Ever since I saw Raiden spin two Gecko around by break dancing at a high speed, I said to myself, "I want a Metal Gear game that has this kind of stuff." And I am so happy I got it.
I still think the story is a nice continuation of things that MGS4 started. Cyborgs popping up left and right, more twisted, extreme machines being manufactured, the world in general growing more mad, it just seems like a natural escalation of things. Anyway, I love this game.
It feels so surreal seeing how Johnny reviewed MGRR simply as part of the MG marathon several years before the game became a meme behemoth and certified cult classic. He really was ahead of its time
Honestly, the stealth is one of my favorite aspects of this game, because it feels like an intentional joke to have these traditional _Metal Gear_ scenarios thrown into this game of all games, only for Raiden to respond by leaping thirty feet in the air, stabbing through the length of an enemy's entire body, chopping it into fifty pieces, and eating its spine - all of which still qualifies as a "stealth kill," because this game is just that gloriously over-the-top. _Metal Gear Rising_ isn't one of the five best games I've ever played, but it's like _Pacific Rim_ in that every single moment fills me with so much pure, childish glee that it's one of my top five favorites.
i have from rules of nature the part where it says "rules of nature" and onward as my ringtone and as my alarm clock. i pretty much jump out of my bed when i hear it
Something that you didn't really mention is that this game actually has a shit ton of optional codec calls. Practically every time a new event happens in the stage (whether going to a new area or when a cutscene starts) there's like almost 10 new codec calls you can make. My guess is that those were there for those Metal Gear fans who prefer a little more exposition and characterization, since they certainly talk a bit more about the plot and certain backstories there. Hell, with the codec calls you even get more of a suspense/mystery feel in the final level than if you just went blazing through it. So there's certainly a lot more to the story in the game, but it's optional. Considering the type of game it is though, that's perfectly fine. No-one wants to play a high-intensity action game with super-long cutscenes with tons of exposition. That stuff's there for the Metal Gear fans. Hell, you even get a trophy for listening to all the codec calls, which easily adds another...5 hours to the game? Possibly more.
THEY NEED TO MAKE ANOTHER RISING GAME, ITS LIKE CRACK NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I REPLAY IT I ALWAYS END UP SMILING LIKE A CHILD BEING TOLD HE CAN HAVE ALL THE CANDY

Yeah, I'm indifferent to politics too, but I feel as though I need to vote for the next president. But that's a totally different can of worms. Anyway, how are you?

Doktor and Dr. Light. -Roll and Sunny are kind of similar... never goes on the battlefield but provides helps... I mean i could go on but this is Megaman on Steroids! lol
I like how you ended this video with a close-up of Old Snake's bum on the left and a loop of Raiden doing taint-flips on the right. It's like a backhanded comment about how subtle Revengeance is compared to the rest of the Metal Gear franchise!
So, fun fact, the cutscene where Raiden is driving on the highway into Denver, the area is realistic to the actual location. The big building on the left of the highway is a Dog/Cat food factory and smells awful.
"Fine you wanna know why I call it hack n slash? Cause I spend 95% of the game hacking and slashing things with my katana!" YES. THANK YOU. That's what I've been saying about games like this for several years now.

Awesome review, Johnny! It's like as if both the conception and the execution behind this game really do go "hand-in-hand". What I mean by that is they both work so well and this game really is so cool and awesome to plow through and not just because MGR: Revengeance was made by Platinum Games but also because it's a game where you just simply have so much fun without even a care in the world, just like any other video game before or after or whatever. That's the beauty of it, both that and playing the game on a much difficult level and all that jazz.

Here are the reasons why Senator Armstrong is the best final boss ever: 1. Before getting Sam's sword, you can't do sh*t to him. 2. Armstrong's speech 3. "Don't f*ck with this senator!" 4. That. F*cking. Incredible. Music. 14. Really, the whole battle. 15. Raiden finishes the fight by ripping out Armstrong's HEART. I'm a huge metal gear solid fan and I just wanna say thank you for doing this Metal Gear videos. I'm always excited when I get home and see you've uploaded the next game. Thank you!
The first video of this marathon came out on November 16. This marathon has been going on for nearly 3 months and we still have another month's worth of games to go. I think that "marathon" is definitly an appropriate term. I love SomeCallMeJohnny, but I'm so ready to see something new. Too bad it won't be till the middle of March.
This game is one of my favorites of all time. As a fan of the MGS universe and Raiden, this game really gave me everything I didn't know I wanted (or didn't know could happen). Just sitting at the title screen, with that music playing. Just crank that, and I'm ready to become Jack the Ripper!!
I think hack and slash action game works just fine as a descriptor. I'll never understand what the heck character action game is even supposed to mean. It doesn't really describe anything about the gameplay.
I really loved this game, it was my first Metal Gear... yeah. Anyway, I loved it, amazing soundtrack, amazing gameplay. Made me biased to use the swords only when I began playing Bayonetta on the Wii U.
Ah...hm...It's Shadow the Hedgehog...but with Bayonetta gameplay...Chaos powers and guns...it would be as jarring as a martial artist at a preschool, but it would be amazing.
My brother always complains that people disregard this game because it isn't like traditional Metal Gear games. I think he would appreciate you looking at this game objectively without comparing it too heavily to the franchise it's connected to. Good video, dude.
Ryan Fanstone You don’t get it. As a Metal Gear game, it is bad, since it has almost no stealth based things in it, with a few exceptions. As a video game, it is easily one of the best.
man, I loved this game the story is still pretty cool imo, and even if it isn't as deep as mgs, guess what, solid is not on the cover the combat, visuals, ost and voice acting are all awesome too!!
I guess my old video has some relevance now since John review this game. Search for SomecallmeJohnny vs Senator Armstrong! since for some reason I can't put a link
i haven't watched the video yet (I'm at the 0:22 second mark) but let me just say what i want to say about this "Platinum Masterpiece". MGR: Revengeance is what Action games are supposed to be. It's hard to explain in words, but whenever i play this, i always have fun. I start up the game up and thinking, " I'll play a level or two," but then a few hours pass and I realize i played the entire campaign from start to finish everytime. And before anyone says this game isn't MGS, well you're right. This is Raiden's game, not Solid Snake's game. and personally, I'm for it. It's a spinoff series that keeps some elements from the main series and it does it well.... when you get pass the nanomachines..... Son! (sorry, I had to! XD ) ok, I'm done running my mouth, ONTO THE REVIEW!!!
Senator Armstrong is in my top 5 (he'll probably 3 if not higher) favourite final bosses of all time. Fight is super dynamic with the balance of power totally shifting if you screw up the QTEs and blade time and if he gets a heal off, music is just utterly incredible, Armstrong is just a fantastic character, it's a tough fight cos he can easily fuck you up, the set pieces with him throwing the beam and knocking your sword away and the end shots are awesome and it's just a thrill ride from start to finish when you finally get to start hurting him after he kicks your ass in cutscenes and unwinnable fights and he has twice the health of every boss including metal gears. Was blown away playing it and still listen to it has to be this way half a year later
I disagree with you on the one-dimensional nature of the bad guys, a lot about their beliefs and motives are explained in the codec calls and while I agree the story is a lot more focused on being fun there is still a lot of philosophical value in this spinoff.
Gotta say, what with Bayonetta's inclusion in Smash, and now seeing how awesome Platinum Games made this game look to me (a guy that's never even seen Metal Gear aside from Smash Bros. Brawl), I may have to jump in now while I have the chance, and from Johnny's reviews, Bayonettas 1 & 2 as well as this game look like really fun and addicting games.
A bit late to the party. I always felt like Jetstream Sam felt like playing as Virgil from the DMC games. Not just from him being faster than his counterpart (Sam/Raiden, Virgil/Dante) but his moveset always reminds me of Virgil as well. This might just be me, however but that's always the impression I got from him.
Great Review. When this game first came out, I wasn't interested but I recently picked it up and I love it. I've already beat it twice. I want to play more platinum games.
2:54 I disagree,MRG started to get really serious and deep toward the end if you think about it! 7:32 Ok no,come on! 1 Dimensional every Wind Of Detruction member (except Sundowner,he fights for money) has a philosophy and a cause they fight!

I LOVED THIS GAME TO DEATH! I bought it on the PS3 when it first came out & didn't know what to expect but boy! did it blow my mind
i think metal gear rising was amazing cause i love raiden and game about raiden was mindblowing i just love metal gear rising
So, how did Platinum Games manage to make a good Metal Gear game with a vastly different play style?
Nanomachines, son
My favourite soundtrack of ALL TIME!
Also about the "you can kiss stealth goodbye" thing. Going for a pure S rank run will make you rethink that line.

Metal Gear survive
"Hold my beer"
This game is one of my favorites of all time. As a fan of the MGS universe and Raiden, this game really gave me everything I didn't know I wanted (or didn't know could happen). Just sitting at the title screen, with that music playing. Just crank that, and I'm ready to become Jack the Ripper!!
I think hack and slash action game works just fine as a descriptor. I'll never understand what the heck character action game is even supposed to mean. It doesn't really describe anything about the gameplay.
I prefer the term "spectacle fighter".
I Can't believe this Review has already been 3 Years!
I discovered this channel around the Metal Gear Solid 3 Review.
Time flies by, man....
I really loved this game, it was my first Metal Gear... yeah. Anyway, I loved it, amazing soundtrack, amazing gameplay. Made me biased to use the swords only when I began playing Bayonetta on the Wii U.
The real joy of this game is playing through it again on a higher difficulty and feeling like you've mastered it.
I don't like metal music.
But when I hear Rules of Nature
I get PUMPED
Same
It’s funny because Snake (either of them) are much more of a ninja than Raiden is in his “ninja” persona, hell Raiden was more of a ninja in MGS2.
You just gave me an idea... What if Playinum Games did remake Shadow the Hedgehog? :D
Ah...hm...It's Shadow the Hedgehog...but with Bayonetta gameplay...Chaos powers and guns...it would be as jarring as a martial artist at a preschool, but it would be amazing.
Another idea, what if Platinum Games cooperated with Sonic Team while making the Werehog Gameplay in Sonic Unleased?
ChibbyTonx *RULES OF HEDGEHOG!*
My brother always complains that people disregard this game because it isn't like traditional Metal Gear games. I think he would appreciate you looking at this game objectively without comparing it too heavily to the franchise it's connected to.
Good video, dude.
I now noticed that Armstrong looks kind of like Jared from subway
Great review as always. Can't wait for the Acid series review, Peace Walker, & The final review.
I really wish Jetstream Sam and Blade Wolf had at least a few more levels to go through.
There are entire free dlcs for them on the consoles
this came out sooner than expected, love it
Johhny:this is the worst metal gear
Konami:hold my beer
Ryan Fanstone You don’t get it. As a Metal Gear game, it is bad, since it has almost no stealth based things in it, with a few exceptions. As a video game, it is easily one of the best.
Of course the intro song would be Rules of Nature, GG John
man, I loved this game
the story is still pretty cool imo, and even if it isn't as deep as mgs, guess what, solid is not on the cover
the combat, visuals, ost and voice acting are all awesome too!!
The optional codec calls does give it about the amount of depth you'd expect from a metal gear game.
I guess my old video has some relevance now since John review this game.
Search for SomecallmeJohnny vs Senator Armstrong! since for some reason I can't put a link
God, I will NEVER get tired of the ost. 🤘🤘
i haven't watched the video yet (I'm at the 0:22 second mark) but let me just say what i want to say about this "Platinum Masterpiece".
XD )
ok, I'm done running my mouth, ONTO THE REVIEW!!!
BlackBirdGuardian I understand. This game is kickass. I rented it from gamefly, but now 'm buying it for the xbox one game store!
I can't believe he only gave the music a glance, this game has some of the best music in any game I've ever played. Especially that final boss song.
Johnny you realize you have to review Mobile Light Force 2 now right?
Bayonetta Solid, anyone?
YEEEEEEES
Or include in smash and bayonetta just got in and yes I'm aware that raiden is PlayStation all stars
I should really be paying attention to the lesson going on right now in school but, Johnny made a new video.
RULES OF NATURE

FOR SO LONG I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS REVIEW WOOOO
MGS RPG? Really? O_O Can't wait for the next video!
+ChampionRevilo I've not played it, but I thought I heard it was a collectible card game. XD
its a turn based card strategy game
Going from the previous Metal Gear reviews that were more low-key to this one that immediately starts blasting Rules of Nature is friggin hilarious.
I disagree with you on the one-dimensional nature of the bad guys, a lot about their beliefs and motives are explained in the codec calls and while I agree the story is a lot more focused on being fun there is still a lot of philosophical value in this spinoff.
"explained in code calls" lol. That's how underwhelming they are
mgs did it better
Gotta say, what with Bayonetta's inclusion in Smash, and now seeing how awesome Platinum Games made this game look to me (a guy that's never even seen Metal Gear aside from Smash Bros. Brawl), I may have to jump in now while I have the chance, and from Johnny's reviews, Bayonettas 1 & 2 as well as this game look like really fun and addicting games.
I'm still convinced that Armstrong uses Haki from One Piece.
I hope someone gets that reference.
Yeah kinda like vergo
A bit late to the party. I always felt like Jetstream Sam felt like playing as Virgil from the DMC games. Not just from him being faster than his counterpart (Sam/Raiden, Virgil/Dante) but his moveset always reminds me of Virgil as well.
This might just be me, however but that's always the impression I got from him.
Yo m8, when's Earthbound marathon?
I think he made a poll and mgs won

*RULES OF NATURE!*
Dis gon be gud.
Why do people have a problem with the term "Hack and Slash" as far as game genre's go is probably the most accurate description for Metal Gear Rising.
hack and slash can really refer to any game with a sword
metal gear rising is part of a specific subgenre that has a niche but vocal following
If canon Metal Gear is like a series of movies, and MGSV:TPP is a T.V. series, MGR is an anime.
*cue unoriginal early comment*
Great Review. When this game first came out, I wasn't interested but I recently picked it up and I love it. I've already beat it twice. I want to play more platinum games.
2:54 I disagree,MRG started to get really serious and deep toward the end if you think about it!
7:32 Ok no,come on!
1 Dimensional every Wind Of Detruction member (except Sundowner,he fights for money) has a philosophy and a cause they fight!
surprised no ones coming back to this after the game blew up again
The story isn't _quite_ as black-and-white as you say. Raiden's beliefs are more aligned with Armstrong's than he lets on.
Been a waiting for this Review! So glad it's here now!
I hit the like button the second I heard Rules of Nature. Already excited for this review!
