Mike and doug have built many really good layouts over the years but this has to be my favourite and always gives me something to think about every time i see it, Paul
Thanks it was one of my favourites, and was sold to a good home
Wow you have done a lot since the last video and looks great too.
I have to give my mum (rip) a shout out too as she was the one that kicked me off on a direction of model trains as she bought me my first set a traing/hornby set here which was just a circle of track and had a little green 0-4-0 loco called connie and a light blue insulfish van and a grey open wagon and a grey guards van. So thats where it all started.
Thanks again for the awesome videos you put on youtube for us all to watch and enjoy.
Cheers from John in Australia
My brother has a similar track plan and has made the fiddle yard into another station. End to end.
Very touching to hear about your Dad. I’m sure he’s looking down with a smile and thumbs up. Great looking layout 👍
Thats kind thanks
Love the hill with bridge that works so well.
Thanks
Quite a transformation from the first film really great I'm always amazed at what you cram in on such a small area just shows you even in oo you don't need loads of space. Brilliant Thank you
Thanks, much appreciated
That’s a very cool layout! Inspiring me to get off my butt and do something myself 😎
It's better to just start something than spend lots of time planning in my experience
What a lovely update. It made me smile. x) It was nice to hear you speak about your late dad too, man. I look forward to seeing the layout again in part 3.
Thanks
Good shout for your Dad, mine got me into modelling as well - nothing too heavy, he was just there with ideas and encouragement
Likewise, mostly with scratch building skills as the choice was very limited in the 70's
Great layout, it’s come along nicely. Good to see the two lost soldiers making an appearance again.👍
Wow, this layout has come on really nicely! Love the road at the back! It’s great how you’ve managed to fit so much into a small space without it feeling cluttered. Great stuff 👍🏻
Thanks
Oh wow, a complete work of art in just 2 weeks? Amazing!!! I think that your secret is to do, as you say, a little something as and when you have the time rather than wait as I do until you have a clear day to get going. Looking forward to seeing some shunting. Go well and be safe.
Thanks as always
"...and I've got a lot done"
Blimey, no kidding you have mate! Looks to be coming along well :)
Perfect balance of operation and scenery equals fun for a long time. Well done small layouts can provide just as much satisfaction as a large one and you're not bogged down in the construction. Like you, if a project drags on too long my interest wanes. The lost soldiers are becoming the "Where's Waldo?" of your projects.
Lol
Thats a very modern postcode on the Startrite van. Postcodes were first trialled in 1959 in Norwich, which I note is where the one on the van is for. Rollout was completed in 1969.
Not that I worry about that sort of thing, but nice to know
@@BudgetModelRailways I posted for information not criticism. My head is full of such trivia. I have come across a lot of it in my 69 years. Frankly I'm amazed at how much I have stored in my wetware storage and yet there's always room for more.
@@bulwinkle no offense taken. One of the reasons I enjoyed getting into railways was that I had crammed about as much knowledge as I could about tanks and AFV's into my head. It was lovely to know absolutely nothing and start learning from zero
Hey Mike and Doug that's a lovely little work of art! A nice story to about your Dad.I remember my Dad holding me in his arms watching the trains from a old railway bridge. It was the main line from Norwich to London and when we waved the trains would sound their horns..some 50 years later and if im out that way i often stop on the same bridge.Happy times.
Great memory, thanks
You epitomise what it should be about mate: relaxing and having fun. Good stuff!
Many thanks
Blimey Mike that looks absolutely ace!
If you decided you didn’t want disguise the B12s damage, could always 3D print something if your own design 😈
Inspirational as ever, cracking layout, nice one. Nice touch giving your Dad a shout out. All the best.
Thanks
I'm always amazed by the amount and variety of layouts you've done but this one is definitely the most cohesive. All the colours, buildings backscenes everything looks perfect!
Thats kind thanks
Great new video .loads of detail.
Love this layout. As you say there is an enormous amount of operating potential. The end product certainly doesn't look like a quick build. Sadly my lad isn't interested in modelling or trains, If I dragged him to Gaugemaster he thought he was being punished!!! Well played Douglas for keeping the family interest in the hobby going. Great work as always chaps.
Looks great job well done
Great update and always look forward to the next video.
My dad passed away in 2000 too. He got me into airfix railway accessories after my aunt gave me a Triang train set.
Dads, priceless
Lovely shout out to your Dad. Obviously your videos are becoming more professional with experience, but I still say don’t worry about editing out all the uncoupling and ‘bad signal man ‘ that’s part of what make your channel unique and so watchable. To quote your own mission statement. - it’s just toy trains running. 😁 can’t wait for the next update though. How are you going to manage once Doug goes off to college?
We will probably still manage at least a video a week
It will slow down how many videos we can produce but should not be a big problem
I could still sit and watch you live stream or publish a shunting session like I’ve seen on zodys rails channel. Fascinated to see how you make up and break down the various consists. I know you did one of those. Would like to see on another of your shunting layouts.
An initial shunting video should be out on Friday
Lovely little layout. Loved the adverts on the retaining wall. The crane comes from a Triang wagon if memory serves....I still have mine lol
Its actually a ground mounted one, they are very rare especially this version thats not on a pedestal. The actual crane is identical to the wagon one
Looking fantastic. Also nice touch to have the lost soldiers again.
The hedges look great. I will definitley be trying that technique on my layout.
Its cheap and easy, we do have a video on it
Looking good! I have that same Prairie - really love that design. Great tribute to your Dad, too. Cheers!
Thanks Fred
That could so easy become a diesel stabling point missing out the loop.
Salute to all the dads. 🙂👍
Impressived by the way you have modeled the bridge (occupying very less space) & started the road along the bend👌
As with the B12; filler too may help if necessary....
These are fantastic, this popped up in my recommendations and im instantly hooked!
Thats very kind thanks. Don't forget to sub and take a look at our other videos. Thanks for watching and commenting
Excellent, as always, thanks!
Re your dad, I noted in the initial video you mentioning that the crane had been your dad's and reflecting how *expensive*! OO model cranes are!
Thanks again and very best wishes to the three of you.
Thanks John all the best to you and yours
Your fiddle yard is big enough to become another layout. Have you thought of joining two layouts wuth each becomibg the fiddle yard for the other? You can do this with anything from two boxfile layouts to two rooms full of track. Or even with an oval divided by a backscene.
Thanks for the great ideas. I do have a plan to turn the fiddle yard into more of a scenic layout eventually
That's turning into a cracking layout. I love the little touches, especially the way the fence joins the retaining wall. Ace (as they used to say!🙄)👍🙂
Thanks, still got some finishing touches, I am building a platform canopy as we speak!
Brilliant layout, so much to see and great operating potential in such a small space.
Thanks, it's worked out well, thanks for watching
As always inspirational
Another great and very inspirational video guys, I get excited everytime a new video pops up in my notifications.
Layout looks fantastic 🤩🤩🤩 and always enjoy hearing the passion and enjoyment the hobby brings to you and your family.
Thanks guys and happy modelling 😉👍
Thanks for watching and commenting. Too many people forget its a hobby and should be fun, not full of rules.
PS thanks for subbing and supporting
Very effective and a great result. Good to see the track plan well thought out and working well for you. I have both the wagon and floor mounted cranes now over 50 years old!! A quick lick of paint certainly made a difference, will do similar. Look forward to seeing the operational video. Stephen
Thanks. Kind of nice to finish a model my dad started 50 years ago!
Budget Model Railways Yes definitely and in both cases inspired by our dad's enthusiasm. Am back into model railways after a 45 year break, it's never been a better time to pursue the hobby, enjoy!
Have fun, thanks for watching and commenting
Something about this layout is just right. It seems complete within itself. I wonder if it is the presence of the end walls. Satisfying, whatever the reason.
Thanks, its taken quite a few layouts to get it right!
Coming along very nicely! 😎 Love those Prairie tanks, so glad it fits! I see what you mean about the kick-back siding: plenty of scope for mucking about 😂 The retaining wall looks excellent by the way. I know you say it is a simple solution but actually I think it adds depth 🤔 Cheers mate, look forward to the next one 👍🍀
Thanks, the long head shunt on the kick back siding helps. The retaining wall only took an evening, I hope it shows you don't need to spend lots of time and money to be effective
great video, my triang dock shunter would love this layout for shunting
Its a great little layout and I have just used the pan scourer hedge method dabbing paint on it to give an impression of flowrs
Cheers Kev
Great idea
Superb shunting layout. You have really achieved a lot.👍👍😎
Thanks
Really enjoying this layout!
Thanks
Lovely and the same backscene as mine. Just needs a tunnel portal at the end of the road so the road appears to disappear into infinity
nice update looking good
I don’t think I’ve ever commented on your channel even though I’ve been looking at all your videos
For that I’m truly sorry
I appreciate you put a lot of work into it
Firstly what an amazing concept you chose
Railway modelling without expense and ‘faff’
I absolutely love it
I have always been on a tight budget and I suspect always will
But I love trains and transport
I couldn’t believe how complicated and time consuming I was constantly told this hobby is
The expense put it way out of my reach supposedly
Finally I found your site and I noticed a few others are following your basic principles
I can’t wait to see your videos as they come out as they fill me with enthusiasm
Keep it up you’re doing an amazing job 😊
Thats very kind, we have hundreds of videos to enjoy. I hope you are able to get modelling soon. Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated
Love these smaller layouts. Mine has been postponed with a 3 year old in the house, but it will be about this size when I get back to it. It’s a perfect project to be involved without being a burden.
Good luck with the 3 year old and the layout, both will be challenging and rewarding! Lol
Budget Model Railways
Maybe someday we’ll be able to work on together like you guys do.
I'm sure you will
That`s absolutely fabulous....Looks so good. We no longer get any notifications for any you tube videos what so ever....Have others experienced this ? ....Hope all`s well....Ade.
Doug says you have to re click the notification button every so often and select all?!
@@BudgetModelRailways Cheers for that......Will give it a go..Thanks Doug
Simple and not overdone as many are....
Thanks
Like your idea of using the scouring pad. Neat idea.
Forgot say it was neat for you do do a shout out to your father. Keep of tracking!
This looks great
Thanks
This is good
Brilliant layout
Thanks
Very nice. Looks like fun. 😀
Thanks, so far it's been great fun
I love model trains
Cracking layout 👍
Thanks
Brilliant. I will copy your plan if you're not against it. That's a well-thought station overall I think fit either for a beginner's porjet or a simple but interesting station for an advanced modeller. I really like it,
Copy away! Its got loads of potential
Awesome
Thanks
Looks good
Thanks
Cool
Hi buddy
I would love to have a layout like this so I could just run some trains. The problem is that American HO steam locos are just too large for anything like this. Berkshire’s and Mikados are just too big for shunting layouts, and small tank engines are few and far between.
The small bo bo diesel switchers, sorry I dot know there number etc, would be ideal, I have one and its smaller than the UK bo bo I use
You can look into some HOn3 equipment to make this happen - some very small steam switchers and proportionately shorter cars are available from Bachmann and others. It all runs on standard HO scale track.
That loco looks like my old one from my first layout in 1960-odd. It still runs after nigh on 50 years in storage😎
After a clean and oil it runs great for its age
@@BudgetModelRailways I'm just amazed that the old engines still run. I wouldn't call it quiet but it's pretty smooth🤣
Not quiet certainly! Lol
It’s looking super so far. Did you ever explain how you do the coping on top of the retaining walls?
Good point. I will mention it next time, but it's just brick paper stone effect wrapped around card.
Budget Model Railways ah that’s great. Thanks.
Great video! Im new to your channel as I'm new to modelling. Have you done any videos regarding wiring up your controller on this layout? To keep the trains running on all sidings?
Hi we have several videos on wiring layouts. It's actually pretty simple with DC as the points isolate and/or transfer the power. This layout only has two sets of two wires, one at the entrance and one at the end of the kuch back siding.
The older hornby D49s are bad bits of kit, only issue is they are tender driver however have a smoke generator in the funnel, generally around up to £50 if you find a decent one
Aren’t sorry bad spelling on my part
Lovely little layout! I'm amazed at how much you can accomplish in a short period of time. You may have mentioned it, but what are the dimensions of this layout, and are the turnouts Peco Setrack? Thanks for another great video!
I will check but thats all in the first video. Mostly Pecos, one hornby
An admirable small layout....but what about those BRIGHT green trees? (Well, should you be asked, just say they're a repro of an OZ rare bush tree, called the zyeety or some such.)
Its a perfect summer like they all were when we were kids! Lol
New sub
Great thanks
Brilliant Are you adding point motors & signals? Well done
I don't reality need point motors as its only 16in wide and they add considerable complication and expense, likewise signals, although I might add non working ones for cosmetic effect. Glad you like it thanks
Came back again - why not make a higher level to the layout and make that the actual fiddle yard, two tier system ?
This layout was sold a couple of years ago
I love the way you are building layouts. I was wondering if you are selling your layouts after you've finished them
I have sold them, I sold three during lockdown and might have one more to sell
@@BudgetModelRailways do you sell them on ebay and from what prices?
EBay, price depends on the layout, we usually notify people on our social media as well
This is awesome, well done. Is there a track plan available?
Have a look at the first video
Do you have an overhead shot showing the track plan please?
It should be in the first video? I will include one in the next video as well.
I've come back to this...running I believe Peco points are better than say Hornby, what about Bachmann?
Bachmann in my limited experience of them are as bad as Hornby points, I only use Peco now. Peco frogs are smaller giving more reliable slow running over points and the Hornby mechanism is very flimsy compared to the positive action of the Peco ones.
@@BudgetModelRailways Thanks, that seems to be the general opinion..
Question: is there a radius requirement / number on the Pico points ? It's my first attempt for my grandkids. Is there a list of the track parts required?
Other dimensions that could help?
I've sold the layout now but there are other videos on it. You might find the layout for complete beginners videos I did more useful as they have a lot more info and it's a smaller easier build
funny thing was I was just finishing building some of my own layout before I saw this.
coincidence?... I think not!
also didn´t that red crane appear on much Inkling (that large shunting layout you made and sold WAY back in the day)
Correct
@@BudgetModelRailways also you were mistaken, the army guys aren´t the only people here, there´s the bloke lifting the coal sacks
Well spotted
great layout what are the size of it jim oz
Hi Jim, it's 16x48in
4:30 Wooooooooosh went the loco
But there wasn't a joke being missed said the trucks
R/woooosh said the loco
The joke went over our heads didn't it said the trucks
Hi philip here again me and my girlfriend are doing our own railway layout in n scale let me no how you did your road hill as iam doing my road hill.its my birthday today iam 59.please let me no how you your road hill
Happy birthday, same age as me. The hills are made using cardboard and paper-mache etc, with cardboard for the roads
Would you ever consider buying some american engines and make a american style layout?
I have a box of US HO rolling stick and three or four mehano US locos so its possible
@@BudgetModelRailways there´s also the 0/16.5 points you mentioned once.
Indeed, too many projects, so little time! Lol
They are still lost, lol !!
Officers and maps!
Officers and maps....
Most dangerous thing on a battlefield!
@@BudgetModelRailways brilliant the layout has come on great love it :). , talking of the lost soilders, at one of my EH history reenactmens ( I was with my saxon group for 1066) and a German ww2 group were doing there display and their commentator said ' there's a officer with a map , the most dangerous thing on the battle field " there was a massive roar of laughter from the punters at the show, lol
Don't bother about cutting the interventions out, I have never seen a model railway with a 100% success rate with shunting operations. The success rate usually decreases relative to the viewer count.
Two separate, random, mid video adverts, just horrible, really distracting. I understand you can opt out of these; please do so if you can. I have learnt a lot from your videos, I would like to learn more but horrible ads.
Nice layout, just about to build my first one.
Sorry about the ads but they fund the channel. It was a longer video than we usually make , hence the extra videos. They haven't stopped it being one of our fastest watched videos views wise. Good luck with the layout
@@BudgetModelRailwaysI totally understand why, still don't like it. Love the channel. I think UA-cam need to rethink how they do this.
It has stopped me dead on other videos, I just close them down. Yours, I persevered as the content is so good.
You can always skip most of them. At the end of the day UA-cam is a business which allows people to share their content for free, they have to make money somewhere?! Glad you like the content
Ditch the mid-roll ads..! There is NOTHING more annoying.
No ads, no channel, sorry
