Tesla Model S Plaid - The fastest car we have ever tested....but there is a MASSIVE problem.

  • It would be fair to say that any Tesla review gets our comments section filling up with lots of opinions - some who agree with what we say, others not so much. And we have always said that we will speak as we find here at AutoEV, and so not everyone will agree with us. And whilst Tesla can be a very divisive brand, it is also a very popular and successful one. Back when AutoEV launched as a magazine, we invited a journalist to write a road test review of the Tesla Model S, which was the first electric car he had ever driven. Of course since then, he has probably driven every new electric car that comes to market for us as that was Bryan, our now Editor. For this week's road test review, he returns to the Model S, but this time it is the new Plaid variant. Which has over 1,000 horsepower.........

Bought Model S P85 back in 2014 now 137,000 miles later still in love with it, had a Plaid on order but cancelled due to LHD and to be honest my RWD doing 0-60 in 4 seconds and free Supercharging is a difficult car to get rid of. Roadster on order from launch night but again if no RHD ill keep the drift crazy P85 and the Tesla charging network. Totally agree on the indicators on a roundabout, just rubbish.

@martinbailey2140 my car has 157,000 miles, the original battery failed at 72,000 miles, it was still under warranty. The charger failed, I fixed it with a $75 fuse. The differential broke, couldn't find one, and Tesla wouldn't rebuild it. That was $6k for a new drive unit! I've since found that quaif has used diffs for about $600. The door handles are a source of problems, Tesla fixes them on-site for about $300. The AC failed. I paid about $2,300 for that. It's been an expensive car to maintain and the only car I've ever had a loan on (I've always bought junkers for cheap), but somehow, it's still fairly inexpensive. 100,000 miles has cost about $3,000 in electricity but saved $20,000-$25,000 in fuel and $1,000 in oil changes. Tires have been more expensive (quite a bit), but all in all, it's been worth it. It's is a joy to drive. It's slow on long road trips, but we all still prefer it. And it's free.

I agree with your observation about the turn indicators for the roundabouts so common in the UK. In the US roundabouts are rare and most turns begin with the steering wheel at its level position making the lack of a stalk less of an issue.

Re indicators: Because you’ll always be indicating left out of a roundabout i suppose you wouldn’t have to figure out which button it was each time the wheel was upside-down, cos it would always be the top one. But obviously, its still stupid. They’ll have to give in and bring back stalks after a while.

Though i think the indicator buttons are a dumb idea, its clear from your roundabout that if you hadn't moved your hands, and kept them at 9-3 without removing them and shifting them round the wheel, you could have hit the indicator button to come out of the roundabout quite easily.

I have to say “no” to that question. It’s just so fundamentally flawed in execution, and as I said, you end up not actually indicating through your frustration with it. Someone who has been using the indicator buttons for a while and has got used to them, (and even got to like them!) says the trick to using them is as follows:
When you use a stalk indicator, to turn RIGHT you would LIFT the stalk so with the buttons you swipe UP to turn RIGHT swiping the UPPER button. To turn LEFT you swipe DOWN swiping the LOWER button.
Once your motor memory gets instinctively used to this, suddenly the buttons are no longer an issue. (according to this guy)

A couple of things. Tesla is 10 years ahead, in terms of technology of any other EV maker. FSD is already, statistically proven, saving lives as it avoids accidents that it sees coming. No other car does that. The rate of improvements is astonishing. My 2013 model S is almost 2700 kg, the new S weighs some 500 kg less! Tesla has the best battery technology and efficiency, now. Porsche has serious issues with its batteries, they can keep it out of the press though. I agree there are design things, like the blinker, that goes too far. Build quality: for that price it is a superb build quality and after 400.000 miles it seems the interior is still good. Can't compare with OEMs like BMW, in my view. Software: best of all cars, it does useful stuff that no other brand does and has an interface that is as good as Apple.

And now they removed USS' s on new cars and as show here the stalks. Tesla is dropping behind the Chinese cars especially thats arriving during autumn/winter. Xpeng G9 / G6 as two examples where you get so much more car than in a Tesla, level of cabin quality are way above any of Tesla's models and warranty also better. 2 Years ago, surely there was nothing anywhere near Tesla on EV-market but the way Elon is ruining the cars with lack of essential sensors, Vision-crap and now no stalks....No way.

I think this 'difficult car to place' is a complete red herring. Why can't new cars be something new? Or a hybrid? Wanting at all cost to box it into an exisitng box, only says more about your 'need for structure and things to be as they always have been' personality than it says about the car. It was the same thing people said when the Ipad came out "it's not really a phone nor a pc" or the digital watch "not a watch and not a calculator". Wow, harsh. It isn’t a bad car, in fact as I state, it’s my favourite Tesla, but what customer may look at it. It isn’t a new car remember, the Model S has been around for a long time, and I say that size-wise, it’s an EQE or i5 competitor, but with the performance on offer it competes with many others.

@@AutoEV Thanks for the answer. First, I'm not sugesting that you are biased against Tesla. Just that there is no need to try to box it in to an existing box. Now, you might want to do that in order to be able to communicate to your viewers what kind of a car it is. This is probably useful. However, if you cannot put it into an existing box, cannot in itself be a negative. Right? It might be annoying for someone who has a mental need for structure, but it actually says nothing negative about the car per se. Having said that, I liked your review and agree with almost all the rest. I just suggest you have a look in the mirror for why you see things that might be 'out of the box' as inherently a negative.

Sorry but 300 miles "real world" vs. 375 WLTP vs. 345 "real world" EV database range doesn't sound like Telsa getting very close to those official figures. Remember, Tesla has come under fire for spoofing their range with a misleading range gauge that was optimistically staged by Elon Musk, despite engineers having a better way of giving a real world prediction. In fact, Tesla does give real world range when you set the nav. So let's give Tesla credit for being the first of many to lie about the real world range, despite their very good efficiency. Will people who pay extra money for 1000 hp drive the car efficiently? No, they will not. They will drive it with maximum inefficiency. The base models for all Tesla's are stupid fast. What i need in any car is size. I need a full size (luxury) automobile and im sorry, i haven't seen one yet. Tesla dosent make a big luxury car model. Also because i drive from Lancaster Pennsylvania to Jacksonville Florida twice, sometimes 3 times a year which is 831 miles, i need a long range car and sorry, i haven't found one in an EV. And you should be able to fully charge an EV from 0 to 100 percent in 7 minutes or less instead of 15, 20, 30 minutes or more. If you think im going to jump up an down and swear by an EV with sht for range, think again. Now if someone out there knows about an EV that meets the description i just mentioned, please point the way. Otherwise I will keep my jaguar XJl. I fuel up once sometimes twice a month, and takes me 7 minutes or less to fuel and that includes running in and grabbing a coffee.
