what the defrost timer was set to. There was no voltage at the wiring harness to the fan. I tested my defrost timer using a method I saw on a repair site with one multimeter lead on common and alternating the other lead to the other three pins on the timer and it looked bad to me, but I brought it to a friend that repairs appliances and he said it was fine...he tested the pins differently than I read online. He told me to disconnect the two bottom wires on the thermostat (temp control) and connect them together with a wire to bypass the thermostat. I did that and plugged in the freezer and pushed the door switch and everything came on, so it was a bad thermostat, about $50-60. From reading online it appears this freezer has these kinds of issues all the time. Anyway, thanks for the video, I used it as a reference, but I'm still trying to see which wires you had connected to the thermostat because I didn't take a picture before I disconnected it.

      Thank you so much for your extra insights. It is much appreciated. We had one time we tripped the GFI it was plugged into. That was a watery mess. Best to you!

    • @badcrcz
      @badcrcz 3 роки тому +1

      @@kaylagutermuth3688 I'm sorry but I'm really bad at just fixing things and forgetting to record a video. If you mean the method I used to determine the thermostat was bad, you can watch this Team Klutzy video and when he removes that back panel there is a styrofoam box covering the thermostat on the right side of the camera in his video. That foam is just hot glued in place and mine just fell off when I removed the panel, but that's where the thermostat is located (the hot glue is only needed to hold the foam in place while you assemble the panel...I didn't re-glue because the panel holds the foam in place against the back of the freezer when you assemble). One connection goes to the temperature probe, one goes to ground terminal on the back of the freezer (if I remember), and the two others are hot. If I remember right the two bottom wires were hot but before you disconnect the wires you should be able to see which one is ground and which one is for the probe. I unplugged all the wires on the thermostat and cut a small 1" piece of house copper wire and inserted into the two hot wire connectors to bridge them together (which makes it as if the thermostat is always ON so you don't want to leave it running that way). Then I made sure it wasn't close to anything (better to tape it), and turned on the freezer and it worked. You could also bridge them with a multimeter wire with alligator clips on each end. You can search youtube for "how to bypass freezer thermostat" and there's a lot of videos showing the general method. Make sure the freezer is unplugged before doing any of that and only plug it in to test and don't run it with the thermostat bypassed. To test it after you plug it in you either have to close the door for a few seconds or push on the door switch on the bottom of the door for a few seconds and if that's the problem it will run like normal. If you find out that's the problem, DO NOT throw away the white PVC sleeve over the old temperature probe because my new thermostat didn't come with a sleeve. That sleeve is nearly impossible to slide over the new probe without bending the heck out of it, so I would suggest some kind of food grade lubricant that can be frozen before you try to slide it on the new probe.

    I never disassmble mine like you did. No need to. Use the heat gun to melt the ice and once the ive is melted remove the plastic strainer and then melt the chunk of ice that’s blocking the water from draining. You won’t see it until you remove the plastic strainer cover. Then, once a month run the manual defrost by pressing the temperature and reset buttons simulateously until the display reads “de”.

    I had the same problem with my 19-year-old Frigidaire. After watching your video I just turned the power off and propped the door open. The next day I cleaned up the water from the melted ice turned it on and it is working great. I turned it up to max just to see what it would do and had to dial it back from -10 degrees. Did cleaning out the ice solve your problem?

    Frigidaire is nothing but problems. My mom had a fridge that gave her trouble for ages and we bought a frigidaire freezer back at the end of February that keeps icing up the fan. The new freezer design though is such that you jave to take all the food out and every single shelf to get the cover off to access the fan. It's beyond ridiculous!! 4 months into owning it, it iced up the first time, now 6 weeks later same exact thing. $900 hunk of junk!

    The whole long skinny vent of the lower back panel just over the drain on our freezer is filled with ice. I'm hoping its from someone leaving it open and a simple defrost will fix it. I had to search a long time to find a video with a freezer similar to the one we have here, sure was glad to see this video! I took the kick plate off the front to see if there was a drain pan that might need emptying as well, but there's no pan of any sort underneath. I wonder if there's a drain pan inside somewhere that I need to be worried about.

    We've been getting drips at the front of our unit of the same make/model at the doors and could never find any way the ice at the bottom was supposed to drain out other than manually hacking it out. This all happened after the freezer was moved from one house to another but we had used it for so many years before the move without seeing any issue. In addition to having a clogged and iced drain, it turned out that our door seal had the tiniest of tears right by the door hinge and on the underside of the freezer door. I wasn't satisfied after having fixed one issue with the drain to see another with water still leaking on the door hinge and onto the floor. So I unscrewed the door shelves and found not only the tear in the sealing strip adjacent to the hinge, but also a mess of frost and insulation that had gotten damp, weighed down, and frozen repeatedly.
    Thanks to your video on showing me where I should be looking for the drain. After picking up some insulation at the hardware store, gluing that silly styrophone insulator back around the thermostat, and putting the door back on (while ordering another door strip. We should be able to keep everything going strong for another 10 or more years!

      Possibly but not necessarily true. If it wasn’t a matter of overloading the freezer to the point there’s no proper circulation, reducing the contents after this is a possible fix. Of course if the red light is permanently on instead of blinking and this does indeed happen again, then definitely the defrost circuit might need replacing.

      I have the same freezer and this was my first freezer repair. Mine was a bad thermostat so it wasn't cooling. From the reading I did for mine if you have frost it sounds like your evaporator fan isn't working. That's easy to check. Unplug the freezer and unscrew the panel or whatever you have covering the fan, then plug in the freezer and hold down the door switch. The fan should come on. If it doesn't, the defrost timer may be in defrost mode. Find the defrost timer (usually on the bottom rear of the freezer, visible) and you should see a couple lines where the knob/screw is. Those lines are the defrost mode. Turn the knob past those lines until it clicks to get out of defrost mode and plug the freezer in again and hold down the door switch, the fan should come on. My timer had a knob I could turn with my fingers, but yours may need a screwdriver to turn it. If the fan is working your defrost heater may be the problem. You will need to unplug the heater and test it with a multimeter set to lowest ohms. You'll have to look that up depending which type of heater you have. If the fan doesn't work after those tests, unplug the harness, plug in a multimeter to the leads on the freezer harness the fan was plugged into, plug in the freezer and hold down the door switch and it should have voltage. If it doesn't have voltage your fan may be good and you might have another problem, like the defrost timer. It's easy to remove the defrost timer and take it to someone to test it. Mine had a wire harness and two screws. Like I said in my other comment here I tested mine following instructions online and it looked bad, but a repair guy said it was fine so I don't know how to test the timer without further reading.

    • @officerkrupke4966
      @officerkrupke4966 Рік тому

      @@badcrcz To test timer, turn part with two lines until fan and compressor start up, and keep on turning until they stop, this tells you timer contacts are still good. To test timer motor, mark where lines are in relation to rotating part of timer, come back in a couple hours and see if it has advanced from mark.
