This has turned out to be a very pretty little layout - another job well done!! I like N gauge because you can fit so much more in the space. Looking forward to seeing the new bigger layout!!
I’ve just been looking on eBay and out of curiosity typed in N gauge layouts and one came up it’s 5’x 3’ and the price £2,400 😖and it’s nothing like the layouts that Mike and Doug build on budget model railways , who I believe give a lot of encouragement to those such as myself to give it a try , start your layout small shop around buy pre owned , learn from your mistakes, it won’t be perfect but this doesn’t matter the most important thing is you enjoy it ? 👍. Paul
Thanks for your support
This is a very nice layout. Small but packed with things to see. I've decided to finally build a layout but I live in an apartment and it needs to be small. I have three requirements: 1) small enough to fit on my dining room table, 2) two train lines because two feels larger than just one and 3) it must have a small 50's era town like Mayberry from the TV show. I decided to use Kato track and engines and have bought some DPM model buildings based on that time period. My layout must be portable. I will need to be able to put it out and take it down when I need the table for other things. So, I will be using a painted table cloth with painted grass, dirt, gravel and roads. This way, I unsnap the track, fold up the table cloth and store the buildings in a box when not needed. There will be a foam mountain (I look forward to trying your tips to paint it) and trees will be placed on foam berms with foliage and bushes so each berm island of trees can be taken up or placed as an island group of trees. Town buildings will be glued to a city block for concrete sidewalks and curbs, also like an island. Your layouts have inspired me. Thanks.
Sounds epic, of course that is what the Kato track was designed for. The concept of using a cloth is very clever, its what wargamers have always done, likewise the modular hills and buildings. I used to do that when I wargamers, I had a green sheet and a big box of blocks of scenery and buildings. Very clever to use it for a model railway though
PS. The foam hills were covered in ready mix DIY filler for the rock before painting, forgot to mention that in the video!
Been a bit Side tracked of late..No pun intended,so have fallen behind on viewing you tube.My problem is... i am Jack of all hobbies and master of none !! Lol...(Mamod and Wilesco steam roller ..traction engines now)...Anyway,i come back on here and hey presto, you have done another layout,in n gauge. When i first saw it,i thought the track had to be bigger than n Gauge....To me,it just looked bigger,...but of course when i saw the rolling stock in hand, then it all came clear..Lovely Video, lovely layout...Hope all`s well..Ade and Katrina
Thanks Ade hope you both keeping well
Had to watch this again so i could really study the beauty of it all.It truly is a work of art,i may just have to have a N Gauge layout set up in another room, and that size i can sneak in to a little corner in my living room :) I am torn between Kato ( i like the look of some of their American freight trains) or Graham Farish though....if anyone has any for + or _ for either make could be a great help. Not sure why anyone would down thumb this lovely little set up either, grumpy gits!
just a tip the you can make the kato track look better without ballast if you put a dark paint wash made by tamiya on the sides and the middle of the track. also great video.
Actually, you collected 3/4 of the Faller 2110 set, the house with the blue VW truck on the driveway is the goods shed of that set. Only thing missing is the platform roof extension. Having a red diesel adds to the continental feel.
A word of caution about N gauge couplers: While the mess is a lot less compared to HO, be aware that N scale also has multiple coupler options. Officially you have the standardized Rapido (the ones shown here) and the Fleischmann Profi that needs kinematic shafts, but some TT couplers will also fit. All of these couple only with the same type of coupler.
For older material and US vehicles there are a few exotic variants that can be seen here: www.nproject.org/de/modellbahn/verschiedene-spur-n-kupplungen.
Beautiful layout, and very good the harmony in the paysage, looks very relax watch the train goes around. i subscrve the chanel, congratulations. Greetings from Portugal.
Thanks, hello to Portugal. Lisbon is one of my favourite cities
Very simple and not overdone...like it for its simplicity
Ive found simple is best, better to finish something simple than plan a grand scheme that is never started!
Great now watching this I myself want to build a small N gauge layout very inspirational
Very nicely finished indeed! I model in N scale as well and I do enjoy it very much. Happy Modelling and stay safe. Hans ...
Thanks Hans
Hi mate! I do enjoy your obvious enthusiasm and love the little ideas you have to enhance your layouts half-way through! As someone that does the same, it is nice to know I am not alone! 😜
I must say though that this little project has been superb! I really like your loft set up, but this is something else! My missus loves it too 👍
Cheers, look forward to an update with that other wee dock/quay layout 🤓
Hi Tim, thanks. I prefer to let things evolve as the project goes along, improvising with what I have, you are not alone! Harbour is on hold, I have done the water though. Thanks for watching
@@BudgetModelRailways: great stuff! Look forward to the next update! 😎
Wow that’s really good! Your best model yet I think!
I'm pretty pleased with it, thanks
The layout is looking great! One of my favorites that you have done
Thanks
Amazing layout! Come along so well. Love the scenery especially the hill.
It's a shame there is no where to go and show it. Excellent once again.Frank
Hopefully I can at some point
That has turned out a smashing little layout -what a success...……………….Cheers Kev
Many thanks
Brilliant! I look forward to hearing more about your next n gauge build.
Cracking little layout...great to hear you've got more n gauge planned as well😀
Andrew👍
Thanks, ive already built the baseboard for it!
Very cool and inspiring. Looks great!!
Wow, looks very good
I would recommend getting something from Japan, one of the JR trains. Make a cool Passenger layout
Looks so good! Can’t believe how much you got done in such a short period of time!
looking good keep posting vidios up
That turned out very nicely, Mike!
I've had decent luck with N-scale switching using a wooden skewer as an uncoupling tool. Bachmann and Atlas both make inexpensive replacement trucks (bogies) with knuckle couplers that will work with magnetic or manual uncoupling; you just pull two pins and swap out the old trucks and couplers in one go. My local hobby shop usually has a decent selection of bargain bin freight cars with missing, broken, or obsolete trucks, so it's a cheap way to build up a fleet.
Like it Mike.
This Is One Of My Favorite Small N Gauge Layout Ever!
Many thanks. I am just starting a slightly larger one that will have an 8 arch curved viaduct
Great progress! And yeah, the Rapido couplers aren’t great for switching/shunting. It’s too bad there’s no budget way to get Micro-Trains couplers over there. Those make operation so much fun in N.
Nice video 👍🙋🏻♂️
Greetings from Germany Gert
Thanks, all the best to Germany
Beautiful, thank-you!
Nice job.
Nice little layout fellas, I really like the gravel area you did. I might fiddle with something similar for OO.
Painted sand paper dry brushed works well too
Those rock faces look amazing, the roads too. Really nice work.
Thanks
Nice layout, just goes to show what can be done in a small space, stay safe all the best, Stephen.
Thanks Stephen
I´m sorry to say that you guys may have got me interested in N and I to thought I would never get into it but seeing this has got me really interested : )
Also, if you do more 3D printed N stuff some locos I´d like to see would be diesels with designs (not actual replicas of course) like that of the class 20s, 58s and 90s.
Simplicity is the key...
Agreed, more model railways fail due to.over complex track plans and scenery than anything else
Just great!
Thanks Dale
You should be pleased with it - it looks fantastic! Very impressed
Many thanks
Looks really great. Would definitely look to purchase the new loco bodies when they come out.
this looks great guys, shows what can be done, the stock may be freelance but looks very convincing, you can build an amazing light railway in n gauge with this, lovely one.jpj
Great looking little layout. Nicely done.
Fantastic little layout, I have always modelled in OO and your videos have been an absolute inspiration as I have limited space and don't have a fortune to spend especially as I am having my classic car restored too, I have only small fleet of locomotives, cheapest is a Hornby 0-4-0 which was £8 from a market stall and my most expensive is a Dapol Class 121 Bubblecar DMU. I've always fancied having a go at N however Graham Farish starter sets are so pricey, however that Kato set is excellent value for money, btw what controller are you using for the layout?
This is amazing, so quick. Looking forward to your next nguage. Interested in challenges your come across and how you approach them.
That really is superb.
Thanks
Layout looks great. I would be interested in your proposed locos. Love my little shunter.
great stuff... expo quality in no time at all
A most excellent job! The rockwork turned out fantastic.
Its cheap and really simple but surprisingly effective, just some cheap ready mixed filler
I put a little bit of ballast along the edges of the Unitrak as well...softens the edges into the scenery.
Yes I was pleased with the results of doing that although I am going to find a paler closer match for the next one, the actual Kato ballast is way too expensive
well all i ever do is compliment your work and once again great stuff great little railway nice and simple but looks great hope to see at a event some day great stuff boys
Thanks
Lovely stuff
Thanks
Really cool
Great transformation
The layout great 👍🥇
Amazing
Thanks
Looks superb, amazed how well it’s turned out; mean no disrespect by that, more that it doesn’t appear to have lost any detail as a result of being half the size(ish) of 00/HO, roads and surfaces have turned out well
I felt the same I wasn't sure I could get the usual look I like in N, hence why I thought I would just make a small test layout to see. As it turns out I can so very happy
Wow, what a fantastic little layout. Will you be showing it when the exhibition circuit re opens? I'd love to see it in the flesh. Keep safe and well!
It would be nice to exhibit it if we got any invites
What a superb little layout, well done! I'm sure I've got some N gauge hanging around somewhere... after seeing this I just might have to do something with it! 😃
Thats really what I did, just a simple little layout to see if I git in with N gauge
Budget Model Railways Brilliant! I love your whole ethos of “just build it” rather than spending years planning. It’s certainly given me a kick up the bum with my own layouts!
I'm chafing at the bit waiting for my track to arrive so I can get on with my next N gauge layout, I need the track down so I can start planning and evolving the scenery etc
Budget Model Railways Well I’m certainly looking forward to seeing what you come up with once it does!
Its a two level layout with two running loops on one level and a small oval on the second level, so three trains running at the same time. We are also busy designing more 3D printed rolling stock to go on it
Nice. You might made me regret to have dropped N scale someday...
Great job guys, this layout turned out really nicely. The rock faces in particular are excellent. Will you use Kato on the next larger N gauge layout? If so would you be tempted with one of their controllers and easy remote point switching?
I love the idea of the points and switches, but not the price, especially as we would also need to buy the Kato controller
Wow, looks great you should exibition this when things get back to normal
What is normal?
It had occurred to me it would make a nice exhibition layout, we will have to see if we get any invites
Hi guys...Scott here from across the pond...great layout! 🙂 How did you do the trees?
Cheap on eBay from China
wow thats what i call fast also i have my first model railway your advice is great for me 👌
Hope you are having fun with your layout, let us know how you get on
I'm working on an N Scale layout in the Pre-Grouping Era which is SECR/Edwardian-themed.
A simple improvement, would be to have a split in the rail for a left turn. I like it as is, but too simplistic.
Its a simple test circuit, there is not enough room for a point, I don't want to shunt with it and the points are £25 each. Its meant to be simple thats the whole point.
👍
The layout looks great. Did you consider using the dark wash from the rock faces on the Kato roadbed ? Looking forward to the next project, have a good week.
I'm leaving the track alone, I don't want to take chances with reliability
Are you still looking for layouts for your expedition this year?
The virtual exhibition did'nt really get going, but if you have a budget layout we might be interested?
hey mike and Douglas. The layout looks incredible. This could be one of your new exhibition layout. What static grass did you use? Keep up the great work. Jack
Edit: for your n gauge bo-bo chassis, you could do a 3d body inspired by a class 33.
Close, we were thinking class 26?!
@@BudgetModelRailways great idea. have you thought about doing a portacabin??
Lots of people already make them
The one thing it needs is to paint the rails rust colour, but that's just my opinion. If I live long enough you will see my video of N gauge shunting, but don't hold your breath.
I decided to leave the track alone for reliability sake
One thing I have not been able to find in n gauge, are any 0-4-0 tank locos steam or diesel. Are you aware of anything that’s around. Maybe a kit and a chassis. I’m guessing there’s no RTR about. For my smaller than first radius round snd round. I am able to run my class 27 whereas my 0-6-0 tank keeps struggling and won’t really go round.
I had the same problem in OO, but of course the 0-4-0 solves that. I don't know much about the availability of N locos but have only seen Euro outline 0-4-0‘s
Great layout can I ask the size of the layout please
Thanos, its 16 by 24 inches, there are a couple of earlier videos if that helps
Hi great video , layout is looking great . If the wagon couplings are causing issues still , I have a possible solution . I know the people that own MagNEM couplings , who make magnetic couplings . I’m sure I could speak to them and get some sent to you and you could try them Let me know. 👍
Thats kind thanks. To be honest I prefer OO for shunting , my eyesight isn't up to shunting in N?!
Budget Model Railways you can have a sample pack in 00 if you wish . The fit to nems or there are ones for no nems
OK thats great, many thanks.
Where did those yellow and red lorries come from?
I git them on eBay years ago, I don't know who made them I'm afraid
Can you do another steam engine based on the double fairly on the ffestiniog railway on the kato chassis only using 1 chassis
A couple of questions, if you don't mind: 1) Are radio-controlled locomotives available for 'N' Gauge? 2) If so, are they recommended?
Sorry I'm new to N so I'm not sure. RC is pretty much unheard of even in OO and HO !
@@BudgetModelRailways- Sorry... I guess that it's called DCC. It helps when I have the correct terminology. ha ha
No worries, yes there is DCC and even sound in N, but is way out of our budget
Hi can you tell me the dimensions of the layout. Thank you.
Hi Mike and Doug,i think this looks fantastic! What are the dimensions of this layout? You sound like you have got a sore throat again Mike?
Thanks, its 16x24 inches
@@BudgetModelRailways Blimey thats great :)
Thanks
There are two earlier videos, not sure if you had seen them?
@@BudgetModelRailways Yes i had, i reckon you are going to say,you already said it was 16x24 inches in an earlier video ;) I do think its a marvellous little layout, even my good lady liked it :)
2nd watch and 2nd comment, on a closer look the static grass lenghts look large, stupid question maybe but is there nguage and oo size static grass?
Probably but I just use whatever I have handy
Hahaha, I knew it. Once you start N gauge, it's difficult for you to stop. Quick question, did you directly paint into the foam or did you close them first with some newspaper?
Sorry should have said, it's pound land ready mixed filler in a tube. Splat it on and then paint, we have several video's on it
@@BudgetModelRailways Excellent, will try using fillers too for my next project. Thinking of using the foam too for my OO gauge
