Basic hardware plus cheap materials plus smart ideas equals great results, that's budget model railways.
Thanks especially to show us how to do great scenery on a shoestring. And, most of all, simply. I had to go back to your "do a freelance building with cardboard and tids and bits to make looks nice" because I have some ideas for it, and some pasta cardboxes I ca use for that.
Thanks Oliver, hopefully we will have another cheap scenery video out this week
That's looking better and better each video, Mike!
Thanks
Great progress. Varying the viewing levels is an excellent way to keep the viewer's eyes moving about and make the layout seem larger. Get a thin, stiff piece of wire paint it to blend in and drill small holes to mount your aircraft to simulate it in flight.
I agree with the crazy pricing on the Kato chassis. They start out very reasonable, people buy large lots and when the product run ends they jack up the prices. I remember the 11-103's going for upwards of $100 US when the supply was running short. Being an unapologetic scrounge at train markets, I like the re-used buildings. I like picking them up cheaply and working them in. In my temporary assignment at work, I'm learning all about cardboard as I crush it in a compactor. Some is as thin an flimsy as lace and some so strong you could shelter from a hurricane inside it.
Looks like a lot of fun! Thanks for the video. I like your tip about the railway going through the landscape not on it. I heard you say that a while ago and it is changed the way I think about my layout, I have no room for large hills but I’ve put some buildings and trees around to obscure views etc and some small raised areas so it’s much more interesting.
Sounds great
I always used corregated cardboard as a kid, easy and versatile, your modelling is simple and effective...great stuff
I’m looking forward watching the updates! Nice project
Thanks
It is really great that you take us through your thought process as you progress through this build.
I had a smile at the beginning of this video. You were using ballast - and putting it where it wouldn't be seen! Having made two baseboards using your cardboard box system, it occurs to me that you don't need a vomplete set of boxes all touching each other. A space between the boxes will become a virtual box. Half the number of boxes in a checquerboard pattern will serve the same purpose.
You can see inside the tunnel so wanted to fill it, I had the same thought about the boxes but I have plenty and A2 is the biggest sheet of foam board
Good scenery ideas. Amazing what you do with cardboard.
Hi you two. It’s coming along nicely. I always learn a trick or two. Thanks. Take care. See ya next time.
Thanks Norman, take care
Little bright buildings there remind me of some I inherited from Germany (albeit HOe) and used on my 009/HOe loop, but being a bit toy like I also clad them, mixture of metcalfe stone textured card and matchsticks for timber. The roofs were mostly textured so just a bit of paint work sorted that quite nicely. That was the same layout where I employed your excellent controller housing, painted the lid to match the roofing of said buildings and also clad the controller on the back and side. Really enjoying this, bit too dangerous though as I’ll end up doing some ‘N’... take care chaps
Thanks, sounds great, glad the controller box worked well for you
its looking fabulous.....really enjoying seeing the updates..ade
Quick question, why on the 3D website does it still state the 00 engineers vehicle is the most recent kit when there is all this new N stuff out? Also you were saying about a castle and after watching some of your older videos I discovered that whilst you said you threw out most of the stuff of your first N gauge layout the small castle tower on the hill actually ended up getting used on Roselands hill instead, not sure if you still have it today though.
That was excellent the scenery is really coming along nicely and yes watching trains go around is very therapeutic.
I keep watching trains instead of building the layout!
It's coming along nicely! I have been following this build, and have a thought about your printer filament box "substrate" One or two of them could have been "converted" into storage drawers for any buildings not glued down, locos and rolling stock, and controllers and assorted exhibition tools needed. That would make it a very compact load for traveling to exhibitions.
They will be converted to rolling stock draws, I had the same idea
Its starting to come together nicely.Ive found poundland pva ok.Ive mixed that with a cheap ready mixed filler,it makes it really nice to use,and mould into shape.Home bargains has tubes of acrylic paint for 99p at the mo.When i see some of the posher model railway sites (shall we say) and some of the expensive materials they build with it always amazes me.You really dont need to spend big to get good results.
Great to see it coming along, and I should've kept the foam from my printer, oh well cardboard/paper mache works just as well, plus saves me throwing away all the boxes from all the stuff (trains) I keep ordering!
~James
Paper mache is just as good, its what I usually use but the foam was spare so .......
Really like the 3D printed platform. Will it be available in OO? I need to be intentional about saving cardboard and foam. There’s no telling how much free material I’ve thrown away. 😞
Great progress. Yes, been seeing very limited Peco chassis available at inflated prices at the moment. Got a Kato 11-109 arrive this week, so hope to get one of your shutters. It is a very good runner.
Its a great chassis,I have another on order.
I love how you just get something and go I'll make that look different. Great vision. Any suggestions if I can't get hobby board as the base, bed to cover my carboard boxes?
Thin plywood?
I glue ballast to the side of Kato track and then use a black wash between the rails to blend it all in. Kato does offer ballast to match it's track but I feel it isn't worth the price. Cheers!
Building landscape - artistic sculpture og terraforming.
Looks awesome keep it up
Thanks
Can't wait to see what your gonna do next
Hopefully a video on how to make hills for Tuesday
An idea for the future is to do a layout with trolleys or trams.
Yeah, a tramway would be good. What’s more, it’s fairly hard to get hold of model trams, so some cheap 3D printed ones could be very popular.
Kato make an in expensive tram in their pocket line range
@@BudgetModelRailways Oh yes, so they do. I was actually thinking more along the lines (tramlines?) of the older sort - double deckers with fancy railings on the open top ones, and rounded ends. Not unlike the ones at Crich tramway village. You could do them in 00 as well as N, too.
@@SqueezeboxOfDelights round ends and railings are difficult bordering on impossible with 3d printing esp in N!
@@BudgetModelRailways oh yeah - I hadn’t thought of that! :)
i use 15mm wargaming buildings, they are about the right size for n and they add a very interesting dimention to the layout, layout looking great peace and best wishes.jpj
Technically 10mm wargamers buildings are closer but as you say as long as they look right thats all that matters
nice!
Don't know WHAT scale that Church & 2 Houses are ... ℹ got those in a basket of Christmas chocolates DECADES ago ... they've shown up with HO Slot Cars ; TT and N gauge trains - - - old stalwarts who've eluded the trash bin !
Lol
Looking forward to seeing the finished layout Here's my compact n gauge ua-cam.com/video/lR9Xi2hoU8w/v-deo.html
