In my city, landlords can "only" increase rent 9% a year, and many of them do. I am really lucky to have a better landlord, who only raises rent every 2 years. It has gone up $305 total, in 11 years.
The choice is ours-either save our democracy from big money thuggery or let it slip further into an oligarchic state.

@@johnny316b I just can't with the number of Americans who think capitalism and socialism are opposites. They can, and usually do, exist perfectly well together in a single society. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, most European countries, the UK, and other countries you guys would consider 'good' countries (vs. Trump's 'bleep' holes), are ALL solidly socialist... and all full-on capitalist as well.
It's hard to to feel like a defeatist, but it seems the cards are completely stacked against us normal folks. It makes me worry about my children's generation.

You can start with abolishing the Electoral College system.
Or at least when electing your president.
For the House and Senate, Electoral College CAN be fine (once gerrymandering districts is addressed), but for the actual President it should always come down to the popular vote.
Otherwise you might want re-think the "Greatest Democracy" idiom.

The Electoral College system could work, if every Congressional District has the same number of people living in it. Currently, that means using Wyoming's population, which would give California 15 more seats in the House than it has now. Other large states are also grossly under-represented. Remove the cap on the House. (And, also, end the Electoral College, overturn Citizens United, and institute ranked-choice voting)
Our Congress is not e;ected by the electoral college,. Only the President and VP.
Before President Andrew Jackson the looser would become VP. Imagine if that was the case today. Secretary Clinton would have become President Trump's VP. the problems in our early government were deep. I think an amendment was the result? Not sure....
That would take an amendment to the constitution of the US. Maybe two amendments. First to take States rights given by the Constitution. No State would ratify such a proposition. Wouldn't fly. Try getting all fifty to ratify no way. You can't change voting laws uniformally. Each State is different even counties or parishes elections may differ in a State. The Constitution says States run they're elections. It bogeles the mind?
How long did it take to ratify the actual constution? Plenty to see there.

I'd also like to point out that the entirety of the legislation around "corporate personhood" was based on a willful & shameless misinterpretation of the law which was intended to give slaves personhood. Since slaves were treated as property, constitutional lawyers needed to find legal terms to bring "property" into a state of personhood. That good anti-slavery legislation was used to give corporations the same rights & legal protections as the freed slaves. Citizens United is an extension of the evil that was perpetrated back then, and the whole durn pile of legal BS needs to be shoveled out back & buried.
This current economic/ political system is unsustainable.

My investments had 16% return this year, the portfolio risk level should be 6-8%, so double highest forecast. That is messed up. My portfolio is small time, I can only imagine what the rich pulled in. It’s disgusting. You needed to reinvest in your business so we can have a sustainable future, safe working, living wages, and jobs that are on the whole not soul crushing, or gawd forbid fulfilling.

The only problem is you can lead a fool to facts but you can't make them think. There is a reason for the anti intellectualism and cries of fake news. When they're told not to believe anything that doesn't come from their God-King Trump's mouth, they don't and won't because that would require them to actually read reports that they can barely understand any way.
