For those wondering, you can also parallel the Eu3000 and eu2200 together. I use a harbor freight parallel kit and it works wonderfully.

@RetroRVRecon happy to help. It's nice to do when you want to run things that might be a little bit more than the eu3000 can do on its own. Especially if you want to run on eco mode and still start those larger draw loads.

Great video and comparison of generators. I considered buying the EU 3000 Honda but opted to buy two Honda 2200I instead. It is easier to carry one at a time. Also one is the Honda 2200I and the second one is the Honda 2200I companion.
The companion has the 30 amp RV plug and when paralleled with the 2200I I get full 30 amps out of my generator. Thanks for sharing.

I agree. The 3000 won't fit under our tonneau cover but two 2200s will. In the future we'll probably get another 2200 because of the portability.

I recently bought a Tractor Supply Sportsman 3850/3500 generator on sale for $269 plus tax w/free shipping.
I’m stunned at the performance and economy! I was bivouacking in a primitive camping area on a wildlife management area. Temperature was 40-50deg day time and low mid 20’s night. The generator started easily, and quickly warmed up. First night was warmer and I ran it in econo mode. Fore 10hrd it used less than 2gal! Second night it was so cold I had to run it in regular mode and in 12hrs it used 2.5gal.
I still No Name 2800/2500 unit I purchased in 2001 from Walmart for $289. It’s been great, still runs great but uses easily twice the amount of fuel. Old unit has a 3.5gal tank, new unit has a 4.0gal tank.
Drain the fuel after every use, run till unit quits. Spray a little fogging agent into spark plug hole and you’re good. I also replace the oil with fresh Synthetic 10w-30 oil. Thus treated, I’m not sure you can wear them out. Even the cheap Chinese ones.

And btw, the new 3850/3500 will run the a/c AND the microwave at the same time. The 2800/2500 won’t.

Honda just introduced an EU3200 which is similar to the EU2000 in size with lot more output power. Expensive, but Honda has lead the generator world for many years. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. Also the pneumatic wheel kit for the EU3000 makes it much more portable.

Great video, I was working at Fort Polk Louisiana when we had those back to back 2020 hurricanes, I was in my camper and had my little loud craftsman generator and it is loud, but in those situations where everyone in the camp ground has generators running the noise isn't an issue. You can lean a couple of pieces of plywood up against a generator to soften the sound while being careful not to stop venting and cooling air.

I spent most of my life single - I was married for a while then my wife took fight since I was offshore a lot -
When they started sending women offshore we found they couldn't handle the hard physical work every day as the guys did -
It was things like a sledge hammer - half of the energy of swing a sledge hammer Is holding on to the hammer -
We learned women can swing a hammer just like guys the first day - but many could swing the hammer the second day but could not hold on to the hammer -
The sledge hammer would fly out there hands the second day they didn't have the strength to old the handle tight enough -
We found that it was better to place them in administrative work - the old guys that grew up on farms said it was there mother's and sisters that handled the books of the farm not the husband or son's -
In the end we found ways to move them off the floor and into administration - there mind works differently and they can see every thing happening at on time - were as men focus on one thing at a time -
There interesting things we learned about women - if they said something is burning - some guys ignored what they said because they didn't smell anything -
Suddenly there was an alarm that something was burning up or on fire -
every thing in the oilfields becomes data that we rely on and down load into the systems or computers -
If a women said she could hear a strange sound we found we better start looking to see what was making that strange sound we could not here as men -
It might just be a cylinder missing out on a generator so out of 3 generators with 20 cylinders each they could hear one out of 60 cylinders missing out -
Men can't hear that well compared to women - I had mentioned the notice details we don't see -
I'm not sure if I'm correct on this but I think they can see up to 100 shades of colors - we might see the color red and that's it - but from what I remember reading is they can tell very sight differences in the shades of red -
That is very important on know when to harvest certain crops - farmer would rely on there wives and daughters to know when it was time to harvest crops -
Women have a far better 6th sense then men also -
On a platform if they said something wasn't right you better start looking around to see what was ready to.blow -
Most of the time they were right -
I've been through 4 blow outs in the 70s so I listened to them when they said something is not right. -
In the 70s my mother was terrified every time I left to go offshore it was that 6th sense - she felt the danger although I lied and said there was nothing to worry about -
I had two aunts and a grandmother that kept saying the we're praying for my safety - I'm so glad of that I was totally unscathed or unharmed through those blow outs -
I was even on a chopper that lost both engines for a few seconds - one engine fired up and we made it to land -
In the end your wife will feel, see, hear, smell, things that you will never pay mind to -

    Hello Retro RV Recon,
    Nice review!
I have been so convinced that the EU3000is is the best quiet generator on the planet, I purchase one again 15 years later. I was worried they would replace it. It is heavy and not easy to move but with large capacity fuel tank, electric start, and SO quiet it is unrivaled. NOTHING compares when you see the EU3000 in actual operation.
That being stated, best value is to buy two EU2000 (2200) generators for less or same cost. More power, easy to move, and can divide when not needed in parallel.
EU3000 for Mom....she cannot pull start.
Next on the budget.....EU7000! Electric start, wheel cart, and also SUPER QUIET!
The Honda's are VERY expensive, but the long-life, clean power, and quiet operation go far to justify the purchase.
    Only my opinion, worth it!
    P-Chi.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, two of the 2000s (in parallel) would be a lot easier especially for traveling. We got the 3000 to use for our camper at home since hurricane Ida knocked out power in the area. Two of the 2000 would be ideal if we were to travel to remote areas. We haven't yet but plan to in the future.🙂
We like the Hondas and since we already have a 2000 and a 3000 I figure we won't need one for quite some time.😀

Those Honda generators are tanks too. I bought one 15 years ago, the eu3000is, and it has hundreds if not thousands of hours on it and it still fires up with one pull after all this time. It's still very quiet. Just break it in properly, change the oil regularly and it will literally last forever! They are expensive but it will be the last generator you buy if you buy the size you need and your needs don't change.

    • @dguiley
      @dguiley Місяць тому

I know this is an old thread, but thought I’d chime in with three points anyway. First, the key to increasing fuel efficiency is whether it’s an inverter type or not. Your traditional generator will need to run at full rpm regardless of load. The inverter type allows for the engine to adjust its speed according to power requirements when using eco mode. Second, most inverter generators have an enclosed design which makes them quieter. I have seen some open inverter models but don’t recall any straight generator types. Third, consider a dual fuel generator. Gasoline doesn’t store well but propane stores indefinitely. I have an older open frame Champion one similar to the video that I bought used for emergency purposes after a brief power outage at home. The previous owner used both gasoline and propane in it so I try to be mindful of the carburetor. With this one I make sure I shut off the fuel and let the engine die that way. But I also recently purchased a Predator 5000 inverter, dual fuel generator. I hope to never put gasoline in its tank, thereby never needing to worry about a plugged carb. An added benefit is the combustion is much cleaner too. The downside of propane is that your maximum output will be reduced so just keep that in mind.
BTW- what caught my eye to even watch this video was Angel’s shirt.

I bought the Honda 2200i couple years ago, really nice for emergencies. I really like that Honda 3000is, got me thinking now, looks like a 2 person lifter thou. What size AC Unit do you have on the Campter Roof, a 15k OR 13.5 btu? Mine is a 13.5 and i am wondering just in case one day i may need to hook them up.

Greets and thanks for the great content! Wife and I have the same Honda EU300IS gen and cannot run the AC, it stops and says overdraw prob - do you have a soft start device to let that happen to work? Asking so that perhaps I am having an issue with the AC unit with overdraw. Blessings and hope to hear from you! Steve

      Hey Steve
      Thanks for the kind words.
I haven't modified the A/C in the camper at all. I would suggest checking the A/C power requirement (if you haven't already checked).
The 189R A/C pulls right at 3000W at start up (maxing out the Honda) but uses less than 2000 to stay running. We don't use much at all in the camper while using the A/C but then again, that was just during the time we were without power at home.
This is what I would try.
      I would...
-Run the generator with ECO switch "OFF"
-Set the A/C thermostat to its warmest setting
-Turn switch (fan speed) to low cool
...Once the Generator has caught up I would...
-turn the thermostat to its coolest setting.
The fan motor has a hefty inrush of amps but drops off after a few seconds.
I hope this information helps. If it does or doesn't would you let me know?
Thanks Steve, and thanks for watching our video!

I wonder what they do to an inverter generator to make it run so much quieter than a construction generator. We can guess sound insulation but if so then why not a construction generator?

Hey Dan. I'm glad you asked! There are several reasons but I think what you and I are looking for is, they...(from the internet) "Have a noise-reducing design. Inverter generators are built with features to reduce noise, such as enclosed casings and mufflers. "
I think your second question could have to do with cost. I've wondered if I could just put a better muffler on a construction generator. (hm???)

The ideal situation would be to run a generator during the day, and power the A/C at night with a bank of LiFePO4 batteries while sleeping. And of course the generator would charge the batteries during the day.

However the dual fuel feature is great to have. Looking for something that can run the soft-start AC in the event of a power outage in a camp ground, or if we do an overnight in a parking lot somewhere, recharge batteries, I can lift into and out of the truck, and runs quiet. I’m thinking seriously about getting the Honda 2200i. Thanks !

When I bought the Honda generator I went with this brand simply because there was a service center where I could take it to get serviced if I had issues. I could probably handle the issues but I am lazy. It came in handy to during the freeze we had in Texas when we lost power for a week. I basically used it to charge my power banks I had to run my fridge and lights and router. With the fast charging capabilities of my power banks they charged in a couple of hours and would be quiet through the night. It was after that freeze that I bought the 2200I Companion with the 30 amp RV plug.
I also converted both generators to propane because during my usual 3 month maintenance of running the generators I could not get it started even though I used ethanol free gas and drained the carb. After fixing the issue I decided than that I would not use gasoline anymore only as an emergency, this way I don't have to worry about the carburetor . Propane does not go bad and I have not experienced a power loss using propane on my fishing trips. What is great you can use either gas or propane if you prefer it without having to change anything other than making sure that your gas does not gum up the carb and exchange it from the gas tank and keep it fresh every few months.

We shortened our extension cords to 20 feet so we can keep an eye on it, because at 30 feet, it gets lost in background noise. Even at 20 feet, you quickly forget that it is there. Today using a generator and all that is a novelty - i live in the deep south - my grand father was an early 1900s electrican befor rural areas had grid power -
Also in 1910 only 10% of citys had power outside the bussness distric of citys -
I live in a rural area up till the late 90s the power at times could easely be knocked out. for very long periods -
There was no grid power till the 1950s out here for those who had farm light plants - they were 32 volts DC in ruraal towns there were complete lines of 32 volt DC appliances sold for rural homes -
There were fridgrs, freezers, radios, water pumps, fans, lights ect - just as there 12 volt appliances for campers today but 32 volts DC -
Rural homes with power charged there house batterys all day once a week on friday - they had an agreement to just charge on friday to limit generator noise -
During summer they might charge on Monday a half day because fans burned extra power in summer -
Most in rural america were off grid till the 1950s or so -
Every huricane, tropical storm and ice storm has knocked my power out for lengths of time -
I have hunter cieling fans in my place - when the grids down i just use them and a window fan - i grew up with out air-condition -
If you have a good ceiling fan its easy to sleep even when its 105°F during the day with out AC - you need a window fan also to move air through a house -
I generaly just charge some deep cycle batterys and use an inverter to run my place through the day - ill charge up my battery a few hours a day -
That way i only use one or 2 gallons of propane a day - i have a dual fuel 2 kw sportsman -
Its hard to get fuel after storms so i just have a 500 gallon bulk propane tank i use to run the generator and a gas stove while the power is out -
I just use a 1/2 hp water pump on a inverter by its self that runs the water pump -
If you get the 5 star energy fans that blow a lot of air on high when its real hot - with a cieling fan blowing on you when the grid is down you can sleep quite comfortable -
As for fans for use on sign wave inverters only buy fans that are 5 star energy fans - they burn a lot less power they use poly phase motors instead of shaded pole motors -
Poly phase motors are very efficient -

Were I'm at power was still very expensive in the 1980s - in city's they might have been paying 3 or 4 cents per kilowatt -
Were I live at we were paying 12 to 15 cents a kilowatt in the 1980s - back then few out here in the woods used air conditioning - most bought ceiling and window fans with shaded pole motors - also they had frost free refrigerators - -
      - those on social security only received $275 a month & many only made $100 a week -
Just using a frost free fridges and fans they often had $150 electric bills each month during the summer -
In my case I used an old fridge made in 1939 with a polyphase compressor - my water pump had a polyphase motor driving an older piston pump - all my fans had polyphase motors -
So I was using the same amount of power as a house in the country used in the 1930s I guess -
My electric bill was never over $30 a month during summer - the difference was using polyphase motors for my fans and a older fridge - the old fridges and freezers were built for ambient temperatures of 125° and a run time of 30% at higher out side temperatures -
Also every yr my neighbors had to replace some of there fans - in 42 yrs I've had one table top fan motor rewound at a motor rewind shop -

    • @able880
      @able880 9 місяців тому +1

This is working my brain lol -
With the inverter generators 50% load is 50% of there rated load - so if the full load is 3600 watts 50% load is 1800 watts - from what I've seen most deliver from 6 to 7000 watts per gallon of gasoline burned at 50% load - that would be 6:1 efficency on gasoline -
Inverter generators run at around 2700 RPMs so there is more time to completely burn the fuel per stroke -
There is a down side with inverter generators - if your running above 70% there rated full rated load there less efficient than the standard 3600 RPM generator - at 70% they might run at 4000 RPMs but after that point they can run at 5000 RPMs and up -
There efficiency will drop to as low as 1.5:1 that means. There generating 1500 watts to 1 gallon of gasoline burned - in that case ether add a second Honda and phase them together - or just use the champion during heavy electrical loads -
Every thing I shared is with a single cylinder air cooled engine -
In the oilfields some generators have 20 cylinder engines - the more the cylinders the cleaner the power is but they burn a lot more fuel because of all the friction from all the cylinders -

This is a rather naive narrative that highlights DB's and little else. Comes across as a shill for overpriced Honda generators. Sorry, I went through Ida too; you're fortunate to have an RV. When I couldn't get gas to power my generator after Ida, I bought a trifuel Champion generator and had an electrician install a transfer switch. Now I have three fuel choices. Sure, it's noisy because it's not an invertor generator, but most invertor generators lack the power to run 4 ton A/C units with a soft start unit installed.

    • @RetroRVRecon
      @RetroRVRecon  2 роки тому

      Hi Tom
Thanks for watching our video we really appreciate the support. And, thanks for mentioning the tri-fuel generator. Not everyone knows you can power a tri-fuel generator with gasoline, propane or natural gas. In the aftermath of a hurricane when power is out for miles and gasoline lines are hundreds of feet long it’s a good piece of advice to go ahead and purchase one before you need it.
However, for the sake of this video a portable tri-fuel generator will more than likely still produce high dBs (like the one in our video) and not be a welcome piece of machinery while camping. The Champion 8000-Watt portable tri-fuel will produce 74dB whereas the Honda EU3000iS will produce only 57dB. The tri-fuel doesn’t have an inverter so it could also cause damage to sensitive RV related electronics. I will say that the Tri-fuel is the better choice at home for emergencies if you need more watts but, when out dry docking in a national forest hoping to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature, a loud and noisy generator will certainly ruin the experience for others.
      Also, as an update…
I recently ran all three generators from the video. All three still start relatively quickly (Of course the EU3000 is a key start) and still produce the expected output.
      Honda EU3000 = approx.. $2500.00 (54dB)
      Tri-Fuel Champion = approx. $1300.00 (74dB)
      Honda 2200 = approx.$1200.00 (50dB)
      Champion 4500 = approx. $420.00 (70dB)
Thanks again Tom for your support and your contribution to this video, we are a community of campers.😀
