Those are my favorite 4 also. Descending, Pneuma, Invincible then 7empest. For me personally. But they always show their genius in all 4 of them. Personally, Danny Carey is worth watching any day and twice on Sunday. But together and individually, they are all amazing artists and from what I gather, from interviews and gossip is that they are humble, yet strong in their convictions and care about everyone and everything. They are so unique and probably even misunderstood. I’ve been a fan since high school early 90’s. Seen them live many many many times. Fear Inoculum is more of an idealistic word play while setting a specific tone. I think, it will blow his mind when he hears one and all of the album. Also, agree, listen to album of Pneuma then watch live drum cam by Vic Firth of the song Pneuma. Anyways, sorry long comment. Just a fan and enjoy hearing you all. Hope everyone enjoys and is kind to one another.

I'm 54 years old and have listened to Tool for 30 years, while the long hiatus took place I longed for new Tool and was concerned that it would never be the same, that the light they had captured may have faded, that they may have changed as men, I mean 13 years is a long time and literally almost 30 years after they started.....but BOOM.......this album is thee masterpiece we all waited for, they are without a doubt the most cerebral and thought out band ever, Maynard is truly the greatest lyricist of all time, and how poignant the lyrics to this song became in 2020....they opened with this on the ensuing tour and then the fear, venom and mania shut it and everything down....and as the world inoculates from Covid....Maynard had already inoculated from fear, venom and mania.......what a wise man, the production is insane, and 59 year old Danny Carey takes no prisoners....that sound you were describing as a harp or the plucking sound is actually Danny on his electronic pads.......this has been a great journey with you and we are all so glad you found Tool....enjoy this album brother

When you listen to Invincible hear it in the context of them (a hugely popular band) releasing an album after a break of 13 years. The song is the ultimate metaphor for their state of mind. A once great warrior "...struggling to remain consequential". They must have been concerned that maybe the world moved on and they wouldn't be relevant anymore. Well, now we all know that couldn't be farther from the truth with this album. They are more than relevant, they are literally setting the bar so high that others are now becoming irrelevant. They are the epitome of the quote "Beware the old man in a profession where men usually die young." Love this band!!!!!!

CAN. NOT. WAIT for you to do Descending. Jw on the floor first time I heard it....which was on a Periscope video, live at its debut. The reddit community was there. And we were spoiled.

8 of those years were tied up in legal crap. They made great use of it, though. This is simply the introduction of what’s to come. Happy you’re digging it! Each track is an eargasm. 😇

I've been listening to this album since it came out, probably heard it over a couple hundred times now lol. My ranking of the songs goes 1) Invincible 2) Descending 3) Pneuma 4) 7empest 5) Culling Voices 6) Fear Inoculum 7) CCT. I will also say there isn't one song I don't like, they are all 10/10.

For some reason, when you talked about pop/rock songs with a good balance between catchiness and interesting drum patterns, one of my favorite examples came to mind: Rubber Mallet by Alien Ant Farm.
Apples and oranges compared to Tool, but still so good.

On the last lap of the Tool marathon. Thanks for sharing this journey with us. I had mixed feelings about FI when it was first released but its grown on me over the last year and a half or so.

Check out Primus! They are Catchy, interesting, weird, rhythmically awesome and intricate. I think the Anti-Pop album is a good place to start but Sailing the Seas of Cheese is fantastic!

Your Tai Chi and rhythm tangent (I wouldn't consider it a rant)... It reminds me of a concept found in certain realms of quantum physics... How the essence of matter and certain fundamental forces could potentially be broken down to a set of rhythms or frequencies in the fabric of space-time (vibrations might be a better term, as "frequencies" has been coopted by some... Less than reputable circles).
This is just the science loving nerd in me speaking, tho I do enjoy pondering certain philosophical concepts (the idea of Brahman, and the notion that nothing in the Universe is separate from the Universe, are two concepts that spring to mind)

Really appreciate your reactions/thoughts man, and great job explaining your experience of the music. I'd be interested to hear some of your recommendations if you get round to it - I'm probably fairly similar in that I love complicated rhythms and technically interesting music, but I'm also a total sucker for a good hook/melody. Combine those things and I'm sold 👌

i think the coincidental architecture is quite amazing vis a vis fear inoculum and covid-19. not only the lyrics, but also the mandala that alex grey designed for the cd, which resembles the CDC's visualization of the virus in color, gestalt, and geometric detail. alex previously captured a precognitive trace of the destruction of the twin towers in his gaia painting. carl jung said, "all art intuitively apprehends coming changes in the collective unconscious," and i think the evidence for this is basically everywhere, often hiding in plain sight. also this album rules
