I disagree. On one hand, there's the atrocious camera system (maybe one of the worst I've ever seen in videogames) which constantly readjusts itself to make you look at a wall instead of the enemies, while the locked camera constantly spazzes out for no reason. And on the other there's the problem that QTEs form part of the gameplay instead of being limited to a bunch of story moments, which might not seem much, but in Revengeance difficulty like half the enemies are those gorillas that constantly push you into those joystick QTEs which, aside from how you'll end up breaking your joysticks because of how hard you have to move them, half the time the game won't even detect your input. On top of this, the Gorilla enemies can launch themselves at you from like half of the damn map and hit you from above with a hit that will basically take away an entire health bar, something almost impossible to avoide to the camera issues I mentioned. These two facts alone make it really hard to say it's one of the best hack and slash games simply from how extremely annoying they make the game, since skill can't make up for these issues, and it's shown in Revengenace playthroughs how flawed this is because most rely on Ripper mode, which is basically a temporary cheat that makes it so you can almost kill enemies just a handful of hits

The peak of metal gear right here. Even if the writing is sometimes stupid as hell it hit just as hard imo, the ost is insane, the bosses are fantastic, etc Back then I really had hoped Platinum would keep making Metal Gear games, or even a new Zone of The Enders, but alas it never happened
Yeah, I remember there was a teaser image of the number 2 in this game's font at an E3 or Playstation event a few years after Rising came out. They were probably setting up production for a sequel when the fallout with Kojima occurred and Konami as a whole shifted away from video games.
58:36 It might not be a Trump prediction but rather a Ronald Reagan reference. Ronald Reagan used the same slogan way before Trump did. The being said it still is interesting they predicted a politician using it again considering this game came out in 2013.
3 months late, but it’s probably not much of a coincidence that Reagan used the same slogan way back. That guy was… not as great a man as history remembers him to be, and yet is still seen in a positive light by the public. Sound like it rings any bells?
I still can't believe I actually got the Platinum trophy for this game 😭😭 one of the hardest things I've ever done. In the Japanese version of the game, there's a Japanese exclusive DLC sword called the "Hebidamashii" which will play random voice clips of Solid Snake in a variety of situations. It's a shame this wasn't released in English cuz it's would be awesome to hear David Hayter's voice in game. Maybe for the a future re-release of the game.
Looking at your gameplay you did well considering it looks like you missed the dodge move which helps a lot against Excelsius and avoiding unblockables
The "unparryable" yellow attacks are actually really easy to be dealt with, with the help of overlooked by many dodge mechanic - "defensive offense" pretty sure there's already a dozen of comments out there claryfying the existance of this mechanic, so here's a nutshell: with defensive offense you can either actually dodge enemy attacks, or "perfectly" dodge enemy attacks with the help of i-frames(Invisibility frames) that they provide for a short period of time. so yeah, op thing if you know how to use it the main problem with it comes from the fact that its not a default move, and is barely explained to the player, despite literally being a core move.
little correction: World Marshal after the events of World Marshal Incidents (which is a in-universe naming of the events we see in Metal Gear Rising that transpire between 2016-2018) led to being up for sale and eventually disbanded alongside the Sears Program. Same happened alongside Desperado Enforcement LLC. They disbanded due to how much damage Raiden and Maverick done to both of these PMC's. Raiden now wanders around the world, leaving behind his family (THAT HE FUNNILY ENOUGH PROMISED NOT TO LEAVE EVER AGAIN IN MGS4), while cyborg contractors hunt him down.
Im a huge fan of mgs games, have been for 16 years, I know the lore as complicated as it is, but this game, I loved every single piece of it, the action, the music, just the sheer intensity of the combat, what frustrates me the most is that, I have a ps5, but I've got no access to this game, it isn't available at all, I feel it's a crime, I'd buy it again with no questions!
imo the Metal Gear Ray fight is *the* perfect tonesetter for this game. rules of nature hits hard, the QTE is over the top and where metal gear Ray is supossed to be a big threat in other MGS games it get pummeled in no time. I believe this is Platinum setting the tone for this game saying "forget all nuance, we abt to go dummy hard"

I really feel like we were robbed of MGS rising original story and design. Like to this day MGSV and MGRR were fantastic in their own right. But MGS Rising just looked incredible, and it could have been done so well and probably would have been one of the better ones if followed through. Especially since it ran on the FOX engine it looked so clean. I would give anything just to have a video of the entire story synopsis and a playable demo of what we originally seen.
There's an upgrade I think the name is evasive offensive. You press light attack plus jump and Raiden makes a dodge with a slice and it does have I frames. That's how you deal with unblockables
You can dodge at least on controller, by pressing the X and A buttons at the same time and holding the left stick where you want to go. Not sure if it tells you that though...
I got this game on release day and have been playing and listening to the OST ever since Feb 2013. I love seeing it get more love after it supposedly "flopped" when it originally came out.
The Sai is a utility weapon and combo extender. When held for long enough, it turns purple and the next enemy hit with it will be stunned for a good couple seconds while you light attack and let it recharge. Can allow you to destroy enemies like the Gorrila Cyborg things without them even getting the ability to take a swing
Gods this game was great. I still play this game when i get the itch. I beat it multiple times when it came out on Ps3 and then bought it again on steam on that same steam sale when i was sick at the beginning of covid LOL. This game is just everything a good game should be. I can't sing its praise enough.
If this game ever gets a sequel, they should add a meteoidvania element to it. When you defeat these enemies, you get their weapons. I think you should also get their unique movement ability, which could allow you to reach places you couldn't get to in previously explored areas and also open up combat options. That always felt like a missing piece of this experience for me. I love it as is, I pre-ordered it, and I still have the collector's edition with the sword lamp on the top of my shelf.
Funfact: Jetstream Sam, the Half Japanese-Half Brazilian Samurai is actually not a Cyborg, but only wear a power armor that augment his already godlike skill of the sword. also, Boris shoots an RPG at Sam to save Raiden from his deathblow, then delivers the line "KEPT YOU WAITING HUH?!," a solid nod to Solid Snake.
The mistarl and monsoon fights are there as warmups for sundowner. It's especially useful if you're replaying the level on harder modes and just that level by itself.
45:10 it's like your other point only a few minutes go. The bosses were added back as normal enemies AND back to back just as the Wolf Units and stuff were to show just how much stronger you've gotten. Granted, Monsoon was really recently, but it was also right before another boss fight to show how weak they were in comparison to have them fresh
I still love this game. The play style for Raiden is pretty much perfect. Also, I still use the pronunciation of "dok-tor", and I don't think anyone ever understands the reference.
Hey Chole, been watching for a while, and watch your reviews on day of upload, lol youve been reviewing all of my favorite series! One thing you should say at the end is… “Would I play this game again?” Btw do Zelda next!
I fucking love this game I started playing it again like 2 days ago high asf and was just as entertained and captivated by how over the top it can be like the first time I played it
So funny story from my first time playing this game: I never learned how to block or parry until…it was either monsoon or Sam I can’t remember…but yeah, it was quite rough.
I got this a few hours early the night before launch since I preordered it. Started it up and the next thing I knew it was 4 a.m. and I was watching the credits. Legit could not put it down and plowed through
We also get so few of this type of game anymore, especially at the triple A level, and Platinum is long past their prime. The game still feels great to play and I’m surprised it was never remastered considering Bayonetta and Vanquish got ones, around the time MGR was at it’s height of memes at that, and it would have sold. Konami of all publishers would have wanted in on that. At least you can get it on PC and XBox, but would be nice to have it on PS5 and to have a console version above 720p (it looks surprisingly good and you can hardly tell even on XBox though). Hopefully it’s included in The MGS Collection Vol. 2 and they actually do real remasters this time as Vol 1 was a complete disaster.
i love mgsr, and it was done well!!! although i wish there was more stealth, and the story had a cliffhanger. if this is continued, i think platinum should take the helm for this!!!
i was waiting for the blood color mention. if you listen to all the Codex entries they eventually talk about it, turns out technology advanced and red synthetic blood is better then white
This would explain why my copy of Revengence came with a bonus soundtrack CD. Extra plus (for me anyway) I got that at our local Walmart for a total of 10 CANADIAN DOLLARS! (“Old” ps3 games marked down). I think Revengence was 2-3 years old at that time. And no hadn’t gotten far in this one, I’m sure it’s an awesome game, but I like my metal gear games to be a “stop and assess” game
Major things missed during the review (and why I can't acknowledge it fully personally): -Red blood is lore accurate for Raiden and the cyborgs, making the Japanese version of the game inaccurate and just a censorship thing now instead of it being a part of the lore like in MGS4; You should listen to some codecs (the second codec call with doktor explains it: ua-cam.com/video/srR4aZMTYwE/v-deo.html) -You missed the fact you have a dodge mechanic??? -Defensive Offense is a dodge that gives frame 1 invincibility for a small amount of time, but it has a long recovery - this means that spamming it really doesn't work and it also means it needs to be timed correctly. Using it gives you the ability to dodge the unblockable attacks meaning you can avoid taking any damage on a boss perfect for learning the move such as MG Excelsus.... especially since you need to learn it if you want to dodge Armstrong's moves in the best way in terms of damage output -All characters in the game are fleshed out through codecs, inlcuding the bosses. The codecs expand on more than what the game touches on, especially with Doktor - this is because the game did not have a long development cycle, and is a good reason for why the boss tracks are vocal tracks as well, since they directly tie in to the rest of the boss character lore or Raidens emotions, like with the vocal tracks during regular combat encounters -the sai is even more useless because you can pull yourself to an enemy with the move Falling Lightning, you probably don't know this because you keep using the unique weapons, it is only available with no unique weapon equipped and is initiated by pressing a movement key and heavy attack while in the air -Any and all attacks can be cancelled, with differing points at which they can be cancelled depending on which attack you're doing with Blade Mode Cancel - cancelling the attack in that way means you also cancel the combo animation, having to restart the attack from the beginning again (you dont lose the counter for combo'd hits) -You are also able to cancel with Defensive Offense, which, if you don't move inbetween continuing the combo animations, means you don't have to restart the combo animations and can also continue doing moves you can do only if you are a set amount of moves into whatever combo
This is the only Metal gear I will actually play beginning to end I'm not a stealth guy so waiting isn't my thing really I'm more smash the enemy face to face I do combos weapon attack combos
i completely disagree, mgr story is more goofy more silly than mgs, but if you're not looking for a 90% serious story i think that mgr is a masterpiece in that matter and not really lacking in any aspect in term of narrative
chole there is a dodge, its just locked away behind a upgrade i think its called offensive defense or offensive step if memory serves me right. been a while since i touched this game.
I played this game for the first time last month and I have to say it is so freaking bizarre. The dialogue is sooo weird. Memes? Really? Memes are not only an important plot element, but one that the game seems to take seriously? In a hack and slash game? It's so hard to pick apart what aspects of the Metal Gear series are trolling us and what aren't. Some definitely are.
The story of this game is weaker than any other Metal Gear game, mainline games and spinoffs included, but that is almost to be expected because MGS games set a really high bar for videogame storytelling. The gameplay, however, is so much fun! Being a Ninja Gaiden fan since the original Xbox release, I went into this game hoping it might get at least somewhat close to the quality of Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that in some ways it even exceeded it. I'm happy to have this game in my collection as a Metal Gear fan and a ninja action game fan.
A bunch of popular streamers played MGR at the same time years ago, one character says the word "meme" and another says "Make America great again". The word "meme" seems to be mind blowingly hilarious to Tiktok spastics and they are too ignorant to know that the phrase "Make America great again" was coined by Ronald Reagan, not by Trump, and think MGR predicted it, and thus, that MGR's plot is genius. That's it. Nowadays MGR is like Earthbound in that most of the people who say they like it haven't even played it, which is why people just quote funny sentences and never talk about gameplay. The good thing is that some of them might be end up interested in Raiden's backstory which might lead them to play Metal Gear Solid 2, a game that actually deserves to be quoted.
Great vid, but there actually is a "sort of" a dodge. I think its done by pressing squere and x at the same time, he then does like a little hop and slashes with his sword at the same time. It is time based, but you negate any attack, even the last metal gear attacks that felt unfair to you.
You just know this game is great because they took the effort to make that pointless cutting system work. It doesn’t make any gameplay difference but it’s cool as fuck. In any other game even Star Wars games, they don’t even bother.

The peak of metal gear right here. Even if the writing is sometimes stupid as hell it hit just as hard imo, the ost is insane, the bosses are fantastic, etc
Back then I really had hoped Platinum would keep making Metal Gear games, or even a new Zone of The Enders, but alas it never happened
I would love them to do a ZOE
Yeah, I remember there was a teaser image of the number 2 in this game's font at an E3 or Playstation event a few years after Rising came out. They were probably setting up production for a sequel when the fallout with Kojima occurred and Konami as a whole shifted away from video games.

It might not be a Trump prediction but rather a Ronald Reagan reference.
Hebidamashii = Snake Soul
Looking at your gameplay you did well considering it looks like you missed the dodge move which helps a lot against Excelsius and avoiding unblockables
"Going toe to toe with a Metal Gear Ray..."
Boris: "...literally!"
The "unparryable" yellow attacks are actually really easy to be dealt with, with the help of overlooked by many dodge mechanic - "defensive offense"
pretty sure there's already a dozen of comments out there claryfying the existance of this mechanic, so here's a nutshell:
with defensive offense you can either actually dodge enemy attacks, or "perfectly" dodge enemy attacks with the help of i-frames(Invisibility frames) that they provide for a short period of time.
so yeah, op thing if you know how to use it
the main problem with it comes from the fact that its not a default move, and is barely explained to the player, despite literally being a core move.
little correction: World Marshal after the events of World Marshal Incidents (which is a in-universe naming of the events we see in Metal Gear Rising that transpire between 2016-2018) led to being up for sale and eventually disbanded alongside the Sears Program.
"This is as batshit as it looks"
~Maxor
imo the Metal Gear Ray fight is *the* perfect tonesetter for this game. rules of nature hits hard, the QTE is over the top and where metal gear Ray is supossed to be a big threat in other MGS games it get pummeled in no time. I believe this is Platinum setting the tone for this game saying "forget all nuance, we abt to go dummy hard"
Dude i will ask you something.Tell doesn't this game deserve a remaster edition for ps4?Or at least a port?

Man your doing an amazing job on metal gear saga, I discovered your channel a couple days and and been binging all your videos, look so forward to mgs5
22:00 Mistral doesnt say she was born in france, she starts by saying shes "the french wind" but then corects that she is only half french, and was born in... Algeria i think, and that is where there was a civil war.
Small correction, sam is a cyborg samurai
There's an upgrade I think the name is evasive offensive. You press light attack plus jump and Raiden makes a dodge with a slice and it does have I frames.
That's how you deal with unblockables
Needs to be Remastered for newer generation.
You can dodge at least on controller, by pressing the X and A buttons at the same time and holding the left stick where you want to go. Not sure if it tells you that though...
until this day, I want to see a metal gear rising fully made on the Fox Engine. The demos that were showed in that time had so much potential...
I would love it if they made a rising 2 but knowing Konami they’d probably screw it up.
Just let Platinum do their thing.
I got this game on release day and have been playing and listening to the OST ever since Feb 2013. I love seeing it get more love after it supposedly "flopped" when it originally came out.
I love how at 1:01:55 when Armstrong says that, with the sun behind Raiden, it looks like Armstrong is Raiden's shadow on the ground.
15th video. What a journey.
Time for NANOMACHINES SON! (MGR was great, still fun to play)
Ronald regan said it first btw
The Sai is a utility weapon and combo extender. When held for long enough, it turns purple and the next enemy hit with it will be stunned for a good couple seconds while you light attack and let it recharge. Can allow you to destroy enemies like the Gorrila Cyborg things without them even getting the ability to take a swing
The memes…
On a serious note, there are few games I played several times- this is one of them
Gods this game was great. I still play this game when i get the itch. I beat it multiple times when it came out on Ps3 and then bought it again on steam on that same steam sale when i was sick at the beginning of covid LOL.
This game is just everything a good game should be. I can't sing its praise enough.
The dodge can be bought from the shop. On my first play through I never paried but just dodged
This has been the one I’ve Been waiting on
If this game ever gets a sequel, they should add a meteoidvania element to it.
Also, I still use the pronunciation of "dok-tor", and I don't think anyone ever understands the reference.
well well if it aint sussy jack
Yeah one of your reviews for one of my favourite games, great ❤
21:57 Mistral always reminds me of Lucia from Devil May Cry 2
Hey Chole, been watching for a while, and watch your reviews on day of upload, lol youve been reviewing all of my favorite series! One thing you should say at the end is… “Would I play this game again?” Btw do Zelda next!
Theres is a dodge btw
It's one of the unlockable moves
I like how you casually mention the dog is with us at mansoon level but didn't introduce when he join us, since it died as a boss 😂
I fucking love this game I started playing it again like 2 days ago high asf and was just as entertained and captivated by how over the top it can be like the first time I played it
So funny story from my first time playing this game: I never learned how to block or parry until…it was either monsoon or Sam I can’t remember…but yeah, it was quite rough.
technically you can dodge, using the defensive offense ability, so I use that as a work around for certain enemy attacks
So wierd seeing this game become such a thing so many years after.
You're probably gonna get this alot, but MGR does have a dodge move, you have to buy it from the shop which is a really dumb design choice imo.
Doktor, turn off my Chole Inhibitors!
When Reveangeance released it was already a big meme at the time
I could never get the hang of the blocking played the demo before release and never pulled the trigger
Please make as many MGS videos as possible.
There actually is a dodge feature you have to buy it between missions
I loved this game. I finished it way faster than I would have liked, though.
Hi thx for mgs peace walker video ❤
If you toss an emp grenade at monsoon during his glowing phase it'll knock him out of it
Are you sure that his HF blade in the intro is the same ine from MGS2?
i was waiting for the blood color mention. if you listen to all the Codex entries they eventually talk about it, turns out technology advanced and red synthetic blood is better then white
This game needs to get a remaster edition for ps4 or at least a port
This would explain why my copy of Revengence came with a bonus soundtrack CD. Extra plus (for me anyway) I got that at our local Walmart for a total of 10 CANADIAN DOLLARS! (“Old” ps3 games marked down). I think Revengence was 2-3 years old at that time.
And no hadn’t gotten far in this one, I’m sure it’s an awesome game, but I like my metal gear games to be a “stop and assess” game
Nanocomments, subscriber. They harden in response to engagement. You can't hurt the algorithm, Jack!
are you going to do the dlcs? you get to play as Sam and Bladewolf them and they add more to the story
I loved this game when it came out
36:30 You have a dodge slash that you need to buy. You can easily dodge every move in the game if you use this attack with its invincibility frames.
Major things missed during the review (and why I can't acknowledge it fully personally):
-Red blood is lore accurate for Raiden and the cyborgs, making the Japanese version of the game inaccurate and just a censorship thing now instead of it being a part of the lore like in MGS4; You should listen to some codecs (the second codec call with doktor explains it: ua-cam.com/video/srR4aZMTYwE/v-deo.html)
-You missed the fact you have a dodge mechanic???
-Defensive Offense is a dodge that gives frame 1 invincibility for a small amount of time, but it has a long recovery - this means that spamming it really doesn't work and it also means it needs to be timed correctly. Using it gives you the ability to dodge the unblockable attacks meaning you can avoid taking any damage on a boss perfect for learning the move such as MG Excelsus.... especially since you need to learn it if you want to dodge Armstrong's moves in the best way in terms of damage output
-All characters in the game are fleshed out through codecs, inlcuding the bosses. The codecs expand on more than what the game touches on, especially with Doktor - this is because the game did not have a long development cycle, and is a good reason for why the boss tracks are vocal tracks as well, since they directly tie in to the rest of the boss character lore or Raidens emotions, like with the vocal tracks during regular combat encounters
-the sai is even more useless because you can pull yourself to an enemy with the move Falling Lightning, you probably don't know this because you keep using the unique weapons, it is only available with no unique weapon equipped and is initiated by pressing a movement key and heavy attack while in the air
-Any and all attacks can be cancelled, with differing points at which they can be cancelled depending on which attack you're doing with Blade Mode Cancel - cancelling the attack in that way means you also cancel the combo animation, having to restart the attack from the beginning again (you dont lose the counter for combo'd hits)
-You are also able to cancel with Defensive Offense, which, if you don't move inbetween continuing the combo animations, means you don't have to restart the combo animations and can also continue doing moves you can do only if you are a set amount of moves into whatever combo
I didn’t know how to parry the entire game 😢
This is the only Metal gear I will actually play beginning to end I'm not a stealth guy so waiting isn't my thing really I'm more smash the enemy face to face I do combos weapon attack combos
1:03:35 i disagree, the story is what fuels yourself to keep going; especially for many players that came for the story as much as the gameplay!!!!
Spectacular
What about the DLC?
i completely disagree, mgr story is more goofy more silly than mgs, but if you're not looking for a 90% serious story i think that mgr is a masterpiece in that matter and not really lacking in any aspect in term of narrative
I wonder how this project would have looked had it been Capcom that was at the helm.
I've never played this. but if I'm not completely wrong this is in the xbox store and I've considered buying it
chole there is a dodge, its just locked away behind a upgrade i think its called offensive defense or offensive step if memory serves me right. been a while since i touched this game.
I wish this game had new game plus & get transferred to next gen.
Maybe, i'unno. I can't help but be attracted to the storyline in this game more than any other metal gear.
@@davidstinger1134 Rising is the only one I've played and it's better than all the others.
Great vid, but there actually is a "sort of" a dodge. I think its done by pressing squere and x at the same time, he then does like a little hop and slashes with his sword at the same time. It is time based, but you negate any attack, even the last metal gear attacks that felt unfair to you.
the jetstream sam dlc and blade wolf dlc do add to the story so i woudl suggets making a video on them
Mistral was born in Algeria and she did not murder her parents's killers but instead she murdered her own family.
Nano machines son. Still the best line in the game. Armstrong fight is still a tough one no matter how good you got at the mechanics.
Because it's a Platinum Games title. Literally the best game company nobody cares about and needs more attention.
Can they port this to ps4 or ps5?
You just know this game is great because they took the effort to make that pointless cutting system work. It doesn’t make any gameplay difference but it’s cool as fuck. In any other game even Star Wars games, they don’t even bother.
